some of the programming that we do
which then results in registration and
retreats dropping off which means we
don’t become viable and they say ‘OK,
we are going to take the resources and
all that.’
“They [Intervarsity] put their energy
and their efforts into the other camps
in Alberta.”
Perry continued, “I mean that’s 41
years of great things that are happening
on that property and many of
you have been there. Your kids have
come through, the schools, and that’s
really important to us. We feel this is
our community. We want to be apart of
this community.”
Perry requested council advocate on
their behalf to keep Circle Square’s
unique value and to keep helping children
develop into the best version of
themselves.
“Do you feel that enrollment would
really drop though because of a power
line?” asked Reeve Stan Schulmeister.
Perry replied, “In regards to the
wind turbines that are off we have distinctly
lost five specific groups that
have made comments to me.
“I asked, ‘Was it the service? Was it
the food? What was it?’ and they would
say ‘Really, to be honest, we are
looking for a landscape where we are
not looking out and seeing blinking red
lights at night’.”
Reeve Schulmeister asked if they
had participated in the Alberta
Electric System Operators (AESO) and
ATCO discussions which they replied,
they had done.
“I think at this point we are far from
knowing if the project will go or where
it will go because they are now
thinking there may be other alternatives.
They want to impact as few
people as possible,” said Schulmeister.
“We just want the opportunity to
speak to you but we did speak to three
different gentlemen and had a really
good conversation with them and stuff
but I think I’m just trying to paint a
picture for you guys,” said Perry.
“It’s not that I’m trying to be a rebel
rouser. I’m just trying to say this is the
impact that it does have,” said Perry.
“And we know that if that goes
ahead, there will be more windmills in
the county and that is a significant
impact,” said Doan.
Visual pollution became the forefront
of discussion.
“When you are out there, can you
see the power plant [towers] from your
site?” asked Coun. Maurice Wiart.
“You mean to the north? Not really.
You can see the smokestack,” said
Doan.
“That wasn’t a determinant to going
there and people weren’t worried about
pollution?” asked Coun. Wiart.
“No, that stack is probably how
many miles away,” said Doan.
“But I mean with prevailing winds
the smoke on a clear winter day you
can see it coming right down that
valley,” described Wiart.
“Yes and no but if you look at it, a lot
of it is a condensation of the hot air
going into the atmosphere,” said Doan.
“Personally, I just think that windmills
10 miles away is probably less
detrimental than –” said Coun. Wiart.
“Yes I would agree but they are not
10 miles away from us. They are only
half a mile away,” said Doan.
“We recognize that there will be
development but I guess we are asking
that we have consideration to choose to
go a little further to the east or south. I
know that affects other people but we
are not here just on behalf of ourselves,”
said Doan.
Council is waiting on more information
and/or a decision from ATCO at
this time.
“I don’t think there is a whole bunch
at this point that we can do. I think
that it’s good that
you have expressed
your opinions to
them. Hopefully,
they take everything
into
consideration,”
said Schulmeister.
“All we are
asking is that if you
have the opportunity
to deal with
this whole issue is
that you would
remember that it does affect not just a
few but it affects quite a few,” said
Doan.
