Trash/Recycle Contractor Change
Green Trails MUD provides trash/recycle service to Green Trails Estates,
GT Section III as well as the other HOAs in our district. As detailed in
below, we changed trash/recycle contractors effective February 1, 2019.
To the residents of the Green Trails MUD: Beginning February 1, 2019,
Texas Pride Disposal will be your new solid waste & recycle collection
provider!
SERVICE & COLLECTION GUIDELINES
Service Days and Hours:
Trash: Wednesday & Saturday
Recycle: Wednesday
Please have waste ready by 7 AM. Service hours may change with new
provider.
Holiday Schedule: Texas Pride Disposal observes four holidays: New
Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. In
the event that your service day falls on a holiday, collection will roll to the
next regularly scheduled collection day.
Household Trash: Waste should be placed in personal trash cans
between 20 and 96 gallons and under 50 pounds or sturdy bags not
exceeding 50 pounds. Waste will be collected near the garage, side gate
or behind a gate that serves as a dedicated waste container storage area.
Yard Waste: Yard waste should be bagged or placed in cans not exceeding
50 pounds. Bagged yard waste should be placed curbside next to cart.
Branches should be placed curbside in bundles measuring no more than
4’ x 4’ x 4’ and under 50 pounds. Limit 8 bundles per service day.
Heavy Trash & Bulk Waste: Texas Pride Disposal will collect two heavy
trash/bulk items per service day. Items include furniture, appliances,
carpeting (tied and bundled), fencing (nails removed, tied and bundled
under 4’ in length) and other items not disposed of regularly. Items
should be curbside.
Items Excluded from Regular Collection: The following items cannot
be collected: dirt, rocks, brick, concrete, liquid paints, fuels, oils, tires,
pesticides, fertilizer and batteries. Please contact us to discuss solutions
for proper disposal of these items.
Recycle Service: A new 18-gallon bin will be provided to each household
before February 1 st . Existing recycle carts that are clearly labeled RECYCLE
may be used. Recycle will be collected curbside.

(GT ESTATES) DEBRIS IN SEWER DRAINS
Please refrain from depositing any debris (lawn clippings, leaves, pet waste,
motor oil, etc.) into the streets or storm drains. Disposing of debris in the street
or other portions of the storm water drainage system can create problems.
Flooding takes place when the system becomes blocked with debris. This
can create a flooding potential that could result in property damage. The
water quality is impacted if you’ve used chemicals on your lawn or garden.
In addition, pet waste left on yards can contribute to contaminated run
off. Grass clippings and leaves left in the storm water system contribute to
system wear and can destroy the underground system. Please make sure you
dispose of your lawn clippings, leaves and other debris in a proper manner.
(GT ESTATES) SECURITY
Neighborhood security is provided by the Harris County Constables
Precinct 5 Office, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. We also have an
additional contract with them (Contract 50 - in conjunction with the
other sections of Green Trails and Windsor Park Lakes).

Updated 10/14 - Residents of Constable Precinct 5 contract
subdivisions, which include Estates of Green Trails, can have their
homes checked by a drive-by patrol officer while they are away on
vacation. Please contact the Constable’s office at 281-463-6666 or
complete a Vacation Watch Form, which can be found online at www.
harriscountytx.gov/pct5 or www.constablepct5.com - You will need
to complete the form and submit it to the Constable’s office one week
before you leave! If your home is monitored by a private security
alarm system, please be sure to tell them you are in Green Trails
Contract 50 with the Harris County Constable in Precinct 5. You must
also have an Alarm Permit with the Harris County Sheriff’s office. The

(GT ESTATES) RECREATION CENTER
Estates of Green Trails own the Recreation Center at Shillington Drive and
Fry Road. It consists of an Olympic-size swimming pool, totally refinished
in the spring of 2015 and two tennis courts, recently refinished in 2015.
Use of these facilities is allowed to all Estates of Green Trails residents in
good standing who have paid their annual maintenance fee. Green Trails
Section III residents in good standing with their homeowners association
can also use these facilities.
Only residents who have been issued Pool/Tennis Court Access Cards
from Sterling ASI are admitted into the pool and allowed to use the
tennis courts.
(GT ESTATES) TENNIS COURTS
Any Estates of Green Trails or Green Trails Section III resident with a Pool/
Tennis Court Access Card can use the tennis courts. Tennis Court Hours:
7:30 AM until 10:00 PM. Rollerblades, skateboards or any other wheeled
vehicles are not allowed on the courts any time.
(GT ESTATES) HIKE & BIKE TRAIL
The 10.75 mile, asphalt trail is available from dawn to dusk for
walkers and bicyclists, foot-and non-motorized-wheel-traffic. The trail
runs from Highland Knolls at Fry Road through George Bush Park to
Highway 6 then connects to Terry Hershey Park. (When all of this is
completed, you will be able to walk/bike to Terry Hershey Park (east of
Hwy. 6) along this trail. Also look for the new trail connecting the trail
behind the subdivision along the drainage canal to the new trail along
Baker Road.

(GT SECTION III) HOA ACC FORM
If you live in the Green Trails Section III Homeowners Association, an
application must be submitted prior to making exterior improvements
to your property. This includes painting (even if it is the same color),
roof replacement, pool installation, major landscaping improvements,
play equipment or anything else that changes the appearance of your
property. If you have any questions or need a form, please contact Real

be advised of the Committees approval or denial of the application
within 30 days.

KATY ISD OPENS BUS DRIVING PARENTS PROGRAM
With a nationwide shortage of bus drivers, the demand for field trip
drivers is at an all-time high. To combat this problem, Katy Independent
School District is inviting parents, grandparents and guardians of District
students to apply to become a BDP - Bus Driving Parent.
“Whether you’re saving for your child’s college fund, looking to
supplement your income or just want to play a crucial part in our Katy
ISD community, this is your opportunity,” said Executive Director of Katy
ISD Transportation Department Dr. Bill Wood. “Best of all you choose
when you work,” added Wood.

Bus Driving Parents will have the opportunity to further their role
in their student’s education and drive their student’s school on field
trips. BDP’s will be vetted and trained through Katy ISD, as well as
be compensated for the time they drive. Once they’ve earned their
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), completed training and earned
driving hours, BDP’s will be able to drive students to field trips as
often as they want. While the training upfront can take time, Bus
Driving Parents will help to provide an incredible service to the
district and expand learning experiences for students. To apply and

TWENTY-FOUR KATY ISD SCHOOLS EARN
TEXAS HONOR ROLL DISTINCTION
What better way for Katy Independent School District to end the
2018-19 school year! Out of its 65 campuses, Katy ISD is proud to
announce that 24 of its schools were named a Texas Honor Roll
School by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP).
The 2018-19 Texas Honor Roll includes:
Elementary: Alexander, Creech, Griffin, Holland, Kilpatrick,
Randolph, Shafer, Stanley, Williams, Wilson and Wolman.
Junior High: Beck, Beckendorff, Katy, McMeans, Memorial Parkway,
Seven Lakes, Tays and WoodCreek.
High School: Cinco Ranch, Mayde Creek, Seven Lakes, Taylor and
Tompkins.
After an extensive analysis of student data, ERP found that these Katy
ISD schools were clear leaders in getting students to grade level and
beyond. The 2018-19 Texas Honor Roll recognizes public elementary,
middle and high schools that consistently demonstrate high levels of
student academic achievement, improvement in student outcomes
over time and a closing of the achievement gaps. For high schools,
the Texas Honor Roll recognition includes measures of college
readiness. This year, the program recognized 855 higher performing
schools across the state. These schools become an accepted
example to other school districts seeking to learn and replicate the
best practices employed at these campuses. Katy ISD schools will be
provided with a banner to display at their campus.

HOW PARENTS CAN PREPARE
FOR BACK TO SCHOOL TIME

Back to school time is always a big transition, not only for children but
for parents.
While children are filled with excitement and first-day jitters, parents are
filled with thoughts of “Am I prepared enough?” To help eliminate these
thoughts and help you and your child prepare for the new school year,
all you need is a little organization and forethought. Here are 10 back
to school tips to kick-start the new year and get you prepared for a fresh
start.

1. Get back into your sleep routine. To help eradicate those stressful
school mornings, set up a regular bedtime and morning time routine to
help prepare your child for school. Begin your usual school sleep routine
about a week or so before school starts.
2. Shop for school supplies together. To get your child excited about
starting a new grade, shop for supplies together. Allow them to pick out
their own backpack, lunchbox, etc. This is a great way to give them a little
bit of responsibility too!
3. Re-establish school routines. Have your child practice getting back
into the rhythm of their daily school routine. You can do this by having
them wake up at the same time every day and eat around the same time
they would at school. About a week or so before school starts, plan a
few outside activities where your child will have to leave and come home
around the same time they would if they were in school. This will help
them be rested and ready for the big day.
4. Set up a homework station. Sit down with your child and together
designate a time and place where he can do his homework each day. This
can be somewhere quiet like in the den or even in the kitchen while you
are preparing dinner. Make sure to choose a time where you are available
in case your child needs your help.
5. Prepare for the unexpected. Working parents know that it can be
difficult to find a sitter when your child is sick. Before school even begins,
it’s a good idea to have a sitter already lined up in case you get that phone
call home from the nurse saying your child is ill.
6. Make an after-school game plan. Make a plan for where your child will
go after school lets out for the day. Depending upon the age of your child,
figure out if they will go to a neighbor’s house, an afterschool program
or be allowed to stay home by themselves. This will help eliminate any
confusion during the first few weeks.
7. Turn off the TV and video games. For a lot of children summertime is
filled with endless video games and TV programs. Children are usually
in shock when they begin school and realize that six hours of their day
is going to spent learning and not playing games and watching TV. Ease
your child into the learning process by turning off the electrics and
encouraging them to read or play quietly.
8. Review school material and information. For most parents, schools
send home a packet with a ton of information regarding their child’s
new teacher, important dates to remember, emergency forms and
transportation routines. Make sure that you read through this information
carefully and mark down all important dates on your calendar.
9. Get organized. The best way to prepare for back to school time is to
be organized. With school comes a massive amount of paperwork,
which can consume your household. Designate a spot in your house
for homework, permission slips and any other school-related papers.
This can help eliminate all of that paper clutter and make your life less
stressful.
10. Get your child’s yearly checkup. School and germs go hand in hand,
so it’s best to get your child’s yearly checkup before school even starts.
Get any required vaccinations and ask your pediatrician the best ways
your child can stay healthy throughout the school year.
Through preparation and organization, you can ensure that your child
will have a smooth transition to the start of the new school year. By doing
so, you and your child can enjoy the rest of your summer break.

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls
ages 4 to 18 for the FALL Season. Games start on October 12, 2019. FFPS
is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive
youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas,
FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater
Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including
one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal
playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive
coaching and more. No tryouts are required.

SCOUT TROOP 73 CELEBRATES 25 YEARS
Scout Troop 73 celebrated their 25 th anniversary on June 3 rd with their
Chartered Organization, Memorial Lutheran Church in Katy, TX. Scoutmaster
Paul Stirrup presented handmade appreciation gifts to Reverend John
Davis and the Troop’s Charter Representative, Glenn Hansen. Troop 73
was founded in 1994 with 9 Scouts. Currently, Troop 73 has over 65 Scouts
working on character development and learning how to leave a positive
impact in their community. The Troop has produced more than 60 Eagle
Scouts throughout the past 25 years. Their Eagle scouts have worked
on numerous projects over the years to leave a legacy in Katy. Troop 73
has had 5 Scoutmasters since forming. The first leader was Neal Cooper,
followed by Dan Welsh, Paul Hattermann, Ricky Nietsche and the current
leader Paul Stirrup. Troop 73 looks forward to the next 25 years.

Katy Chamber B2B Expo Hits the
Mark for Business
‘Unique opportunity,’ ‘educational,’ ‘great networking event,’ ‘fun,’ ‘wellorganized,’
‘a success,’ ‘informative’… not a bad list of descriptions for
any event! And, yet, those were some of the comments from participants
about the first Katy Area Chamber of Commerce Business to Business
(B2B) Expo, an event that featured 43 exhibitors and 200 attendees.
Thanks to its success, the Katy Chamber’s B2B Expo probably will land on
the radar for many businesses looking to grow, network and learn about
Katy area businesses. The B2B Expo was held May 16 th at the Wyndham
Houston West - Energy Corridor and organized by Chamber Board of
Directors Margaret Laney and Cristy Fontanilla. The expo included an array
of companies, products and services such as lending facilities, hospitals,
jewelers, the Katy YMCAs, internet companies, graphic designers, storage
facilities, marketers, restaurants, higher education, non-profits and many
more. Attendees could visit business exhibits to network, make connections
and learn how the products/services can assist their own businesses.
The event also featured an information-packed luncheon that provided
valuable intelligence on access to capital issues (provided by the US Small
Business Association) and procurement/purchasing tips from a panel featuring
some the area’s largest employers: Katy ISD, BP, Houston Community College
and Houston Methodist West Hospital. All told, the four-hour B2B Expo/
luncheon seemed to provide the right balance of networking and information.

event for AIA Houston and ArCH Foundation as well as one of the
top five revenue generating events for the City of Galveston. This year
over 60 teams have their eyes and shovels set on winning the prestigious
Golden Bucket Award. Firms begin months in advance generating ideas,
developing designs and assigning duties. On the day of the event the
teams, stretched along the beachfront, meticulously sculpt their piles
of sand and work non-stop for five hours. The judging of the sculptures
is rated on originality of concept, artistic execution, technical difficulty,
carving technique and utilization of the site.

MFAH presents Shooting the Moon, an installation of approximately 40

Dark Chocolate And Cinnamon
Frozen Custard
You could make this on
National Frozen Custard Day August 8th!
INGREDIENTS:
2 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup milk
3/4 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened dark cocoa powder
1 ounce high-quality dark chocolate (85%), finely chopped
5 egg yolks
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, plus more for dusting
DIRECTIONS:
Whisk cream, milk, sugar and cocoa powder in a saucepan over
medium heat until the mixture is thoroughly combined and the sugar
has dissolved. Bring almost to a simmer and stir in dark chocolate
until melted. Whisk egg yolks into the cream mixture and cook until
batter is slightly thickened, 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a container,
cover and refrigerate until chilled, at least 6 hours.
Stir cinnamon into chilled custard batter and freeze in an ice cream
machine following manufacturer’s instructions. Sprinkle frozen
custard with more cinnamon to serve.

INGREDIENTS:
2 cups ginger ale, chilled
2 cups orange soda, chilled
1/2 cup milk
4 scoops orange sherbet
4 scoops vanilla ice cream
DIRECTIONS:
Stir ginger ale, orange soda and milk together in a pitcher.
Divide orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream equally between 4
glasses. Pour ginger ale mixture over ice cream into each glass.

Garden Tips
For August
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.
• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves
and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of
iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates.
• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little
bone meal around the roots.
• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall
growth.
• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.
• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have
areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t
brought under control. There is a new generation going
now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban
to stop the damage.
• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine
grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a
fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing
while it puts down roots. You will need to water the
new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also
creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun
can dry the turf.
• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up,
add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for
a month or so. Add in any amendments like micronutrients.
Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms
have a favorable environment.
