development rights and the planning

A fantastic example of this was Weeks Lane
Farm Barns just outside of Biddenden.
BTF Partnership worked with the owners
of Weeks Lane Farm Barns and Kent
Design Studio to gain Prior Approval for the
conversion of two detached barns to two
residential dwellings and then later selling
the site to Southern Elm Developments. The
scheme was later amended by Kent Design
Studio and now consists of two detached, fourbedroom,
south facing barn conversions in an
attractive rural location opposite Chart Hills
Golf Club on the outskirts of Biddenden, Kent.
The houses were individually designed to a
high specification with open plan kitchen,
dining and living room leading out onto a
large patio area. They were identical in terms
of accommodation which on the ground floor
includes a utility room, a WC, a separate study
and a ground floor double bedroom with
en-suite shower room. On the first floor there
is a galleried landing and three large double
bedrooms, two with en-suite shower rooms and
a large family bathroom.
The properties also have a double garage
with ample parking areas and the rear
gardens which face south and look out onto
pasture land are an outstanding feature.

Back pain and sciatica ruled my life
for 16 years… but now I’m running
again thanks to IDD Therapy
Sue James is a retired tailor and
keen track-and-field athlete, but not
long ago, excruciating back pain
and sciatica threatened to put an
end to her beloved sports forever.
Sue explains: “The pain started in my
right leg; my partner Alan and I drove
to athletics meetings and I’d find that it
flared up during or after the journey.”
Life became more difficult when
Sue developed lower back pain; she
couldn’t sit for more than half an
hour without terrible pain. Going
out for a meal or to the cinema
became impossible for her.
“My GP prescribed strong painkillers,
but the side-effects were so severe,
I had to stop taking them. I tried
chiropractic treatment and I even went
in an oxygen chamber… but it didn’t
make any difference to my pain.”
Eventually Sue was referred
for an MRI scan which revealed
degenerative damage to the
spinal discs and facet joints and
compression of some nerve roots.
“My consultant arranged nerve
block injections, but I had three
rounds without any improvement. He
suggested surgery, but I didn’t want to
have an operation with the recovery
time and possible risks involved.”
Last summer Sue read about IDD
Therapy, a targeted disc treatment
which uses gentle pulling forces to draw
apart spinal segments where discs
are bulging or damaged, removing
pressure from trapped nerves.
Sue discovered that IDD Therapy

When you’ve lived somewhere for a while
there are certain buildings you drive
past frequently that always catch your
eye and make you wonder: what’s it like in there?
For years now I’ve driven past a grey stone
compound on Hastings’ northern limit, longing
for a peep inside the intriguing line of roofs,
gables and chimneys forming an almost circular
arrangement of buildings behind high stone walls.
I knew it had once been a convent and was
now residential, but what and how and when
and whom? And who lives there now? So it was
with great excitement that I drove inside those
walls and drew up outside to meet the owner of
one of what is now seven dwellings on the site.

me inside the house she shares with partner
Jake Mintrim and their two daughters,
my years of curiosity proved to be more
than justified. The house is even more
intriguing once you get inside it, with the
family’s original style – and Jake’s skills as a
landscape gardener – greatly adding to it.
The first area you step into is an unusually
long corridor with a striking arch at one
end and high windows on the outside facing
front door side. Adding to the drama the
walls are painted black for about 40cm from
the bottom, drawing the eye along. Above,
coloured corded lighting cables are looped
along the length of it, almost like bunting.
“It’s a very long corridor,” said Juliet, “so
I wanted to make something of it.”
Walking to the left you come to the very lofty
stairwell, opening up to a gallery on the first
floor, where the looped, coloured cables – from
Dyke & Dean in Hastings – are strung across
the void as though ready for a circus trapeze act.
The scale enhanced further by two extra large
frames, one containing an old film poster found
in another Hastings resource – one of the many
brilliant junk emporia – the other a collage of
Cuban posters from a book, which Juliet had
framed together. “There’s so much space we
thought we should have fun with it,” she says.
All these clever details make it clear that
Juliet and Jake were not at all daunted by
the scale and special character of the house
– even though they moved there from a
two-bedroom flat in London’s Willesden.
Sitting on mixed vintage chairs at
the – genuine – marble-topped Saarinen
pedestal table in the kitchen, Juliet tells
me how they came to make it home.
“We made the move four and a half years
ago, when the girls were eight and five. I was
born and bred in Willesden Green, but I knew
this area because my grandparents lived in
Winchelsea and I have family in Tenterden.
“We love how close the real countryside is
and the beach. It’s a great place for the kids
and it’s a good commute up to London from
Battle, only a 10-minute drive, which I need
because I still go back up two days a week
to my business. I run the Pitta Patta Dance
School in Primrose Hill, teaching all different
styles of dance for children up to 17 years.”
But as well as the convenience and adjacent
attractions, it was the quirky town itself

that was right for the family. “It was an adventure to
move here – people in Hastings don’t follow the rules.”
And Juliet had an instant intro to that unconventional
Hastings creative community, via Sam Bruce, owner of
the fabulous In House Junkie online store for wonderful
one-off decorative pieces. Her house was featured in
Wealden Times / Surrey Homes June 2018 and her
name comes up frequently as a source of wonderful
items in many of the magazine’s featured houses.
“I met Sam in London at a playgroup,” says Juliet. “We have
kids of the same age. Then she moved to Tunbridge Wells and
I moved to Hastings, but Sam’s mum Helen Bartlett lives here
and Sam used to have her shop in St Leonards. So she was
our intro to Hastings and the edgy, artistic, lovely people.”
And handily, considering the number and scale of
the windows in Holmhurst, Helen makes wonderful
curtains – she’s made all of them for Juliet. But
more of the soft furnishings to come, there’s plenty
to look at in the first room we come to.
Designed by Juliet and Jake, the working part of the
kitchen is confined to one wall with cupboards in the most
appealing dusty pink, with a geometric pattern in copper
a feature on some of the doors and copper handles. The
worktop is poured concrete and the wall lights are from
eBay – but shift up one level above the white subway
splashback tiles and a bold painting shifts the mood of the
room from purely functional, to more of a hang out space.
Which is exactly what you see when you turn around and
take in the funky bright-red vintage chair and lamp with
an outrageous 1970s psychedelic print lampshade, with a
boldly coloured painting by Juliet’s mother on the wall.
The tiles on the kitchen floor are from Lewes tile
company Material Plans, put in by Jake – which is
how they both like to do things. “We come up with

the ideas together and then Jake does the work.”
To see more of what Jake does, we head out of the
kitchen through a large glass door into the garden, where a
terrace runs along, with a lovely old stone arch to the right
and a splendid old wellhead in the centre of the lawn.
I didn’t know it while I was looking at this lovely artefact,
but it’s actually a key to the history of this whole group
of buildings – which I have since unearthed online.
The wellhead is from Venice, brought over by the
eminent Victorian travel writer Augustus Hare. It forms
a centrepiece in the garden of the mansion he built here,
extending from existing buildings dating back to the
16th and 18th centuries, with the money made from
his very successful series of illustrated travel guides.
He noted in his journal: ‘It is an early Venetian font
or wellhead, which came from one of the houses pulled
down when the new street was made from S. Moise
to S. Marco. It is not later than 12th century.’
So a pretty amazing thing to have in your garden –
and how fitting that it should now belong to someone
whose profession is making the most of outdoor
spaces, which Jake has done so cleverly here.
Solving the topographical problem of near vertical
slopes, which affects so many Hastings gardens,
as the town is built over a series of hills, Jake has
created a flat lawn which leads onto a large deck.
It’s immediately clear what a great entertaining space
this is, high up so it gets the sun and with lovely views
looking out over an adjacent tract of ancient woodland,
set off by a thicket of giant bamboo that was already there.
Crucially, Jake has treated the wood of the deck so it doesn’t
become a slippery death trap in damp British weather.
Next to it is a splendid border, designed by Juliet’s mother
and stocked as advised by eminent garden designer

Tony Howard, of Harborough Nurseries, who Jake works
with on landscaping projects. The lovely magnolia tree
next to the wellhead was already perfectly in place.
The garden has a very special contemplative air – perhaps
enhanced by the nuns’ graveyard, which is still there in
another area, through the stone arch – and appreciating
its huge potential was one of the many things that attracted
Juliet and Jake to the property when they first came along
to view it.
“We weren’t going to look at the house when we first
saw the listing, because it was attached on both sides,
but when we did we couldn’t believe it. The garden was
in a state of rack and ruin, which apparently put other
potential buyers off, but for us it was an opportunity.”
After the garden tour, we head back into the house
via a French window, which is – although, once
again, I didn’t know it at the time – a clue to the next
stage of Holmhurst’s history, when in the early 20th
century the house became a convent and school.
With Augustus Hare long departed from this
world, it was by then a ruin, but that didn’t put
off the redoubtable Mother Mary Agnes, founder
of the Community of the Holy Family, at all.
An Italiophile, like Mr Hare, she loved the ruined
building because she appreciated the way he had attempted
to create a small part of Italy in Hastings. To her it

was the perfect place to found a school dedicated
to ‘teaching women of all ages’. One of whom,
a few decades on, was called Joanna Lumley.
The huge sitting room Juliet and I have stepped
into – through one of the three French windows in the
bay, each topped with another multi-paned window,
drenching the space in light and views of the lovely
garden – was once called the Edgeworth classroom.
Although it is hard to imagine, with that enticing
outlook, how any of the girls ever paid attention.
While it is easy to imagine that huge room, furnished
to scale with a huge sofa that was very handily given
to them by one of Jake’s grateful clients, full of happy
party guests, wandering in and out through those
windows, there is another sitting room with a very
different appeal at the other end of the house, all
the way along that corridor and through the arch.
This lovely cosy room, with original Delft tiles around
the fireplace and stone-mullioned windows, dramatically
painted in Farrow & Ball’s Downpipe Grey, has a very

special atmosphere. A friend of Juliet’s who attended the
school told her it was the 6th form common room and
the atmosphere of joyous refuge remains. “This is the
grown up room, with no TV. We play games in here.”
With one bright egg yolk yellow velvet chair, finished
with deep fringing, a blue and white Moroccan table
adding bright points and a refectory table perfect
to put a Monopoly board on, it’s the kind of room
where special memories of family life are created.
Upstairs, the arrangement of space is the same
as the ground floor. From the matching upper
corridor there are views north and east right
over to the High Weald and at the western end
of it, the biggest bedroom I have ever been in
above the sitting room/Edgeworth classroom.
This is used as a guest bedroom – very popular
for sleepovers with large rabbles of kids – and I
admit I had been wondering why on earth they
didn’t have that as the Master. That was, until Juliet
showed me into the actual master bedroom…
The upper twin of the Snug, it has the same
stone mullioned windows with wonderful treeframed
views all the way over Hastings Old Town
and on a clear day, right out to sea. All of which

can be seen from the huge bed which Jake built. “He’s tall
and has always wanted a bed big enough for him with a
headboard and a footboard, so he made it himself.’
Like the Snug below, the bedroom has a very
special calm and nurturing vibe. Once you’ve tuned
into it, you don’t really ever want to leave.
Juliet’s friend, who was a pupil at the school, told
her that in those days it was the Headmistress’s office.
We don’t know what Augustus Hare used it for and
with those lovely old windows, perhaps it was part of
one of the original buildings, even before his time.
What is clear, is that Juliet and Jake have created the latest
happy chapter in the long history of this very special building.

Woolley and Wallis
The last 12 months have seen leading regional
auction house Woolley and Wallis break a string of
auction records, including a new UK auction record
for the Chinese artist Zhang Da Qian (1899-1983).
Known as the ‘Chinese Picasso’, since he was a
contemporary of, and even met, the prolific Spanish
artist, Da Qian is one of the best-selling artists that
most UK buyers have never heard of. His large
scroll painting, ‘Grand View of Chao Mountain’,
used his signature ink splash technique and drew
widespread interest from Chinese buyers when
it featured in Woolley and Wallis’s Fine Chinese
Paintings sale in May, selling for £2.6 million.

One of the most memorable lots over
the past year here at Ewbank’s was
sold in the June Fine Jewellery
Auction. Although this is in
fact the fifth most valuable
lot sold over the past twelve
months (top price over that
period being £75,000 paid for
a Maclaren Supercar), this was a
truly beautiful piece of jewellery.
A late 19th Century sapphire and
diamond brooch with a central mixed cut
sapphire of 18 carats, set in a frame of rose
cut and old cut diamonds. The Brooch sold
for £37k to a buyer in the room at Ewbank’s
popular flagship quarterly Jewellery Sale.

It’s difficult to believe just how much of England’s green
and pleasant land lies a mere hour’s train journey from
the capital, and yet this breathtaking scenery with its
rolling pastures and majestic woodlands really is but a stone’s
throw from London. Meander off a main road pretty much
anywhere in this deservedly labelled ‘area of outstanding
natural beauty’ and you’ll find yourself twisting and turning
through narrow leafy lanes, and losing your bearings
among mists of cow parsley and luxuriant hedgerows.
Somewhere between the historic village of Mayfield
and the market town of Heathfield, down one such
leafy lane, lies a collection of Arts & Crafts houses
built in the 1930s by a local firm of architects by the
name of The Lions Green Building Company.
These houses were intended as homes for retiring officers
after the war. Quirkily, each house was either built with a

clock concealed within an interior wall, or
with an inscribed brick in the front wall.
The houses on this acre plot were unique,
each with interesting architectural details,
including eyebrow windows, thatched
roofs and even medieval-style turrets.
These substantially built and comfortable
homes have stood the test of time, been
loved and re-loved by families through the
years, and still proudly bear the hallmarks
of their original designs. And so it is with
this Lions Green house. Look carefully and
you can see the words ‘Built by the Lions
Green Company 1936’ baked into one of
the bricks, somewhere near the front door.
Stepping into the light, airy and
generously proportioned hall, it’s difficult
to imagine that this period house could be
anything other than the stylish and relaxed
home that invites you in. So, it’s interesting
chatting to Karen and Rafe about what
initially led them to this property and
what changes they have made since 2010.
“We’d been living in a grotty bungalow
which we’d wanted to totally redevelop,”
explains Karen. “It was so damp, there
was black mould growing up the walls
and an army of slugs invaded the kitchen
every night. We survived this for two

years only to be told that planning permission for our project
wouldn’t be granted.”
The couple decided it was time to move on, and things
were at a pretty low ebb when Rafe spotted a house in the
right area coming up for sale. Karen first glimpsed the house
backlit against a meadow brimming with buttercups on a
summer’s afternoon. “It was properly in the heart of the
countryside,” she remembers, “and just what we wanted.”
This was a good 10 years ago and the pair have spent this
time transforming the house into the perfect family home.
They loved the solid build that often comes with 1930s
architecture and have kept or adapted many of the original
features, whilst bringing the house in line with today’s lifestyle.
Karen made the brave decision to start with the exterior,
rather than giving in to the temptation to renovate the
interior. “I was adamant that I wanted a lovely garden,” she
explains. They completely re-levelled and drained the entire
outside area, which is now landscaped to wrap comfortably
around the house, allowing for a large and relaxed Yorkstone
terrace which positively invites you to sit and relax with a gin
and tonic. Most of the garden is a gloriously smooth picture
postcard lawn, while a terrace of beautifully maintained beds
step up beyond the kitchen to the pool area. She was right to
follow the perceived wisdom: ‘always start with the garden’ as
it does take years for the planting to mature to its full glory.
Inside, the house was a monument to the previous
decades and, as Karen remembers, “very dark and poky”.
Every ceiling, every wall, was covered in that old favourite
Artex and studded with fake black beams, and every
floor boasted swirly green carpets. The windows were the
standard 1930s curved bays and the brick fireplaces were
the traditional rainbow shape. “These were both original
features,” says Karen, “but we really didn’t like them!”
The first major build got underway in 2012, when the
kitchen was added to the back of the house and what
was once the old kitchen became the dining room.
After living with a dark, poky kitchen for years, Karen was
keen to have a large, light family space. She knew exactly
what she was looking for and after visiting practically every
showroom in the South East, finally chose Neptune for
the supply and design. The white marble worktops blend
beautifully with the soft grey units and dark walnut floor,
which continues through the dining room to the hall. The
stunning ceramic light from Heal’s and the white glossy
range add a touch of glamour. It’s a very serene space and
hardly surprising that their 12-year-old daughter spends

the table and chairs add a homely touch for family dining

most of her spare time here baking all sorts of delicious treats.
The two rooms which housed the old kitchen and the dining room
became the dining area and at this point the curved window bays here
and throughout were adapted to a classic rectangular shape, allowing
the rooms to be flooded with light, and simultaneously creating the
ever comfortable window seats. This room features some of the house’s
original panelling and so the couple decided to keep this feature
and continue it through into the hall, living room and library.
“We didn’t use interiors designers,” explains Rafe, but we had great
input from our builders, Neil Hammond of AJ Hammond Builders Ltd,
and also from Sabre Joinery in Burwash, who created beautiful interior
doors to matching the existing originals, as well as all the panelling.”
It was during this phase of the build that the windows presented
a major conundrum. Most were small with traditional diamond
panes and Karen knew immediately she wanted these replaced
with larger Sussex-style windows. However, some had already been
updated with UPVC, so they had to decide between the two newer
types of window. “In the end, we chose the Sussex-style windows,”
says Karen. “It cost us a fortune, but we’ve never regretted it.”
In the dining room, as in the living room, the stately fireplaces, from
The Fireplace Company in Crowborough, are handmade in limestone.
“We have always loved spending time in the Cotswolds,” explains
Rafe, “and wanted to evoke the mood of a Cotswolds country home.”
Sandstone sills and quoins to the exterior have also been added to the
same effect, as well as the use of oak for the garage, porch and balcony.
The living room simply invites you to kick off your shoes and
relax into a sumptuous chair. “The beach house in Jane Fonda’s

Karen, “We loved the dark wooden floor with
rugs and the New England-style shelving.”
Despite the muted colour scheme (Farrow & Ball’s
palette has been used throughout) there are pops
of colour here and there; fuchsia pink armchairs in
the dining room and a fabulous acid yellow in some
of the cushions and soft furnishings. In fact, Karen
has chosen bold Osborne & Little yellow wallpaper
through the hall both the downstairs and up. “I like
a shock of colour every now and again,” she says.

with the help of our brilliant joiner Steve from Sabre,
who indulged Rafe’s childhood love of secret doors. The
library shelves completely disguise the door to the snug,
to the delight of our children’s visiting school friends.”
Upstairs Karen and Rafe’s bedroom overlooks the
buttercup field, which helped cement Karen’s decision
to buy the house. The pièce de résistance is the fabulous
oak balcony, designed and built by a local craftsman, “it’s
the perfect place for a leisurely breakfast,” she says.
The understated elegance in both bedroom and
bathroom was inspired by a beautiful hotel in the
Italian lakes. “We loved the natural tones they used
to create a calm but luxurious environment”.

Rewind & Revitalise
Josephine Fairley explains the beneficial effects the right
make-up products and techniques can have on ageing skin
It happens to most of us, at an
uncertain age: one day we wake up,
reach for our make-up bag, go through
the usual motions of doing our face –
and realise it’s just not working the way
it used to. With confidence wobbling,
one of two things tend to happen. We
decide that ‘more must be more’, and
overdo things. Or alternatively, with
images of spider-lashed Barbara Cartland
or lipstick-smeared Baby Jane haunting our
nightmares, we start to use less make-up –
which instead brings the risk of fading away. I’ve
seen it happen, time after time. Complexions get
paler. Hair colour tends to do the same, and brows,
with it. And before we know it, we’re almost ghosts
of our former, younger, more attractive-feeling selves.
Yet used judiciously, and with some adjustments,
make-up can absolutely roll back the years. Indeed,
as consultant dermatologist Dr. Andrew Markey once
observed to me, “More women should explore what
make-up can do for them before taking a leap into the
world of cosmetic surgery.” So, over my decades as a
beauty editor, I’ve pumped many top make-up artists
for the how-to. Here are the key lessons learned…
Foundation is your friend, not your foe. Says Mary
Greenwell: “Every woman over 40 has to wear foundation.
Ironically, up until that point it can be ageing.” But go
lightly, and choose the right formulation. You almost
certainly want ‘light-reflective pigments’, which help recreate
the radiance of younger skin, without looking too shiny.
As the creator of my all-time favourite age-defying base,
the (weirdly-named and somewhat pricy) By Terry Terrybly
Densillis Foundation, £78 for 30ml, make-up genius Terry
de Gunzburg knows her stuff here. “After your forties,
skintone is no longer uniform – which makes you look tired.
Your complexion may be a bit red, or look a little shadowy
or grey and sallow. But this doesn’t mean just applying
more of the foundation you’ve always worn (if you have).
Layers of heavy foundation make all lines look worse.” Use
a foundation brush and light, feathery strokes; microfibre
brushes – like the brilliant Cailyn O, Wow! Brush, £12.49
(amazon.co.uk) – deliver an incredibly seamless finish; first
apply the foundation to the back of your hand and pick
it up from there with the brush. Other great age-defying
foundation finds include Guerlain L’Essentiel, £44 for 30ml
(best applied with the fantastic matching charcoal-infused
fibre brush, £38) and Nars Natural Radiant Longwear
Foundation, £35 for 30ml. None of these, you’ll note, are
inexpensive. But foundation is one area I’d never ever skimp
on – and that becomes even more important as we age.
Conceal flaws with a whisper-light concealer. Where you
need extra coverage – under-eye shadows, for instance – use
a light-reflective concealer and pat into skin. I’m a massive
fan of the new Giorgio Armani Power Fabric Concealer, £32
(it comes in an impressive 18 shades) – or check out the
new options in the legendary YSL Touche Éclat line-up.
Powder lightly. When face powder settles dustily into lines,
it looks Miss Havisham-esque on the best of us. So Mary
Greenwell recommends using a smaller 2cm (¾-inch) brush,
to apply powder. “This is small enough to make it easy
to avoid getting powder into crinkles, which emphasises
them,” she advises. Use it just on the T-zone, which at this
stage in life is probably the only bit that needs de-shining.
Rethink your blush. Ariane Poole – who is of a certain
age herself and has a wonderful make-up range that
accommodates the needs of more mature women
(arianepoole.com) – observes: “The placement of your
blush has to change as you age. You need to move slightly
lower down with your blusher placement and focus on
the apples of your cheeks, rather than higher up the
cheekbone. This will give your cheekbones a lift and make
your face appear less jowly as the colour is centred in the
face. If you do apply your blusher upwards towards the
corner of your eye this will just highlight the crow’s feet
and lines and actually make the eyes look smaller.”
And avoid ‘tawny’ shades for cheeks. Adds Ariane: “We
lose pigment as we age, and our skin gets paler, so we
need that pop of colour. We notice the pigment change
in our hair but it’s more difficult to notice the change in
the skin so women will often continue using their matte
brown shades, but this will age you. You want that pop of
colour that gives you a healthy, youthful flush.” (A perfect

My best advice would be to make
like Goldilocks and try out several
different makeover options at your
nearest department store, see which
eye look pushes your buttons, and
try to mimic the technique, then
possibly – deep breath – investing
in those exact products. But unless
you’re 110% happy with what you
see in the mirror, don’t be pressured.

to define the shape of your eyes
differently, as you age. ‘Using a dark
powder shadow to create the “crease”
in the socket, as you might have done
when you were 20, just won’t work,”
advises Terry de Gunzburg. Her preferred
technique is a sheer wash of eyeshadow – for

lid, then focusing on eyeliner and mascara
to frame the eyes. Or try Mary Greenwell’s
approach: she recommends applying a light
toned rose-pink on the bottom half of the
top eyelid (closest to the lashes), to open
up the eye area. And, Mary adds, “Don’t be
frightened to play with shimmer or worry about
highlighting lines and creases. It’s all about
the placement and technique. Matte colours
can sometimes be ageing, whereas shimmer
adds luminosity and softness to the skin.”

using a mirror that’s a good 60cm away, so she
can gauge the effect from the distance most people
see you from. (Then use a hand mirror while you use
a blender brush to ensure the edges are seamless.)
don’t let your brows fade away. Oh, this is one of the
biggest ‘age-rs’ of all: Disappearing Brow Syndrome. As the
years roll by, brows become more sparse or go grey, causing
the face to lose definition – because quite simply, brows
are your face ‘architecture’. I often have my brows tinted
(they are literally invisible naturally), and it takes me from
‘Where’s Jo?’ to ‘There’s Jo!’ When the tint fades (as it does
after two weeks), I have an entire arsenal of products to fill
them in. But you need to balance your brows with your
eye make-up. More on your eyes means subtler brows’ less
eye make-up means that you can play up your brows.
Eyebrow product preference is incredibly personal. Today
there are powders, gels, pencils, in many different shades.
So I honestly cannot recommend too highly that you
take yourself off to a Benefit counter – they’re the ‘brow
kings’ – and ask a consultant there to show you which are
your key products for brow enhancement in their range.
They offer almost a dozen different products and a wide
shade spectrum. Personally I couldn’t live without their
Benefit Gimme Brow, £18, which is a tinted brow gel that
grooms wayward hairs while sweeping on subtle colour, and
Precisely, My Brow!, £21.50 a really fine propelling pencil
for light, feathery strokes – brilliant for filling in gaps.
But a PS: if you powder your face, always brush
brows through afterwards with a brow brush (or an old
toothbrush repurposed for the task); Mary Greenwell
notes: “Otherwise, they can look dusty and dirty. And
‘clean’ brows are very important at this time in life.”
Accentuate your lash-line. Forget liquid liner at this time
in life. It’s fiddly and difficult to get right, even when you’re
twenty-something – never mind when you have to factor in a
slight shake of the hands. Use a liner pencil instead – and as
Mary Greenwell advises, “apply it along the natural lash line,
getting right into the roots of the lashes.” She adds: “When
using an eyeliner, always build the liner up slowly, focusing
on the outer corners of the eyes. Step back and take a second
look, and you can always add more until you’re happy with
the overall shape.” (Echoes of Lulu’s wisdom, above.)
Avoid eyelash clump. The No. 1 Baby Jane/Barbara Cartland
make-up nightmare. Be sure to work the mascara into the
roots of your lashes – try a zig-zaggy movement – because
that’s what really creates the illusion of length. But the big
challenge is that eyelashes tend to become more sparse over
time – hence the risk of spikiness, because there are simply
wider gaps between the lashes. This is the time to get into
the habit (if you haven’t already) of wiping your mascara
wand on a tissue before applying to your eyes. If you do get
clumps, don’t touch them; if you try to wipe mascara away,
your fingers are more likely to push the lashes together. Invest
in what’s called a ‘spool’ brush, which looks like a mascara
wand, to sweep through – or thoroughly wash and dry an old
mascara wand and keep it handy for tarantula emergencies.
Watch – and learn. I’d also point you in the direction
of some fab online tutorials for older faces. Lisa
Eldridge does these particularly well; she has a raft of
watchable and instructive how-to videos on her website
lisaeldridge.com. Prop an iPad up in front of your
mirror, and follow her make-up lessons. Genius.
And remember: less isn’t always more. There’s one
exception to the rule, according to Bobbi Brown.
“If you’ve never worn make-up, it’s never too late
to start. We may tend to get washed out as we age
– but make-up makes up for that.” Hear, hear.

prospect of exercise into easily manageable activities
that can be slotted into a busy lifestyle
This summer i will be heading
to the beach to reap the many
benefits of the seaside. Fresh
sea air, the sand between your toes
and the ability to switch off from the
stresses of daily life can all contribute
to increased wellbeing – and the
beach itself offers the perfect location
for exercise outside of the gym.
So if you’re going on holiday this
summer, by the sea or pool, use this
opportunity to feel your very best and
increase your wellbeing both physically
and mentally. Kick off your trainers or
sandals and go barefoot, as not only will
this give you a better workout on the sand,
walking on both wet and dry sand will
challenge your body in different ways.
Scientists continually say that it takes
more energy to walk or run on sand
than it does to move at the same pace
on hard surfaces, and that energy is used
to strengthen all the lower body muscles
– especially your calves, quadriceps and
glutes. The drier the sand, the harder it is.
Regular runners may prefer wetter, firmer
sand in order to maintain proper form.

on hard ground and all the while
you are getting a free foot exfoliation
from being barefoot in the sand!
Walking in the surf: Just walking in
ankle deep water is a great challenge,
working against the ebb and flow of the
tide and you have yourself a great lower

muscles to stay upright! The deeper you
go the more challenging you can make it.
Playing in the waves: Jumping up and
down in the surf is great fun and a
challenge to your entire body. Diving
under waves and swimming against the tide
is a great way to work out, with the ocean
providing extra resistance, working your
muscles and improving your fitness levels
But not only is the beach good for
physical activities it can also help to
increase your mental wellbeing. Spending
time in the sunshine can increase your
levels of vitamin D and research has shown
that this can help to improve calcium
absorption, stress levels and your mood
(an especially great advantage if you find
that family holidays often turn out to be
rather stressful!)
Now we’ve spent all that time in the
water, and by the water, we need to
focus on drinking water! We all know
drinking plenty of water is important,
we all (probably!) know we should be
drinking more than we actually do, but
do you know how crucial water is to
everything that is going on in our bodies?
It helps to flush out waste and bacteria,
it assists in weight management, leads to
increased energy levels and it naturally
plumps and hydrates our skin. This is
particularly so in the warmer weather
when it’s essential to stay hydrated
(even more so if we are exercising)
Learn to listen to your body: yawning
and daytime fatigue can quite often be
signs of dehydration. Often we mistake
this for being hungry, so before you reach
for that sugary snack have a glass of water
first and you will probably find that ‘pang
of hunger’ just disappears! Make carrying
around a water bottle your new habit
and make sure you refill it frequently.

• 300g of 3 types of fruit – tomatoes,
dried apricots, blackberries
• 300g of 3 types of cheese – cubed
Cheddar, mozzarella balls, Kent Blue
• 300g olives – large green perello
and black marinated, pitted
• 1 x loaf of sourdough bread – we use
Light House Bakery Black Russian
• 600g biscuits for cheese, 3 types –
Bath Oliver, poppyseed, breadsticks
Sharing Platter
Gap filler ideas:
• Vegetable crisps
• Pistachio nuts
• Pretzels
Putting it together
1Begin by choosing a large platter
and using 3 points, start by
placing the elements in all 3 areas.
2Decant your dips into 3 small
bowls and place in a triangle
formation on or near the board.
3Next start with the meats
and snuggle each one
into little mounds.
4Slice the peppers and place near
the first meat you put down.
Baton the carrots and place closely to
the second meat. Wash and cut the
celery into long strips and place into
a glass placing by the third meat.
5Next, put the tomatoes next
to the pepper, the blackerries
next to the batons, and the apricots
next to the glass of celery.
6Using the fruit as a barrier
add the cheese. I like to cube
the cheddar and place near the
pepper, slice the Blue and place
next to the blackberries and put
the mozzarella near the apricots.
7Put the olives into two
bowls or jam jars.
8Now slice your loaf and
arrange your biscuits.
9The final stage is to fill the gaps
with the crisps, nuts and pretzels.
There are no rules here. But
10 this is a guide to variety
and weights. Consider colour and
different heights with the carbs
and seasonality when buying
your vegetables and fruit.

Courgette Spanakopita
Serves 6 Prep Time: 40 mins + overnight resting
• 1kg courgettes (grated)
• 2 tsp salt
• 50g grated cheddar
• Salt and freshly ground
pepper for seasoning
• 1 tsp Nigella seeds
• 1 beaten egg
•
For the filo pastry:
• 100g flour
• 50ml hot water
• 30g of hot smoked
rapeseed oil
• 5g salt
Courgette Preparation:
1Grate the courgettes
and sprinkle with salt.
Cover with a tea towel and
leave overnight in a colander
with a bowl underneath.
2The next day, submerge
the courgettes in water
to rinse the salt from them.
Then gather in a clean tea
towel and ring out to get
rid of any moisture. Mix
the courgettes with salt and
pepper and grated cheddar.
Method to make filo pastry:
Place the flour, hot water,
hot smoked rapeseed
oil and salt into a mixer
or bowl and stir until
incorporated, then knead
for 5 mins. Cover and rest
overnight in the fridge
Assembling the spanakopita:
1Take the filo pastry
and roll out as long
and thin as possible. Then
using heavily floured hands
stretch and manipulate the
pastry so it is paper thin.
2Make a sausage shape
of the courgette filling
along one end of the pastry
and roll away from you.
Taking the long filled sausage
of courgette stuffed filo,
carefully roll into a flat spiral
and place on a baking tray.
To cook:
Brush with the beaten
egg and sprinkle the
nigella seeds over the top.
Bake for 45 minutes at
180°C slice and serve.

Goats’ cheese, Parma Ham & Nectarine Salad
Serves 6 Prep Time: 10 mins
• 4 x ripe nectarines (sliced
into wedges)
• 80g Parma ham or Prosciutto
• 100g salad leaves/rocket
• 50g toasted pine nuts
• 6 tbsp of rapeseed or olive
oil (we like Pure Kent Oak

Wash and spin the salad leaves.
Wrap the wedges of nectarine

to grow in the veg garden as colder months approach
There might be gaps appearing on the plot this month.
I’m hoping it means you’ve been able to celebrate
all that hard work and harvest some produce, but it
could well be that disaster has struck. Disasters come in many
forms: life events, pests – even the weather can cause crops
to fail. You may not have got round to growing anything yet
(time flies when you intend to grow your own). Take heart
and gather yourself. There are still plenty of vegetables that
you can sow now that will mature in just a few weeks, or for
a harvest later in the autumn and winter. It may be too late to
sow plants that take a long time to grow, like leeks, parsnips,
purple sprouting broccoli, but there is definitely still time.
Fresh new crops for autumn and winter
Sow some hardy vegetables now and you will have a supply
of fresh produce for the coming season. Radishes, beetroot,
mangetout, short carrots and dwarf beans can be sown
now to harvest in under 12 weeks. You can make sowings
of kale, Swiss chard, spinach and pak choi this month and
have a supply of nutritious greens for autumn and, because
these are hardy crops, right through the winter too.
I grow a few stalwarts to last the winter; kale, Swiss chard
and perpetual spinach are consistently reliable. Kale is hardy
in the coldest of winters, heroically shrugging off frost and
snow, but you may need to protect chard and spinach with
a cloche. These plants do not grow much in the winter
months, but will tick over and act like an outdoor larder,
supplying you with fresh green leaves whenever you need
them. Winter lettuces, mustards, pak choi and other oriental
leaves are also surprisingly hardy. The good news about
growing these crops at the end of the season is that the
insect pests begin to disappear as the weather gets colder,
but you may still need to net brassicas like kale, as pigeons
find them irresistible and will shred any unprotected leaves.
Productive patios
Many vegetables are suitable for growing in containers; but
remember that a plant in a pot is your prisoner and reliant
on you for adequate food and water. Vegetables are greedy
and often thirsty, so will need regular care and attention in

order to provide a decent crop. Short carrots, beetroot, radishes,
leafy greens and pea shoots are reliable and quick, so may be
less demanding than other crops if you are short on time. Sow a
packet of fast growing salad leaves and lettuce into a planter by the
kitchen door, for tasty cut-and-come-again leaves that will appear
within a month. If you just pick off the outer leaves, you’ll be able
to keep them going for the rest of the summer and into autumn.
Filling gaps
As you harvest vegetables this month you may well be creating
gaps in your plot. Fill these with fast growing crops such
as rocket, khol rabi, radishes, sugar-snap peas, dwarf beans
and salad leaves. Grow leafy plants in semi-shade, or keep
them well watered, as they may bolt (run to seed) in hot, dry
weather. If you are eager to cram as much into the season as
possible, you can sow into guttering pipes before the gaps
appear, so that a ready made row can slide into the ground
once you’ve harvested the current crop. This is a useful way
of ensuring a constant supply of peas, beans and salad.

Green manure
‘Nature abhors a vacuum’ so Aristotle is rumoured to
have said, which when translated to the vegetable garden,
means that any bare soil will be filled immediately –
with weeds. If you are not keen on growing lots more
vegetables this year, then beat nature to it and fill your
vacuum with a green manure. This will keep the weeds
down, stop soil erosion and when it’s been dug in, add
nutrients to the soil and improve the soil structure.
It is not compulsory to keep your plot productive all year
round, but it is entirely possible. The plants do grow a little
more slowly from midsummer onwards, but so do the weeds
and pests. At this time of the year there are less pressing tasks
elsewhere in the garden, the soil is warm and receptive and
the weather is often kinder too. Let’s get growing (again).

Vegetables to sow in August
Carrots – try growing short Chantenay,
or Nantes carrots that won’t take as long
to grow as longer roots. These can even
be grown in containers and that way
kept out of reach of pesky carrot flies.
Beetroot – grow some tasty ‘baby’
beets in around 12-14 weeks.
These are best lifted before the
end of the autumn, as they tend to
become woody in cold weather.
Dwarf beans – because these beans
don’t have to spend time climbing up
poles and sticks, they start flowering
and setting pods earlier than climbing
varieties. From an early August
sowing you could be harvesting green
(or purple) dwarf French beans by
the beginning of October. Don’t
leave sowing any later than this
though, as they are a tender crop
and may be hit by an early frost.
Peas – the quickest peas to grow
are the sugar-snaps and mangetout
varieties, as you are harvesting the
whole pod and not waiting for the
peas inside to swell and ripen.
Kale – this is probably one of
my ‘desert island’ vegetables; it
stands tall and impervious to
the winter weather, nutritious to
the end. Protect from pests.
Swiss chard – as beautiful as it is
good for you, chard is available in a
rainbow array of colours, although
a white one ‘Fordhook Giant’ may
be the best culinary variety.
Rocket – Reliable, quick (as its
name suggests) and tasty, rocket
will also self-seed around the
patch, so you may find you don’t
have to make repeat sowings…
Oriental greens – crops like pak choi,
mustard, kai lan (Chinese broccoli)
and napa cabbage are fast growing
and make fantastic additions to stir
fries and soup recipes. They may
need netting to protect from flea
beetle (which makes tiny holes in the
leaves), caterpillars and pigeons.
Salad leaves – loose leaved, ‘cut
and come again’ lettuce, herbs like
chervil, coriander and spicy mesclun
mixes of assorted leaves, all make
quick and tasty fresh salad that will
stay fresh (unlike the plastic bags of
leaves that turn to slime as soon as
you open them) for many weeks.

A
few years ago a group of us went
to have lunch at Gravetye Manor,
home to the Victorian gardener,
William Robinson. Robinson bought the
Elizabethan house and about 200 acres
in the mid-1880s and the estate, which
he extended, became his life’s work. We
have so much to thank him for as he
was at the forefront of the movement
rebelling against the high Victorian
style of gardening with its regimented
bedding in bright colours ‘highlighted’
with rather incongruous plantings of
exotics grown on in glasshouses. His style,
much followed, was for the more natural,
wilder approach to gardening, which
thankfully still prevails. Two of his books,
The Wild Garden and The English Flower
Garden became best sellers. His approach
to gardening developed in tandem with

of its more famous local exponents
was Daisy Lloyd at Great Dixter.
But back to lunch that
October at Gravetye...
I felt like a Jack in the Box with the
excitement of the autumn colours in
their fabulous borders and remember
that it was a beautiful day and the beds
really were brimming with so many rich
colour combinations. All late flowerers of
course: amongst them dahlias, aconites
and salvias. I can’t remember what
we ate but those plants and planting
combinations were just lovely.
Aconites really come into their own
from July onwards. One of the first to
flower is the silver-blue A. ‘Stainless
Steel’. I love this plant with its silver blue
hooded flowers. It’s great in July with
peachy day lilies. Another one which
starts into flower in July is A. ‘Spark’s
Variety’. This was introduced by the
famous Riverslea Nursery, founded by
Maurice Prichard who gave his name to
Campanula lactiflora ‘Prichard’s Variety’
and the pink Geranium riversleaianum
‘Russell Prichard’. I’m not sure why
this particular aconite was named

‘Spark’s Variety’. Anyway, this plant has
a long flowering period and deep purple
hooded flowers. Like most monkshoods,
it can be grown in both sun or partial
shade provided it is provided with a
good fertile soil, which is really the same
for all aconites. Give the plants a good
mulch in the spring to retain moisture.
To continue the late flowering season
with these plants, try A. carmichaelii
‘Arendsii’ which goes through August
and into September. This is a tall plant
with enormous blue flowers and totally
self-supporting, upright stems. You’ll
need a bit of space for this but there are
shorter forms worth trying. Aconites look
marvellous grown with late season grasses.
And then there are the Agastache,
brilliant for flowering late and for
extending the flowering season in your
borders from July right through to
October. These are perennial plants with
so many plus points; from the aromatic
foliage through to the way that they
attract bees and hoverflies. They like a well
drained soil – good for a Mediterranean
planting in gravel garden perhaps. Two
worth mentioning are A. ‘Blue Fortune’
with dark bracts and violet blue flowers
and A. ‘Blackadder’ with spikes of furry
violet blue flower and dark calyxes.
I took a photo this morning of the buds
of a Japanese anemone. How pretty they
are. Perched on long stems are furry grey/
pink/white perfectly formed bobbles.
I read somewhere that they reminded
the writer of pearls and I think that is
such a good description. This particular
anemone is A. x hybrida ‘Honorine
Jobert’, with pure white flowers with a
distinctive green centre surrounded by
bright yellow stamens. Easy to grow and
easy to source. Growing with dark foliage
as a backdrop like Sambucus ‘Black Lace’
they light up the garden until October.
This is the way to see them at their
best. They spread like mad but are so
charming and make up for their manners!
Oh, another one that is rather
beautiful is the double pink, A. hupensis
var. japonica ‘Pamina’ which has rather
elegant grey black stems. Bees love
Japanese anemones so grow them!
I think it was quite late in the
season when we went to Malverleys in
Hampshire. What a garden. Particularly
memorable in their stunning white
garden were enormous quantities of
the self-seeding biennial sea holly,
Eryngium giganteum, commonly known
as Miss Willmott’s Ghost, named after
an incorrigible gardener who felt
Japanese anemones in bud

that all her friends’ gardens should be
blessed with the plant. She apparently
sowed seed wherever she visited.
Eryngiums are great late flowerers
and I love this one for its silver white
flower heads. There are lots to try.
Eryngium planum ‘Blaukappe’ as its
name suggests has lots of bright blue
flowers. Eryngium x oliverianum has blue
flower and amethyst stems. They take a
while to establish and colour up but are
worth the wait. For a bit of drama try
E. pandanifolium ‘Physic Purple’ from
the Chelsea Physic Garden. Tall, very
tall, its tiny purple heads are magnets
for all manner of pollinating insects.
And late flowering shrubs? Buddleja of
course are brilliant for late flowering
colour and for providing food for
butterflies. There are so many new
cultivars but I love B. davidii ‘Dartmoor’
which has fan shaped multiple spikes
of purple blossom. It is highly scented
and butterflies really do besiege it.
Bupleurum fruticosum is a shrubby late
flowering evergreen with masses of green
umbellifer flower heads. It is lovely for

cutting. It doesn’t seem to mind having
a good hair cut in the spring to control
its size. It just comes back better and
even more floriferous. Grow it with tall
Salvia confertiflora or Salvia involucrata.
Both are smashing late flowering plants
but the latter is hardy so perhaps easier.
You really do have to remember to bring
in S. confertiflora but you are rewarded
for your diligence the following year.
I almost forgot to mention the shrubby
salvias with their incredibly long flowering
period. Visit William Dyson’s salvia
nursery in the gardens of Great Comp,
near Sevenoaks, to see his amazing, ever
increasing, collection of salvias. He has
been growing salvias in Kent for over 20
years. I particularly like S. ‘Royal Bumble’
with its combination of dark stems and
rich scarlet flowers. It’s in a pot at the
moment and probably would benefit from
being planted out, but the stems break off
easily and it may not be the moment now.

How can i help my children/grandchildren
get on the property ladder?
The most simple way to help is to gift or loan a lump sum.
The first step is to be clear whether you are gifting or lending
the money. If you are gifting it’s important to remember that
you will no longer have any call on the funds if you want
them back in the future. If lending the money you should
put it in writing so that everyone is clear when and how
the money will be repaid and what would happen if either
party died. The document should also set out if the money
is repayable on demand or over an agreed timescale. If you’re
charging interest, this will also need to be declared to HMRC.
Gifting money to your relatives can help reduce any future
Inheritance Tax liability, whereas any outstanding loans will
continue to be included in your estate.
is it best to buy in my name, or
gift them a sum of money?
There is no right answer, it will
depend on your circumstances. The
advantage of buying the property
in your own name is that you
retain control. However, there
are a number of disadvantages.
Buying a second property means
paying an additional 3% on
top of normal stamp duty rates,
(for example, buying a second property for £200,000
would result in a bill of £7,500, whereas a first-time buyer
buying the same property wouldn’t pay any stamp duty.

will be part of your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes.
What are the potential repercussions of buying for a relative?
If you buy a house which you then gift to a relative,
you will no longer have any rights in relation to that
property or any call on the funds used to purchase it.
If you want to retain an interest in the property or the
funds used to buy it, it’s important to take legal advice.
Can I sign my current property over to a relative
and what are the pros and cons of doing this?
This is a common question when people are considering
inheritance tax or the potential cost of residential care.
Apart from the obvious risks of giving away your home,
such as those you give it to getting divorced or becoming
bankrupt, there are a number of other issues to consider.
To be effective for IHT you would need to survive for
seven years after gifting and pay the new owners a market
rent to continue living in the property. When assessing
the level of support for residential care, local authorities
can look at past gifts and take a view on whether the
person requiring funding ‘deliberately deprived themselves
of capital’ in order to get a higher level of support.
There is also the risk that should you wish to
downsize in the future and the new owner agrees
to sell, they will be subject to Capital Gains Tax on
any rise in the value since the time of the gift.
Can I buy a property to rent out to a family member?
You can rent a property to family members. If you choose
to rent at below market value to a ‘Connected person’
such as a child or grandchild this will restrict the expenses
you are able to offset against your income tax liability.
Provided a rent is charged you can normally deduct
the expenses up to the level of rent received, any excess
expenses can’t be carried forward to use in a later year.

Our children need to explore and have fun, it’s a key part of
their development, as Hilary Wilce explains...
For all of us, summer is a time of play. Children play
in the long days free from school. Adults play on
the beach, or round the barbecue, or at outdoor
festivals – the year I went to Glastonbury, my first thought
was that this was a vast, colourful playground where
170,000 people were dancing, singing, dressing-up and
pretending just like the children they had all once been.
Play is great. It helps us to develop communication skills.
It aids problem-solving, underpins cognitive
development and feeds the imagination.
But not all of us remember to honour it all
the time. Some of us think that work and
chores are the stuff of adult life, and that
for children the most important thing is
to get top test scores and exam results.
Yet play sits dead-centre of who we
are as human beings. It helps us to relax
and learn, socialise, grow and develop.
Without it, we are poor, stunted, joyless
things who barely deserve the life we’ve been given.
So it goes without saying that play should always
be an important part of school learning. Most of us
understand that little children need to pour water and
dig sand in order to better understand the world and
their place in it. But what about later on? Think back
to your own learning and it’s almost certain that your
most vivid memories will relate to times when you were

encouraged to do things for yourself and find things out.
If you can’t access any such memories, you must have had
very dull schooldays, but imagine being nine and taken out
into the playground to act out a scale model of the solar
system? Are you ever going to forget being Neptune, at the
far edge of the cluster of planets we call home? Or being 13
and being asked, in a geography lesson, to use sand trays and
water flows to create your own sand dunes and meanders?
Play encourages interest and motivation.
Learning times tables is hard and boring,
but made much more fun when the ‘times
table Macerana’ is used to encourage
counting in twos, fives and 10s.
We are never too old to learn through
play. At the introductory session to an MBA
programme, run by a leading UK business
school, participants were asked to run to one
corner of the room or another, depending on
whether they preferred talking on the phone
or by email. The resulting clusters showed how few people
were genuine extroverts, and how many were naturally more
shy and unconfident. I’m not sure that life’s that simple,
but I’ve never forgotten that visual picture of the prevalence
of human uncertainty underneath our brave facades.
Playing is essential to our co-operative human nature.
We can do it in a million ways – through singing, drama,
sport, painting, cooking – and it will feed and enrich us.

The Old Gaol Studio
The working studio of landscape painter, Karl Terry and his ceramicist
wife, Joanna. The studio is used to create larger paintings based on Karl’s
‘en-plein air’ oil sketches from the local landscape and his wider travels.
Joanna Terry, BA (Hons), uses the studio to create her delicate cast
porcelain vessels. Walking daily, noting the subtle changes in the
seasons. The interplay of light draws her eye to the often overlooked
fragments of nature.
The studio will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am - 2pm,
during August. Please do come and look in.

Jane tackles the challenge of
a wildflower meadow
The wild flower meadow has not only been looking
wonderful all summer but more than ever before it’s
been buzzing with bees, and birds and butterflies have all
taken advantage of the many different flowers and seeds on offer.
We made the meadow five years ago. It was a huge
project that involved turning back the clock and accepting
it would be less productive in terms of the amount of
grass it produced, but it has been worth every penny.
I don’t imagine you ever give it a second thought but the
fact is almost all the fields of grass you see round and about,
will in recent history have been ‘improved’. Over 97% of

have supported about 50 different species

grass, a fast growing, tough thug that
doesn’t let any others get a look in. This
kind of intensive grass production while
supporting more sheep and cattle leaves
little room for plant diversity or wildlife.
New wild flower meadows are called ‘semiimproved’
and it’s much harder to make one
than you might imagine. To get rid of the rye
grass we had to spray it off in the autumn
not one, not two but three times and then as though making
turf, a machine was brought in to slice and remove the top few
inches of rooty soil. This created a house size pile which we put
in the woods much to the delight of the pigs who thought we’d
built them their very own piggy Alton Towers. It was then left to
overwinter as a sad, bald patch of land. In February, seed from
a host of different species of clay-loving wild flowers and grasses
were sown and ever since it has been an annual riot of colour.
But it’s gang warfare out there and to prevent the bad
boy grasses, thistles and docks, from moving back in we
have to make every effort to keep the soil fertility low. And
one of the key heroes in this ongoing battle is yellow rattle,
a semi-parasitic annual plant that attaches
to the roots of the vigorous species and
takes nutrients, thus preventing them outcompeting
the gentler wildflower species.
Often known as the meadow maker it’s such
an important plant that it has a whole line-up
of regional names, including pots and pans, hen
pennies, tiddlibottles and shacklecaps. And while
on the subject of monikers there may be many
ways I didn’t get 10 out of 10 for my parenting
skills – no piano lessons, too busy to take them
to museums or make things with egg boxes and
sticky-back plastic – but I did teach my girls the
names of all the wild flowers they came across. And even if it
won’t feature on their CVs I remain immensely satisfied, maybe
if I’m honest a touch smug, that they can tell Jack in the Hedge
from Herb Robert and Ladies Bedstraw from Yellow Archangel.
Another way to keep the fertility down is to cut the meadow
every year for hay. In the other fields on the farm we cut hay
in late June and later spread muck taken from the cow sheds
the winter before. But the meadow gets left till late summer,
usually the end of August when all the seeds have dropped and
having been mown it gets not so much as a sniff of manure.
Talking of aromas it also produces the most delicious
smelling hay, a heady mixture of vaguely medicinal
Meadowsweet, mingling with the soporific scent of Ladies
Bedstraw (which was why it was used to stuff mattresses)
and the slightly vanilla scented sweet vernal grass.
And it’s not just the smell, evidently if you’re a cow
or sheep you really can taste the difference. Open a bale
of that on a cold wet February morning in the sheep
shed and it’s a race to get there first. Cue music and sexy
voice, “It’s not just any hay, it’s late-cut meadow hay”.
