VLP POOL rules
The VLP pool is open Tuesdays-Sundays, 5 AM-10 PM year round for your
enjoyment. It is CLOSED on Monday for chemical applications. Please
consider the following pool rules, while using the Pool:
• Pool parties are not allowed at the pool. • Private swim lessons are not
allowed at the community pool due to vendor and insurance compliance.
• Keep the pool area and bathrooms clean. • The life rings are not to be
used as toys. In case of any eventuality at the pool, they are critical for
safety and rescue operation. • If brought down to the pool deck, please
return the patio chairs to the covered patio. • In addition, to these, a

VLP Safety Tips:
Do Not Open The Door For Solicitors
Officer Glentzer shares the following valuable information regarding
safety: • DO NOT OPEN your DOOR for solicitors. As a community we
should not encourage them by opening our doors. If a solicitor refuses to
get off your property, please call 911 immediately to report them.
• Promply collect your packages when they are delivered, as thieves are
more than ready to take parcels left on doorsteps.
• When shopping or stopping at the bank, be aware of your surroundings
and ALWAYS lock your car.
Home safety tips: • Activate your alarm when leaving
• Lock all windows and doors before leaving
• Place a lock on your backyard gate so would be burglars do not have
access to your backyard • Check into updating and upgrading your alarm
system and installing glass break sensors and test system for accuracy
• Place alarm signs/stickers in visible places
• Make sure each of your vehicles has a VLP sticker displayed (stickers can
be obtained at monthly Board meetings)
• Remove all valuables and always lock vehicles
• Get to know your neighbors and become familiar with their vehicles -
notice cars that seem suspicious

INGREDIENTS:
2 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup milk
3/4 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened dark cocoa powder
1 ounce high-quality dark chocolate (85%), finely chopped
5 egg yolks
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, plus more for dusting
DIRECTIONS:
Whisk cream, milk, sugar and cocoa powder in a saucepan over
medium heat until the mixture is thoroughly combined and the sugar
has dissolved. Bring almost to a simmer and stir in dark chocolate
until melted. Whisk egg yolks into the cream mixture and cook until
batter is slightly thickened, 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a container,
cover and refrigerate until chilled, at least 6 hours.
Stir cinnamon into chilled custard batter and freeze in an ice cream
machine following manufacturer’s instructions. Sprinkle frozen
custard with more cinnamon to serve.

2 cups ginger ale, chilled
2 cups orange soda, chilled
1/2 cup milk
4 scoops orange sherbet
4 scoops vanilla ice cream
DIRECTIONS:
Stir ginger ale, orange soda and milk together in a pitcher.
Divide orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream equally between 4
glasses. Pour ginger ale mixture over ice cream into each glass.

For August
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.
• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves
and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of
iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates.
• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little
bone meal around the roots.
• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall
growth.
• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.
• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have
areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t
brought under control. There is a new generation going
now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban
to stop the damage.
• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine
grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a
fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing
while it puts down roots. You will need to water the
new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also
creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun
can dry the turf.
• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up,
add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for
a month or so. Add in any amendments like micronutrients.
Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms
have a favorable environment.

organization. We are a community based service organization for
women who are committed to providing charitable services and civic
improvement through non-profit organizations in the NW Harris County/

FUN RUN/WALK FOR HEROES
This Bridgeland Fun Run/Walk for Heroes will be held
October 19, 2018, at 8 AM at the Lakeland Village Festival
Park in Bridgeland in Cypress, TX.
Please register for the event at bit.ly/heroesfunrun2019.

and a 9 AM children’s 1K run thru the Bridgeland’s beautiful
parks & lakes along with booth & food vendors, a bouncy

female 5K runners. Medals will be awarded to all children

Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County’s Disaster Recovery Repair
Program is assisting homeowners in the Northwest Harris County area who
have experienced damage from a disaster since August of 2017.
“As we continue to work in our community, we have realized there are still so
many who have unmet needs. We are continuing to serve families across the
county who have been effected by the devastating disasters since August 2017.”

HOW PARENTS CAN PREPARE
FOR BACK TO SCHOOL TIME

Back to school time is always a big transition, not only for children but
for parents.
While children are filled with excitement and first-day jitters, parents are
filled with thoughts of “Am I prepared enough?” To help eliminate these
thoughts and help you and your child prepare for the new school year,
all you need is a little organization and forethought. Here are 10 back
to school tips to kick-start the new year and get you prepared for a fresh
start.
1. Get back into your sleep routine. To help eradicate those stressful
school mornings, set up a regular bedtime and morning time routine to
help prepare your child for school. Begin your usual school sleep routine
about a week or so before school starts.
2. Shop for school supplies together. To get your child excited about
starting a new grade, shop for supplies together. Allow them to pick out
their own backpack, lunchbox, etc. This is a great way to give them a little
bit of responsibility too!
3. Re-establish school routines. Have your child practice getting back
into the rhythm of their daily school routine. You can do this by having
them wake up at the same time every day and eat around the same time
they would at school. About a week or so before school starts, plan a
few outside activities where your child will have to leave and come home
around the same time they would if they were in school. This will help
them be rested and ready for the big day.
4. Set up a homework station. Sit down with your child and together
designate a time and place where he can do his homework each day. This
can be somewhere quiet like in the den or even in the kitchen while you
are preparing dinner. Make sure to choose a time where you are available
in case your child needs your help.
5. Prepare for the unexpected. Working parents know that it can be
difficult to find a sitter when your child is sick. Before school even begins,
it’s a good idea to have a sitter already lined up in case you get that phone
call home from the nurse saying your child is ill.
6. Make an after-school game plan. Make a plan for where your child will
go after school lets out for the day. Depending upon the age of your child,
figure out if they will go to a neighbor’s house, an afterschool program
or be allowed to stay home by themselves. This will help eliminate any
confusion during the first few weeks.
7. Turn off the TV and video games. For a lot of children summertime is
filled with endless video games and TV programs. Children are usually
in shock when they begin school and realize that six hours of their day
is going to spent learning and not playing games and watching TV. Ease
your child into the learning process by turning off the electrics and
encouraging them to read or play quietly.
8. Review school material and information. For most parents, schools
send home a packet with a ton of information regarding their child’s
new teacher, important dates to remember, emergency forms and
transportation routines. Make sure that you read through this information
carefully and mark down all important dates on your calendar.
9. Get organized. The best way to prepare for back to school time is to
be organized. With school comes a massive amount of paperwork,
which can consume your household. Designate a spot in your house
for homework, permission slips and any other school-related papers.
This can help eliminate all of that paper clutter and make your life less
stressful.
10. Get your child’s yearly checkup. School and germs go hand in hand,
so it’s best to get your child’s yearly checkup before school even starts.
Get any required vaccinations and ask your pediatrician the best ways
your child can stay healthy throughout the school year.
Through preparation and organization, you can ensure that your child
will have a smooth transition to the start of the new school year. By doing
so, you and your child can enjoy the rest of your summer break.
