REPORT
2018
MORE POWER TO YOU
LORRIE GRAHAM, COUNSELOR
I can only take a client so
far, then I reach out to our
other resources. We become
part of the same family,
and all sit around the same
table. I think of it as
Thanksgiving every day.
ERIC LONG, PROGRAM ANALYST
Many of us have gone through
the same struggles our clients
go through. Sometimes I share
my own story, and I always learn
something new from my clients. If
you’re not learning something new
every day you’re not living life.
PATTY HASSON,
PRESIDENT &
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
This work is hard and
ever more necessary.
The federal government
no longer sees a housing
crisis, nor a collegedebt
crisis, nor the need
to inform and protect
consumers. And as
fundraising becomes
a fulltime obsession,
we’ve learned to cultivate
and depend on strong,
powerful partnerships
to serve the people who
need us more than ever.
1+1=3
WHEN WE WORK TOGETHER
WE MORE THAN DOUBLE THE IMPACT.
SCOTT KAROL,
DEPUTY DIRECTOR
Adding new tools to
our toolbelt is powerful.
It allows us to build
bridges to serve new
populations in ways we
never could before.
LIZ GREENWOOD,
SENIOR COUNSELOR
When I started there was only five of us, and we had to
work together and find partnerships with other agencies.
As I end my journey with Clarifi, it’s exciting to have more
resources available to people than we could have ever
imagined back in 1974.
RENA WILLIAMS-TAYLOR,
MANAGER, CAREERLINK
Paychecks rarely stretch
as long as your dreams
and aspirations, so
you need to have a
foundation of financial
understanding. We
empower people with
knowledge. And when
you believe in people,
they believe in you.
KIM ROGERS, DIRECTOR
COMPASS FAMILY SELF SUFFICIENCY PROGRAM
We walk with you along the path to your goals.
We hold each other accountable, deliver professional
advice and personal encouragement. With our partners,
our own mission and our clients, it’s a win-win-win.
JILL ROBERTS, DIRECTOR
HEALTHY ROWHOUSE PROJECT
We’re in the business of
helping people say, “I can do
this.” We’re in this together to
help people build and pass
along intergenerational
assets, not liabilities.
MAUREEN KEOWN,
VICE PRESIDENT MARKETING &
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Our mission drives us to work
every day. But it’s the combined
passion of our people and our
clients that drives us to faster,
stronger, better outcomes.
TYLER YOUNG,
COUNSELOR
We work side by side
with Community Legal
Services in their offices.
I bring our expertise to
help their clients—all
at no charge. Keeping
both sides inspired is
everything!
MARNET STONE,
COUNSELOR
Together we bring a lot
of energy to our clients,
but not to overwhelm
them. We create a nojudgment
zone, a safe
space to move forward.
CHELSEA BARRISH, VICE PRESIDENT
OF PROGRAM IMPACT
I like to remind people they’re
not alone in whatever hardship
they’re experiencing. We’re
partners in people’s big dreams.
That’s a partnership and a
trust we have to earn every day.
DEBT
MANAGEMENT
PROGRAM
ERIC LONG, PROGRAM ANALYST
I’M BETTER AT HELPING OTHERS
BECAUSE I’VE BEEN THERE MYSELF.
Eric Long draws on real empathy in his client partnerships, especially with our Debt Management
Program. He knows the struggles and the sacrifices it takes to experience the joy of becoming
debt free. “I’ve been there,” says Eric. “And I let folks know that I’m available for them no matter what.
It’s not about making people feel small. It’s about helping them achieve big things.”
CALVIN FLORENCE
“HOW’S IT FEEL
TO BE CLEAR
OF MY CREDIT
CARDS? ARE YOU
KIDDING? I’M STILL
RIDING HIGH!”
Clarifi’s Debt Management
Plan gave Calvin Florence
the proven tools he needed
to pay down $30,000 and
retire debt-free. (That’s just a
chunk of the $5,198,298 paid
off by 900 Clarifi clients last
year.) Calvin is emphatic
about his partnership with his
counselor: “Eric was very,
very, very supportive.”
PHILADELPHIA WORKS
RENA WILLIAMS-TAYLOR, MANAGER, CAREERLINK
WITH CLARIFI INSIDE CAREERLINK, NEW PAYCHECKS
COME WITH NEW MONEY MANAGEMENT SKILLS.
When folks come to CareerLink for guidance on building skills and landing a job, they also learn
how to make the most of those new paychecks. Rena Williams-Taylor leads three Clarifi counselors
embedded in CareerLink offices, and their no-fee guidance is now included for participants in
CareerLink’s EARN program. We steer people through basic banking, better credit, first-time
homeownership, and through the healthcare insurance market. Seems like a lot? Rena says,
“I’m a goal setter. I love setting ‘em, and hitting ‘em!”
CRISTAL PEREZ
“I NEVER THOUGHT
I COULD CHANGE,
BUT I’VE COME
SO FAR. AND I
NEVER WALKED
ALONE.”
Cristal and her two sons—
she calls them her two
“heartbeats”— lived in a shelter
when she started working with
CareerLink. As part of her job
training she met Rena, from
Clarifi, and began a life of new
opportunities. “Aw man, Rena
is amazing,” says Cristal. Rena
is Cristal’s muse, pushing her
to build her credit score from
508 to 615, and putting her
new job-seeking skills to work.
Via Clarifi, Cristal jumped into
a student-loan forgiveness
program, erased $30,000 in
debt and opened her first bank
account. “There’s more to life
than I dreamed,” says Cristal.
“Now my eyes are open to it.”
KIM ROGERS, DIRECTOR COMPASS FAMILY SELF SUFFICIENCY PROGRAM
MARNET STONE, COUNSELOR
WITH COMPASS WORKING CAPITAL WE OVERCOME
FAMILY POVERTY BY BUILDING FAMILY ASSETS.
Clarifi and Compass Working Capital go together like striving families and secure homes. It’s a
perfect match. Kim Rogers manages our partnership with Compass to administer their unique
Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) model. This program allows people living in subsidized housing
to increase their income without penalizing them with an increast in rent. Instead, the difference
between their new and old rent rate goes into an escrow account to build savings, fund education
and purchase their own home. Kim says she was elated to bring this program to Philly. “Hope comes
from a clear path toward your goals,” Kim says. “FSS puts you on that path and we walk with you. It’s
not just professional advice, it’s personal encouragement.”
HALIMA CASLEY
“CONSTANT
ENCOURAGEMENT:
YEAH, WE CAN
DO THIS! IT
SOUNDS CORNY,
BUT I THRIVE
OFF THAT.”
Halima Casley has a culinary
degree, and she’s going for a
human services degree. She
needs both to be a public
health inspector in restaurants.
“People shouldn’t eat what
comes out of nasty kitchens,”
Halima declares. Her FSS
escrow savings will help make
her quirky dream job happen.
“I crunch numbers with my
Clarifi counselor Marnet Stone
every month,” Halima says.
“I’m not at the mountaintop,
but we get to a new level every
time. Our eyes are on the prize.”
Marnet agrees: “Halima is one
of my all-stars!”
JILL ROBERTS, DIRECTOR, HEALTHY ROWHOUSE PROJECT
THIS LOAN LEADS TO “I CAN DO THIS.”
Jill Roberts believes that bricks-and-mortar plus human capital equals stronger neighborhoods.
She helps folks fix up their fixer-uppers, build intergenerational wealth and turn potential liabilities
into family assets. Jill runs Clarifi’s Healthy Rowhouse Project, and in tandem with the Philadelphia
Redevelopment Authority (PRA) and two financial institutions, is offering low-interest loans
available to homeowners who want to repair, restore and renew their city homes. “If it’s affordable
and you’re in it, and you can fix it and keep it up, it’s the best place you can be,” says Jill. “We love
the beautiful buildings in this city, and we love empowering the people who live in them.”
“WE ARE AS
RESILIENT AS
OUR HOUSING,
AND OUR
HOUSING STOCK
IS RESILIENT. ”
We’ve added an empowerment
tool to our kit: Restore, Repair
Renew, a partnership between
the City of Philadelphia, PRA
and two pioneering financial
institutions (Univest and
Finanta). For folks who’ve been
denied loans before, or for
those who have delayed much
needed home repairs, this is
an opportunity to make things
right. Now leaky, creaky and
drafty houses can be restored
with a low-interest, 10-year
loan for people with even
a modicum of good credit.
Clarifi counselors guide folks
through the process including
how to select the right
contractor for the right job.
