To be a Blue Ribbon nominee, a school’s test scores must place them in the top 15 percent nationally on standardized tests. School begins each day with Principal Kristen Fink personally welcoming each student by name into the building. Studies show that when students are greeted, or “seen” by multiple people at the start of their school day, engagement in school increases, test scores go up and students feel valued. Throughout this past year, Fink has had the opportunity to visit some high-performing schools through her participation as a fellow in the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Transformational Educational Leadership (CTEL). She learned that the power of gathering the entire learning community first thing in the morning is striking. Therefore, rather than starting each day by going to individual homerooms, students will come together as a school in the gym to pray, build community, learn from each other and celebrate success. Each day of the week will have a different theme. Morning Assembly will provide Sacred Heart with the opportunity to live out its root beliefs and grow together as a faith community. To accommodate Morning Assembly and to avoid losing any valuable instructional time, the school day has been lengthened by ten minutes. Sacred Heart students thrive under a faculty committed to continuous improvement through ongoing professional development. More than 70 percent of teachers have masters degrees. They collaborate across grade levels and subject areas to provide a rigorous curriculum. The highly specialized Student Services Department — with specialists in math, reading, and speech as well as a counselor — supports teachers and learners, differentiating to ensure each child’s needs are met. Since 2009, Sacred Heart has been an Apple Distinguished School for successful integration of technology. The STEAM lab offers opportunities to explore and innovate with circuitry, coding, robotics and software engineering, all while collaborating with peers. Student life extends far beyond school hours with after-school care and a teacher-supervised Homework Lab as well as arts, sciences and athletic offerings. A highly engaged drama troupe, band, choir, enrichment classes and no-cut competitive team sports keep students engaged and filled with school spirit. Five years ago, Sacred Heart introduced its first three-year-old preschool class. Today, Sacred Heart School has two preschool classes and there are three junior kindergarten classes slated for fall, including one full-day program.
