Dear Readers,
Welcome to our Back to School edition! We hope you had a fantastic
summer break and have been enjoying the warm weather, and now feel
ready to start a new school year. We also want to give a warm welcome
to all of our new readers who have little ones just starting their first year
of school! It’s such an exciting time full of new experiences for them and
you, and we hope these first few weeks go just as well as you hope. For our
regular readers, we hope this new school year brings positive change and
lots of opportunities for fun with your family.
Make sure to check out our What’s On Where pages for a huge array of
family and child-friendly events and activities on in your local area. We’ve
got everything from water sport activities at Pinkston Water Centre to kids
events at the Tall Ship. We always make sure to include lots of activities that
are free or low cost too so you can fill your schedule without worry! Don’t
forget to browse our Box Office pages for local theatre shows suitable for
your budding theatre-goers. When you find an activity you’d like to take part
in, remember to check the venue’s website to make sure you’re getting the
most up to date information (sometimes details are subject to change!) and
book in advance when necessary.
With our best wishes,
All paths lead to
Strathclyde Park
A new map showing 13 walking and cycling routes to and
from Strathclyde Country Park has been launched which
gives directions, distances, historical points and places of
interest - all of which lead to the park.
The walks start from locations across Lanarkshire, including
Hamilton, Bellshill, Chatelherault, North Motherwell,
Barons Haugh, Uddingston and East Kilbride.
A mobile phone app is also available on Apple and Google
play stores. Just search for WALKCYCLE4AIR or walking
cycling Lanarkshire.
Copies of the map are available from the Watersports
Centre at Strathclyde Park, libraries and council buildings.
The project was funded by the Scottish Government air
quality grant aimed at encouraging people to walk and
cycle more instead of driving.
A new woodland play park is taking shape
at Palacerigg Country Park, Cumbernauld.
Two seven metre high towers connected by rope bridges with a vertical rope climbing tunnel,
pendulum swing seats and enclosed five metre tube slide are at the centre of the play park.
In the surrounding woods there will be more play equipment, including balance beams, wobble
bridges and low level climbing features along with seating and picnic benches.
The project will be funded from money received by the council though the dissolution of Campsies
Centre (Cumbernauld) Ltd and developed by the council, as part of our plans for the park.
A number of consultation events have been held recently with local people and park visitors, and
the council will now take forward a plan for further improving the park for the future.
The new play park is expected to open to the public in August.
Glasgow Doors Open
Days Festival
In 1990, Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival was part of
the first-ever Doors Open Days in Europe. 41 buildings
opening their doors and welcomed in the public as part
of the European Heritage Days programme.
Since then the festival has opened over 500 buildings
across Glasgow and has grown to include a varied
programme of events and guided walks celebrating the
city’s buildings, its people and their stories.
This year from 16th-22nd September, we invite you into
a record 122 buildings. Get up close and personal with
the city’s iconic architecture, inspect working factories,
join the congregation one of many places of worship
and get involved with thriving community projects. Pick
up our dedicated children’s programme from your local
library now!
The Tall Ship at Riverside
The Tall Ship boasts an exciting schools programme, offering a
variety of engaging activities catering for Nursery, Primary and/or
Secondary Schools. These include guided tours, self-led visits and a
range of workshops. The workshop themes are as follows: World
War One, the Titanic, pirates, Morse code, mermaids and sea
creatures, and life at sea.
The Tall Ship is also great for planned and spontaneous out of school
visits. Our out of school programme includes but is not limited to:
Kip on the Ship events, treasure hunts, drop-in crafts,
guided tours and self-led visits.
It’s time to
PARTY!
Primary Times’ extensive guide on how to host your
child’s perfect birthday party, without breaking the bank
As the madness of the
summer holidays has
worn off and the kids
are back at school, September is
the perfect time to begin thinking
about your child’s perfect birthday
party. Primary Times has compiled
an extensive guide on how to host
your child’s ultimate birthday bash,
whilst remaining under budget
and stress free throughout the
whole process.
To begin, tell your child it’s time
to start planning the big day. No
doubt you will be met with tons of
ideas and it’s your job to steer them
in a way that is both realistic and
affordable, but also plenty of
fun for all.
The first step to party planning is
to choose the venue for where this
party will be held. If you’re happy
inviting all your children’s friends
into your home, then this will be
a great money-saver. For some of
us however, this isn’t an option.
In this case, try shopping around
to find what works best for you
and your little one. Appropriate
venues can include a whole
multitude of options, from
your local village hall, to soft
play centres, swimming
pools, cinemas, sports
pitches, or restaurants. Ask
these individual venues
whether they have any
package deals available for
children’s party hire.
With costs in mind, when booking a
venue consider partnering up with
another school parent to host a joint
birthday party for your children.
This will allow for just as much fun,
whilst cutting the costs down by
half. Guest list numbers will greatly
depend on the venue you choose,
but with another parent on board,
it will allow you to be a bit more
flexible with your pennies.
Once all of this is decided, you can
begin to think about the fun details
of the day. The food, for example,
can be a great way for your child to
get involved in the party planning. If
your party is self-catered, consider
the different foods you will lay
out for your guests. You can’t go
wrong with rustling up a selection
of sandwiches, mini pizzas, veggies
with dips or cocktail sausages.
If you’re looking for a theme, an
International themed menu is
a great way of encouraging the
children to try different foods from
around the world, whilst having fun
at the same time. Indian samosas,
Mexican nachos, Chinese spring
rolls and American hotdogs
are some of our favourite
dishes of the day.
As for games, there are a whole
host of different options that
will keep the children happy and
keep your costs low. Some of our
favourites include the old classics
of pass the parcel, musical chairs,
and pin the tail on the donkey.
Alternatively, for a more modern
party game, a piñata is becoming
an increasing favourite amongst
children. They are available at
most major UK supermarkets, and
are sure to keep the kids laughing
for ages as they eagerly try and
retrieve the treats inside.
Finally, before children leave a
birthday party, they are usually
expected to take a party bag
home with them. Rather than the
classic cellophane bag filled
with sweeties, balloons, and
pencils, there are several
alternatives which will keep
your party guests smiling,
without costing a fortune.
Some of our favourites
include a small children’s
story book, a packet of seeds
for children to grow their own
vegetables, or some home-baked
treats wrapped up with a bow.
Inspire their thirst for knowledge with…
Konnie Huq
Primary Times teams up with Konnie Huq to ignite a passion for STEM subjects in our children and to take
inspiration from Cookie, the inquisitive hero of her new series of science-rich children’s story books
Konnie, we aim to get the
nation’s children inspired
by maths and science, why
is it important for primary
school aged children to
take an interest?
If children are enthused by something at
primary age and it strikes a chord with them,
they will take it through with them for life.
Primary years are when we shape and form
and become the blueprint for who we
will be as adults. It is a crucial time. By the
time we are adults we have by and large
already formed preferences, passions
and our core values.
Is Cookie a character that
children will be inspired by
and try to emulate?
I hope so. She’s got a thirst for knowledge
and I think that’s really important – wanting
to find out more, and thinking it’s cool to be
clever is good.
Why did you write story
books with science themes?
We have a dearth in the UK of people going
into the STEM professions, girls in particular
but boys as well. And it just struck me that
my parents, when they came over from
Bangladesh in the 1960s, came here to
give us a good education, and where they
came from the revered professions were
STEM – they wanted me to be a doctor or an
engineer or an accountant. Over here it’s the
other way around, with a focus on the media
and being famous. But that’s only to do with
cultural perceptions of what’s cool and what’s
not, so I wanted to make a book where
everything is a bit flipped.
Tell us more…
In the book there’s a character who’s into
fashion and there’s a television presenter,
but they aren’t necessarily the cool ones. I
wanted to flip-reverse traditional thinking in
the book. So, science is cool, hopefully in
this book, and knowledge is cool. There’s
a perception of education as geeky but
actually surely knowledge is amazing.
Did you study STEM subjects?
Yes, I have science A levels. I always liked
maths and science, and I always liked the
arts as well. Often people think the two are
mutually exclusive and I don’t think they
are – even less so in society today. Anything
you think of, for example, the smart phone
you might be using today, is designed so
stylishly, from its interface to the art used
for the icons.
You can do jobs that intricately bind up arts
and sciences, and tech is very different from
what it was before because we are in such
a progressive society. Without sciences we’d
still be cavemen. We wouldn’t have houses,
cars, phones, all of that is to do with science
and maths, and being able to build and
invent things.
How can we help children
stay true to their passions
for STEM if they feel a
little bit nerdy about it?
Nerdy is cool! The more people that
embrace that ethos, the better! People
are too hung up on ’cool’ which by its
very definition is naff!!!
And alternatively, can you
help parents who struggle
to enthuse their children
about maths and science?
This can be done by relating science
to everyday life. Just like Cookie says,
without science we would have none of the
progress in our society that we have to today.
For example, when you realise that it’s thanks
to maths that you know how much water
can run through a pipe, at what rate, or how
much electricity can flow through a wire
without blowing things up. Without having
maths to work all of these things our cars
wouldn’t drive and planes wouldn’t stay in
the sky – because it’s all to do with balancing
equations and forces.
Who are your science heroes?
Ada Lovelace. An amazing woman, ahead of
her time who worked with Charles Babbage
on the first ever computer, which he believed
would only ever be a number crunching
machine. Ada had the foresight to see the
potential beyond this, to see computers
would be able to make music, pictures and
have so many other applications; the basis
of modern-day computing. She was way
ahead of her time!
Annoying
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. You don’t have to possess
super powers to help others, as these stories show. If you want to
put this to the test, there is a book that shows you how you can be
a hero and help save the world from the awful threat of plastic,
and it doesn’t take long.
Duck and Penguin are NOT Friends
Julia Woolf (Anderson Hb, £12.99)
Betty and Maud are best friends. They think their favourite toys,
Duck and Penguin, are best friends as well , but they really
aren’t, as you can tell by the expressive pictures. When the girls
think the toys are playing they are actually fighting. Perhaps
a game of itty-bitty babies could be a step too far and unite
them. Find out in this very funny, cute picture book. With just a sentence or two on each
age it is perfect for beginner readers.
Belinda Brown
David McKee (Anderson , £6.99)
Belinda loves
bananas,
in fact they
are all she
will eat, no
matter what
time of day,
even though
they have spoilt a friendship.
Having read they were healthy, her
father doesn’t care, but Belinda’s
eating habit worries Grandma.
She fears eating so many bananas
would give Belinda a banana
shaped body. This worried her as
well, so you would think it would
make her stop — or could she
come up with a different solution?
Find out in this really funny picture
book with detailed illustrations
providing lots to discuss. The story
is told in rhyme which will help
reluctant or struggling readers.
Evie and the Animals
Matt Haig (Canongate Hb,
£12.99)
Evie loves
animals, which
is just as well
as she can hear
what they are
thinking and
communicate
with them,
mind to mind.
This special skill
runs in her family, but her father
was insistent she kept it a secret.
This she tries to do until loads
of animals go missing and she
realises they are in a life or death
situation which only her skills can
help. It is only when these skills
become almost public knowledge
she realises she is in terrible
danger and why her father wanted
them kept secret. This is a thoughtprovoking,
exciting adventure story
with breathtaking moments. Fair
size print, medium length novel.
Debbie
The Day I Found a Wormhole
at the Bottom of the Garden S
Tom Mclaughlin (Walker, £6.99)
Billy was so keen to discover
treasure he was willing to
brave the dark, scary end of his
garden to search with his metal
detector. Imagine his delight
when it unearthed a crown. Less
delightful was the head attached
to it — thankfully attached to a
body, but one belonging to a very unamused
Queen Victoria. The arrival of Roman soldiers
and other historical characters confirms Billy’s
suspicions – he has somehow unearthed a
wormhole bringing people from the past. How
can he resolve the situation? No one can help as
no one knows wormholes really exist. It would
take a genius to sort this out - but what are the
chances of one coming along? It’s all a bit timey
wimey, and time is of the essence if a disaster is
to be avoided. This is an hilarious, laugh out loud
story, you don’t know what madcap plot twist
is coming along next. Fair size print and some
pictures encourage newly developing readers.
Kids Fight Plastic
Martin Dorey (Walker, £7.99)
If you have 2 minutes to spare you
can become a superhero with the
help of this informative book. You
don’t need special skills, you aren’t
expected to do anything super
human, but by doing simple, everyday actions you
can help save the planet. This book will show you
how. After explaining why plastic is so dangerous, it is
divided into 2 minute missions. They get you to fight
plastic in your bin, the park, supermarket, wardrobe
and other places — 13 missions in all. Earn points by
completing the missions and add them up to discover
what kind of superhero you are. You can get family
and friends involved as well. Good fun for you and
good for the environment.
My Babysitter is a Robot
Dave Cousins (Stripes, £5.99)
All their friends are really jealous to hear twins Jake and
Jess are getting a robot as a babysitter - how cool is that?
Perhaps less than you might think. It’s been made by
their grandmother, an inventor who believes in recycling.
This explains the rather unusual looking robot that met
them from school wearing grandma’s old coat, dad’s
football hat and Barbie roller skates. How to go from
cool to embarrassed in one stroke! It would be nice to say after the initial
shock things improved, but Robin, as he was called, had been programmed
to make sure the twins went for walks; did their homework before anything
else and had limited game time. His internet connection gives him unlimited
factual knowledge, but doesn’t help him understand emotions, and mayhem
ensues. After initially being desperate to get rid of him, the twins are starting
to get used to him when everything goes horribly wrong. When he is taken
away they realise how much they miss him and hate what has become of
him - can they do anything about it? This hilarious story with an endearing
robot is the first in a new series that will have you crying with laughter. Fair
size print encourages readers onto medium length novels.
What’s That in Dog Years?
Ben Davis (Oxford, £6.99)
Since the day he was born, George
has always had a friend in Gizmo.
In fact with the break up of his
parent’s marriage and his close school friend joining
the gang of bullies who torment him, Gizmo has
become his best and closest friend, the only one he
can really rely on. But while at 14 he is only a year
older than George, in dog years that makes him quite old, and
George has to come to terms with the fact he won’t have his friend
around for ever. Rather than dwell on this, George makes a bucket
list for Gizmo determined he will get to do everything on it. Some
things are easier to achieve than others and he finds help from an
unexpected source. She helps George learn more about his own
strengths and value while striving to complete the list. The story
is intertwined with chapters from Gizmo’s autobiography telling
things from his point of view while filling us in on events shared
from George’s past. This is a very poignant, totally absorbing story
cleverly mixing happy moments with the sad ones making them
bearable. It has an uplifting ending, but I would recommend keeping
a tissue, or several, to hand when reading it! Fair size print, full
length novel.
Desperate to find out what has happened to her father
who has been missing from his raiding party for more
than a year, Alva stows away on board a ship going to
England with her tame wolf, to search for him. She is
greeted with shock and anger when she reveals herself,
especially by her uncle who was on board, but as she
had anticipated it was too late to turn back. Her uncle
forgives her and they finally land at Jorvik which was under the control of a
fierce exiled Viking. Here they learn Alva’s father has left to join the Anglo
Saxon Queen of Mercia. Following his lead, they too escape going on a
perilous journey with a message for the Queen. Once there they discover
plots and mysteries to be solved, not least of all what mission Alva’s father
is on and where he is. A murder puts them in great danger, can they prove
their innocence? Does Alva have enough strength and courage to continue
her search? The answers are in this absorbing story that envelops you in
the atmosphere of the age. Full length novel interspersed with double
page dramatic illustrations which add to the story.
Being in disgrace after an incident in a dance competition, which despite not being her fault resulted in
her leaving the school, Milly thought her dancing days were over, but more worrying was her mother’s
disappearance soon after. She was thrilled and shocked to be invited to join the Swan House School of
Ballet, wondering if her mother had set it up. The shocks didn’t stop there as she learned it was a school
for spies as well as ballet and there was a connection to her mother. Willow, the girl who had caused
her trouble before, was also there holding a grudge and determined to continue making her life a
misery. More shocks when it is announced the school will be holding and competing in an important
ballet prize with Milly as lead dancer. Knowing she isn’t the best dancer, Milly finds this confusing
but is determined to do well when she is told it could help to find her mother. The school is full of
conspirators and a mole with plenty of suspects. Milly’s life is threatened, and she isn’t the only one in danger. This is an
exciting first story in a new series unusually combing jetes and fouttes with holographic mentors, flying tutus and many
other amazing gadgets. There are some heart stopping moments and enough plot twists to make you dizzier than a badly
performed pirouette. Fair size print, full length novel.
Launching the
love of reading
From Reception class to a lifetime of stories, we team up with the BookTrust
on the importance of reading at home… and we creep inside ‘The Cave’
Tips for reading
at home with them:
Set aside some time
Use funny voices
Find a quiet spot without
screens
Let them choose the book
Point to the pictures
Research shows that reading frequency
and enjoyment often drops as children
get older and regular story-time at home
stops. Without the support of shared family
reading, kids’ interest can easily decline and
starting school can be a key time for this to
happen – particularly when books begin to
be associated with the challenging task of
learning to read.
Practical tips for encouraging reluctant
readers and how to make reading at home
a happy habit include creating a reading
corner (if you have the space) and a reading
hour, and campaigns like ‘Time to read’
offer additional ideas. Parents and carers
are encouraged to keep making that allimportant
time to read with their children in
order to keep their love of stories alive now,
and as they get older. As we all know, this can
sometimes be a struggle when screens and
toys are competing for our children’s attention.
As we go back to school, the BookTrust takes
on a huge challenge to help children and
parents everywhere read more at home – it
distributes a book to every single reception
age pupil, which is around 700,000 children!
Local authorities receive the books and share
them with Reception classes and Reception
aged children who are home schooled.
“Each year we distribute around 3.4 million
books to children and families. But it’s not
just about reaching children with books –
it’s about engaging families and children
in reading; reminding them why it matters
and encouraging them to find the time
for reading for pleasure because it makes
such a difference to children’s lives and
development,” the BookTrust told us.
What could be a more joyful way of
kickstarting a child’s reading journey than
receiving a free book in the first few days at
school? Feedback from parents and schools
has flooded in since the free books were
first handed out four years ago; proving that
receiving a physical book makes a difference
to a child’s reading journey.
“The feedback from teachers and families is
incredible. Every year, parents get in touch to
tell us how much their children loved the story
and how excited they were to talk about it.
“One parent even told us that her son loved
his Time to Read copy of The Bumblebear so
much that all he wanted to speak about for
months afterwards was bees!”
Sometimes the Time to Read book is the
first a child has ever owned and teachers
often recount how proud their pupils were
to receive their very own book, something
special just for them.
Maybe your Reception aged child
has their copy? We hope you enjoy
reading it together and sharing it with
any older siblings.
The Cave is a
clever and fun
book. It has a
clear storyline
which keeps
the reader
guessing until
the end and
has lots of
detail in the
pictures, so
it’s one that
will be read
time and
time again.
