COURSES<br />
10-Day Mental Healthcare Course<br />
The Body, Mind and Life Department of Men-Tsee-<br />
Khang (Sowa-Rigpa) organized a 10-Day Course on<br />
Mental Health Care from 11-21 <strong>June</strong> 2019. The theme<br />
of the course: “Mental Hygiene” was discussed from<br />
the tri-fold perspectives of Buddhist Psychology, Tibetan<br />
Medicine and Tibetan Astro-Science. Each day consisted<br />
of a lecture, question & answer and practice sessions.<br />
The course was attended by a total of 9 participants from<br />
England, USA, Ukraine, and Singapore. Two Tibetans also<br />
attended this year. An educational tour was arranged<br />
for the participants to visit Men-Tsee-Khang Museum,<br />
Pharmacy Unit and Quality Control Department.<br />
Ladakh<br />
Men-Tsee-Khang Culture Centre, Ladakh gave short<br />
courses to five participants from Italy and India on 21<br />
<strong>June</strong> and to three Spanish participants on 10 <strong>July</strong> 2019.<br />
Dr. Thinlay Namgyal, Resident Doctor of Ladakh Men-<br />
Tsee-Khang Culture Centre gave an introduction on<br />
Tibetan medicine and activities of Men-Tsee-Khang. After<br />
the session, the participants were taken for a guided tour<br />
of the museum and the library. They also received health<br />
consultation from the doctor in accordance with the<br />
traditional Tibetan system of health care.<br />
Observation of Practical Anatomy and Pathology<br />
Museum<br />
A 4-day workshop on the observation of the Practical<br />
Anatomy and Pathology Museum at the Dr. Rajendra<br />
Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda was held<br />
from 9-12 <strong>July</strong> 2019. This was organized primarily<br />
for second year medical students of Men-Tsee-<br />
Khang College. Two doctors from the Research and<br />
Development Department of Men-Tsee-Khang - Dr.<br />
Tenzin Lhundup and Dr. Sonam Wangmo, also took part<br />
in the programme.<br />
Under the leadership and guidance of Dr. Suman Yadav,<br />
Head of the Anatomy Department, six of her dedicated<br />
faculty members conducted the practical Anatomy<br />
workshop covering the complete cadaveric regional<br />
anatomy sessions, radiology, embryology, skeleton and<br />
a guided tour to the anatomy museum. The participants<br />
also got an opportunity to observe the rich collection<br />
of diseased organs displayed in the museum of the<br />
Pathology Department.<br />
Men-Tsee-Khang (Sowa-Rigpa) would like to extend<br />
heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government<br />
Medical College, Tanda and its faculties.<br />
Emory Tibet Medical Science Programme<br />
The 7 th Emory Tibet Medical Science programme (ETMS)<br />
was held successfully at Men-Tsee-Khang (Sowa-Rigpa)<br />
College from 24 <strong>June</strong> to 5 <strong>July</strong> 2019. As usual, this<br />
programme included two parts: a two-week Bio-Medical<br />
Science education programme for Men-Tsee-Khang<br />
students taught by the Emory professors and a five-day<br />
Tibetan Medicine Study programme for Emory medical<br />
students conducted by Men-Tsee-Khang faculty.

A team of four experts from the Emory School of Medicine<br />
gave lectures on the chosen topics Pharmacology and<br />
Infectious diseases during the first five-day session<br />
(24-28 <strong>June</strong>), and Neurology and Psychiatry during the<br />
second session (1-5 <strong>July</strong> 2019). Over ninety medical<br />
and Astro-Science students participated actively in the<br />
workshop. The sessions of the Emory Professors were<br />
translated into Tibetan by Mrs. Tenzin Paldon, science<br />
translator at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives,<br />
and Dr. Namdol Lhamo, college lecturer.<br />
From 24-28 <strong>June</strong> 2019, a group of eight Emory students<br />
from the fourth batch participated in the Tibetan<br />
Medicine Study Programme at Men-Tsee-Khang College.<br />
Apart from lectures on Tibetan Medicine and Tibetan<br />
Astro-Science, the students had a session of clinical<br />
observation at the Men-Tsee-Khang outpatient Clinics,<br />
and an educational tour to the pharmacy unit and the<br />
museum.<br />
MEDICAL CAMP<br />
Jangthang<br />
The 2 nd Jangthang mobile camp took place from 3 to 14<br />
<strong>June</strong> 2019. Dr. Dekyi Dolma, Chief Resident Doctor of<br />
the Choglamsar branch clinic, along with support staff<br />
Ms. Tenzin Dolker and Mr. Tenzin Tharlam visited Goyul,<br />
Kagshung, Hanley, Rongo, Nyoma, Samedh, Churmur,<br />
Sumdho and Magyu of Jangthang areas.<br />
During the 12 days medical camp, the doctor gave health<br />
consultations to 470 patients and advised on healthy diet<br />
and lifestyle. External therapy services were rendered to<br />
needy patients as well. The team also provided health<br />
care services at Vikas Army Kyare camp while returning<br />
back from Jangthang medical camp. Charity amounting<br />
to Rs. 233,912.55 was dispensed during the tour.<br />
2 Vikas Army Camp, Ladakh<br />
Dr. Thinley Namgyal, Resident Doctor of Men-Tsee-Khang<br />
Culture Centre, Ladakh and Mr. Karma Tsering organized<br />
a medical camp on 4 <strong>July</strong> 2019 at the Army Library hall.<br />
The doctor gave consultations to 30 Army personnel and<br />
prescribed ten days of medication along with diet and<br />
lifestyle advice.<br />
As requested by the army officers, a medical camp will be<br />
held after every fortnight at 2 Vikas Army Camp.<br />
Men-Tsee-Khang would like to thank the leadership of<br />
Emory School of Medicine, Dr. Bill Eley, coordinators Dr.<br />
Jennifer Goedken and Ms. Deirdre Abrams for making<br />
this programme a success .<br />
Itanagar<br />
A free medical camp was organized on the auspicious<br />
occasion of the 84 th birth anniversary of His Holiness<br />
the 14 th Dalai Lama on 6 <strong>July</strong> 2019 at the Men-Tsee-<br />
Khang Branch Clinic in Itanagar. The medical camp was<br />
organized by the Itanagar Buddhist Culture Society (IBCS)<br />
in collaboration with Men-Tsee-Khang. The Honourable
Chief Minister, Mr. Pema Khandu and MLA Mr. Tashi<br />
Tsering, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh paid visits.<br />
<strong>June</strong>-<strong>July</strong> 2019<br />
Department with support staff Mr. Dorjee Tsering<br />
provided the traditional Tibetan health care service to<br />
the group from 28 May to 6 <strong>July</strong> 2019. A total charity Rs.<br />
24,987.77 was provided during the month-long journey.<br />
DR. TSEWANG TAMDIN HONOURED BY<br />
AISDMDB COMMITTEE<br />
Men-Tsee-Khang (Sowa-Rigpa) would like to thank the<br />
Itanagar Buddhist Culture Society (IBCS) for providing a<br />
free clinic space in the Gonpa (monastery) area and for<br />
sponsoring the free medical camp on the occasion.<br />
Dr. Tsewang Tamdin, one of the visiting physicians to<br />
His Holiness the 14 th Dalai Lama was honoured by the<br />
organizing committee of AISDMDB (All India Shaheed<br />
Maj Durga Mall Capt Dal Bahadur Thapa Memorial<br />
Gold Cup Football Championship) for his outstanding<br />
contributions in the public healthcare services. The<br />
doctor received the award of “Outstanding Performance”<br />
at the closing ceremony of 31 st All India Shaheed Maj.<br />

Zanskar<br />
A team led by Dr. Thinlay Namgyal, Resident Doctor of<br />
Men-Tsee-Khang Culture Centre in Ladakh and three<br />
support staff conducted a medical camp in Zanskar areas<br />
from 13-19 <strong>July</strong> 2019. The team covered Parkachik village,<br />
Rangdum village, Zanskar Sorig Nyamshib Hospital,<br />
Zanglha village, Raru village, and Tashi Thongstsel village.<br />
The doctor gave health consultation to 296 patients and<br />
charity amounting Rs. 3,160.47 was dispensed.<br />
Men-Tsee-Khang would like to thank Ex-Tibetan School<br />
Student Alumni of Zanskar and Sorig Nyamshib Hospital<br />
for their support during the medical tour.<br />
Dharamsala<br />
A 2-day medical camp was held on 6 and 7 <strong>June</strong> 2019<br />
at the courtyard of Tsuglagkhang, Dharamsala. The team<br />
consisted of three doctors, one Tibetan Astro-Science<br />
Practitioner (TASP), and six support staff. The doctor<br />
and TASP provided 217 health consultation, 8 Kamkhab<br />
(acupuncture) treatment and 14 oral-astro consultations.<br />
Charity amounting to Rs. 21,317.37 were dispensed to<br />
poor and needy patients.<br />
Pad Yatra<br />
The fourth Pad Yatra, peace march by 96 Thailand monks,<br />
nuns and laymen from Dharamsala to Ladakh concluded<br />
successfully at Mahabodhi International Meditation<br />
Centre (MIMC) Leh.<br />
Like previous three years, this year also, Men-Tsee-<br />
Khang team led by Dr. Phuntsok Tendar, Materia Medica<br />
Football Championship on 17 <strong>June</strong> 2019 at Police ground,<br />
Dharamsala. Mr. Tashi Tsering Phuri, Director of Men-<br />
Tsee-Khang (Sowa-Rigpa) was the guest of honour at the<br />
tournament. The award was felicitated by Sh. Mast Ram<br />
Bhardwaj, Addl. District Magistrate, Kangra.<br />

103 YEARS OF MEN-TSEE-KHANG’S<br />
PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES<br />
Our Centenary outreach tours to USA East Coast/<br />
Canada, Europe, USA West Coast and South<br />
America conducted between April 2016 and<br />
March 2019 had been a great success due to the<br />
efforts of various support groups. Above all, the<br />
encouragements we received and the experiences<br />
we gained, contributed to our initiating more world<br />
tours. Our subsequent tours to various places had<br />
also been a great success.<br />
We plan to conduct more outreach tours (health<br />
consultation, oral-astro consultation, lectures/<br />
workshops on Tibetan Medicine & Tibetan Astro-<br />
Science, exhibition, sale of health products) every<br />
year.<br />
To mark Healthy body Healthy mind: celebrating 103<br />
years of Men-Tsee-Khang’s Public health services,<br />
outreach tours will be conducted in metropolitan<br />
cities In India namely: Shimla (7 and 8 May 2019),<br />
Bengaluru (18-20 October 2019), Mysore (22-24<br />
October 2019), Tawang (29 October-3 November<br />
2019), Jaigaon (8-10 November 2019), Salugara<br />
