News From The Trust
Now in its fourth year the BEVA Trust and British Horse Society Healthcare
Clinics are still very popular with member volunteers. This spring 37 vets and
6 EVN’s enjoyed four great days of experience, team work and camaraderie.
We are now looking for volunteers for the Autumn Clinics; Nottinghamshire
on 25th September, York on 8th October and Aberdeen on 23rd October.
Meet The BEVA President
Congress marks the end of Renate Weller’s Presidency and the beginning of
Tim Mair’s term. Before Tim takes the reins we ask them a few questions...
Renate, what has been your
presidential highlight?
This is a really difficult question to
answer… I guess the whole year really
drove home what a great profession
we are.
I know it sounds really cheesy but
wherever I went and whoever I spoke
to, it is pretty clear that while we
may wince and complain about a lot
of things we all work towards one
common goal which is to
help animals.
Can you tell us what you’re most
proud of achieving?
I’m pleased to announce we’re
launching Leg Up at Congress 2019.
A project to support new equine vets
entering the profession by providing
career advice and guidance from
established equine vets who have
been in their shoes. You can find out
more on the BEVA website.
Do you have any advice for Tim?
Enjoy it!!
Tim, what do you hope to achieve in
your presidential year?
Survive the year without any
disasters! But also...
• Continue BEVA’s work on the
current problems of recruitment
and retention.
• Support undergraduates
interested in pursuing a career in
equine practice.
• Support recent graduates in
equine practice with CPD and
mentoring.
• Investigate future developments
in equine practice in the next
10-15 years.
• Continue to promote
awareness of antimicrobial and
anthelmintic resistance and
investigate practical ways that
the profession can slow their
progression.
What do you think will be your
biggest challenge for the year?
Brexit!
4

Get to know Tim
We’ve asked Tim a few extra
questions to find out a bit more
about him.
Any favourite hobbies?
Hill-walking and gardening.
Where’s your favourite holiday
destination?
India.
Favourite career memory?
Performing a laparotomy to remove
a bladder stone in a horse on the
owner’s lawn (in 1981)! In the middle
of the surgery the owner arrived
with lemonade and cucumber
sandwiches! The horse made
a full recovery.
Performing a laparotomy
to remove a bladder stone
in a horse on the owner’s
lawn (in 1981)!
If you weren’t a vet what would you
do for a living?
Medicine I guess - maybe a
pathologist.
Our social media campaign
this year asks how far everyone
is travelling to Congress, so
#howfarwouldyougo?
170 miles.
What one thing would you take to a
desert island and why?
A hammock to relax and sleep in.
Giving Vets a Leg Up
We’re pleased to announce the launch of a new pilot scheme called ‘Leg
Up’ designed to support those entering the equine veterinary profession.
We catch up with Rachel Davis who has been training our coaches to find
out more.
transition into the workplace.
The Leg Up coaching scheme
provides a safe space for them to
do high quality thinking around
these challenges in the presence
of a trusted colleague – someone
who knows when to listen, when
to question and when to refer on.
This scheme aims to help newly
qualified vets develop the skills to
help themselves - navigating their
own professional journey, in their
own way, with maximum professional
growth and enjoyment.
We’ve worked with you over the
last six months to train our coaches,
what has happened and how has it
gone?
The trainees have worked really hard
in developing their coaching skills:
attending two full day workshops,
four online webinars and monthly
reflective discussion forums. During
this time, they have been learning
about the importance of presence,
connection, active listening and
incisive questions in coaching-style
conversations. They have also been
getting hands-on experience with a
volunteer equine vet.
How could a newly qualified vet
benefit from the Leg Up scheme?
Newly qualified vets can experience
a wide range of personal and
professional challenges as they
The scheme aims to
help newly qualified
vets develop the skills
to help themselves
How do you sign up to the Leg Up
scheme?
BEVA are running Leg Up as a pilot
for the first time. The scheme will
only be open to BEVA concessionary
members to see how much appetite
there is for this type of support
among vets and to make sure it
helps support those entering the
profession. BEVA are creating a page
on their website detailing all the
coaches’ profiles so you can browse
and self-select who you would like
to be your coach. Those interested
in joining the scheme should pick
three coaches they would prefer to
be coached by and then complete
the short application and email it to
legup@beva.org.uk.
The Congress
Committee
Answers...
If you could only attend one lecture this year what
would you choose?
Keeping the Sports Horse on the Road (Saturday)
“I can’t wait to hear what these ‘coal-face’ sports
horse clinicians have to say in a panel discussion
about how they ‘tweak and treat’ their patients.
People are understandably secretive about their
methods and this creates an air of mystery, but also
a fear of the unknown for those trying to learn in this
field. Linear learning from one mentor can lead to a
blinkered approach and so any opportunity for open
discussion is gratefully received!”
Lucy Grieve - Rossdales Equine Practice
Reproductive Examination, Equine Fetal Sexing,
Marco Livini (Thursday PM)
“If you are going to make me choose one, which I
really don’t want to, I will pick Marco Livini as he is
a marvellous speaker and I expect some great
imagery on show. But there are loads of lectures
I would like to listen to in all the sessions, including
Valeria Busoni on Stifle Ultrasound, the Reproduction
Workshop, Foal Medicine, Dean Hendrickson on
IVRP Antibiotic Choice and the Fine Tuning Before
Competitions lecture”.
James Crabtree - Stud Medicine
Dean Hendrickson on “What antibiotic should I be
using for my IVRP” (Saturday AM)
“In our hospital we have no best practice protocol
for use of IVRP and it is always a subject of debate.
With the plethora of papers on IVRP, it’s hard to work
out many things; which is the best antibiotic? At what
concentration? How long to leave the tourniquet in
place? How frequently to use IVRP? When can you
get away without doing IVRP? I’m looking forward to
some practical guidance from Dean Hendrickson.”
Sustainability
at BEVA19
This year Congress is focusing
on green initiatives to promote
sustaibility and do our bit for the
environment.
These include...
Water Bottles
This year each one of our
delegate bags will contain
a reusable water bottle to
reduce single-use plastic.
Find a water fountain and
fill up!
Digital
Paperwork
The BEVA19 Congress
handbook can be accessed
digitally. Last year 895
delegates chose digital,
saving 268,500 pieces of
paper.
A Second Life for
Delegate Bags
Any delegate bags left over
after Congress are sent to
charities for redistribution.
Last year our bags travelled
to the Gambia to be used
as school bags by the local
children.
Car Share
We’re encouraging our
attendees to consider
offering a lift to another
attending vet, this is not
only better for the environment but
benefits you too!
• Reduced fuel costs and parking
fees
• Better air quality and lower
carbon emissions due to
reduced traffic fumes
• Less congestion and shorter
journeys due to fewer cars on
the road
• The journey becomes social
Reproduction - “an everevolving
discipline”
Jonathan Pycock,
course organiser
for Equine
Reproduction at
the Next Level
tells us about his
new course
Equine
reproduction is
an ever-evolving
discipline. As well
as the basic aspects being important,
there is a need for colleagues already
experienced in the field to develop
and hone their skills. This course
is designed to offer that advanced
learning experience. A few select
topics have been chosen and will
form the basis of interactive lectures
in the morning, followed by “handson”
wet labs in the afternoon.
With the increase in interest
surrounding assisted reproductive
techniques, embryo transfer
including flushing, searching and
preparation for transfer is of interest
to many practitioners. Likewise,
due to new techniques, subfertile
stallions can still be included in AI
programmes. The course provides a
unique opportunity to study these
topics in a “working” environment
as the course is at one of the UK’s
largest embryo transfer and semen
freezing centres.
The course will also discuss the
relatively new techniques of Doppler
ultrasound, the less understood
stallion ultrasonography and
therapeutic approaches to reduce
early pregnancy failure.
Pioneering stem cell treatments for
mares with endometrosis will also be
reviewed and discussed.
Crash Avoidance for the Ambulatory Vet
10/12/2019
Goodwood Motor Circuit,
West Sussex
Trevor Bell and Goodwood Advanced Driving Team
With driving part of an ambulatory vet’s everyday routine,
the winter weather can increase work-related anxiety. Learning
how to drive safely on wet, windy and even icy roads provides
peace of mind whilst significantly lowering the risk of accident
and injury.
This course aims to prevent spins and crashes, both in the car
and mentally. It teaches participants how to identify and manage
stress, strains and anxiety both within themselves and their
colleagues, as well as giving one-to-one tuition with a professional
Goodwood driving instructor to drive quickly but safely in varying
situations, ensuring you make it to your appointments in one
Driving this Winter
Winter isn’t a fun time to drive: the roads are wet, winds batter you from
all directions and you’ll inevitably get stuck in more traffic than normal. To
keep any skidding and tyre squealing to the track, we’ve put together some
top tips for winter driving (we know it’s boring but we want our vets to stay
safe!)
During extreme weather motorists are
advised against driving altogether,
but for ambulatory vets this is simply
not an option. From a quick Google
search, much of the guidance is
geared towards driving in heavy
snow, a rare occurence in the UK.
The doom and gloom of Britain’s
weather is more likely to bring wind,
rain and dark nights. We collated
some simple tips to limit the misery
it brings.
Wind
• Take extra care when overtaking
others - particularly be aware
of sudden gusts of wind when
passing large vehicles such as
lorries.
• Hold the steering wheel firmly
- maintaining a constant grip of
the wheel will give you as much
control as possible.
Rain
• Reduce your speed - slowing
down lessens the risk of
aquaplaning.
• Use a low gear when driving
through flooded areas - keep
your engine revs up but don’t
rush to avoid flooding your
engine.
• Put your lights on - you will
improve your visibility to others
when driving in the rain or spray.
The Dark
• Check your lightbulbs - ensure
both your rear and head-lights
are functioning correctly.
• Clean your windows and
windscreen - condensation
can leave a hazy film on your
windscreen and windows which
will impair visibility.
• Pack supplies in case of
emergency - store a collapsible
shovel and reflective jackets in
your boot.
21/11/2019
Newmarket,
This meeting is designed to give practical advice to equine
with mares. There is often a fine line between what is classified as
a behaviour, what is attributed to hormonal imbalances and what
is caused by gastrointestinal or musculoskeletal pain. This course
should give sufficient insight to allow equine vets to tease apart
the thorny issues of how much a “Moody Mare’s problems” are
caused by pain, behaviour and hormonal abnormalities.
2020 BEVA CPD Announced
BEVA’s Learning Manager Sarah Gasper tells us what the 2020 course
programme has in store for us.
insurance radiographs. The second
day is aimed at vets, nurses and
techs alike.
Also new for 2020 is Orthopaedic
Ultrasound with Jean-Marie Denoix
teaching, as well as the Colic Day
with Tim Mair.
BEVA CPD courses are
designed to suit all
levels of the profession,
from new graduates to
experienced surgeons
If you could only attend one course
in 2020 which would it be and why?
It’s difficult to decide! Probably “Pain
Management in Ambulatory Practice”
as it covers practical tips on how to
manage pain on a yard, something
that with laminitics and fractures
can be very difficult. “How to Heal
Wounds in Horses” course would also
be very useful though!
What’s new for 2020?
There are several new courses!
PPE Imaging is designed as a step
up from our popular PPE course. This
new course will cover the imaging
aspects of vetting with a theory and
discussion day about interpretation
of radiographs, ultrasound and
endoscopy and a practical day
looking at how to take the perfect
set of TB and Sports Horse sales and
How did BEVA put together the 2020
programme?
Our CPD programme is drafted by
the elected Education Committee
using feedback from the annual
members survey and post-course
questionnaires. Previous course
history including popularity of the
course, and what the Education
Committee think members would
benefit learning from all help make
up our programme.
Booking is now available on most
of our 2020 courses. Book online or
Celebrating 15 years of
Disease Surveillance
We’re celebrating with the Animal Health Trust (AHT) the 15th anniversary
of the Defra / AHT / BEVA Disease Surveillance Scheme. We find out more
about them...
What is the Defra / AHT / BEVA /
Disease Surveillance Scheme?
The Equine Quarterly Disease
Surveillance Reports collate equine
disease data arising from multiple
diagnostic laboratories and veterinary
practices throughout the United
Kingdom. This provides an exceptional
insight into equine disease
occurrence on a national scale. It
is produced by the Department for
Food, Environment and Rural Affairs
(Defra), the British Equine Veterinary
Association (BEVA), the Animal &
Plant Health Agency (APHA) and
the Animal Health Trust (AHT) on
a quarterly basis and is distributed
to an extensive list of national and
international recipients as well to all
BEVA members
How are you celebrating the 15th
year of the collaboration?
Colleagues from AHT will be at the
BEVA Members’ Lounge at BEVA
Congress 2019 to share what the
scheme has achieved so far and to
introduce the reports to new readers.
BEVA will also be awarding the AHT
with a certificate of appreciation in
recognition of the hard work they do
to keep the equine veterinary profession
informed about disease status.
Equine disease has
been especially
topical this year, given
the magnitude and
continuation of the
flu outbreaks. BEVA is
proud to play an active
role in this important
surveillance initiative.
Income Protection from PG Mutual
Did you know your BEVA membership entitles you to 15% off an
Income Protection policy with PG Mutual? Account Manager, Mo Shaikh,
answers a Q & A on policy benefits.
What does the PG Mutual policy
cover?
The policy can cover up to 70%
of your gross income or £5,200 a
month, whichever is lower. If you are
injured, or you fall ill, the monthly
benefit is payable until you are well
enough to return to work or reach
the age of 65, whichever is sooner.
PG Mutual assess all policies before
implementation and can also cover
Why should Equine Vets consider
Income Protection?
Many Equine Vets have financial
commitments such as rent,
mortgages and credit cards to
the usual monthly bills. If you are
unfortunate to be off work due to an
injury or illness, these commitments
will still need to be paid.
Income Protection could ensure that
the bills are taken care of leaving
you to get better, making sure your
lifestyle and that of your family does
not need to change.
Are there any additional benefits to
having a PG Mutual policy?
