The 4 th Annual Low Cost Pet Vaccine clinic hosted by resident and

of event was to ensure all pet owning families can afford quality health

a cost-effective alternative for owners who need to get a single vaccine,

WESTGATE FALL GARAGE SALE 

Saturday, October 12, 2019 

Westgate’s deed restrictions state that we can only have garage sales 

on designated days for the community; having them any other time can 

earn you an immediate fine. So it’s time again for our Westgate Garage 

Sale; this year, the Fall event will happen on Saturday, October 12 th . So 

while you’re spring cleaning, go through that extra “stuff” you have in 

your closets, de-clutter your house and make some extra money! 

That week, we’ll have signs out at the entrances of the neighborhood to 

advertise the event for the community. You can put additional signs to 

direct people to your house, but please remove them after your sale is 

over. 

SPLASHPAD AND POOL SEASON ENDING 

The pool will be open weekends in September. The splashpad will be 

open spring break through October, depending on weather. The last day 

the pool is open is Sunday, September 29 th . 

KEEP YOUR POOL CARDS PERMANENTLY!! 

As pool season comes to an end, remember to KEEP YOUR POOL ACCESS 

CARDS PERMANENTLY! Do NOT throw them away. One of the benefits of 

this system is that you don’t have to get new pool tags every year. In fact, 

if you throw away or lose your pool card, it’s $25 to replace it; you have to 

contact PCMI to get a new one. 

WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CALL THE NON- 

EMERGENCY NUMBER 

When an incident happens - suspicious person or vehicle, someone rifles 

through your car, etc - call the non-emergency number whether anything 

was taken or not, whether damage was done or not. Our contract officer 

spoke to some residents while he was responding to a call. They informed 

him that they did share info on social media but didn’t call HCSO. HCSO 

is not monitoring Social media. HCSO put their non-contract officers 

where there are problems. No calls = no problems. One call a week or so 

does not prompt a concern. But if everyone who posted on social media 

called it in, it would be, then HCSO would be justified in allocating more 

resources in our area to combat crime: 713-221-6000.

In an effort to educate our residents, each month we highlight some deed 

restriction or other item that needs improvement in Westgate: 

PARKING AND PROHIBITED VEHICLES: 

According to our Declarations of Covenants, Conditions, Restrictions 

and Easements, pg. 12-13, cars etc. must be IN WORKING ORDER, have 

current stickers etc. and are in daily use. Vehicles like a “boat, trailer… 

recreational vehicle” cannot be stored on your lot unless it is concealed; 

a TEMPORARY permit can be issued for certain situations. 

Regarding parking, vehicles MUST NOT “BLOCK A SIDEWALK.” Also, “NO 

MORE THAN THREE VEHICLES…may be parked on the driveway.” 

Any repair work to vehicles that is visible to the street MUST BE 

COMPLETED WITHIN 12 HOURS AND NOT OCCUR ON A FREQUENT/ 

REGULAR BASIS, so as to prevent disorderly and unkempt appearance 

in Westgate.

parking on BOTH sides of the street or in the middle of a culdesac space. 

While I understand the difficulties of where to park, parking on both sides 

of the street or filling up an empty culdesac CREATES A DANGEROUS 

SITUATION. Emergency vehicles cannot pass through to save a life! 

PLEASE, when parking on the street, stagger your vehicles so they are 

NOT PARKED DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM ANOTHER VEHICLE on the other 

side of the street and do NOT DOUBLE PARK IN A CULDESAC! 

Following these instructions helps keep our neighborhood looking neat 

and thus keeps up our property values, as well as helping keep Westgate

REPORT WITH THE SHERIFF’S DEPT. 

If you ever have to file a report with the Sheriff’s Department, whether 

after calling 911 or the nonemergency number (713-221-6000), be sure to 

let the deputy know that Westgate has a contract with the Sheriff’s Dept. 

through our MUD district (Harris County MUD #70). That way, the incident 

will be reported to our contract deputies, giving them information on 

what to look for in our community. Also, be sure to report the issue to our 

Crime Watch committee at crimewatch@westgatetx.net. They discuss 

the problems with our deputies as well.

It takes little effort to extend kindness. The entire month of September 

gives ample opportunity to practice being kind. It’s National Courtesy 

Month! The word courteous comes from the Middle English word 

‘kindness,’ which means ‘noble deeds’ or ‘courtesy.’ One of the greatest 

novelists in the English Language, Henry James, once said: “Three things 

in human life are important: The first is to be kind; the second is to be 

kind; the third is to be kind.” So, what does it mean to be courteous? 

Courtesy can mean several things to different people. To some, being 

courteous means to be helpful. To others, being courteous means to be 

polite and having good manners. Courtesy can be words spoken or an 

action towards someone. Courtesy is about manners and respect. How 

you choose to show someone courtesy is entirely up to you! A single 

kind word keeps one warm for three winters - Chinese Proverb Courtesy 

should never have limits for people you know. Showing a stranger 

common courtesy could be the defining factor of their day. Oftentimes, a 

small gesture, such as a compliment, can make a person feel appreciated. 

When people are considerate to one another, a positive effect happens. 

Moods improve and smiles are easily found. Starting your day with a 

polite demeanor will have a ripple effect for the people you encounter! 

There are so many ways to show kindness to people through courtesy. 

Hold the door open for the people behind you! Mow your elderly 

neighbor’s lawn! Compliment that shy person you see every day on the 

bus! Above all, SMILE at everyone you meet!

CFISD EARNS NINTH STRAIGHT 

TEXAS SMART SCHOOLS 5-STAR RATING 

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD earned its ninth consecutive five-star rating in the 

Texas Smart Schools Initiative, an online resource that aims to improve 

education by identifying Smart Schools that are both effective and 

efficient. Gathering data on both academic progress and spending, each 

school district and campus is assigned a Smart Score of one to five stars. A 

five-star rating indicates the strongest level of relative academic progress 

combined with the lowest relative spending. CFISD is one of 51 public 

and charter school districts across the state to earn a five-star rating. In 

addition, CFISD has earned the highest possible rating in all nine years of 

the Texas Smart Schools program. Texas Smart Schools uses three-year 

averages to obtain more stable and persistent measures of academic 

progress and spending. The 2019 Texas Smart Schools results are based 

on data from the 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years. 

JUNIOR POLICE ACADEMY CONNECTS 

YOUNG STUDENTS WITH OFFICERS 

In finding new ways to be engaged with the CFISD community, the 

district’s Police Department recently completed its first-ever Junior 

Police Academy, giving students a week of learning and activities and 

helping foster the relationship between officers and their constituents. 

Created for 9-and-10-year-old students, the academy featured sessions 

at Cypress Ridge (June) and Cypress Springs (July) high schools. 

Originally set up for 45 participants per session, the academy swelled to 

96 in total attendance. Participants were grouped together into smaller 

squads, with officers serving as mentors and interacting with cadets on 

a personal level. 

Officers and cadets alternated between outdoor activities, hands-on 

instruction and classroom training each day. Session topics included 

social media safety, stereotyping and bullying, gang prevention, drug 

prevention and gun safety. Cadets learned mapping skills and tourniquet 

application among others, while other activities emphasized team 

building and problem solving. Physical training was incorporated daily, 

with cadets competing in an obstacle course. Fun activities were also fit 

into the week, giving campers and officers even more opportunities to 

interact and connect. Cadets were also treated to unique meet-and-greet 

opportunities with local public safety first responders. Police pilots and 

tactical flight officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety flew 

and landed a helicopter at each campus, while Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire 

Department firefighters and paramedics showcased a firetruck. 

Members of the Cypress Creek EMS visited cadets at Cypress Springs, 

teaching a hands-on lesson on tourniquets. Feedback was positive and

CFISD MUSICIANS EARN COVETED SPOTS 

IN HOUSTON YOUTH SYMPHONY 

Three CFISD students have gone above and beyond in the field of 

orchestra over the summer, as Romir Adkar, a rising eighth-grade student 

at Smith Middle School and Rohil Watwe and Anika Adkar, rising freshman 

and sophomore students at Bridgeland High School, respectively, were 

among 400 musicians selected to play in the Houston Youth Symphony 

for the 2019-2020 season. 

With three full orchestras and two string orchestras - including a 

debut ensemble - the Houston Youth Symphony pledges to offer a 

comprehensive musical experience for young musicians between 7 and 

19 years old at any skill level. Orchestras rehearse weekly to prepare for 

three public concerts at Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall each season. 

In addition, leading professionals from the Houston area lead sectionals 

for each orchestra and workshops and other opportunities are available 

for musicians. 

The audition process is conducted in April and May and those accepted 

into the program were notified in June. Watwe and the Adkars will all 

be part of the Debut String Orchestra, which is under the direction of Dr. 

Jackson Guillen and provides foundational experience for developing 

string players. 

Three concerts are scheduled for the Debut String Orchestra: Nov. 3, 

2019; Feb. 9, 2020 and May 3, 2020.

CFISD STUDENTS EARN TOP HONORS 

AT FBLA NATIONAL CONFERENCE 

Five CFISD students from three highs schools earned top honors at 

the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership 

Conference held in San Antonio. 

Cypress Woods High School seniors Amal Gupta, Tristan Wiesepape 

and Stephen Cheng placed second in Computer Game and Simulation 

Programming. The event requires students to create a game from scratch 

without any help from advisers or other adults. The game must be based 

on the current year’s prompt. 

Cypress Ranch High School senior Vinaya Parimi placed second in 

Business Ethics while Cypress Ridge High School senior Pavan Agrawal 

placed sixth in Coding and Programming. 

Students who attended the FBLA National Leadership Conference 

enhanced their business skills, expanded their networks and participated 

in more than 70 business-related competitive events. In addition to 

competitions, students immersed themselves in interactive workshops, 

visited an information-packed exhibit hall and heard from motivational 

speakers on a broad range of business topics.

is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive 

youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, 

FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater 

Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including 

one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal 

playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive 

coaching and more. No tryouts are required.

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to 

visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7 PM Wednesday nights at Peace

Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with

The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities

BRIDGELAND FUN RUN/WALK FOR HEROES 

This Bridgeland Fun Run/Walk for Heroes will be held October 19, 2018, 

at 8 AM at the Lakeland Village Festival Park in Bridgeland in Cypress,

com. The event will include an 8 AM 5K walk/run and a 9 AM children’s 

1K run thru the Bridgeland’s beautiful parks & lakes along with booth 

& food vendors, a bouncy house, a rock climbing wall, entertainment 

and activities for the children. The children’s walk is open to strollers 

and wagons. Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 male and female 

5K runners. Medals will be awarded to all children under 10. 1 st , 2 nd & 

3 rd place prizes will be awarded to the winners of the Children’s Super 

Hero Costume Contest. Make Sure You Honor your Military Hero by giving 

us the name of the veteran or active service member you would like 

to honor and we will create signs along the race course to honor their 

service. The Race is sponsored by The Bridgeland Community Supports 

Veterans, Inc., which is raising funds to support veterans, educate our 

children and build a Veterans Memorial in Bridgeland. 

9 TH ANNUAL FAIRFIELD TRIATHLON 

Sunday October 27, 2019, 7 AM start 

The triathlon features both a triathlon and a duathlon for participants. 

Triathletes will swim 300 meters in North Bradford Lake. Then ride a ten 

mile bike course followed by a three mile run along the trails of Fairfield. 

Duathletes will start with a one mile run around both Bradford Lakes, 

then a ten mile bike followed by the same three mile run course as the 

triathletes. 

All participants will receive dry fit shirts, finisher medals, age group 

awards, post-race party with refreshments and a finish line photo. 

Individuals will compete for awards in five-year age groups. The race site 

is located in Cypress, Texas in the Fairfield Community. Headquarters is 

the Fairfield Athletic Center on Mason Road with the race site just up the 

street at the lake. 

The event accepts both individual entries and relays. Relays consist 

of three athletes with each doing one segment of the race. There is a 

minimum age of twelve years of age to compete in the event. The event 

is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and will follow their rules and guidelines.

Candied Acorn Squash 

You could make this on National Acorn Squash Day September 7th! 

Ingredients: 

1 acorn squash, halved and seeded 

1/4 cup butter, divided 

1/4 cup packed brown sugar, divided 

Directions: 

Place both halves of the squash cut side up on a microwave-safe plate or 

dish. Put 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar into 

the cavity of each half. 

Cook for 8 to 10 minutes in the microwave on full power. Rotate the 

squash a couple of times to ensure even cooking. When the flesh is soft,

Strawberry Cream Pie 

You could make this on National Strawberry Cream Pie Day September 

28th! 

Ingredients: 

1 quart strawberries, sliced 

1 (13.5 ounce) package strawberry glaze 

1 (4 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 

1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar 

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

1 cup heavy whipping cream 

1 (9 inch) baked pie crust 

Directions: 

Stir strawberries with glaze in a bowl and place in refrigerator to chill. 

Stir cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar, cinnamon and vanilla extract 

together in a bowl. 

Beat cream in a separate bowl with an electric mixer just until it begins 

to thicken; add cream cheese mixture and continue beating until thick. 

Pour cream mixture into baked pie crust, top with strawberry mixture. 

Chill at least 1 hour before serving.

Garden Tips For September 

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. 

• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. 

Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron 

cheleates. 

• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around 

the roots. 

• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with 

a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. 

• Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations 

explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been 

dormant wake up. 

- Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and 

thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to 

the undersides of the leaves. 

- Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale 

and mealybug. 

• Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. 

• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. 

• Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the 

number of eggs that make it to Spring. 

• St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue 

to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to 

produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. 

• Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that 

appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological 

controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus 

thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on 

the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the 

application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them 

to get nice fresh Bt. 

• When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch 

disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights 

drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. 

• Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of 

new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning 

should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. 

• Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and 

the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out 

starting in mid-August.
