NEWBURYPORT — A golfer, suffering
from anxiety when he played, comes in
Cape Ann Botanicals to buy a few honey
sticks, infused with cannabidiol (CBD),
a non-intoxicating chemical in cannabis.
Nibbling on the honey between holes
improves his scores.
An elderly woman, who chews CBD
gummies sold at Cape Ann Botanicals,
announced to the store staff recently that
the pain in her hands was reduced enough
that “I can hold the steering wheel again.”
And when a couple came to buy CBD
treats for their over-wrought dog, store
manager Carla Villa noticed that the
man was disoriented and showing signs
of suffering from Parkinson’s disease. She
suggested he try a CBD vape, and in a few
minutes his shaking was so much less, he
told his wife, “I think we can try going out
to dinner again.”
These and hundreds of other North
Shore residents are being helped by the
CBD-infused lotions, ointments, balms,
vapes, gummies and chocolates sold at
Cape Ann, as well as at clothing stores, gas
stations and liquor stores.
ingredient found
in marijuana,
but for many it
offers a variety
of benefits, such
as reducing pain,
inflammation
and anxiety. It is
often sold to help
induce sleep.
“Cannabis is booming,” Villa said.
Retired Patriots tight end Rob
Gronkowski announced last week that
he has joined the CBD bandwagon. On
the recommendation of his father, who
used CBD products for his back pain,
Gronskowski tried it and said, “I am painfree,
and that is a big deal. I was blown
away with how well it worked.”
He is now in partnership with Abacus
Health Products, the makers of the
CBDMEDIC line of topical creams,
lotions and ointments.
But here in Newburyport, Cape Ann
Botanicals customers can no longer buy
its CBD vapes. And starting January 15
they cannot acquire any CBD edibles.
Last month, Frank Giacalone, director of
the Newburyport Public Health, notified
Cape Ann Botanicals, 48 Pleasant St., that
the board of health has ordered “effective
1/15/20 food products containing CBD
are prohibited from being sold and must
be removed from your establishment.”
This ruling was based on a decision
by the state Department of Public
____________
N E W B U R Y P O R T
– After years of having to
travel to other schools to
compete, the Newburyport
High School track and field
team can now look forward
to racing on a track that has
a grandstand and press box,
lighting and sound systems
and even parking at Bradley
Fuller Field.
The irony was that
Newburyport, considered a
running mecca on the North
Shore, had a high school
track that was condemned
because of its “crumbling subsurface,
erosion of the top surface New track at Bradley Fuller Field
and poor drainage,”
youth running organizations and senior
according to supporters of the new track.
And the only parking was at the nearby
Nock Middle School and there was
nowhere to sit to watch the races or games
at the field.
The City Council and Community
Preservation Commission took steps this
summer to turn Fuller Field into a firstrate
athletic facility. They authorized
selling bonds, supported by Community
Preservation Funds, for almost $700,000
more to improve and enhance the Low
Street athletic facility.
And it is not just for track. Junior varsity
football, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and
youth soccer leagues will benefit from the
improved facility. Also private, non-profit
groups like Special Olympics can use the
green space inside the oval of the track.
In its application for funding from the
Community Preservation Act, city parks
director Lise Reid wrote: ““A modern,
renovated track will provide a safe and
convenient facility that benefits a broad
citizens.”
The funds, once the bonds are sold,
will provide money for phase two
improvements to the field. They include a
grandstand for 500 to 1,000 spectators, a
press box, a message board, a lighting and
sound system and better restrooms and
field house. There will also be fencing and
gates so the school can charge admission
To the delight of neighbors, who have
to put up signs banning parking on their
property, the plan is to add parking spaces
and a circular drive to drop off athletes
for practice or games.
While the improvements to the
field will be funded by Community
Preservation Act appropriations and
overseen by the city Parks Department,
the impetus for these improvements came
from a non-profit organization, Friends
of Newburyport Track (FONT), which
was created several years ago to harness
the energy and fund-raising power of the
area’s running community.
spectrum of Newburyport residents When it was formed, FONT President
beyond school teams, including the city’s
vibrant fitness and race communities,
Tom Carleo said, “FONT grew out of the
Community Announcements
To the Editor:
As the 27th consecutive season of summer music comes to a close at Maudslay Arts Center
in the Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, Community is time Connections
to recognize and thank the many
volunteers, sponsors, and news media that make this amazing non-profit outdoor venue a
reality each summer.
First, we salute the local bank that Business has supported Spotlight
the center and the arts for many years
and allows us to continue to offer excellent musical programs for reasonable cost - The
Newburyport Bank, which For partially sponsored the Saturday night series.
We would like to thank Linda Young Real and Coastal Estate Connections, •
Sale
For Sale Inc., of Amesbury, for their
generosity in donating the Les Paul Epiphone guitar, which was then personally autographed
by many of the 2019 Summer Concert Series musicians.
On Oct. 28, 2018 a large maple
Sports
tree cracked • Sports
windstorm and fell right
through the roof of the Concert Barn causing extensive damage, which was not covered by
insurance. Although many loyal supporters sent checks to assist in the repairs, there remained
much to do. Pets, Animals, Plus
Thanks to Coastal Connections and the support of our loyal patrons, we were able to raffle
off the guitar and cover the costs of repairs. At the final concert of the season, Amanda Carr
Health & Fitness
drew the winning ticket. The winner was Renee Hamel of Newburyport.
This year attendance was up once again thanks to the fine entertainment offered at MAC
and the continued publicity by so many media outlets - all the newspapers, magazines, radio
stations, cable TV, Isabelle dEntremont, and online services that helped get our message out
to the community, which resulted in increased attendance.
I would like to personally thank Carol Feingold, publicist; our gardeners Mary and Bob
LaPlante; Irene Johnson, our most talented graphic designer; Don Meskie, website manager;
Steve DeGuglielmo, accountant; Mike O’Leary, site manager, and our volunteer MAC
Board of Directors: Nicholas J. Costello, president; Cynthia Costello, vice president, and Tia
Costello, treasurer.
A special “shout out” to this year’s volunteers, who worked tirelessly to make this series
happen: volunteer coordinator Mary LaPlante, Marjorie Anderson, Edna Shirley, Rena
Roseman, Jean and John Lambert, Nancy Brogden, Sharyn Russell, Renee Hamel, Karen
Cook, Rosey Werner, and Charlie Costello.
We thank our generous patrons, many of whom signed on as financial supporters as Friends
of MAC. A complete list of donors is available on our website www.maudslayartscenter.org.
Last, but not least, we thank the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation,
particularly Ron Kovacs and staff at Maudslay State Park for their continued support of this
most important regional resource, and the Friends of the Maudslay State Park.
On behalf of all of us at Maudslay Arts Center, our deepest thanks and best wishes to
need to support and fund a new
track for Newburyport. It is a
shame that Newburyport’s track
is in such a state of disrepair that
we cannot even host home meets.
Yet, beyond the track team, we
recognized that Newburyport has
a reputation as a running mecca.
There are numerous groups,
activities and individuals, from
youth to seniors, who benefit
from the track–it is an important
community resource. An integral
part of our mission is to actively
promote and support our entire
running community.”
FONT raised significant
private donations from
individuals and companies,
notably the Institution for
Savings Charitable Foundation,
which donated $100,000 to
rebuilding the track in phase
one. The High Street Mile, which
wraps up Yankee Homecoming
week, has donated race proceeds
to FONT for the last several
years.
Starting in 2016, the CPC has
appropriated $335,000 from
community preservation funds.
Those come from the 2 percent
added to each property owners’
tax bills and matched by 11
percent state funds.
Initial funds for Fuller
Field came from $1.7 million
City, State Create CBD Catch 22
in unused funds from the
Bresnahan School project that
voters directed toward building
new athletic fields. A large
portion of this funding was
allocated to replace the old track
with a modern eight-lane track.
The CPC agreed last week to
drop a condition it imposed on
the funds that required the debt
The Vikings are Coming to Hampton
Hampton – Step back in time to Scandinavia during the late 8th to the 11th centuries when the Vikings visit
Hampton. Draugar Vinlands, a living history group dedicated to the accurate portrayal of combat and culture
during the Viking age, will be on the grounds of the Tuck Museum, 40 Park Avenue, on September 7 and 8, from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All are invited to attend the free event which will be held rain or shine.
“We’re pleased to partner with Draugar Vinlands because of their scholarship and attention to detail in presenting
Viking daily life,” said Betty Moore, interim director of the Tuck Museum. “We have worked with this
historical reenactment group before on projects and each time people have been fascinated by what they learn.”
Draugar Vinlands uses clothing, tools, weapons and technology available in dark age Scandinavia to bring an
authentic representation of Old Norse combat and culture to life. There will be demonstrations of tool making,
woodworking, Viking combat and weapons, clothing, food and drink, and daily living.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be
careful not to allow the backers of a
new financial “deal” to pull the wool
over the Lamb’s eyes. It could hold
fewer plusses and more negatives than
you were first led to believe.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a
good idea to finish all incomplete tasks
so that you can devote your attention
to next week’s projects. The weekend
could hold surprises for romantic Fernandas
and Ferdinands.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A
workplace suggestion you made a
while ago that you might have forgotten
could come back with a request to turn
it from idea to reality. Your social life
picks up considerably this weekend.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22)
Someone from the past could return
with an intriguing opportunity for
a future project. Check into it, by all
means. But don’t neglect your current
responsibilities in the meantime.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keeping
your claws sheathed and using good
humor instead to counter someone
who’s bad-mouthing the Big Cat isn’t
easy. But it’s the best way to avoid
more problems down the line.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22)
A workplace situation could improve if
you’re less critical and more supportive
of those who are, after all, trying to do
their best. Let them know you’re there
to help when necessary.
LIBRA (September 23 to October
22) A new job offer might not carry
all the benefits you’re seeking. Make
sure you know what you’re entitled to,
what is off the table and what is negotiable
before you make a decision.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November
21) A social obligation you would
rather get out of could hold some surprisingly
positive aspects. Why not go
and see for yourself? A family member
makes a curious request.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to
December 21) Before tackling that new
project awaiting you at home or on the
job, take time out for some much-deserved
pampering to help lift your spirits
and restore your energy levels.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to
January 19) Your social calendar
begins to fill up more quickly than
you expected. And that’s great. You
deserve to enjoy some good fun after
so much time spent on serious matters.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February
18) A domestic situation continues
to improve, thanks to all the tender,
loving concern you’ve shown. A colleague
makes a questionable move
that you might want to check out sooner
rather than later.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20)
A sudden turn in a romantic relationship
calls for both a rational and passionate
response. Keep the love level
high, but also find out why the problem
arose in the first place.
BORN THIS WEEK: You often set
high standards for others. But to your
credit, you set the same expectations
for yourself.
Health & Wellness
BY J. PETER ST. CLAIR, DMD
The Golden Years are much
more “golden” if your teeth are
in good shape. One of the most
difficult areas I have had to
address in my time as a dentist
are issues concerning aging
patients, specifically those who
require assisted or nursing care.
Whether you are the one
making decisions for someone
else, or you are older and can
make your own decisions, it is
easy to let home care and regular
dental visits decrease as time
goes on. Dental health needs to
stay at the top of the priority list
for many reasons. Quality of life
and the link between oral health
and systemic health are two big
ones.
Older patients will often say,
“I don’t need to fix that. How
much longer do I really have to
live?” And every time I respond
the same way, “If you told me
that you knew you weren’t
going to be around next year I’d
say I would agree with you…..
but you’ve been saying the same
thing for 15 years.” It’s worse
when the patients lose key teeth
when they had the opportunity
to keep them for their lifetime.
When an elderly patient has
If you watch the news, you might
have seen there’s a proposal underway
that would allow states to import
prescription drugs from Canada,
where costs are lower. Drugs are
cheaper in other countries because
their governments control the prices.
As it now stands, we can go across the
border and bring back a three-month
supply of our medications for personal
use, but there are pitfalls. Technically
it’s illegal, but it’s often overlooked at
the border. Going to Canada for your
Brighter Smiles...
a multitude of dental issues in
which some significant decisions
need to be made, I consider the
following issues:
• What is the general health
status?
• How old is the patient?
• What is the general
prognosis medically?
• Has the patient ever worn
anything removable in
their mouth?
• What is the minimal
amount of dentistry that
can be done that will not
alter the patient’s quality
of life?
• What are other treatment
options to maintain or
improve the patient’s
quality of life?
The general health status
of the patient plays a big role
in deciding how to approach a
patient’s dental care. People who
have medical problems that are
well controlled are usually okay
to receive general dental care. If
a person is in good physical and
mental shape, it is hard to use
age as a determining factor for
not maintaining good dental
health.
The most important factor
which I believe needs to be
considered is about quality of
life. Studies have shown that
loss of teeth results in a loss
in quality of life. Some people
with dentures have told me that
they can eat anything. Others
would pay anything to have
drugs can be inconvenient, and travel
costs can eat into the savings gained
by buying lower-cost prescriptions.
If you try to buy by mail, you don’t
really know who’s on the other end -
- the drugs could be counterfeit and
actually from a different country.
Then there’s the cost of shipping and
the exchange rate.
Here are some things to keep in
mind while this proposal is being
hashed out:
* Canadians aren’t too happy
about it, because they already have
shortages.
* The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration isn’t happy about it,
because the FDA thinks it’s protecting
us from bad drugs.
* The drug companies in the U.S.
THE GOLDEN YEARS
Senior Scene
their teeth back. The point is the
enjoyment of eating. There is no
one who could argue that eating
with false teeth is as enjoyable
as eating with real teeth.
The worst thing you could
do to a 70+ year old person (or
for that matter anyone, but the
older you get the worse it is) is
to remove teeth and make them
wear something removable in
their mouth. Dentures can be
very difficult to adjust to, and
it is even harder when you
are older. The problems with
dentures not staying in, the
patient not wanting to wear
them, and impacting a patient’s
nutritional intake are all issues
that are much more difficult for
the elderly.
The best way to avoid having
to deal with major issues as you
get older is to make sure you
take care of your teeth while
you’re younger. If someone you
love ends up in a nursing facility,
one of the most important
things you could do for them
is to make sure they get proper
dental care.
Dr. St. Clair maintains a private
dental practice in Rowley and
Newburyport dedicated to healthcentered
family dentistry. If there
are certain topics you would like to
see written about or questions you
have please email them to him at
jpstclair@stclairdmd.com. You can
view all previously written columns
at www.jpeterstclairdentistry.com/
Are Canadian Drugs in Our Future?
definitely aren’t happy about it. The
drug industry can do what it likes,
including passing along the costs of
research and development to us, the
consumer. Medicare, for example, isn’t
allowed to negotiate for lower prices.
If your drugs are expensive, talk
to your doctor. There might be a
suitable generic. Price shop at various
pharmacies. Call the manufacturer and
ask if it has coupons or a program with
reduced costs. Ask your pharmacist for
the lowest possible discounted price.
If you’re on Medicare Part D, be sure
you’re using a preferred pharmacy.
Look online at www.goodrx.com for
low cost drugs near you.
Meanwhile, keep an eye on the
news.
