Welcome... 

ample.bands.radar. An apt what3words identifier for this 

month. For those confused by this seemingly gibberish 

opening, take a moment to familiarise yourself with 

the geocoding system known as what3words. Essentially, it’s an 

algorithm that assigns a unique three-word identifier for every 

three-metre square patch of land (or water) around the globe. 

It makes identifying a remote location or a specific point within 

an open space very accurate, with obvious benefits for the 

emergency services – or those arranging a meet-up in the middle 

of nowhere. But life-saving attributes aside, it also makes for 

some amusingly appropriate word combinations. 

So, ample.bands.radar? Well, that’s a patch on Christchurch 

Green, where this month’s Wanstead Festival will welcome… 

ample bands. The door to Number 10 Downing Street can 

be found at slurs.this.shark, which seems to suit most of 

those who have resided there. Closer to home, you’ll find 

origin.events.judge and span.this.novel – Snaresbrook Crown 

Court and Wanstead Library, of course. 

There’s something neat (in both the formal and informal senses 

of the word) about having such a concise means of sharing a 

location. And Mongolia would seem to agree, adopting the 

service for their postal system. But we do lose all sense of 

context in the process: lions.moons.yours and props.quiz.extra 

may belong to neighbouring houses on Nightingale Lane, but 

without presenting the full street address, they could be as far 

apart as tent.shine.doll and tossed.jacket.nuptials. 

And Wanstead will always be more and mean more than an 

address, no matter what form it takes. And 

no three-word identifier could ever do it 

justice. And if you need proof of that...

First-ever large-scale, illustrated history 

of Wanstead House commissioned 

The Friends of 

Wanstead Parklands 

has commissioned 

Dr Hannah Armstrong 

– an expert in 18thcentury 

architecture 

and landscape design 

– to write the first-ever 

large-scale history 

of Wanstead House. 

“In existence for just 

100 years, Wanstead 

House was regarded 

as one of the most 

magnificent palaces 

in Europe. Tragically, in June 1822, every item 

within the house was sold at auction, prior 

to the house itself being demolished a year 

or two later,” said a spokesperson for the 

group. Due for publication in 2022 to mark the 

200th anniversary of the ‘grand sale’, the book 

Wanstead House, by Richard Westall 

will tell the story of the house, its grounds 

and its larger-than-life owners, and will be 

complemented by over 70 illustrations, some 

of which will be published for the first time. 

More information about the project will be 

available next year.

Clocks and timepieces will appear along 

Wanstead High Street this month, attached to 

trees, fences and street furniture. “They are the 

work of Aldersbrook and Wanstead Church 

primary schoolchildren for Art Trail Wanstead 

(7 to 22 September), which has a ‘Time’ theme. 

Local artist Brenda Coyle was invited to run 

some exciting art-based classes at the schools. 

Together they managed to create hundreds 

of Dali-inspired melted clocks, plaster of 

Paris timepieces and colourful sun-catcher 

hourglasses,” said trail organiser Donna Mizzi. 

Festival on Wanstead Flats: wildlife 

group calls for thorough assessment 

There are only five or six pairs of 

skylarks left breeding on Wanstead Flats 

The Wren Wildlife Group is calling for a more 

thorough ecological impact assessment to be 

conducted before a decision is made about 

the proposed music festival on Wanstead Flats 

next year. The City of London Corporation, 

which manages the land, has given the 

go-ahead for the event – expected to attract 

50,000 concert-goers – but organisers MAMA 

Festivals also require a licence from Redbridge 

Council. “Skylarks are one of many protected 

and declining species of wildlife that could be 

put in peril,” said a spokesperson. 

Local artist Karen Humpage has been 

constructing a large model cow which will be 

wandering around Wanstead on 7 September 

(10am to 1.30pm) as part of the art trail. Last 

month, Karen published a book featuring 

artwork and anecdotes of the cows that once 

roamed freely in the local area. “People will be 

encouraged to take a selfie with the cow for 

a suggested donation of £2, which will go to 

the charity Compassion in World Farming. The 

cow will also be at the Wanstead Festival,” said

An evening of stargazing in the grounds of 

Wanstead Cricket Club will mark the start 

of this year’s Wanstead Fringe. “There are 

two chances to see the night sky through 

powerful telescopes with experts on hand to 

show you what to look out for,” said organiser 

Ricardo Cerezo. The free event will take place 

on 6 September from 8pm to 9pm, and will 

be repeated the following evening. “One of 

England’s great astronomers, James Bradley 

(1693–1762), is buried in the churchyard next

Central Line upgrades between 

Wanstead and Leyton to reduce noise 

New track and sound absorbent pads are 

being installed on local sections of the Central 

Line to reduce noise. “We fully understand 

the effect that noise from the Tube can have 

on local residents, which is why we will be 

carrying out work on the Central Line between 

Leyton and Wanstead to try to minimise this,” 

said Peter McNaught, London Underground’s 

Director of Asset Operations. “This work is 

scheduled to be completed within the next 

two months during engineering hours, so will 

cause no disruption to customers.”

A taste for murder: celebrate 

Agatha Christie Week at the library 

Lottery grant worth nearly £100k to 

transform Redbridge Museum 

A murder mystery evening will take place 

at Wanstead Library this month to mark 

Agatha Christie Week. “Join a cast of colourful 

characters all set on dining with death! When 

Mr Boddy asks Lady Peacock to be his bride, 

the wedding breakfast turns to dead-overdinner, 

as the new vicar, Rev Green, hears 

confessions,” said a spokesperson. Set at 

Waddingtons Hall, participants will need to 

question the suspects to catch the killer. The 

event will take place on 14 September from 

6.30pm (tickets: £6). Call 020 8708 7400 

Redbridge Museum is set to undergo a major 

transformation following a £99,990 grant from 

the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The award 

will enable the museum based in Redbridge 

Central Library to revamp its exhibition space 

dedicated to local history. “From Ice Age Ilford 

to suburban Wanstead and Woodford… and 

the cultural diversity of today’s communities, 

the new showpiece displays will reveal 

200,000 years of Redbridge history,” said a 

spokesperson. The museum will close in 

autumn 2020 and reopen in spring 2021.

The producers of The Railway Children are 

searching for a local actor to play the role of 

Jim. “It would suit a young person with acting 

and singing ability, who wants to work with a 

professional theatre company,” said producer 

Katherine Mount. Rehearsals commence

new programme of talks

The Wanstead Historical Society has published 

its new programme of talks, which begins this 

month with a presentation on Oscar Wilde. 

“Oscar Wilde (1854–1900), was an Irish poet 

and playwright, who became one of the most 

popular playwrights in Victorian London,” said 

a spokesperson for the club, which meets on 

the first Monday of the month from 7.45pm 

at Wanstead Library (visitors: £3). Future talks 

will look at the history of Snaresbrook House 

(October) and the changing use of Wanstead

Two award-winning professional 

photographers will be offering an insight into 

their working lives at a Wanstead Fringe event 

on 11 September. Geoff Wilkinson, who runs

the images that make it into the newspapers

The Woodford and District branch of the 

National Trust (NT) has made a number 

donations to NT properties following the 

death of former member Gwen Clarke, who 

bequeathed £107,000 to the group. “Gwen 

worked at the London Hospital as a secretary. 

She moved to Wanstead in 1994 and then into 

Harts House Care Home… We are so grateful 

she gave us the chance of helping so many 

properties,” said Clive Boon. Beneficiaries 

include Rainham Hall in Havering (£15,000) 

and Scotney Castle in Kent (£11,000). 

Parents of children at Our Lady of Lourdes 

Primary School have decided not to proceed 

with legal action in their fight against 

academisation plans. “The feeling amongst 

the campaign group is that we don’t need 

to proceed further and waste thousands 

of pounds doing so… We hope the school 

and diocese learn from this because it is our 

children’s lives they are playing with,” said a 

campaign spokesperson. The school will now 

become part of the Good Shepherd Trust, a 

family of church schools and academies.

The doors of a new Wanstead gallery 

are being opened just in time for the 

10th Art Trail Wanstead. It will show 

stunning hand-painted masterpieces, 

which can be bought at a tiny fraction of 

the usual prices. At 51cm wide and 34cm 

high, even the gallery itself is a work of art. 

The Cornellieson Gallery and its contents, 

including the scaled-down easels, are the 

work of remarkable artist Janet McKay, who 

decided to take a break from handling large 

canvases. Her nickname is Nellie, which 

helped inspire the gallery’s name.

in Wanstead this month, featuring 

a small selection of work by local 

artist Janet McKay

The Stow Brothers at 117a High Street. It will 

be sure to impress art lovers who have a sharp 

eye for detail. 

Anyone attending The Stow Brothers’ eve 

of the trail reception on 6 September will 

be in for another treat. As the result of 

a collaboration with Janet’s art partner, 

technical wizard Martin Jones, there will be a 

chance to ‘tour’ the gallery via a virtual reality 

headset. (A further VR day will be added and 

shown on the trail website.) 

The two artists are already looking at ways to 

develop their projects, to delight people who 

enjoy life on a Lilliputian scale. One plan is to 

give dolls’ house enthusiasts the technology 

to tour their own creations, as if they are living 

inside their created rooms. Janet’s work also 

allows collectors to own fabulous individual, 

hand-painted famous works of art at 

affordable prices (mostly under £200). As Janet 

says: “I’m not selling a little painting, I’m selling 

a little world.” A couple of her works will also 

be shown in the window of Keating Jewellers. 

The miniaturist’s gallery and artworks have 

already had a brilliant reception at the 

Kensington Dollshouse Festival, which attracts 

the best craftspeople from all over the globe. 

Janet and Martin originally joined Art Trail 

Wanstead as special guests, and also have 

artwork installed in Christ Church. Much of 

their work reflects their interest in animation 

and illusion, and their artworks frequently 

deliver unexpected surprises and insights.

Bravo, Wanstead! 

The big news for last year’s Wanstead Fringe was the event’s first 

professional theatre production. This year, there are three. Chloe Longstaff 

takes a look at each 

Truly celebrating diversity in theatre, 

this year’s Wanstead Fringe is hosting 

three contrasting performances, 

offering something for all ages and 

interests. 

First up is The Border, an outrageous Brechtian 

parable that explores the lines we draw 

between ourselves and other people. Staged 

by Theatre Centre, which was founded in 1953 

and has decades of experience at bringing 

new writing to audiences, The Border is a 

timely and thought-provoking contribution 

to our questions of identity; life is about to 

be turned upside down for one small town as 

the border crossing is sealed shut, dividing 

here from there, us from them, this from that. 

In the midst of it all, Stranger, a young girl’s 

beloved dog, has gone missing. Will Stranger 

be found before the border closes, or will he 

be trapped forever on the ‘wrong’ side? This 

play is suitable for children aged 13-plus and 

will be particularly useful to young audiences, 

though relevant to everyone. It’s a must for 

anyone studying drama, citizenship and PHSE. 

We Must Throw The Cows Down The Ravine is 

our next production, by an award-winning 

theatre company, adapted from the bestselling 

book Voices of the Labyrinth by Spanish 

author Ricard Ruiz Garzon, where the reality 

of schizophrenia is explored. Told from the 

view of both patients and family members, 

these true testimonials challenge the stigma 

and discrimination experienced by people 

dealing with mental health issues and help 

us realise each individual’s journey is a very 

personal one. The show was first produced 

in Caracas, Venezuela and is now touring 

Europe. In June, it opened at Teatro La 

Maquina in Valenica before moving to the 

renowned Teatro Español in Madrid. In July, it 

transferred to London where it was performed 

at the Cervantes Theatre, and it will now be 

performed (in English) at the Wanstead Fringe! 

Last but not least is The Railway Children. 

This heart-warming tale is set to a stunning 

new musical soundtrack, bringing a touch 

of magic to the stage. When Roberta, Peter 

and Phyllis move to the country with their 

mother, they discover the joys of the steam 

railway and make new, unexpected friends. 

The only thing missing is their father. Brought 

to the Wanstead Fringe by the company who 

last year delighted audiences with sell-out 

performances of The Secret Garden and 

performed in the impressive Deaton Theatre 

at Forest School, this is an opportunity to see a 

West End-style musical right on your doorstep.

Aldersbrook Community Centre.

Art to the power of 10 

As Art Trail Wanstead clocks up a decade, founder Donna Mizzi looks 

forward to 2019’s time-themed event and explains why more residents 

are getting involved in creating art than they did 10 years ago 

Over the space of just 10 years, we 

have noticed that art is considered 

less the preserve of a few talented 

individuals to being more an activity that 

people of all ages and abilities can engage 

in. And the trail has shown that individuals 

do not always have to spend years at art 

school to create work that is admired or 

appreciated by members of the public. That 

said, many of our members have at some 

time joined local classes, courses or groups. 

It may be a change in society as more people 

find art accessible, relaxing, therapeutic and 

a break from uncreative jobs. And, of course, 

it may be the art trail that has helped drive 

that change and broken down some barriers. 

The volunteers involved certainly hope so. 

Organiser and Wanstead House tutor Anna 

Bisset says the trail can act as “a steppingstone 

into a community of people who are 

making and enjoying art, or even as a bridge 

from art student to professional artist – a really 

transformative experience!” 

Another valuable seam of artistic ability has 

been mined by Eugene Coyle via his trail art 

postcard project. Encouraging anyone to 

send in their own art card on this year’s theme 

‘Time’ has revealed many more impressive 

artists living locally. At the trail, come and 

see the postcard art. Or even better, come to 

Eugene’s stall at the Wanstead Festival and 

produce some of your own. 

Our local trail has forged new friendships, built 

a stronger community spirit and added beauty 

and colour to the area – several businesses are 

now keeping the trail’s artwork on show all 

year. Thank you to restaurant Filika, The Manor 

House, La Bakerie and The Stow Brothers, plus 

TfL for allowing artwork at Wanstead Tube 

station… and to any more that will join them 

in the future. The trail has added verve to the 

Wanstead Festival and helped inspire the 

setting up of the Wanstead Fringe seven years 

ago. It also reaches out to help encourage 

crafts people and designer-makers. 

All this would not have been possible 

without a small band of volunteers from the 

organising Art Group Wanstead, some of 

whom have been involved from the start. 

Take a bow art tutors Patrick Purcell, Ron Filer 

and Anna Bisset. Special thanks to Tomasz 

Wlodarczyk and Angela Daley, who each ran a 

trail for Wanstead. And to Jeanette Cole, Sally 

Asbury and Alison Stenhouse, among others, 

whose help has been invaluable. Many other 

wonderful volunteers – too numerous to 

mention here – have pitched in to help over 

the years.

New season, new support 

As the new season gets underway, Snaresbrook FC is keen to welcome 

more volunteers to its Nutter Lane clubhouse and more supporters to 

the sidelines, says Millicent Brown 

The new football season is now upon 

us – and things are up and running for 

our local club, Snaresbrook FC, based 

on Nutter Lane, Wanstead. Originally called 

RAFARNO (Royal Air Force Army Royal Navy 

Officers), Snaresbrook Football Club was 

established in 1948. 

The team has already played several friendly 

games – with both wins and losses – but the 

important thing is the players are all now fit 

for their first league game. And they have 

also been busy socialising at Wanstead’s 

Nightingale on the Green, which is sponsoring 

them for the second consecutive year. 

It didn’t take long for the historic football club 

to learn that soccer legend Frank Lampard Snr 

had bought their local public house – and 

soon afterwards had agreed to offer them 

sponsorship. Household name Frank – who 

was born in nearby East Ham and is the father 

of football’s Frank Lampard Jr – was signed 

as a West Ham youth player in 1964 before 

joining their adult team three years later. 

He then remained with West Ham until 1985 

before a short spell at Southend, and played 

for England from 1971 to 1980. 

This is the second year that the Nightingale 

pub and the football club have teamed 

up, and this year we’re hoping for some 

interesting developments. 

Snaresbrook FC, which is now being run by 

talented manager Rob Caine – who played 

for them as a child – is in the Essex Olympian 

Football League and narrowly missed out on 

achieving promotion last season. Throughout 

the year they were high-flyers, but finally 

ended up fourth despite the fact they had 

beaten the eventual champions in both 

league games.

Now what the team is looking for is local 

people who would enjoy socialising with 

players and family and helping out at the 

Nutter Lane clubhouse. 

Such volunteers and supporters would 

help build this family club, and they could 

also meet up at Nightingale on the Green 

to enjoy its regular quiz and Irish nights as 

well as live Premier League games on Sky 

Sports. 

“At a time when football clubs are struggling 

to survive at grass roots level due to lack of 

investment and dedicated people, I think it’s 

an appropriate opportunity to welcome any 

volunteers and supporters to play a part of 

this local community-based football club,” said 

Rob Caine.

GARDENS IN THE SKY 

Lots of people love the idea of installing a green roof but don’t know 

where to start. An event at this year’s Wanstead Fringe aims to change 

all that. Susie Knox from Wild Wanstead reports 

There’s a revolution going on in 

London. But if you want to see it, 

you’ll need to look up… Green roofs 

are appearing on buildings around the 

capital, creating a patchwork of vegetation 

across the skyline. 

According to a report from the Mayor of 

London, there are now 1.5 million square 

metres of green roof in Greater London. 

It might be new to the UK, but green roof 

technology is well established in countries like 

Germany, Austria and Switzerland. That means 

there’s now a substantial body of evidence 

quantifying the enormous benefits of making 

gardens in the sky. 

A green (or living) roof is one where 

vegetation or a habitat for wildlife is 

deliberately established. They can be on an 

impressive scale – creating parkland, areas 

to grow food or even bespoke habitats for 

wildlife. But for residential developments, 

they are usually what’s called an ‘extensive’ 

green roof, which means they are low 

maintenance and once established, largely 

look after themselves. They are vegetated 

with low-growing, drought-tolerant plants like 

stonecrop (sedum) or dry meadow grasses 

and wildflowers. 

Whatever the type, green roofs bring a 

whole load of benefits – some visual, some 

environmental and some even financial. 

These include providing insulation in winter 

and a cooling effect in summer (which can 

help reduce energy bills), extending the 

life of the roof, supporting biodiversity, 

improving air quality, capturing carbon, 

reducing noise and creating the green aspect 

known to enhance health and wellbeing (as 

well as looking a lot more attractive than 

roofing felt!). 

So, are people in Redbridge benefitting from 

the perks of green roofs? Well, at the moment, 

not so much, at least not compared to our 

neighbours in Waltham Forest and Newham. 

But there’s no reason why that shouldn’t 

change. 

Green roofs make a fantastic option for 

residential extensions – probably one of 

the most frequent developments here in 

Wanstead. They can be installed on existing 

roofs or at the time an extension is being built. 

If you want to find out more, an event is 

being held as part of this year’s Wanstead 

Fringe, which aims to provide a practical 

guide focusing on how to install a living 

green roof on your extension. The speaker is 

Chris Bridgman from green roof specialists 

Bridgman & Bridgman, who will provide 

practical demonstrations, case studies and a 

step-by-step guide to turn your roof from grey 

to green.

Lots of Wanstead 

residents will 

be familiar 

with the term rewilding. 

It’s a concept that’s gaining increasing 

currency in the UK in the conservation 

debate. It refers to the restoration of 

an area of land to its natural state, 

particularly to reintroduce species of 

animals or plants. 

The most famous example is the Knepp 

Estate in Sussex, which since 2001 has 

seen extraordinary increases in wildlife. 

Rare species like nightingales and purple 

emperor butterflies are breeding well there 

and populations of common species are 

growing at an astronomical pace. Rewilding 

is bringing hope that the UK can reverse the, 

frankly, alarming trends of biodiversity loss 

seen over the last 70-plus years. 

So far, so good… but could a form of 

rewilding happen in an urban environment? 

Say, in the middle of urban Wanstead? What 

would happen if nature was allowed to just 

do its thing here? 

Wild Wanstead has been working with 

Redbridge Council to undertake a trial to 

find out exactly that. Areas of parkland and 

several road verges have been left unmown 

to see what might emerge naturally, and to 

allow native wildflowers and plants to grow 

taller over the summer, providing nectar 

and habitat for insects, and to set seed by 

the autumn and be dispersed, spreading 

biodiversity. The trial site at George Green 

was surveyed to see what had emerged and 

the value of this approach for wildlife. And 

the signs were quietly encouraging: 

• zWe recorded over 80 species of trees 

and plants, most of them native (not 

garden escapes). Just think about that for 

a second. Would you have said even 10 

species existed on the Green? 

• zMany native British wildflowers grow tall 

if left unmown, and these have flowered 

as a result of the project. Some examples: 

the beautiful pink of common mallow, the 

tall spear-like shape of goat’s beard (or 

Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon), lemon balm and 

common ragwort, which will provide food 

for the caterpillars of the cinnabar moth. 

• zWe found some nice insect species in 

the long grass areas, including the Essex 

skipper butterfly. Why are they here? 

Their caterpillars will typically eat grasses 

such as cocks-foot, Timothy and common 

couch, all native grasses which have 

grown tall in central areas of the site. 

Butterflies like the understory the long 

grasses provide as shelter from predators. 

• zWe found indicator grass and plant 

species, evidence that all but confirms 

that George Green is a likely fragment of 

old acid grassland, the sort of place where 

highwaymen and bandits of old might 

have hidden out. 

• zThen there’s just the sheer beauty – at 

least to this eye – of the wind blowing 

waves through stands of wildflowers and 

long grass of different colours, forms and 

heights against the backdrop of local 

residents enjoying the Green on a hot 

summer’s day. 

So, overall, there are signs that, when 

left alone, nature returns, even to the 

middle of an urban environment.

Old enOUgh tO… 

In the second of a series of articles looking at the work of Age UK 

Redbridge, Barking & Havering, local artist Brenda Coyle explains why 

picking up a brush could be just what the doctor ordered 

Lots of people come in and ask about 

the old Cherry Tree Café. Do you 

remember the one on Woodbine Place, 

by the buses? Called the Cherry Tree, of 

course, as it once housed within its walled 

garden a (now deceased) large, beautiful 

cherry tree, which bloomed every spring 

with gorgeous pink blossoms. 

Nowadays, the doors are open again, but this 

time it’s become a wonderful space for arts 

and craft classes, luckily part of Wanstead’s 

Allan Burgess Centre, supported by Age 

UK Redbridge, Barking & Havering. Various 

art-based activities are on offer, ranging from 

loom weaving and clay modelling to jewellery 

making and painting, to name but a few. 

We are all aware that the arts are fast 

becoming an important element in building 

our wellbeing, not just for ourselves, but for 

our friends and families. Doctors and other 

primary care professionals are often social 

prescribing and referring people to join artbased 

classes, not just to learn and enjoy a 

new fun activity, but through many years of 

research, they now recognise that creating 

art is proven to relieve stress and relax our 

busy minds and bodies. This is done by 

supplementing medicine and our usual care, 

which is still very important, but the arts are 

now a documented factor in improving the 

mental and physical health of our community. 

I run such classes right here in Wanstead at the 

Cherry Tree Café every Tuesday afternoon. The 

classes are small, which enables each student 

to choose their own level and capabilities. 

Recently, we focused on Van Gogh and 

produced some stunning pieces of work. As 

we have a visually impaired student in our 

class, I always ensure the whole class works 

together, so I brought in some visual aids from 

Brenda Coyle 

the charity Living Paintings. This meant the 

students could use all their senses to visualise 

some of the famous painter’s work. We then 

moved on to using real sunflowers and even 

took some apart. I always want my students 

to feel they are included in all the lessons, 

whatever their abilities. We make a point of all 

sitting together and sharing our art. 

Teas and coffees are served and a group of 

fantastic volunteers help set up. Bob (Robert 

Butler) is fantastic and comes every week, 

rain or shine. He is our strong man and 

brilliantly sets up and takes down all the 

chairs and tables for us during the day. Peter 

Chamberlain (who runs the bridge class at the 

Allan Burgess Centre) comes in the afternoon 

when we are finishing. His job is to put all 

the furniture away, but he also has a secret 

mission: he is a potter and owns his own kiln, 

which comes in very handy when we need our 

clay creations fired! Kate or Kathleen take the 

register and greet all our students. Both are 

wonderful at making our students feel at ease.

WANSTEAD-ON-SEA 

Stanley and Brenda Lopata will be using this month’s Wanstead Festival 

to champion the work of their daughter, who is striving to improve the 

UK’s seas and beaches through her charity Sea-Changers 

Seven years ago, my husband, Stanley, 

and I moved to this area after having 

lived in the same house in Buckhurst 

Hill for 44 years. According to popular 

wisdom, this should have been a really 

traumatic experience, but it has turned out 

to be a wonderful new phase in our lives. 

We love Wanstead – its diverse and vibrant 

community and its proximity to London 

and Epping Forest. However, one thing 

that Wanstead cannot boast is a marine 

and coastal environment. Why then are we 

choosing to put our efforts into supporting 

the charity Sea-Changers? Let me explain. 

Since we moved, we have both been 

attending art classes and were delighted 

to have pieces of work in group exhibitions 

during last year’s art trail. We both joined 

Art Group Wanstead and we wanted to be 

involved in the Wanstead Festival, but as 

amateurs, we didn’t want to take a venue in 

the High Street to display our work. 

Back to Sea-Changers. This is a charity set 

up nine years ago by our daughter, Rachel, 

and her partner, Helen. They have been 

scuba-diving for many years and have seen 

how dramatically the marine environment is 

deteriorating, how beaches are polluted by 

plastics and how wildlife is being decimated. 

They have worked tirelessly, with an amazing 

team of volunteers, to make a difference to 

the seas and beaches around the British Isles, 

funding research projects, organising beach 

cleans and raising awareness in schools and 

workplaces. So many people, whether they 

are regular sea users or city dwellers, are now 

concerned about the state of the oceans. 

We have secured a stall at the Wanstead 

Festival, and we have asked local artists, many

of whom we have met through our art classes, 

to consider donating a piece of their work 

to Sea-Changers. On 15 September, we will 

be displaying their artwork on our stall and 

asking festival-goers to donate to the charity 

and choose a work on paper for £5, on board 

or canvas for £10 or a framed piece for £20. 

We are delighted by the response from artists, 

who are being very generous and seem more 

than pleased to be supporting this important 

charity. We have also arranged a link on Art 

Group Wanstead’s Charity Aid Foundation 

giving page. This means anyone reading this 

article who cannot visit the festival but who 

wishes to support the charity can do so. 

A sea life art workshop will also take place at 

the festival to tie in with our stall’s theme and 

we hope that Wanstead landlubbers will be 

inspired by the Sea-Changers story.

Future for Whipps 

In the second of a series of articles looking at the redevelopment of 

Whipps Cross Hospital, Wanstead resident Charlotte Monro explains why 

she is supporting a petition calling for government funding 

Our community desperately needs a 

new hospital. Rebuilding Whipps has 

wide support, not least in Wanstead, 

as I discovered when gathering signatures 

on the High Street for our petition calling 

on the government to fund the build. 

Quite a team is now set up at Whipps, working 

on more detailed proposals for the new 

hospital. I recently attended a community 

partners’ workshop as one of five Waltham 

Forest Save Our NHS delegates. Redbridge 

was also well represented with Councillor 

Dan Morgan-Thomas and Mike New, chair 

of Redbridge Health Watch. We were told 

the redevelopment work from now until 

September is focused on (one) developing 

ideas for how health services will be delivered 

in the future and the size of hospital needed, 

and (two) options for the land occupied by 

Whipps. This will inform a revised ‘Strategic 

Outline Case’ to be submitted to the NHS 

powers that be in December, the first hurdle 

for government approval. 

I believe it is vital that we, the communities 

who rely on our hospital, have a determining 

voice in these decisions. Certainly, this was the 

spirit among people attending the workshop. 

Discussion about the future shape of services 

showed peoples’ concern that the hospital 

must be designed with enough beds. They 

challenged the realism of expectations that 

care in the community – already overstretched 

– will significantly reduce the 

need for hospital care, and therefore the size 

of hospital needed. Back in 2016, the local 

health strategy made this assumption; some 

excellent community intermediate care 

services are now in place, but pressure on 

hospitals appears no less. “Rigorously evaluate 

predictions around bed numbers – have 

previous plans achieved what they promised?” 

is the message now recorded. Even the head 

of NHS England says the loss of beds has gone 

too far, we now need more. 

Can our new hospital be a model for 

environmental design? This we also asked. 

Surely, as we face the tipping point for 

climate change, this is a time for a carbon 

neutral hospital. The healthcare sector is 

responsible for anywhere from 3–10% of 

all carbon emissions worldwide. But some 

hospitals around the world have paid 

dividends through design features, such as 

those that allow natural sunlight to permeate 

throughout the building, offering the dual 

benefit of cutting back on winter heating 

costs and offering proven health benefits for 

patients over artificial lighting. So, where and 

how the new Whipps is positioned on the site 

could be crucial. Expertise in environmental 

design must be brought in now. 

Such an investment in a new hospital with 

enough beds for the growing population is a 

priority. Without adequate funding, it cannot

IN CARTOONS and television comedies, snoring has always 

been a source of humour. But for many sufferers and their partners, 

it is a serious matter. As well as damaging relationships, its 

effects – including poor quality of sleep and lack of sleep – can 

lead to far worse things. Yet strangely, research indicates that in 

90% of cases, snorers go untreated; most of them probably unaware 

help is available. 

HOW SERIOUS IS SNORING? 

Snoring is frequently, though not always, part of the condition 

known as Sleep Apnoea. This is characterised by a reduced 

capacity to breathe, or by pauses in breathing, during sleep. The 

pauses, called apnoea, can last from a few seconds to a few minutes, 

and may occur five to thirty times in an hour. Sleep Apnoea 

can lead to health complications such as heart disease, high blood 

pressure, diabetes, stroke, daytime sleepiness and difficulty in concentrating, 

and sufferers run a higher risk of having work-related 

or driving accidents. 

There are three types of sleep apnoea: Central Apnoea, Obstructive 

Apnoea and a combination of the two (Central and Obstructive). 

Central Apnoea results when the brain fails to activate the muscles 

needed for breathing during sleep. Obstructive Apnoea results when 

the airways collapse or are obstructed during sleep. 

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT? 

Depending on the cause and the severity of the condition, sleep 

apnoea can be treated using non-surgical or surgical methods. 

Dr Amjad Malik encourages people who snore to attend a free 

initial consultation. Having identified their particular problem, he 

is able to offer a number of solutions. In 

many cases, a simple and effective method 

is a snore guard. This is a mouth piece designed 

to allow the lower jaw to be thrust forward 

so the tongue does not fall back and 

obstruct the airway during sleep. These are 

custom-made for a perfect fit – superior to 

any ready-made ones. 

DO ONLY ADULTS SNORE? 

It is rare for children to snore (and can be 

a cause for particular concern), but Dr 

Malik has successfully treated children, and 

believes there are advantages in treating a 

person while they are still growing. In children 

and in adults, the cause of snoring can 

be the relationship between the shape of 

the palate and the size and position of the 

tongue, which obstructs the breathing during 

sleep. This can often be remedied with 

orthodontic treatment to realign the upper 

arch of teeth to give the tongue more 

room, so it lies in a better position.

We need to talk 

Counselling and psychotherapy training institute TA East will host 

a listening post at Wanstead Library this month. Victoria Baskerville 

explains what it means to be truly listened to 

We all need to talk, be listened to 

and be in contact with each other, 

to thrive in the world. “Listening is 

about being present, not just about being 

quiet.” Krista Tippett, Becoming Wise, 2016. 

In contemporary society, we often don’t have 

or take the time to stop and listen to the birds 

sing, to hear children’s laughter, or to look up 

from our phones and really listen and hear 

each other. 

There have been moments in both my 

personal and professional life which I can 

pinpoint being truly listened to, heard and 

understood. Sometimes, these have been 

chance meetings with strangers, yet I have 

come away feeling ‘met’. 

Carl Rogers, a pioneer of humanistic theory, 

explored ‘listening’ in his early work. From 

his findings, he surmised that when we truly 

listen, we hear a deeper narrative underneath. 

He talked passionately about the power of 

listening as a way of understanding relational 

dynamics with self and others, and a way to 

make personal change. 

As a psychotherapist, I have worked with 

many clients who don’t feel listened to, 

resulting in low self-esteem and negative 

patterns. Yet, I have been deeply moved by 

the power of listening in the consulting room, 

resulting in a profound quality of relationship. 

Rogers described a special way of being and 

listening, that to truly listen and hear the 

other, we need to enter into the other’s world. 

He coined this idea as ‘empathy’, the ability to 

share someone else’s feelings or experiences 

by imagining what it would be like to be in 

that person’s situation; a theory that has been 

embraced by many other psychotherapists. 

TA East is a counselling and psychotherapy 

training institute. The training is delivered in 

the spirit that all people are OK, everyone has 

the capacity to reach their full potential and all 

people can change. And we are now inviting 

the Redbridge community to come along 

and be listened to, heard and understood by 

another, demonstrating the value of empathy 

and being listened to. Sessions will last for 

30 minutes. These will not be counselling 

sessions, though they will be facilitated 

by trained and trainee counsellors and 

psychotherapists.

Most parents living apart will have arrangements for child access. 

But what happens when one wants to move abroad with the child? 

Jonathan Diamond, a partner at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, reports 

If and when this situation arises, it is 

important to understand your legal 

rights and what options you have to 

object if you do not feel comfortable with 

the proposed move. 

The first thing to know is that it is illegal 

to take a child abroad without the express 

permission of the other parent who has 

joint parental responsibility. Doing so is 

considered to be ‘abduction’, which is a serious 

crime. 

Equally, if your child has been made subject 

to a Children Act Order – for example, a family 

court judge has ruled that your child should 

live with their mother every other weekend – 

it is necessary to first obtain permission from 

the courts to change this arrangement. 

This means that if you have joint parental 

responsibility for your child or a Children Act 

Order is in place, your case will have more 

weight if you decide to object to your child 

moving abroad. 

If the matter goes to court, a judge may rule in 

your favour, which means you can prevent the 

move from going ahead. If the court decides 

to allow your child to move abroad with your 

ex-partner, the judge may lay down terms of 

how your child’s care arrangements should 

be split. For example, a judge may state the 

child should be allowed to return to spend the 

summer or Christmas holidays with you. This 

court order is known as a ‘relocation order’ or 

‘leave to remove’. 

Before issuing court proceedings, it is worth 

speaking to a solicitor who is an expert 

in family and childcare matters. They may 

be able to offer one-on-one mediation 

sessions with your former partner, which can 

sometimes be cheaper and less stressful than 

asking the courts to rule on the matter. 

If you cannot reach a mutual agreement, 

your solicitor may advise taking your case to 

court, providing you have a strong argument 

to object. For example, your child may have 

a close network of friends and family here 

in the UK and moving them would severely 

disrupt their upbringing and cause them great 

emotional distress. 

Be aware that the court may wish to hear from 

your child in person, which could also be a 

traumatic experience for all concerned. 

The country your ex-partner intends to 

move to can also be important to your legal 

argument. For example, it might be argued 

that an EU country – which has signed up to 

recognise European family law treaties – is a 

safer destination than one outside of the EU. 

This is because an EU court will recognise a 

UK court order and help enforce it. However, 

this may change once the UK leaves the EU. 

Exactly how is yet to be seen.

Francis Castro, senior nature conservation ranger for Vision RCL, is keen 

to champion the Roding Valley and invites you to join him for a 

late summer walk through this local hidden gem.

The Roding Valley is 

one of the hidden 

gems of east London, 

part of the area’s industrial 

landscape but also retaining some 

of its rural charm. It is a great way to 

explore the borough and for those looking 

for a more rural getaway. 

The Nature Conservation Ranger Team, part 

of the Parks Team for Vision RCL, have a walk 

scheduled for 7 September, which will be 

our longest walk yet, completing the trilogy 

of Roding Valley guided walks we have held 

throughout the year. It will take in the entirety 

of the Roding Valley through Redbridge, as we 

make our way to Wanstead Park, starting from 

Ray Park in Woodford Green. Totalling around 

7km each way, we will be travelling along one 

of the great assets the borough has in terms 

of a green corridor, one that maybe not too 

many people know about. 

The aim of our walks has been to showcase 

the value of the Roding Valley in terms of a 

walking route and for its connection with 

other green spaces. 

As a dog owner and keen walker who lives 

locally in the borough, finding nice walking 

routes in and around the Roding Valley has 

been something I have been doing for many 

years, not only to keep my dog fit but also 

myself, physically and mentally. 

The Roding Valley is largely what we term 

a country park and wild space. This does 

not mean we do not manage it, but its 

management is geared towards wildlife and 

protecting the naturalness and wildness 

experience, which is what we want visitors 

to this type of green space to take away with 

them. It is not easy, especially with the M11 

and A406 roads thundering right through 

it (it has taken many years, but I seem to be 

immune from the hum of the motorway), but 

somehow the Roding Valley and the River 

Roding have persevered from what has been, 

quite recently, disastrous disturbance and 

destruction, through the passion and action of 

those who have and are managing it, as well 

as committed local volunteers and residents. 

It will never be the same or have the same 

value for wildlife and people as before the 

motorway came through. Some people will 

even remember the area before the M11 and 

A406 and how rural the Roding Valley used 

to be and the meanders the river used to 

have. However, this does not mean it has no

value. Indeed, we must do 

the upmost to protect what we 

have and make it better. 

We still have regular 

sightings of kingfishers and 

little egrets along the river; 

grey wagtails can sometimes 

be seen using the river as 

well. The valley is also home 

to many small mammals, 

from weasels and water 

shrews to badgers, 

with other creatures 

of interest including 

stag beetles and grass 

snakes, which you 

can sometimes spot 

while walking the paths. 

On the river, you may get 

lucky and spot a juvenile otter 

that has strayed south from 

its breeding grounds further 

north in Essex. Unfortunately, 

the habitat quality means 

that, at the moment, we have 

not recorded otter being 

able to breed or survive 

along our stretch of river. Eels 

can sometimes be spotted in 

the water too – the River Roding 

used to be a good place to see 

them – however, their decline has 

been noted.

Our walks are put together to help improve 

local knowledge of this hidden and not so well 

known wild space, and to inspire its continued 

use, protection and the ways we can make 

it better for the future. We look forward to 

seeing you on one of our walks soon. 

The Roding Valley late summer walk 

will depart from the James Leal Centre 

in Ray Park, Woodford Green at 9am on 

7 September (free; booking required). The 

walk will last approximately five hours and 

is suitable for children aged seven and 

over. Some paths will be unsuitable for

As the children head back to school, accountancy examiner and 

Wanstead resident Steve Wilks offers his advice for preparing for the 

next season of exams 

The summer holidays are over; the 

nights are drawing in and a new term 

is starting. For many of Wanstead’s 

students, this means embarking on 

final year exams, whether at GCSE or 

A level. This will determine a student’s 

university choices and ultimate career 

path. Examinations are the traditional 

way of assessing this, and it is essential 

students develop a good exam technique 

to maximise the best result possible. 

It is important to familiarise yourself with 

the examination requirements – whether 

it’s multiple choice questions, short form 

structured questions or essay writing – and 

how these will be assessed. It is also essential 

to pay attention to the mark allocation for a 

question. Clearly, an answer worth 10 marks 

will often require a longer, more detailed 

response than a one- or two-mark answer. 

Often, small marked allocation questions are 

marked on a penny points’ system, so a twomark 

question will require two points or one 

point well explained – the further explanation 

being worth a mark. Use the mark allocation 

as a guide to tailor your response. 

With essay-style questions, there is usually 

a bit more flexibility and often answers are 

marked on a “levels of response” basis to 

reward a level of thinking. This differs between 

examination boards, but generally speaking, 

listing and explaining points score marks at 

the lower levels, with further analysis (perhaps 

with an example and synthesis showing how 

the points relate to each other) scoring much 

higher marks. At the top of the spectrum 

of answers, if a candidate can evaluate an 

answer, this will often score the most marks 

of all as it demonstrates there has been a 

balanced assessment of a topic. Remember, 

in essay-based questions, an answer is rarely 

black or white, it is often a shade of grey, and 

candidates who reflect this will score highly. 

Reading widely also helps, particularly 

in the topical social science subjects. 

Examiners often set questions based on 

stimulus 18 months before the real exam 

where relevant. Therefore, you may come to 

familiarise yourself with the subject matter 

already from wider knowledge, which may 

give you an advantage over other students. 

It is also important to note that in numerical 

subjects, such as accountancy, marks are 

awarded for principles as well as the number 

itself. Often, calculations will involve a process 

a candidate needs to go through to arrive

HeAling HeArts 

A local resident who wishes to remain anonymous explains how 

she was helped by the Healing Hearts Bereavement Support Group 

following the death of her husband 

I 

am a resident of Wanstead. I lost my 

husband four years ago after more than 

50 years of marriage, which, as you can 

imagine, was a big shock. My GP suggested 

I go for therapy, which I agreed to, but soon 

realised it was not for me, especially as the 

therapist, although very nice, was a young 

man who I thought didn’t really have any 

idea of what I was going through. 

What I wanted was to meet people in the 

same situation as me and so I asked the 

therapist if he knew of any such groups. He 

said he would look for me and at the next 

session told me about a group in Wanstead 

that met once a month. I started going 

there and through this group I found out 

about Healing Hearts. They meet every 

four to five weeks at Spire London East 

Hospital in Redbridge in the evening, which 

suited me better. Three years on and I am still 

going. 

It is a lovely group with like-minded people 

and it really has been a lifeline for me. In 

addition to the meetings, we also go out for 

a meal once a month. Although it is quite 

a large group, we are always looking to 

welcome new members, so if you are going 

through a bereavement, why not come along? 

I am sure you will find it helpful. 

The group was started by Pat Peake MBE 

and Mary Casey in 2000 and has now been 

running continuously for 19 years. In 2000, Pat 

had just lost her husband, who had suffered 

with cancer, and found that the emotional 

support she was offered in the community 

was ineffectual; it did not meet her needs. She 

felt one-to-one counselling was unhelpful, 

as the other person (counsellor) had not lost 

their partner, so how could they hope to know 

what Pat was feeling? She did look for other

help but there was nothing available at the 

time. Pat had also had cancer at the same time 

as her husband and felt a sense of guilt that 

she survived. He was her soul mate and she 

still misses him every day. 

Mary was an oncology nurse and had to deal 

with death frequently. She knew her patients 

and their families very well while under her 

care and then a patient died… There was no 

follow-up, and after the death certificate was 

given to the family, they were left to try and 

get on with their lives. This seemed to Mary to 

“leave an unfinished chapter”. How could the 

caring and support stop? 

Death is an important part of life. It is a painful 

– but unavoidable – experience. Although 

grief is always the penalty for loving someone, 

it can give us the opportunity to move on with 

greater insight and understanding once grief 

has started to resolve.

The island flower bed outside Wanstead Station is looking somewhat 

neglected and doesn’t live up to the Wanstead Community Gardeners’ 

usual high standards. It’s a work in progress, reassures Marian Temple 

The island bed between The George 

pub and Wanstead Station has been 

looking rather desolate for some 

time. An old water tank with ‘Wanstead 

Community Gardeners’ on it announces 

that it is one of our patches, but it has 

caused us problems since we took it over 

about three years ago. 

The soil is very poor, dry and stony, not 

really a problem but the couch grass is and 

threatens to overrun the area. Our councillors 

suggested we could apply for a Community 

Infrastructure Levy (CIL) grant to have some 

preparatory work done to give us a more 

level playing field, something we could 

cope with. 

CIL grants come from developers who pay 

the council for infrastructure their new 

development might cause to be needed 

(such as helping to pay for schools, leisure 

centres, healthcare facilities and transport 

schemes). A percentage of this goes to local 

group projects for the improvement of the 

area. What we needed fitted in perfectly with 

this. We applied for the grant (a lot of hoopjumping) 

and were successful as anticipated. 

We have been improving Wanstead since 

2003, starting with the Corner House garden, 

and have never asked for anything in the way 

of funding. 

With advice from Simon Litt of Valentines 

Mansion gardens and others, we decided 

to go for a wildflower meadow in the open 

part, which is our patch. In the meantime, 

the council had all the shrubs cut down 

in the long neck towards the traffic 

lights. This for reasons of impeding drivers’ 

sight lines. If we can get them to remove 

all the roots, we can include the neck in 

our project. 

We hope to create a wildflower meadow, 

which would make a wonderful entrance 

into Wanstead. Drivers already enjoy our 

drivers’ beds as they wait at the traffic lights. 

Meadow plants can cope with poor, dry, 

stony soil, and while not being maintenance 

free, we should be able to cope with this. 

Keeping the drivers’ sight lines free will be an 

important consideration regarding the height 

of plants. 

We are not sure what the timing will be for all 

this. It might very well be 2020 before this ugly 

duckling becomes a swan and delights all who 

see it, whether on foot or in cars. This is indeed 

a work in progress. 

It’s been a long journey for your community 

gardeners, but we have great hopes for this 

rather sad patch of public soil.

Face painter and mixed media artist Victoria Senett 

– who works under the name Vickleart – will be 

taking part in this month’s Art Trail Wanstead. 

Here, the Wanstead resident explains her love 

of making things 

I’ve been face painting at parties, 

events, local markets and community 

fairs for several years and I really enjoy 

the variety it brings. I love face painting 

as there is so much colour and pattern 

involved; it feels such a creative form of 

art. Each face is different, and you need to 

work quickly without being too precious so 

it remains spontaneous. It’s great having 

little chats with the children and lovely 

seeing their happy faces when they see the 

transformation. 

I studied textile design and have always 

loved art and making things, using all kinds 

of media and techniques: painting, sewing, 

paper, photography, often combining all

elements 

to create 

a collage. 

This way of 

working feels 

very natural 

to me as I love 

cutting, sticking 

and putting shapes, 

patterns and colours 

together. A lot of my 

inspiration comes from 

growing to love everyday 

places and scenes that become 

familiar and beautiful. Colour is 

probably the thing I’m most drawn 

to and which makes me feel happy. 

I have exhibited at Art Trail Wanstead 

before – it is such a great community 

event – and also at The Stow Brothers. 

My grandpa had an upholstery shop where I 

spent lots of time as a child making buttons 

and watching him reupholster furniture. My 

mum has always sewed, making curtains and 

dress alterations, so fabric and sewing has 

long been a big part of my life. My dad had 

a jewellery shop. We often went to markets 

together looking for interesting pieces, as well 

as visiting workshops to collect repairs. I was 

fascinated by all the wonderful, quirky and 

talented craftspeople I met. 

Hungamunga is an arts collective myself 

and some friends started where we combine 

our skills and passion for music, art and 

performance. We have put on art and music 

events at venues and festivals where people 

of all ages can come and make stuff whilst 

listening to music. 

I moved to the Wanstead area about eight 

years ago, and although I grew up quite near, 

I’d never explored it. I have really enjoyed 

discovering all the wonderful things about it 

with the great community it has. It has been 

a great place for me and my young children 

and has a lovely community of artists and 

craftspeople.

could he chew his food properly which

picturesque parts of London. We champion the conservation of our area’s heritage, and work to promote 

Wanstead and neighbouring Snaresbrook wherever possible.

Why are implants better than other solutions? 

– Because they are fixed into your jaw, just as 

natural teeth are. Alternative solutions are 

removable dentures, which can be embarrassing, 

and unromantic, or bridges, for which good 

teeth either side of the gap have to be damaged.

Play Reading Group 

Have you ever wanted to act but not had the time to 

take part in a play? Then come along to this group which 

wi l read aloud a chosen play, each participant reading 

a variety of characters and there’s no need to prepare in 

advance. The play for this session wi l have LGBT+ themes. 

How long do implants last? 

– There is no limit but like natural teeth, they 

need maintenance and servicing. The mouth is a 

dynamic machine: teeth and implants undergo 

strong mechanical forces, so regular checkups and 

hygiene visits are a must, as with natural teeth.

The Wanstead Society is a group of volunteers dedicated to protecting and enhancing one of the most 

picturesque parts of London. We champion the conservation of our area’s heritage, and work to promote 

Wanstead and neighbouring Snaresbrook wherever possible. 

The Wanstead Society is a non-political organisation seeking to help our area by building constructive 

working relationships with those in power. 

Our main aims are to: 

• Work with the Council and planners to protect and enhance the character of Wanstead 

Wanstead is a lovely 

neighbourhood – 

• Encourage, support and promote the viability of the High Street and the 

local community 

• Take part in the Wanstead Festival and care for the Corner House Garden 

• Liaise with and lobby Councillors, GLA Members and MPs 

• Support local businesses
