profoundly painful I still grieved them. Had God used those
things in my life?
Psalm 139:16 says, “All the days ordained for me were written
in your book before one of them came to be.” God knew on the
day of my birth everything there would ever be to know about
me. He knew long before I learned how to break a rule and
lie about it that I was going to do so. When I think about his
“book” recording all my days, I wished I could either rewrite or
omit a few chapters. The truth that overwhelms me, however, is
that God the Father knew in the very beginning of my life what
every single day would hold. Nothing catches God by surprise.
Our vision may be clouded at times, but God’s never is. You
know, I have lived through enough crises to believe that truth
wholeheartedly. God always has the right plan in mind. I find
that thought comforting.
If you can believe that He has a master plan for each of us,
you might want to pay attention to every side road and detour
in your journey. Every road connects to the next road. Every
path leads to the one after it. Nothing is random.
When I look back over almost seven decades of life, I see
clearly that the road from birth to this point had few straight
lines. I imagine if my journey was a map, there would even be
a few roads that seemed to go in circles. I see now that every
point along the way had purpose although I did not always see
that purpose at the time.
A prime example of God’s design in the middle of something
that did not even register as significant in the moment is the
evolution of my writing career.
