MATTIE KELLY ARTS FOUNDATION
ANNUAL REPORT
2018
WHO IS “MATTIE KELLY
ARTS FOUNDATION”?
The Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) is a
501-c-3 not-for-profit cultural and educational
organization serving Okaloosa and Walton counties
since 1995. For 23 years, MKAF has been supporting
our local community with award winning Outreach
programming impacting over 330,000 lives in over
71 schools and agencies serving students, adults and
children with special needs and the wounded veteran
population. MKAF is also the owner and operator of
the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village, located in the
heart of Destin, where local, regional, national and
international artistic talent have come to perform.
Our board of directors continue to pursue the
legacy of the late Destin Matriarch’s dream to create
a cultural and educational environment to make
a greater impact to those who lack access to the
arts and our cultural savvy residents and travelers
through empowering outreach initiatives and public
programming.
Through MKAF’s signature annual events, Concerts
in the Village and the Festival of the Arts; which
bring art enrichment to our community’s residents
and tourists, we are able to help fund MKAF’s
Community Outreach programs. Serving multiple
populations (K-12 students, at-risk youth, adults
and children with special needs and active/
veteran military suffering with visible and invisible
injuries through curated programs at no cost to the
recipients) MKAF Community Outreach serves more
people than any other programming in the area.
“Upon permanently relocating to the Destin
area, we searched for a local non-profit that our
family could engage and provide philanthropic
support to their mission and vision. We
immediately engaged in the Mattie Kelly
Arts Foundation for its cultural vision and
community outreach programs serving those less
fortunate in gaining access to the arts.”
—Richard and Shawn Tomasello, MKAF Investors
The Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation is often confused
with Northwest Florida Stage College’s Mattie Kelly
Arts Center. However, the two are not affiliated in
any way other than a shared benefactor name.
Empower
The heartbeat of the foundation is MKAF’s Community Outreach program---providing inclusive arts
education programs for children and adults of diverse abilities and backgrounds. MKAF bridges the gap to
those who either lack access to the arts or could uniquely benefit from them. An array of high-quality visual
and performing arts programs are thoughtfully curated to serve K-12 students, children and adults with
special needs, at-risk youth, and veteran and active duty warriors with both visible and invisible injuries.
“As a 23-year veteran, with 14 combat developments, adapting back into the civilian world can be
difficult and stressful for both the member and family. The “Zentangle” art technique that Miss Melanie
introduced has helped me both focus and obtain an inner calmness. I now enjoy sharing the meditative
process with my 10-year old daughter.”
—A Special Operations Veteran
Since 1995, these outreach programs have inspired over 330,000 children and adults in over 71 schools and
partner agencies in Okaloosa and Walton Counties. We offer a comprehensive model of artist residencies,
hands-on workshops, and public education events featuring music, theatre, and the visual arts.
Through diverse outreach initiatives, MKAF truly draws out the best in people of all ages and abilities,
providing inspiring opportunities in the arts! Programs are offered free of charge to participants, made
possible by grants, private and corporate gifts; and supported by MKAF event income.
4
Inspire
MKAF is committed to providing
experiential arts programs to people of
all abilities. In 2018, MKAF instituted
a landmark week-long artist residency
featuring adaptive arts experiences with
Kevin Spencer of Hocus Focus Education –
internationally recognized as the authority
on adaptive magic. Spencer visited over
20 local school and community groups
serving people with special needs, teaching
them magic tricks that empowered them
to be both critical thinkers and empowered
performers!
“Mr. Spencer’s Hocus Focus Magic
Show is a true example of the power of
school and community partnerships.”
—Jason Campbell, Principal,
Walton Middle School
Capability Over Disability
All people have the innate ability and
capability to partake in the artistic
process. As part of our Arts for All
Abilities initiative, we connect nationally
acclaimed artist facilitators, known for
their groundbreaking work in adaptive
arts, with schools and non-profit partner
agencies serving children and adults with
special needs. These individuals are given
the opportunity to learn painting, music,
magic and more---regardless of any physical
or cognitive challenges---and experience the
inherent joys of creativity.
In addition, MKAF deploys a winning
combination of programs with therapeutic
benefits that are much-requested by our
school and charity partners. Participants
also “Make Music” with Hands on With
Zig: interactive drumming and world music
workshops where all become part of the
musical ensemble (as depicted). In addition,
another blockbuster artist residency enabled
individuals to “Make their Mark” with Zot
Artz: inventor of the first ever painting
wheelchair and adaptive art tools---to create
collaborative murals and other artworks.
“The level of inclusion, support and sheer
awesomeness has inspired some of our
young adults to further their musical
creativity well past the time of the
program by writing music and songs.”
—Rand Fernandez, Board of Directors,
Autism Spectrum on the Emerald Coast
The Florida Travel Guide named The Concerts
in the Village as one of the “Top Ten Things
to Do” in Northwest Florida. The Foundation
presents 15 annual concerts in a spring, summer
and fall series featuring a diverse genre of music
suitable for all ages and families spanning
four generations. National, regional and local
musicians perform annually on the Dugas Stage.
“The Concerts in the Village is a muchanticipated
cultural community event for its
residents and visitors, uniting families for
an evening of great fun, dancing, networking
and music whether it is your favorite oldie or
today’s top hits from talented musicians.”
—Jackie Ely, MKAF Advocate & Patron.
The Festival of the Arts, one of the Southeast’s
premier art festivals showcases over 100 premier
artists from the United States and Europe. Artists
compete for $10,000 in cash awards representing
18 different mediums in an outdoor walking
exhibit production. Additional amenities include
live music, a food bistro, wine and beer garden,
adult/student collaborative art exhibit and art
activities for kids.
“I have participated in a handful of other
events and none hold a candle to MKAF’s
Festival of the Arts! The quality of this event
is the result of the entire Festival team’s hard
work and attention to detail and hospitality.
—Ken Radon, Acrylic Artist, Niceville, FL
“WOW and WOW! The Mattie Kelly Festival
of the Arts staff and volunteers work hard
with an impressive marketing and promotional
campaign across the region. The open-air
park setting is fabulous, great music, food and
wonderful art!
—Julie Juneau, Glass Artist, New Orleans, LA
THE KELLY LEGACY –
A DESTIN PIONEER FAMILY
In the mid 1930s, Mattie and her husband,
Coleman Kelly, migrated to Destin from
Washington County. The Kellys employed
one of Destin’s first significant payrolls and
built the first tourist cottages along the
Destin Harbor. In addition, they launched
the first commercial deep-sea fishing party
boat in Northwest Florida.
Mattie Kelly’s overwhelming drive to
improve the quality of life for all citizens
and visitors knew no political, social, or
religious boundaries. She pursued dreams
that brought not only progress to Destin, but
spiritual, cultural and educational vitality
that Destin still embraces today.
