Born and raised in
Southern Louisiana,
Kelly Pierre’s passion
for arts sparked at a
young age. As a child,
Pierre spent a lot of
his time sketching marine life from the deck of
his family’s shrimping boat. He uses multiple
mediums, oils, acrylics, clay, wood, and metal
because Pierre believes that working with just
one media is restrictive to his artistic process and
prefers to allow each
idea to manifest on
its own. Pierre’s studio
is located on the
HarborWalk Village
in Destin where he
finds inspiration in the
wildlife and beauty of
the local Gulf.
“People come here
from everywhere, they
come here for the
water and it is what
attracts everybody. The
beautiful sand and the
water. I think the vibe
here is awesome and
they want to take that
home with them. “
“There’s a universal
appeal to George
Rodrigue’s art that gets
inside one’s soul. You
don’t just see it —you
FEEL it.”
Join award-winning
public speaker, author,
and art historian,
Wendy Rodrigue, in an
exclusive special exhibit
honoring the work of
George Rodrigue (1944-
2013). A native of Fort
Walton Beach, Wendy’s
life’s work, since 1991,
has been to share her
late husband’s life and
art in as quality and
broad a manner as
possible. George and Wendy partnered on the
development of all aspects of his career and
life, including his galleries, museum exhibitions,
a dozen books published both nationally
and internationally on his art, and extensive
education outreach. Wendy now continues
this tradition with Life & Legacy, honoring one
of America’s most important artists, George
Rodrigue.
This outreach program explores the evolution
of Rodrigue’s work and the processes behind it.
Each piece tells a story — a reaction to current
events, a state of mind, the past, the present, the
future, or love. Within each piece can be found
common elements — the distinctive Rodrigue
Oak, the Cajun people, their culture glowing
from within, the Blue Dog, staring straight at the
viewer, asking the questions, “Why are we here?”
“What does it all mean?” There are swirls, flowers,
suns, butterflies, and even hurricanes.
Inspiring individuals of all ages and backgrounds
with the life and art of George Rodrigue, the
Life & Legacy program expands upon his vision
by showing how one person can overcome
obstacles to achieve their dreams, while also
making a positive difference in the world —in
Special Exhibit
Wendy Rodrigue inspires children of all ages with the life and art of George Rodrigue
this case, through the
transformative potential
of art. Projects include
museum exhibitions,
education initiatives, an
ongoing public lecture
series, and written and
online publications.
Since founding the Life
& Legacy Tour in 2017,
Wendy Rodrigue has
visited more than 80
schools and exposed,
personally, Rodrigue’s
life and art to more than
35,000 students and
teachers throughout
Louisiana, Oklahoma,
Florida, California, Texas
and Mississippi. In
addition, her lectures at museums, universities,
and community groups remain standing room
only, as she shares personal stories and original
paintings from her late husband’s private
collection.
George and Wendy enjoyed a long partnership
with MKAF. Together they brought unique art
experiences to many Florida Panhandle schools
---a form of outreach that Wendy continues
today. MKAF is pleased to bring this special Life
& Legacy programming with Wendy Rodrigue to
schools in Okaloosa and Walton counties this fall.
In addition to being headquartered with original
George Rodrigue paintings in the Special Exhibit
space on the first row of the festival grounds,
Wendy will be making special appearances at
the ArtStop, serving up storytelling for kids of all
ages!
“Sixty years later I still paint the way I felt as a
child. I emphasize to students how important it
is to retain that innocence, and that it’s okay to
create art in this way.” ~George Rodrigue
MEET THE JUDGES
MATTIE CODLING
Director of
Collections & Exhibitions
Walter Anderson
Museum of Art
Mattie Codling is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Walter
Anderson Museum of Art (WAMA) in Ocean Springs, MS. She has been
a part of the WAMA staff since April 2016. Codling is responsible for
exhibition research, development, and installation, as well as the care
and promotion of the Museum’s permanent collection.
Codling completed her undergraduate work at The University of
Mississippi where she double majored in Art History and Anthropology.
She received her Master’s degree in Art History from Florida State
University with a specialization in Museum Studies.
Codling specializes in Southern art, architecture, and the material culture
of the African Diaspora. She has participated in several archaeological
digs, including the Carson Burial Mounds located outside of Clarksdale,
MS. Codling has also completed several field studies of African Diasporic
cemeteries in the Southeast.
Contemporary art and the exploration of modernity through alternative
media are particularly intriguing for Codling. She has participated in
numerous exhibitions of contemporary art and enjoys being introduced
to new artists’ work that challenges viewers. A Southerner by birth,
Codling is drawn to artwork that pulls from the region’s rich legacy yet
confronts it through new means of interpretation. “The state of Southern
art is changing,” states Codling, “it is exciting to be a part of this creative
surge that is deeply rooted in our culture.”
Codling has worked in the museum field for eight years. Her passion lies
in uncovering the past through contemporary modes of exposition. Her
present work revolves around the art and legacy of American master,
Walter Inglis Anderson.
DARLENE
