MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. 

Martin Luther King, Jr., an American clergyman and Nobel Prize winner was 

one of the principal leaders of the American civil rights movement and a 

prominent advocate of nonviolent protest. King’s challenges to segregation 

and racial discrimination in the 1950s and 1960s helped convince many white 

Americans to support the cause of civil rights in the United States. After his 

assassination in 1968, King became a symbol of protest in the struggle for 

racial justice.

King, Jr. 

In 1957, King helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference 

(SCLC), an organization of black churches and ministers that aimed 

to challenge racial segregation. As SCLC’s president, King became the 

organization’s dominate personality and its primary intellectual influence. 

He was responsible for much of the organization’s fundraising, which 

he frequently conducted in conjunction with preaching engagements in 

Northern churches. SCLC sought to complement the NAACP’s legal efforts to 

dismantle segregation through the courts, with King and other SCLC leaders 

encouraging the use of nonviolent direct action to protest discrimination. 

These activities included marches, demonstrations and boycotts. 

“I Have a Dream” 

King and other black leaders organized the 1963 March on Washington, 

a massive protest in Washington, D.C. for jobs and civil rights. On August 

28, 1963, King delivered the keynote address to an audience of more than 

200,000 civil rights supporters. His “I Have a Dream” speech expressed the 

hopes of the civil rights movement in oratory as moving as any in American 

history. 

After his death, King came to represent black courage and achievement, high 

moral leadership and the ability of Americans to address and overcome racial 

divisions. Perhaps the most important memorial is the national holiday in 

King’s honor, designated by the Congress of the United States in 1983 and 

observed on the third Monday in January, a day that falls on or near King’s 

birthday of January 15 th .

Inspection Drives 

Spectrum Association Management started conducting inspection drives 

in September. 

Your Site Manager will be enforcing the deed restrictions provided in your 

governing documents. Please remember this includes regular mowing 

and maintenance of yards and flowerbeds, mold removal from siding and 

keeping your lot free of clutter. Please also remember, to remove your 

trash can for storage out of public view after trash collection. In addition to 

inspections, The Board is considering a yard of the month program which 

will be formally announced before its inception. If you have additional 

questions, all governing documents can be found at SpectrumAM.com 

under the tab community info and documents. Your Spectrum Site

should have a 6-digit number on it. When reporting the light, you will 

need to provide the pole number and closest intersection or address. We 

want all our lights to work… a well lit area is a safe area!

Lost Pets, etc., please make sure you remove them in a timely manner.

As a reminder, the Association has a patrol contract through Harris 

County Precinct 5 Constable. We share 40 hours of patrol per week 

at random times with Aberdeen Trail HOA. Please add the following

Feel Cozy And Embrace You 

With Warmth During 

The Winter Months 

Candles and warm colors can make you feel cozy inside when the 

weather outside turns cold and dreary. Here are nine ways you 

can make your home feel more cozy: 

• Add warm colors. Whether you paint your walls a sun-kissed 

gold, cover a sofa with a warm-toned slipcover or simply add 

pillows or a throw blanket in a “hot” shade, you can quickly make 

a room look brighter and feel cozier with the right color. 

• Play with texture. Plush upholstery and flannel bedding can 

provide your home with a soft, relaxing touch. To make texture 

interesting, introduce a variety: Choose a throw blanket with an 

open weave, such as chenille, for a twill sofa with a tight, smooth 

weave. The contrast provides richness and warmth. 

• Illuminate “feel good” objects. Lighting shoos away winter’s 

shadows, but it can also cast our focus on fair-weather days. By 

placing artful groupings of mementos and photographs beneath 

a lamp on an end table, you can draw attention to objects you 

love and memories that warm your heart. 

• Bring the outdoors in. Plants and fresh flowers can breathe 

life into your home - actually imparting oxygen into the air - and 

remind you of gentler days. For a unique twist on floral arranging, 

use a small birdbath as your “vase.” People are always looking for 

pedestals for their large vases. A birdbath is both. For an elegant 

wintertime arrangement, set a large candle in the bath’s waterfilled 

center, place quince around the candle’s base (they provide 

a mild citrusy scent) and incorporate late-season hydrangeas 

(they’re green) and berry-laden branches. Place in a quiet corner, 

in a foyer or bathroom. 

• Work on spatial relationships. The sizes and shapes of your 

furnishings are important - variety adds interest. And this time 

of year more than any other, how you arrange these pieces is 

important, too. As a holiday hostess or host, you need to be able 

to see, talk to and reach your guests. For optimal coziness, create 

conversation groupings by moving furnishings closer together - a 

guest needing to rise to place a mug on a coffee table is a no-no. 

• Get yourself a comfy chair. A large, comfy chair to land in at 

the end of the day is the ultimate refuge from the cold world. 

Choose one with a high back and an inherent sense of softness 

about the upholstery for visual warmth and comfortable seating 

is recommended. Create the full “chair ensemble” with a standing 

lamp and end table and set the grouping in an intimate corner. 

• Cover your “ground.” Nothing warms up a bare floor quicker 

than an area rug. Don’t underestimate the visual warmth it 

provides as well, especially in sunburst tones. Also, the pile in 

some Indian and Pakistani rugs made using vegetable dyes gives 

you the option of making them look even “warmer.” From one 

angle, the colors look muted and soft, from another, they appear 

deeper and brighter. Choose the brighter angle for added winter 

warmth. 

• Light a candle. This literal spark of warmth works in any decor 

and in any room. Added visual warmth and design cachet can be 

achieved by placing candles in hurricane lamps made of ambertoned 

glass or in a grouping of holders that look like woven vines. 

• Alter your senses - with scents. Colorful, multi-textured 

potpourri - a mixture of scented preserved leaves, nuts, fruit 

slices, seedpods and pinecones – artfully arranged in a favorite 

bowl provides a vibrant focal point on a coffee or end table and 

enlivens a room with a pleasant aroma to lighten spirits and 

freshen the air. The natural aromas of fresh flowers, even the 

less heady varieties, for their soft, understated scents with the 

promise of warmer days to come, is a favorite.

CFISD Board Approves 2019-2020 

Instructional Calendar 

The CFISD Board of Trustees approved the calendar committee’s 

recommendations for the 2019-2020 instructional calendar during its 

regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, December 10 th .

House Bill 1 (79 th Texas Legislature) mandates that instruction for the 

school year may not begin before the fourth Monday in August. For the 

2019-2020 instructional year, the earliest start date is August 26 th - which

In the fall semester of 2017, a calendar committee was organized to 

develop calendars for both the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years. 

The committee was made up of district-wide representation, including 

teachers, parents, community members, campus administrators and 

support staff. Developing both calendars at the same time allowed the 

school Board to vote on next year’s calendar earlier than in past years. 

The committee worked to construct the calendars using the 75,600 

minutes needed to complete a school year now required by law. 

The committee recommended a calendar to the school board that will 

conclude the 2019-2020 school year on May 28, 2020. 

In its meetings, the committee discussed various components of 

developing the instructional calendars before arriving at a consensus. 

The 2019-2020 calendar recommendation presented to the Board of 

Trustees included: 

Students begin school on Monday, Aug. 26, 2019; 

Labor Day, September 2, 2019, is a student/staff holiday; 

A five-day Thanksgiving holiday (Nov. 25-29, 2019); 

A 10-day winter break (Dec. 23, 2019-Jan. 3, 2020); 

A five-day spring break March 9-13, 2020; 

Good Friday, April 10, 2020, is a student/staff holiday; 

The school year will end on May 28, 2020 for students and February 17 th 

and May 29, 2020 are designated as inclement weather makeup days.

The Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club will celebrate its 32 nd Anniversary 

Season by hosting its annual free Registration/Orientation Breakfast on 

Saturday, February 2, 2019, for all boys and girls who are interested in 

joining for the 2019 track season. The breakfast starts promptly at 8:30 

AM at the Cypress Creek Christian Community Center Forum located at 

6823 Cypresswood Dr., Spring, TX, 77379. The event is an opportunity for 

youth athletes to register for the 2019 spring/summer track season and 

to meet the Northwest Flyers coaches, staff and other new and returning 

athletes. The event will be highlighted by a special presentation from 

a member of the USA Track &Field Olympic organization (USATF). All 

athletes and parents who wish to join the Northwest Flyers must attend 

the orientation before registering. The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a 

youth (ages 6-18) track club, affiliated with USA Track & Field (USATF), 

that provides a full program of sanctioned “track” events such as sprints, 

hurdles, middle distance, distance and relays and sanctioned “field” 

events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put,

SHIELD BEARER RUNNING FOR HEARTS 

5K FAMILY FUN RUN AND WALK 

The Shield Bearer Running for Hearts 5K Family Fun Run and Walk will 

take place on March 30, 2019, from 7 AM to 11 AM, at Windwood Church at 

10555 Spring Cypress Road in Houston, Texas. This family friendly event 

will feature a 5K timed, trail style run, a 1-mile family walk, games for the 

kids, t-shirts, food, prizes and lots of fun for all ages. Race registration is 

$25 for adults (ages 14 and up) and $10 for children (ages 13 and under) 

before March 15, 2019. Registration, sponsorship, vendor, fundraising

Proceeds for the event will fund services and programs at Shield Bearer, 

a Houston based 501c3 nonprofit counseling and community resource 

center that provides services on a sliding scale. Shield Bearer has six

chili competition during the 8 th Annual Houston Kosher Chili Cook-off. 

The event will be held at Congregation Beth Yeshurun, 4525 Beechnut St.,

in Houston and celebrates the fellowship of the Jewish community with

installation created by Cocolab, a Mexico City-based studio

Preparation For Adult Living 

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. 

That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities 

arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure 

out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole 

month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program 

to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). 

The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the 

National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior 

Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local 

businesses.

BANNING OF SALE OF ANIMALS ALONG PUBLIC ROADS 

In 2007, Harris County moved to ban sales of animals along public 

roads and parking lots in unincorporated areas. A violation is a Class C 

misdemeanor which can mean a $500 fine. 

VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION 

(Formerly called Harris County Animal Control) 

The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals found 

on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your pet, 

please check this website, www.hcphes.org/vph. 

Have you lost a pet? 

Start your search immediately, don’t wait to make flyers. 

Contact all possible animal control or animal welfare agencies in the 

area. Visit each location at least every other day. 

Call your pet’s veterinarian and the microchip company to make sure 


they have current contact information for you. A citizen may try to call 

the veterinarian’s office or microchip company themselves from your 

pet’s tags. 

Call all the veterinarians in your area to alert them to the description of 

your lost pet in case someone brings it to their clinic. 

Check with your neighbors, especially families with children and ask if 

they’ve seen a pet that looks like yours. 

Search your neighborhood on foot, your pet maybe be nearby but is 

injured and unable to get back home. 

Leave a towel or article of clothing with your scent on it outside of your 

home. Your pet may be disorientated and will be attracted by your scent. 

Have you found a pet? 

First, think of the animal as lost and not abandoned and make every 

effort to reunite the animal to an owner. 

Contact the HCPH VPH office by telephone and report the animal as 

found. 

Bring the animal to the HCPH VPH facility or check with a local 

veterinarian to scan the animal for a microchip. 

Return to the place where you found the animal and put up a found pet 

poster near that location. 

If you find the owner, especially off a newspaper or website posting, ask 

them to provide a picture of the animal and meet in a public place like a 

police station.

A microchip is a small device (size of a grain of rice) that is permanent 

and implanted with a needle under the skin of pets. 

Pets do not have to be given any pain medication or anesthesia to 

implant a microchip. 

Microchips are not likely to move or need repair if implanted correctly. 

Microchips, when scanned, show a unique code. The microchip must be 

registered with the corresponding microchip manufacture to record any 

owner and animal data. 

Microchips do not work like GPS locators or LoJack and cannot give a 

signal to find the location of your lost pet.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. 

While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone 

who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid 

of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting 

hurt trying to avoid the animal. 

Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal 

Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint 

while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian 

of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed 

dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” 

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following 

circumstances: 

1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in 

length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of 

controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 

2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 

3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not 

have access to sidewalk or street.” 

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or 

play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. 

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all 

our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect 

anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet 

owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing

1 tablespoon baking powder

5 cups all-purpose flour, divided 

1 habanero pepper, finely 

chopped (wear gloves) 

2 cups water, divided 

1/2 teaspoon finely chopped

DIRECTIONS: 

Mix active and quick-rise yeast 

with 3 tablespoons water in a 

bowl to make a paste. Mix 4 cups 

of flour with 1 cup water in a large bowl until thoroughly combined; stir yeast mixture into flour mixture. - Beat 

remaining 1 cup water, baking powder, salt, sharp Cheddar cheese, habanero pepper and rosemary into dough; 

beat remaining 1 cup flour into dough. Turn out onto a floured work surface and knead until dough is soft and 

elastic, at least 6 minutes. Form dough into a ball, place into an oiled bowl and turn the dough around in the bowl 

to pick up a thin coating of oil. Cover bowl and let rise for 2 hours. - Punch the dough down, turn out onto a floured 

work surface and knead for 6 more minutes. Divide dough in half and form each half into a loaf; place loaves on 

a baking sheet. Cover loaves and let rise until doubled, 15 to 20 minutes. - Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 

degrees C). Bake loaves in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce oven heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C)

DIRECTIONS 

Insert wooden sticks into the stem end of each apple. 

Place apples on a cookie sheet covered with lightly greased 

aluminum foil. - Combine caramels and water in a saucepan 

over low heat. Cook, stirring often, until caramel melts and 

is smooth. Stir in the vanilla. Dip each apple into the caramel 

and gently run apples around insides of saucepan to scrape 

off some of the caramel. Scrape excess caramel from the 

apple bottoms using the side of the saucepan. - Spread the 

chopped cookies out on a dinner plate. Roll caramel apples 

in the cookies and place on the aluminum foil. Place the milk 

chocolate and white chocolate into separate microwave-safe 

bowls. Heat in the microwave at 30 second intervals, stirring 

between each, until melted and smooth. Drizzle milk chocolate 

over the apples, then drizzle the white chocolate over the milk 

chocolate. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Gardening Tips 

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY 

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from 

lack of food. 

• Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. 

• Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. 

• Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones 

rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat 

in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter 

into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. 

• Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. 

Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from 

plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. 

• Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage 

to crown. 

• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open 

pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. 

• Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. 

• Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. 

Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and 

below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions 

before spraying. 

• Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs 

in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. 

• Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not 

remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds 

swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and 

others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. 

• Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds 

break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of 

debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. 

• Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, 

both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots 

instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before 

buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar 

cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. 

• Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, 

including rotted manure. 

• Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. 

Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect 

low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather 

warms.
