HONORING MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Martin Luther King, Jr., an American clergyman and Nobel Prize winner was one of the
principal leaders of the American civil rights movement and a prominent advocate of
nonviolent protest. King’s challenges to segregation and racial discrimination in the 1950s
and 1960s helped convince many white Americans to support the cause of civil rights in
the United States. After his assassination in 1968, King became a symbol of protest in the
struggle for racial justice.
In 1957, King helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), an organization
of black churches and ministers that aimed to challenge racial segregation. As
SCLC’s president, King became the organization’s dominate personality and its primary
intellectual influence. He was responsible for much of the organization’s fundraising, which
he frequently conducted in conjunction with preaching engagements in Northern churches.
SCLC sought to complement the NAACP’s legal efforts to dismantle segregation through the
courts, with King and other SCLC leaders encouraging the use of nonviolent direct action to
protest discrimination. These activities included marches, demonstrations and boycotts.
“I Have a Dream”
King and other black leaders organized the 1963 March on Washington, a massive protest
in Washington, D.C. for jobs and civil rights. On August 28, 1963, King delivered the
keynote address to an audience of more than 200,000 civil rights supporters. His “I Have
a Dream” speech expressed the hopes of the civil rights movement in oratory as moving
as any in American history.
After his death, King came to represent black courage and achievement, high moral
leadership and the ability of Americans to address and overcome racial divisions. Perhaps
the most important memorial is the national holiday in King’s honor, designated by the
Congress of the United States in 1983 and observed on the third Monday in January, a
day that falls on or near King’s birthday of January 15 th .
INSPIRING QUOTES FROM MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Martin Luther King, Jr., American Leader, January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968
Martin Luther King Jr.’s words have continued to resonate with audiences, decades later. As the country prepares to observe Martin Luther
King Day on Monday, January 21st, here are some inspiring MLK quotes to remind us of life’s daily challenges and accomplishments:
• “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
• “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy to a friend.”
• “I have decided to stick to love... Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
• “Forgiveness is not an occasional act, it is a constant attitude.”
• “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns
to the broader concerns of all humanity.”
• “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way”
• “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
• “Those who are not looking for happiness are the most likely to find it, because those who are searching forget that the surest way
to be happy is to seek happiness for others.”
MO’ MONEY,
NO PROBLEMS!
STAY DISCIPLINED
WITH YOUR SAVINGS
• Just do it! Pay yourself first!
• Gather all important financially-related documents and receipts to a
central location. File them so you will be able to easily find the items
you need in the future. Consider a computer based financial program
so you can keep track of every dime you spend - financial control is a
special form of power!
• Spending every dime and more? Start by cutting back on a few items
per week and putting away that money. Pay yourself first. Just say no
to spending more than you have.
• Ask for direct deposit at work if they offer it - you’re saving money and
you don’t even see it. A savings plan at work that pays you a “matching
contribution” is the fastest way to save. Pay yourself first!
• Use credit cards responsibly make sure you can make the monthly
payment. Ideally pay the balance off each month. You will never have
a late payment (now as much as $75) and you will never pay interest
to others at the very high rates credit cards charge.
• Financial freedom will be worth everything you put into it.
Don’t want to work forever - choose to save!
TOP SAVING MISTAKES
• Not modifying your spending habits and committing to save money.
• Not taking advantage of your company’s match in a 401k plan or
getting involved in a defined contribution plan.
• Not appropriately/correctly allocating your assets to meet a specific
goal or time horizon (diversification is important).
• Not setting a specific dollar target or financial goal.
• Not knowing how much you have, where you are spending your
money and how much you need to save for the future (failure to plan
for retirement).
• Cashing out your retirement plan - should roll over to an IRA or your
new company’s retirement plan.
NINE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME
FEEL COZY AND EMBRACE YOU WITH
WARMTH DURING THE WINTER MONTHS
Candles and warm colors can make you feel cozy inside when the
weather outside turns cold and dreary. Here are nine ways you can
make your home feel more cozy:
• Add warm colors. Whether you paint your walls a sun-kissed
gold, cover a sofa with a warm-toned slipcover or simply add
pillows or a throw blanket in a “hot” shade, you can quickly make
a room look brighter and feel cozier with the right color.
• Play with texture. Plush upholstery and flannel bedding can
provide your home with a soft, relaxing touch. To make texture
interesting, introduce a variety: Choose a throw blanket with an
open weave, such as chenille, for a twill sofa with a tight, smooth
weave. The contrast provides richness and warmth.
• Illuminate “feel good” objects. Lighting shoos away winter’s
shadows, but it can also cast our focus on fair-weather days. By
placing artful groupings of mementos and photographs beneath a
lamp on an end table, you can draw attention to objects you love
and memories that warm your heart.
• Bring the outdoors in. Plants and fresh flowers can breathe
life into your home - actually imparting oxygen into the air - and
remind you of gentler days. For a unique twist on floral arranging,
use a small birdbath as your “vase.” People are always looking for
pedestals for their large vases. A birdbath is both. For an elegant
wintertime arrangement, set a large candle in the bath’s waterfilled
center, place quince around the candle’s base (they provide
a mild citrusy scent) and incorporate late-season hydrangeas
(they’re green) and berry-laden branches. Place in a quiet corner,
in a foyer or bathroom.
• Work on spatial relationships. The sizes and shapes of your
furnishings are important - variety adds interest. And this time
of year more than any other, how you arrange these pieces is
important, too. As a holiday hostess or host, you need to be able
to see, talk to and reach your guests. For optimal coziness, create
conversation groupings by moving furnishings closer together - a
guest needing to rise to place a mug on a coffee table is a no-no.
• Get yourself a comfy chair. A large, comfy chair to land in at
the end of the day is the ultimate refuge from the cold world.
Choose one with a high back and an inherent sense of softness
about the upholstery for visual warmth and comfortable seating
is recommended. Create the full “chair ensemble” with a standing
lamp and end table and set the grouping in an intimate corner.
• Cover your “ground.” Nothing warms up a bare floor quicker than
an area rug. Don’t underestimate the visual warmth it provides as
well, especially in sunburst tones. Also, the pile in some Indian and
Pakistani rugs made using vegetable dyes gives you the option of
making them look even “warmer.” From one angle, the colors look
muted and soft, from another, they appear deeper and brighter.
Choose the brighter angle for added winter warmth.
• Light a candle. This literal spark of warmth works in any decor
and in any room. Added visual warmth and design cachet can be
achieved by placing candles in hurricane lamps made of ambertoned
glass or in a grouping of holders that look like woven vines.
• Alter your senses - with scents. Colorful, multi-textured
potpourri - a mixture of scented preserved leaves, nuts, fruit slices,
seedpods and pinecones – artfully arranged in a favorite bowl
provides a vibrant focal point on a coffee or end table and enlivens
a room with a pleasant aroma to lighten spirits and freshen the air.
The natural aromas of fresh flowers, even the less heady varieties,
for their soft, understated scents with the promise of warmer days
to come, is a favorite.
ANIMAL INFORMATION
ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and
neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your
walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with
a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything
else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk
your pet, but it does show your respect for every
homeowner and our beautiful community.
PET ID TAGS
Folks - as soon as the vet gives your young pets
their Rabies shot remember to get their ID tags.
The Rabies tag lists the name, phone number and
address of the vet. So! All you need to do is put the
Rabies tag onto the pet’s collar and leave it there
all the time. That way, if the pet gets loose, anyone
finding him or her can look at the tag to see the
vet’s phone number and call to report the lost
animal. Better yet, add another tag to your pet’s
collar that lists the dog or cat’s name and your own
phone number or address. You can get these from
any pet store. When a pet has these but goes astray,
anyone finding it can call you and you can go get
him or her right away. Your pet will be very glad to
see you! A happy pet is a loving pet.
TOO QUIET AFTER THE HOLIDAYS?
After the busy, activity-filled holidays, does your
home seem too quiet? Do you miss the sound of
little feet padding around? There are pets still
in need of temporary shelter. Would your family
like to help a dog or cat in need? Loving Arms
Pet Placement is a foster-based rescue for dogs
and cats and needs foster families.
While fostering can be challenging, knowing
that you helped an animal when it most
needed shelter and security, then helped it find
its forever home will give you endless joy. Tell
Loving Arms Pet Placement in what capacity
you can help. Can your home accommodate
only small animals or can you foster big dogs?
Can you handle puppies and kittens or only
mature animals? Can you foster short-term or
longer? LAPP has an application on our website
for those interested in fostering.
Loving Arms Pet Placement goes to great
lengths to restore the health of dogs and cats
who come into our rescue. Our vet bills are
high. With the additional mouths to feed, our
fosters’ food bills are more than usual. One
way to donate to Loving Arms - without using
your own money - is to register our rescue
with your Kroger card. To donate “painlessly”
to Loving Arms Pet Placement, go to www.
click on Loving Arms Pet Placement to attach
Loving Arms Pet Placement is a non-profit
501 (c)(3) organization created to address the
problems of stray and abandoned cats and dogs
in Houston and Harris County. Our organization
is comprised of dedicated volunteers who
foster animals in their homes as an alternative
to taking the animal to a shelter.
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a
threat to all our residents. While you may know
your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone
who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many
children are afraid of animals and become
frightened, which could result in the child getting
hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs
and cats must be kept under restraint while in the
unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The
custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have,
harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to
allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat
under the following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more
than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held
by a human being, who is capable of controlling or
governing the dog or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the
animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the
yard while you work or play, it is against the law,
unless the animal is properly restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and
comfortable place for all our residents by being
responsible pet owners. This will not only protect
anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the
area, but also the pet owner who could be held
legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to
properly restrain their pet.
properly restrained please contact:
CFISD BOARD APPROVES 2019-2020 INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDAR
The CFISD Board of Trustees approved the calendar committee’s recommendations for the 2019-2020 instructional calendar during its
regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, December 10 th .
House Bill 1 (79 th Texas Legislature) mandates that instruction for the school year may not begin before the fourth Monday in August.
For the 2019-2020 instructional year, the earliest start date is August 26 th - which will serve as the first day of school.
In the fall semester of 2017, a calendar committee was organized to develop calendars for both the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years.
The committee was made up of district-wide representation, including teachers, parents, community members, campus administrators
and support staff. Developing both calendars at the same time allowed the school Board to vote on next year’s calendar earlier than in past
years. The committee worked to construct the calendars using the 75,600 minutes needed to complete a school year now required by law.
The committee recommended a calendar to the school board that will conclude the 2019-2020 school year on May 28, 2020.
In its meetings, the committee discussed various components of developing the instructional calendars before arriving at a consensus.
The 2019-2020 calendar recommendation presented to the Board of Trustees included:
Students begin school on Monday, Aug. 26, 2019;
Labor Day, September 2, 2019, is a student/staff holiday;
A five-day Thanksgiving holiday (Nov. 25-29, 2019);
A 10-day winter break (Dec. 23, 2019-Jan. 3, 2020);
A five-day spring break March 9-13, 2020;
Good Friday, April 10, 2020, is a student/staff holiday;
The school year will end on May 28, 2020 for students and
February 17 th and May 29, 2020 are designated as inclement weather makeup days.
Safe & Healthy Kids
TEACH .... YOUR CHILDREN TO DEAL WITH PEER PRESSURE
Parents usually value children who try to please and are obedient.
Parents may not realize that learning to disagree with someone and to
make independent decisions starts at an early age. Decision making is an
important skill to teach your children. If children have been taught never
to disagree with anyone, parents may need to help them practice saying
“no” to their friends. Being able to say “no” in every day activities and
express their opinion helps children say “no” to alcohol and drug use.
MAKE.... FAMILY RULES
Develop family rules about the use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs.
Make it clear to children in the family that they may not drink alcohol,
smoke cigarettes or use any other drugs. When children break any
family rules, provide reasonable, appropriate consequences. Be careful
about using severe punishments for small incidents of misbehavior.
Punishment becomes ineffective when it is over used.
PROVIDE .... HEALTHY CREATIVE ACTIVITIES
Participate in hobbies, school events and family activities with your children.
Sharing fun strengthens bonds between children and parents. Plan your
times together carefully. If all of your fun activities focus on movies, theme
parks or sports events, you and your children will give your attention to
the activity rather than to each other. Simple activities like taking walks
together, reading together or sitting around the kitchen provide time to
focus your attention on the children. Children who are left alone or who are
lonely and bored will seek friends, acceptance and stimulation with others
who may influence them to participate in harmful activities.
TEAM UP .... WITH OTHER PARENTS
Join other parents to keep track of where your children are, who they are with
and what they are doing. When parents form a “safety network” with other
parents, it’s much harder for kids to become involved in undesirable activities.
Tell your neighbors and the parents of your children’s’ friends to let you know
if they see your children doing something they shouldn’t be doing.
TALK ... WITH YOUR KIDS ABOUT ALCOHOL & OTHER DRUGS
Let your children know that not everyone drinks, smokes or uses drugs.
MOST people do not use mind altering chemicals. It’s OK not to use
alcohol or drugs. Point out that anyone under age 21 is still growing
physically and that alcohol and other drugs will harm the developing
body.
LEARN .... TO REALLY LISTEN TO YOUR CHILDREN
Turn off the TV. Stop what you’re doing. Give your children your full
attention. Don’t interrupt, give advice or preach while your children are
talking. Ask questions to help clarify their thinking.
HELP .... YOUR CHILDREN FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES
Your children will feel good about themselves when you praise efforts
rather than accomplishments. Correct behavior by criticizing the
behavior rather than the child. Remember, if you tell children they are
“bad, ugly, mean, naughty, dumb,” etc., they will think of themselves
that way and act the way you have described them.
LEAD .... YOUR CHILDREN TO DEVELOP STRONG VALUES
Develop family standards about the kinds of behavior that are expected
of family members. Decide what you family stands for and refer to “our
community” and what “we believe” and how “we handle problems.”
BE ....A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR YOUR CHILDREN
Your behavior, habits and attitudes about alcohol and other drugs make
a strong impression on your children. In homes where children do not
know whether their parents approve or disapprove of the use of alcohol
or other drugs, children are likely to assume that their parents accept the
use of those substances.
KNOW .... WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT A PROBLEM
If the use of alcohol or other drugs creates any kind of problems for your
family, call one of the councils on alcohol and drug abuse listed. Most
provide free counseling.
A HEALTHY, HAPPY NEW YEAR:
11 SMART TIPS
1. Read to your children every day. Start by the age of six months.
Reading to children shows them the importance of communication
and motivates them to become readers. It also provides a context to
discuss issues and learn what is on your child’s mind.
2. Make your children feel loved and important. Kids develop a
sense of self-worth early in life. They get it from their parents. Listen
to what your children have to say. Assure them that they are loved
and safe. Celebrate their individuality and tell them what makes them
special and what you admire about them.
3. Provide your child with a tobacco-free environment. Indoor air
pollution from tobacco increases ear infections, chest infections and
even Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. If you smoke, consider quitting.
Remember, the most important predictor of whether your children
will grow up to be smokers is whether you smoke. Make your home a
smoke-free zone.
4. Pay attention to nutrition. Nutrition makes a big difference in how
kids grow, develop and learn. Good nutrition is a matter of balance.
Provide foods from several food groups at each meal. Emphasize
foods that are less processed, such as whole grain breads and cereals
and fresh fruits and vegetables. Review your child’s diet with your
pediatrician for suggestions.
5. Do a “childproofing” survey of your home. A child’s-eye view home
survey should systematically go from room to room, removing all the
“booby traps” that await the curious toddler or preschooler. Think of
poisons, small objects, sharp edges, knives, firearms and places to fall.
6. Make sure immunizations are up to date. Review your child’s
immunization record with your pediatrician. Make sure your child is
current on recommended immunizations.
8. Prevent violence by setting good examples. Hitting, slapping and
spanking teaches children that it is acceptable to hit other people to
solve problems. Non-physical forms of discipline work better in the long
run. Remember that words can hurt too.
9. Monitor your children’s “media.” Monitor what your children see
and hear on television, in movies and in music. Children are affected by
what they see and hear, particularly in these times of violent images. Talk
to your children about “content.” If you feel that a movie or TV program
is inappropriate, redirect your child to more suitable programming.
10. Become more involved in your child’s school and your child’s
education. Visit your child’s school. Become active in the parent-teacher
organization. Volunteer in the classroom or for special projects. Be
available to help with homework. If your child’s education is important
to you, it will be important to him.
11. Help kids understand tobacco, alcohol and the media. Help your
teenager understand the difference between the misleading messages
in advertising and the truth about the dangers of using alcohol and
tobacco products. Talk about ads with your child. Help your child
understand the real messages being conveyed. Make sure the TV shows
and movies your child watches do not glamorize the use of tobacco,
alcohol and other drugs.
Send your group’s upcoming
events or news/photos of
events you’ve held to:
news@krenekprinting.com
7. Practice “safety on wheels.” Make sure everyone in the car is buckled
up for every ride, with children in the back seat in age-appropriate child
safety seats. All bikers, skaters and skateboarders should wear helmets.
COMMON VITAMIN DEFICIENCES
As we embark on the journey each day to eat and live better, take note
of the common vitamin nutrient deficiencies that are easily treated:
1. Calcium: Calcium is important for maintaining strong bones and
controlling muscle and nerve function. Signs of severely low calcium
include fatigue, muscle cramps, abnormal heart rhythms and a poor
appetite. Make sure you’re getting enough with at least three servings
of milk or yogurt a day. Other good sources of calcium are cheese,
calcium-fortified orange juice and dark, leafy greens.
2. Vitamin D: This vitamin is also critical for bone health. Symptoms
of a vitamin D deficiency can be vague - fatigue and muscle aches or
weakness. If it goes on long term, a vitamin D deficiency can lead to
softening of the bones. To get enough vitamin D, have three servings of
fortified milk or yogurt daily eating fatty fish, such as salmon or tuna,
twice a week and spend some time outside in the sunshine every day.
3. Potassium: Potassium helps the kidneys, heart and other organs
work properly. You could become low in potassium in the short term
because of diarrhea or vomiting, excessive sweating or antibiotics or
because of chronic conditions such as eating disorders and kidney disease,
according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Symptoms of
a deficiency include weight loss, muscle weakness, constipation and in
severe cases, an abnormal heart rhythm. For natural potassium sources,
consume bananas, whole grains, milk, vegetables, beans and peas.
4. Iron: Iron helps your body make red blood cells. When iron levels
get too low, your body can’t effectively carry oxygen. The resulting
anemia can cause fatigue. You might also notice pale skin and dull,
thin, sparse hair. To boost iron levels, eat iron-fortified cereal, beef,
oysters, beans (especially white beans, chickpeas and kidney beans),
lentils and spinach.
5. Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 aids the production of DNA and helps
make neurotransmitters in the brain. With an increasing number of
vegans and people who’ve had weight loss surgery, vitamin B12 deficiency
is becoming more common. Symptoms of severe B12 deficiency
include numbness in the legs, hands or feet; problems with walking
and balance; anemia; fatigue; weakness; a swollen, inflamed tongue;
memory loss; paranoia and hallucinations. You can get vitamin B12
from animal sources: eat more fish, chicken, milk and yogurt. If you’re
vegan, opt for vegan foods fortified with B12, such as non-dairy milk,
meat substitutes and breakfast cereals.
6. Folate: Folate or folic acid, is a particularly important vitamin for
women of childbearing age, which is why prenatal vitamins contain
such a hefty dose. A folate deficiency can cause a decrease in the
total number of cells and large red blood cells as well as neural tube
defects in an unborn child. Symptoms of a folate deficiency include
fatigue, gray hair, mouth ulcers, poor growth and a swollen tongue.
To get folate from food, go for fortified cereals, beans, lentils, leafy
greens and oranges.
7. Magnesium: Magnesium helps support bone health and assists in
energy production. Magnesium deficiency can cause loss of appetite,
nausea and vomiting, fatigue and weakness. In more severe cases,
it can lead to numbness, muscle cramps, seizures, abnormal heart
rhythms, personality changes or low potassium or calcium levels. To
help your levels return to normal, eat more magnesium-rich foods, such
as almonds, cashews, peanuts, spinach, black beans and edamame.
HOW TO GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
By SleepFoundation.org
We asked visitors to our website if getting more sleep is a part of their
New Year’s resolution and we were happy to find that up to 60% of
respondents said, “Yes!” Our most recent monthly poll revealed that
in order to keep up with that New Year’s resolution, up to 28% use a
dark, quiet and comfy sleep environment to get a good night’s sleep,
while18% use a sleep aid and 17% try to stick to regular sleep and wake
up times or depend on a relaxing bedtime routine (7%). Even so, almost
30% of respondents are still not sure what to do to get a good night’s
sleep. In general, most healthy adults need seven to nine hours of sleep
a night, but some individuals are able to function without sleepiness or
drowsiness after as little as six hours of sleep and there are those who
can’t perform at their peak unless they’ve slept ten hours. Sleep aids, a
sleep-friendly environment, relaxation techniques and sleep schedules
can help us achieve a good night’s sleep. Here are for additional steps
you can take to help improve your sleep quality and duration:
THE HISTORY OF NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
The custom of making New Year’s resolutions has been around for
thousands of years, but it hasn’t always looked the way it does today.
The ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make
New Year’s resolutions, some 4,000 years ago. They were also the first to
hold recorded celebrations in honor of the new year, though for them
the year began not in January but in mid-March, when the crops were
planted. During a massive 12-day religious festival known as Akitu,
the Babylonians crowned a new king or reaffirmed their loyalty to the
reigning king. They also made promises to the gods to pay their debts
and return any objects they had borrowed. These promises could be
considered the forerunners of our New Year’s resolutions. If the Babylonians
kept to their word, their (pagan) gods would bestow favor on
them for the coming year. If not, they would fall out of the gods’ favor-a
place no one wanted to be.
A similar practice occurred in ancient Rome, after the reform-minded
emperor Julius Caesar tinkered with the calendar and established
January 1st as the beginning of the new year circa 46 B.C. Named for
Janus, the two-faced god whose spirit inhabited doorways and arches,
January had special significance for the Romans. Believing that Janus
symbolically looked backwards into the previous year and ahead into
the future, the Romans offered sacrifices to the deity and made promises
of good conduct for the coming year.
For early Christians, the first day of the new year became the traditional
occasion for thinking about one’s past mistakes and resolving to do
and be better in the future. In 1740, the English clergyman John Wesley,
founder of Methodism, created the Covenant Renewal Service, most
commonly held on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. Also known as
watch night services, they included readings from Scriptures and hymn
singing and served as a spiritual alternative to the raucous celebrations
normally held to celebrate the coming of the new year. Now popular
within evangelical Protestant churches, especially African-American denominations
and congregations, watch night services held on New Year’s
Eve are often spent praying and making resolutions for the coming year.
Despite the tradition’s religious roots, New Year’s resolutions today
are a mostly secular practice. Instead of making promises to the gods,
most people make resolutions only to themselves and focus purely
on self-improvement (which may explain why such resolutions seem
so hard to follow through on). According to recent research, while as
many as 45 percent of Americans say they usually make New Year’s
resolutions, only 8 percent are successful in achieving their goals. But
that dismal record probably won’t stop people from making resolutions
anytime soon-after all, we’ve had about 4,000 years of practice.
GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water
than from lack of food.
• Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering.
• Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms.
• Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones
rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils:
repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic
matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting.
• Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer.
Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant.
Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in.
• Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown.
• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to
open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias.
• Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture.
• Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open.
Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below
85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying.
• Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs
in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted.
• Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove
too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do
not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar
growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant.
• Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break.
To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris
and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses.
• Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both
evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of
foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider
dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs.
Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist.
• Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50%
humus, including rotted manure.
• Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water.
Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low
plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.
