Kneehill County caps 75th birthday with party
Terri Huxley and David Nadeau
ECA Review
Three-quarters of a Century of history
in farming, family and
community spirit was celebrated last
Fri. Sept. 13.
Approximately over 150 people from
across the county came to witness
Kneehill County’s 75th anniversary at
the Three Hills Curling Rink.
Thirty-seven individual maps from
different time stamps were
on display along the walls
while resident images were
framed as part of the top
entries for a photo contest.
Tables from different communities
such as the Three
Hills Museum and Carbon
Museum also featured local
history with the use of
photos and various tools
used back in the day.
The photo contest winners,
selected by administrators
from 167 submissions, will
see their work illustrate the
county’s 2020 calendar.
In addition to extensive
historical displays, the
county used the event to
unveil its new logo, as determined
by a ratepayer-only
vote.
Compared to its previous design, the
thin black border along the county’s
borders was removed and a blue to
yellow gradient was added to enhance
the modern take on the classic look.
“It represents the actual physical
look of the county,” said Kneehill
County Reeve Jerry Wittstock. “The
other one was kind of scrunched in
there. This one is a little closer to what
the county actually looks like. I like the
colours, I like the blue sky and green in
it for the grass and crops. That’s what
the people liked also. I’m happy that
that is the one that was chosen.”
This logo will slowly be phased out
starting with new signage that will
replace the old ones that sit on the side
of the main roadways into the county.
A hot lunch was provided as well as
cute cupcakes featuring the new
county logo.
Reeve Wittstock found the event to be
a resounding success.
“I thought the program went very
well and just the people that showed up
that had conversations with council
and staff. I think it was a great way to
highlight what the county does for our
residents. It was just a great
celebration.”
He added, “It was nice to see the participation
in the photo contest and it
was nice to see the amount of voting
that was done on the new logo. It was
nice to just have everyone engaged.”
The anniversary held a high standard
to showcase their
accomplishments.
“It’s our 75th anniversary. You highlight
your achievements and we’ve
come a long way in 75 years from operating
a $10,000 grader with lights and a
cab to what we have now,” said Reeve
Wittstock.
“I’m proud of the residents, I’m
proud of the accomplishments of our
county. We are a very prosperous community
in Alberta. We are very
innovative, very forward thinking and
it obviously shows,” he said.
Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister
Kaycee Madu and Olds-Didsbury-
Three Hills MLA Nathan Cooper, as
well as Reeve Wittstock, gave some
empowering speeches to the interested
crowd.
“I thought it went very smoothly. It
was great to see representation from
the provincial government there which
is something we were sort of lacking in
the last little bit,” said Reeve Wittstock.
In his comments, Minister Madu
said Kneehill County, like many
Over 150 people came to celebrate the three-quarter century
milestone for Kneehill County on Fri. Sept. 13 at the Three Hills
Curling Rink. The public was invited to take a step back in time
with different maps and museum items to discover. Cupcakes
featuring the new logo were a staple to finishing off a hearty
lunch buffet meal.
Alberta communities, has seen tough
times but has always persevered.
“You have shown the spirit and
strength it takes to be an Albertan,” he
said.
MLA Cooper said he was proud to
represent this area in the legislature
and that it is important to pass on the
virtues of hard work and dedication to
the next generation.
Other guests included representatives
from neighbouring towns and
villages, former county staff and councillors,
and rural community hall
representatives.
Commemorative historic images
were gifted to each rural school hall
including Orkney, Ghostpine, Hesketh,
Three Hills, Huxley, Swalwell,
Wimborne and Torrington.
History
The municipal District of Kneehill
#278 first became a reality on Jan. 1,
1944 when the provincial government
ordered a dissolution of four smaller
districts, combining them into one
larger unit.
These four areas were: MD of
Carbon, established 1912;
MD of Norquay (in Acme),
established 1918; MD of
Ghost Pine (in Trochu),
established 1912; MD of
Stauffer, established 1918.
The following year in 1945,
the district was renumbered
#48.
Over the years, significant
projects have highlighted
milestone anniversaries.
In 1994, over 700 Township
and Range Roads were
erected on all county roads
to recognize the 50th
anniversary.
In 2004, signs were
installed on major entrances
into the municipality to commemorate
the 60th
anniversary.
For the 70th, council
announced the new administration
building and finally for the 75th, the
unveiling of the county logo and
replacement of the 60th anniversary
signs as announced.
As for interesting facts, the county
was the first in Canada and one of the
first in North America to adopt hail
suppression measures because this
area is located in one of the worst hail
areas in the world.
In 1904, a quarter of land taxes was
approximately $8.
Prior to World War I, it only cost $10
to buy 160 acres of land.
The county used to pay $85 for
funeral services.
Throughout time, 63 schools were
located within Kneehill.
Erskine crosswalk requested
Terri Huxley
ECA Review
An Erskine resident has
requested a pedestrian crosswalk
be placed at Highway 835
and Alberta Avenue within the
hamlet’s limits.
Their nine-year-old daughter
uses this area on a daily basis to
get to school either by bus or
walking.
She must cross this roadway
to get home from school as the
bus only drops off one way at
the far north end of the street or
only on the other side of the
road.
Clearview buses will not give
her a ride home as the home
they live in is on the wrong side
of the highway.
“Every year I sit on my deck
watching cars go by at 60 to 70
km per hour in a 50 kilometre
per hour zone. One of these days
something not nice is going to
happen. Help me prevent this.”
“If cars don’t stop for buses
with stop signs why would they
stop for a nine year old little girl
trying to cross a highway?”
Coun. Cheri Nietz concurred
that speeding is a common
occurrence along that specific
roadway.
The county’s bylaw officer did
not recommend a crossing at
the requested location due to its
proximity to Highway 12, a busy
stretch.
County administration has
made a call to Alberta
Transportation on this issue to
get their input and expects a
response sometime this week.
IDP/ICF
time delay request
The County of Stettler has
chosen to send out a letter to
neighbouring municipalities to
garner support for a request to
delay Intermunicipal
Development Plans (IDP) &
Intermunicipal Collaboration
Frameworks (ICF) due to the
uncertainty of the county’s
future revenue streams and
currently strained resources.
All municipalities are
required to follow this as per
the Modernized Municipal
Government Act (MGA) by creating
ICF and IDP with the
municipalities which they share
common boundaries.
The recent announcement of
plans to provide property tax
relief to shallow gas producers,
the review of the current assessment
model, and the ensuing
uncertainty surrounding the
future of municipal revenue
streams has precipitated questioning
the timing of
requirements to fulfill the obligation
of completing
Intermunicipal Development
Plans and Intermunicipal
Collaboration Frameworks with
their regional, geographical
neighbors.
“It’s like sending us to a knife
fight with a spoon,” said Chief
Administrative Officer (CAO)
Yvette Cassidy.
“We have been in consultation
with our local MLA, Nate
Horner regarding the hurdles
we are facing. Completing negotiations
and committing to
service models through IDPs
and ICFs is putting the future of
our own municipalities at great
financial risk, not knowing
what the future holds in terms
of municipal revenues.”
MLA Nate Horner was in
attendance to witness the conversation,
hearing loud and
clear the issues the county is
facing.
He offered support and advocacy
at the provincial level
specifically on this issue among
other concerns brought to the
table for discussion.
Emergency
management protocol
Lee Hardman, Director of
Protective Services &
Emergency Management,
brought council to the attention
of the county’s current emergency
management plan and
how it is in dire need of
updating.
The county received a
$5,000 grant from the
Alberta Emergency
Management Agency to
assist with the utilization of
a consultant.
ECA Review
It was confirmed Tuesday, Sept. 10
that a landspout tornado had touched
down south of the Village of Carbon.
Environment Canada issued a small
release following the announcement
saying that “An area of showers has
been affecting portions of Southern
Alberta over the past couple of days
and on Tues. Sept. 10 produced the
23rd tornado of 2019 in the province.”
The tornado touched down at
approximately 2:15 p.m. eight kilometres
south of Carbon and only lasted
for a couple of minutes.
“It was very short lived,” said Kyle
Fougère, Warning Preparedness
Meteorologist with the Government of
Canada’s Environment and Climate
Change Canada (ECCC) division.
“The people that witnessed it
watched it cross the road and dissipate,”
said Fougère.
No damage was reported as landspout
tornadoes are known to be
mostly harmless compared to the
supercell tornadoes humans normally
associate with.
It was reported to have a
preliminary rating of EF0 on the
Enhanced Fujita scales as implemented
by Environment Canada.
This means it is the lowest on the
scale and is the weakest type of
tornado.
“They can form with any type of
thunderstorms or really any type of
developing storms in Alberta,” said
Fougère. “They form when you have a
wind shift at the surface and you have
basically air that is already spinning
and you have storms develop on top of
it that stretches the rotation so it’s not
the same as the very strong supercell
tornadoes that are particularly more
associated with doing a lot of damage.”
Winds were recorded between 90
and 130 kilometers per hour.
“A landspout tornado is very rare to
do a significant amount of damage. It
can be very weak and short lived,” he
said.
Meteorologists continue to investigate
this tornado.
ECA Review
Unknown individual(s) broke into
the Alix Post office, collecting various
pieces of mail on the evening of Tues,
Sept. 10.
A Canada Post employee alerted the
RCMP when they discovered the disturbances
in the building.
They attended the scene and conducted
an examination, collecting
some evidence in the process.
“At this point we do not have any
suspects, we are continuing the investigation
utilizing the CCTV systems in
the area,” said Bashaw Staff Sgt.
Bruce Holliday
The post office and RCMP are
working together to determine who’s
mail has been taken.
RCMP have also notified other post
offices within the jurisdiction of the
break in so they are extra vigilant.
The owners of Smith’s Equipment
Sales in Lougheed, Alta. were alerted
to suspicious activity on their lot at
approximately 3:30 a.m. on Mon. Sept.
16.
A royal blue four-door ford truck
with a small cargo trailer was
observed pulling up to the front door
of the business close to the BadBoy
lawnmowers.
The vehicle then went and parked
on the side of the building and turned
off the headlights. By that time, the
owners responded and the vehicle
sped off south on range road 114.
The vehicle was spotted about a mile
down that road, scoping out other
yards and fled again when they knew
they were spotted.
The owners would like to point out
that this appears to be a repeat visitor,
as the truck was also the subject of a 3
a.m. visit in July.
It is a unique colour blue for a Ford
Valley Ski Hill
nominated to Kraft
Heinz Project Play
Terri Huxley
ECA Review
The Valley Ski Hill has been nominated
to be a contender in the $250,000
Kraft Heinz Project Play.
This program goes towards recreational
facility upgrades with three
second place winners each receiving
$25,000 for their project.
For the ski hill located north of
Alliance, the physical hillside is
sliding.
Over the years the soil on the hill
has become saturated by the runoff in
the spring, causing the hill to slide.
Every fall, heavy equipment has to
be brought in to push the soil back into
place before snow making can begin.
Through countless volunteer hours
and donated equipment, the hill gets
up and running each season.
However, the club is dangerously
close to losing one of the T-bar towers
to this slide, and if that happens, the
hill will most likely close.
An engineered plan has been drawn
up to fix the hill and all that is needed
is the funds to go ahead with it.
The family of the late Karen Barker express
their appreciation for all of the phone calls,
texts, visits, and expressions of sympathy during
our recent loss. Your kindness and support for
Karen and our family has been overwhelming.
A special thank you to the
Thank
You
Many have already voiced their concerns
and appreciation for the regional
facility including Valley Ski Hill Board
of directors member Carol MacRea
who nominated the ski hill to the
program.
She sees this program as a “community
builder.”
“If we lose that tower we are
hooped,” said MacRea.
The rules of the program are simple:
for this round the public is asked to
submit photos worth three points,
sharing their post on twitter for five
points and/or submitted stories worth
10 points with an external judging
component as well.
The more points accumulated, the
better the odds of placing in the top
four entries.
The deadline is fast approaching
with only three days left as of Thurs.
Sept. 19 so submissions are more
important than ever.
A number of people have already
submitted their stories and images on
site.
It’s hard to
be humble
OPINION
The opinions expressed are not necessarily
the opinions of this newspaper.
Brenda Schimke
ECA Review
The first clause of Section 15 of the
Canadian Constitution states, “Every
individual is equal before and under
the law and has the right to equal protection
and equal benefit of the law
without discrimination.”
The only reason this statement is
enshrined in law is because we don’t
believe it’s true.
With the help of Janice MacKinnon
and her blue-ribbon panel, the Kenney
government has cleverly set a trap to
use unions and professional associations
to distract the public from their
real agenda.
“
Jealousy and
hatred are two
powerful emotions that
enable unscrupulous
political leaders to
employ bullying and
fear to get elected and
sustain power.
Unemployed white-collar workers in
Calgary and blue-collar oil-related
workers throughout the province are
angry because they believe the upper
elite socialist civil servants (doctors,
nurses and teachers) were protected
during the recession while they disproportionately
bore the financial
pain.
Conveniently forgetting that our
nurses, doctors and teachers are the
best paid in Canada because the oil
industry pushed up Alberta’s average
wage rates to levels not seen in other
provinces.
Previous conservative governments
had no choice but to increase the
wages of these professionals in order
to recruit and retain them during a
time of extreme wage and population
growth.
Jealousy and hatred are two powerful
emotions that enable
unscrupulous political leaders to
employ bullying and fear to get elected
and sustain power.
Jealous and angry people will accept
the pain of labour unrest in our hospitals
and schools because ‘we’re
sticking it to the socialist elites’.
How often do we say out loud or in
our heads, “I work hard whereas civil
servants are lazy, over-compensated,
take too much sick time and receive a
cushy pension.” Or “I deserve more
because I’ve made better choices or I
was born into a hard-working family
and we’ve contributed so much more
than them.”
We have a foreshadow of what 2020
will look like in Alberta because we’ve
done the slash and burn of civil servants,
public institutions and
infrastructure before in the 1970s.
We still live with the consequences
of those cuts 40 years later with a
shortage of hospital beds and medical
specialists in all cities, including Red
Deer, excessively long bus rides for
rural students, overcrowded classrooms
in larger centers and high
municipal debt.
It’s not in human nature to be
humble.
Yet it’s very easy to exalt oneself by
putting down others.
Too many, who have never worked
in a civil servant position and are
egged on by populist governments
and right-wing think tanks, exalt
themselves by putting down and
degrading those who work in jobs
serving the people.
Religious texts of all faiths address
arrogance in the human heart and
warn against the evils of vengeance.
These texts also encourage believers
not to take advantage of the weak and
poor, love their enemies and not put
themselves in the higher place. But,
alas, it’s tempting and often easy to set
aside general consideration and kindness
towards others when our hearts
and minds have been primed with
envy and hatred.
Kenney is taking away the bargaining
rights of professional
associations and unions by using the
courts and because he has an ace in
the hole—the notwithstanding clause
that supersedes the first clause of
Section 15 of the Constitution—he and
his oil patch cronies will win. But at
what cost to civil society?
GUEST EDITORIAL
Donor-supported CBC
worth pursuing
by Brian Giesbrecht, Senior Fellow
Frontier Center for Public Policy
CBC Radio was once a national
treasure.
From Peter Gzowski through Arthur
Black, Shelagh Rogers and Danny
Finkleman, a turn of the knob
rewarded the listener with information,
entertainment and humour.
But now, a push of the button is more
likely to bring on someone eager to talk
about their sexuality, ethnic origin or
skin colour.
The truth is I’m perfectly happy to let
people do whatever they want sexually.
Pierre Elliot Trudeau said in 1968
that the state has no place in the bedrooms
of the nation.
I believed him then and I believe him
now.
Consenting adults can do what they
want – I just don’t need to know about it
on the CBC.
And, as for racial or ethnic matters,
Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson
Mandela have me absolutely convinced
that skin colour and ethnicity are irrelevant,
so I simply don’t care if you look
different than me.
I’m no more interested in your culture,
ethnicity or sex life than you’re
interested in mine.
Today, too many shows on CBC featuring
some troubled soul rattling on
about their sexuality and culture bring
my groans; one show on the topic is
more than enough.
But CBC seems to think that listeners
have an insatiable appetite for
angst-filled special-interest commentary,
that relentlessly banging the
drum about diversity, reconciliation or
the world-threatening “climate emergency”
every time there’s a natural
weather event.
CBC has become tediously missionary
rather than journalistic on
these issues.
The larger issue is whether CBC
should exist in its present form at all.
Not only does the broadcaster
duplicate services that the private
sector provides, but its biased
reporting, in cases such as the Gerald
Stanley trial, is appalling.
Yet taxpayers are obliged to pay
CBC’s substantial and rising costs.
The last thing Canada’s beleaguered
mainstream media needs is competition
from government-subsidized
journalism.
Getting rid of this hopelessly politicized
duplication should be the first
order of business for a new federal
government.
Americans have shown us a useful
alternative to a taxpayer funded CBC.
National Public Radio (NPR) offers
an excellent service and it only costs
taxpayers a few cents each.
NPR relies mainly on voluntary
donors and has been operating successfully
for almost 50 years.
The beauty of the American system
is that if their program directors
insisted on boring listeners to tears
with identity politics drivel (like CBC
does), donations would dry up.
Their programmers have to be
responsive to listeners’ wants.
Surely CBC’s uber-progressive executives
and programmers don’t.
Almost all modern information services
– podcasts, YouTube and the like
– use this model: fully listener and
advertiser funded.
For CBC, the government chooses to
continue a funding model that might
have made some sense in 1936, when it
was created, but certainly doesn’t in
today’s Internet world of bountiful,
instantly-accessible information.
Clearly, CBC doesn’t want to change
its continuing programming choices –
identity and climate politics, seemingly
leaning ever more left.
Despite collapsing audiences, as long
as CBC can facilitate the present federal
government’s agenda, it obviously
is betting on a continuing payday.
It’s time to consider a more balanced
and less expensive alternative.
Jaala Hill enjoyed Japan visit
Eileen Morrill
ECA Review
A smiling Jaala Hill kept
the promise she made to the
Hanna Council in July and
returned to the council
chambers for the Sept. 10
meeting to present a show of
photos from her visit to
Wake, Japan as part of the
Hanna/Wake Student
Exchange Program.
Hill said that during her
visit to Japan, she was honoured
to meet the mayor of
Wake.
Hill also visited several
temples and was hosted by
an elementary school where
she watched the students
ride unicycles.
She visited Tokyo
Disneyland, walked on a
hanging bridge, and had several
visits to a “really big”
mall.
The exchange student was
hosted by five different families
during her twenty-day
stay in Japan.
Hill and a 16-year-old girl
from one of the host families
ventured together by train
to Yokohama, Japan.
Food was not a problem
for her as the folks in Wake
prepared food she liked and
on one occasion Hill cooked
a Canadian meal for her
host family.
Hill did learn a little of the
language and can greet
another with “Hi” in the
Japanese tongue.
In response to a question
from Coun. Sandra
Beaudoin, Hill acknowledged
that this was her first
trip away without her family
and although she had fun
and time seemed to fly, she
missed her family.
As the exchange visit
came to a close, she said that
she was ready to come home.
Jada Hill, Hill’s mother,
said that with modern technology
she and her daughter
were able to keep in touch
throughout her visit which
helped make this a really
good experience for her
daughter.
Jada said because of the
new experiences her children
gained through her
family being a host family,
she would “do it again in a
heartbeat.’’
Hill said she would love to
visit Japan again and noted
that although the airport in
Japan was huge, she had no
trouble navigating it and
also had no problems during
her 11-hour flight.
Hill was encouraged by
Council to make this same
presentation to her
schoolmates.
Coun. Beaudoin noted that
she had seen Hill grow in
confidence through her
hosting and travels.
Mayor Warwick thanked
Hill for being a very good
ambassador to Hanna’s
twinned town, Wake, Japan.
Grant Notifications
CAO Neill reported that
the Hanna Learning Centre
has received notice of
approval of their application
for $673,000 of Federal
funding through the
Western Economic
Diversification to offset the
costs of operating the Hanna
HANNA COUNCIL
Business Hub Facility.
Also, Neill reported the Town
will receive the following
interim amounts: Municipal
Sustainability Initiative (MSI)
Capital funding of $397,437; MSI
Operating funding of $140,261;
and Federal Gas Tax funding of
$289,168.
The provincial MSI funding is
approximately $250,000 less
than the budget anticipated
while Federal Gas Tax funding
is double the amount
anticipated.
A percentage of Hanna
Policing Costs may be assigned
to Hanna Ratepayers
CAO Neill reported that the
Province of Alberta Ministry of
Justice and Solicitor General,
are reviewing Provincial Police
Costing Models.
Neill said presently towns
like Hanna with a population
under 5,000, Metis Settlements
and all municipal districts/
counties regardless of population
do not pay for policing as it
is covered by the Province of
Alberta.
Hanna Pro Rodeo Queen
reflects on past year
Terri Huxley
ECA Review
A year in the life of a rodeo queen
isn’t always the glitz and glam many
associate it with.
It’s early mornings, late nights, and
busy hours in-between representing
the best version of yourself and your
rodeo.
For Alli Sauer of Acadia Valley, this
year was condensed to six months as
the other six were spent overseas in
Ireland studying.
During this summer, Sauer has
been racking up miles across the province
to be an advocate for the sport of
rodeo
“I always grew up being involved
with it, not necessarily on a pro-level
but within the industry all over the
place so just to become the face of that
and to bridge the gap between contestants
and spectators was something I
was really passionate about,” said
Sauer.
Growth has been a key to this position
as well.
“I’ve grown in confidence from
when I started the competition but I
would say I still have the same amount
of drive and passion I had when I was
in the pageant,” said Sauer.
This ambassadorship is what drew
her in initially, but the vast connections
she has made has been an added
bonus.
There were numerous highlights
throughout the year but one really
stood out to the local rodeo queen.
“Walking across the big stage at
Calgary Stampede is one of the best
things you will ever do as a rodeo
queen and the amount of people that I
have met through networking – I’ve
created this home in the rodeo
industry so that’s a pretty neat thing,”
she said.
For a day in the life of a rodeo queen,
Sauer begins her day by getting ready
which takes roughly an hour to an
hour and a half. Then the time is spent
driving to the event where it usually
begins with a parade followed by a
pancake breakfast.
“It’s just a lot of socializing and
meeting with people and living up to
the expectations of what your committee
expects and hopes you to be at
these events. Most of the time it is just
[about] being yourself, creating this
happy persona but still remaining
true to what you believe in,” she said.
Sauer is sad her reign is almost
complete but as she eloquently put
“All good things must come to an
end.”
Once everything is all said and
done, Sauer is continuing her education
at the University of
Saskatchewan, graduating with an
Agribusiness degree with a minor in
field crop production.
Not enough contestants were able to
put on a competition for this year but
Sauer will still be passing down the
crown at the end of the weekend.
The Hanna Pro Rodeo is taking
place the last weekend in September.
Welcome Everybody
to this year’s Rodeo
and Good Luck!
The new Police Costing
Model developed by the
Ministry of Justice and
Solicitor General anticipates
that all municipalities
will contribute directly to
the cost of front line
policing.
Neill said, “The model
released by the ministry if
implemented may mean a
cost to the Town of Hanna
taxpayers in the amount
$55,000 annually which is
equivalent to a 2% tax
increase.”
Neill posed the question
that if the province implements
the policy where
towns like Hanna pay a percentage
for policing.
“Will Hanna have more
input into services received?
Will there be more service?”
Neill concluded, “There
are a lot of questions.”
Climate Change Task
Force Update
Chief Administration
Officer (CAO) Kim Neill
reported that the Climate
Change Task Force held
their final regular meeting
on Aug. 20.
At that meeting, the Task
Force recommended that
Cactus Corridor become the
stewards of the $80,000
remaining in Coal
Transition Funding and
take over the responsibility
of managing the
Community Action Teams
to the end of 2019.
Neill stated, “The core
Task Force members will
continue to work and
manage renewable energy
projects as well as be available
to meet and be involved
with any outside business
opportunity that may
present itself.”
Neill also noted that Doug
Griffiths from 13Ways was
in Hanna Sept. 5 where he
met with Council to review
the draft tactical plan.
13Ways also met with the
Cactus Corridor Economic
Development Corporation
Board of Directors to review
the progress on their
Strategic Plan.
Meter reading
equipment
becoming obsolete
Brent Olesen advised that
the water meter reading
equipment Hanna presently
uses is becoming obsolete,
so Hanna Public Works and
Hanna Administration are
in discussion with providers
about a mobile collector
system or an antenna
system.
Olesen said that there are
new and improved water
billing systems on the
market that are not labour
intensive and compile a
very detailed record of history
of usage which can be
used to help sort out consumer
questions and
prevent
misunderstandings.
Leaders in Training
At the Sept. 10 Council
Meeting, Gwen Snell,
Director of Community
Service, proudly suggested
the resolution that Hanna
Council unanimously
passed recognizing the volunteer
commitment and
dedication of students
Brandon Barth, Abby
Kolkman, Drew McGillion
and Owen Olsen for their
participation in the Leaders
in Training Program.
Their contribution to
other programs and activities
provided by the Town of
Hanna in 2019 was nominated
as well.
Mayor Warwick presented
a Certificate of
Completion and gift cards to
the four successful
participants.
Angela McGillion is the
program trainer.
Leaders in Training are
required to provide a minimum
of 125 hours of
volunteer service, obtain
first aid training and complete
the HIGH FIVE
Principles of Healthy Child
Development course.
Snell said this is a heavy
commitment and very valuable
in terms of developing
strong leaders.
Potential Leaders in
Training were recruited
this spring and required to
apply to the program.
Under the guidance of the
experienced leaders, the
four young people gained
the knowledge and understanding
of the
requirements to implement
a successful recreation program,
and the importance
of role modelling for young
children.
The students were very
actively involved in the Epic
Adventures Summer
Program. Snell noted
Hanna had developed a very
good product and a lot of
towns have asked to copy it.
Snell proudly admitted,
“Hanna gladly shares”.
Pool liners installed
Gwen Snell, Director of
Community Services, made
a report on the status of the
installation of the Town
Pool liners.
The pools are now closed
to the public for the season,
have been drained, and the
old liners have been
removed.
The remains of the old liners
are being prepared for recycling
and have been placed in the
large dumpster which has been
set near the pool area.
Installation of the new liners
is underway and once the new
liners are fully installed the
pools will be partially filled and
winterized.
Arena opening
Snell reported that the
opening of the Hanna Arena is
on schedule for Oct. 11.
Important asset
Cont’d from Pg 4
Valley Ski Hill has been
an important asset to the
community as there are no
other ski hills within 150
kilometres of Alliance.
Schools come from six different
counties in the
eastern part of the province
including Wainwright,
Camrose, Flagstaff,
Paintearth, Stettler, and
Special Areas, giving every
student the opportunity to
learn how to ski, a chance
they would probably not get
if Valley Ski Hill didn’t exist.
“We really do have a lot of
school kids come and learn
how to ski. It’s a super
family friendly sport and it’s
so much fun for kids and it’s
a winter outdoor sport.”
MacRea highlight the disabled
ski program,
something unique to the hill
as there are scarcely little
programs for disabled
people to utilize in the area.
“Around here the only
other option is hockey
unless it’s a team sport in
school,” said MacRea. “And
two: we have the CAD
answer to puzzle on page 11
program which is a disabled
program. Like in the city
there are opportunities, out
here not so many.”
The hill also has a racing
program, and a freestyle
program which gives children
of any age or ability the
opportunity to develop that
passion for skiing that their
parents and grandparents
had, despite the flatter
landscape.
The community’s ‘passion
for play’ all started 72 years
ago, when a group of volunteers
with a passion for
skiing got together and
started a ski hill.
They relocated 15 years
later to the present location.
In 1989, the lodge burnt
down, and again the volunteers
and the community
rallied and rebuilt a beautiful
new lodge.
This love for skiing has
been passed down from generation
to generation, as has
the determination to run a
quality ski hill out on the
prairies.
Rally deadline is on Sun.
Sept. 22.
Cont’d from Pg 7
The family moved back to Romania
when Bianca was young, and it was in
Pitesti, Romania, where she started
playing tennis at age 7.
They moved back to Canada a few
years later and Bianca was 11 when
she became involved with Tennis
Canada.
There is a constant theme to the
backgrounds of other top Canadian
tennis players:
— Toronto’s Milos Raonic, who
missed this year’s U.S. Open due to
injury, was born in Yugoslavia (now
Montenegro) and is of Serb heritage.
His parents, worried about political
unrest in the Balkans, moved the
family to Brampton, Ont., in 1994,
when Milos was three.
— Félix Auger-Aliassime, currently
the top-ranked male in our country,
was born in Canada, but his father
emigrated from Togo, and married a
Quebec woman.
— Denis Shapovalov, the thirdranked
Canadian who made it to the
third round of the U.S. Open, was born
in Tel Aviv, Israel, the son of Russian-
Israeli citizens Tessa and Viktor
Shapovalov. They moved from Russia
to Tel Aviv when
the Soviet Union
was collapsing,
later settling in
Canada.
— Vasek
Pospisil, from
Vernon, B.C., is
the fourthranked
Canadian
male. His parents
Milos and Mila
escaped the
Communist
regime in
Czechoslovakia
in 1988 and
wound up in
Vernon, where
Vasek was born
in 1990.
Immigration, it
seems, has been
good for the fortunes
of
Canadian tennis.
