Any of these should put a smile on the lips of someone seeking a ‘Duracell bunny’ of a lipstick. (And beyond that, the smile should stay put.) Burberry Full Kisses, £24. Slightly mixed metaphors here, but to my mind Burberry can’t put a foot wrong with their lip offering. There’s something about the bevelled tip of this Burberry Full Kisses design that makes wonderfully precise application of the full-coverage-yet-comfy formulation, which comes in a slimline and longer-than-usual stick. Initially, I didn’t quite buy Burberry’s promise that you don’t need a mirror to apply it – but funnily enough, even with a deep grape shade like Dewberry No.549, it’s absolutely true. (Something to do with that slant-y design.) It doesn’t suck the life out of your lips – in fact, it’s pleasantly moisturising, while offering a very longlasting tint. (The satin coverage does fade, but lips still have colour several hours after application.) Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Crayon, £9.99. This lives up to its name but (again) doesn’t feel hideously tight, as so many matte products do. It’s in a Crayola-type format, which swivels up. (If you want to keep the nib sharp, there’s a little sharpener in the end.) There’s also a Superstay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick, £9.99, in the same range – a liquid, which you apply with the wand applicator, as opposed to a crayon texture, if that’s more your (make-up) bag. 3INA The Longwear Lipstick, £10.94. Like the Chanel option, this has a doe-foot applicator and all the convenience of a gloss, but with the intensity of a really super-charged, pigmented lipstick. It becomes opaque on lips – but if it’s too intense when applied ‘neat’, add a dab and blend it for a long-lasting stain. Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint, £19. When Rihanna launched her make-up line, there were queues round the block for weeks at Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge – and really, I’m not surprised, wealdentimes.co.uk 134 with products like this. In packaging that looks like The Shard, it’s featherlight, and said to offer 12-hour hold. This high impact lipstick comes in a relatively small range of shades, right now – the most wearable are probably Uncuffed (a rosy-toned nude) and the fabulous scarlet Uncensored. Chanel Rouge Allure Ink, £31. I think this is my favourite of the bunch – but treat-priced. Almost weightless, it glides on via the doe-foot applicator to deliver really, really strong colour. (It’s not called ‘Ink’ for nothing.) The mix of waxes, polymers and vegetable oils is surprisingly comfy tho’ – unlike so many long-last formulations I’ve tried. There are lighter shades in the range – fresh pink 168 Serenity or rose-beige 140 Amoreux – but I love the brazenly dark options, such as 154 Experimenté and 152 Choquant, a deep red. I apply to my bottom lip, smoosh my lips together – et voilà. And sometimes I pat the colour into lips for soft, blurred edges that look really natural and ‘bitten’. You can then use this as a base for another lipstick over the top – and when that’s worn off, you’ll still have great colour underneath, but on its own, the colour stays for hours and hours. Through a morning smoothie. Through a mid-morning coffee. To be honest, I only feel compelled to ‘top it up’ after a vinaigrette-drenched salad lunch. (There’s nothing short of an actual tattoo – which you won’t catch me recommending – that’ll survive that!) Mwah, mwah… And you’re welcome!
