<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> aim <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this report is to give a picture <strong>on</strong> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>export</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>SVOD</strong> services <strong>outside</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>Europe</strong>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong>. 79 <strong>SVOD</strong> services in 21 countries worldwide are part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the sample.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> report looks at the circulati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> unique film titles and the volume/occurrences <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> available <strong>on</strong><br />

these services, <strong>on</strong> a regi<strong>on</strong>al and service basis.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> first part gives a snapshot <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the availability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> around the globe after which a overview for<br />

each regi<strong>on</strong> is provided.


Methodology<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> analysis has been carried out based <strong>on</strong> data provided <strong>by</strong> Ampere Analysis and comprehends <strong>SVOD</strong><br />

catalogue data collected in June 2019.<br />

A film is defined as a feature film, ficti<strong>on</strong> film, documentary or other film c<strong>on</strong>tent available in the “Film” /<br />

“Movie” secti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <strong>SVOD</strong> catalogues part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the sample.<br />

For the origin <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a film, <strong>on</strong>ly the first country <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> producti<strong>on</strong> is taken into account. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> producti<strong>on</strong> countries are<br />

based <strong>on</strong> data collected from the Observatory’s LUMIERE database <strong>on</strong> admissi<strong>on</strong>s to <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> in <strong>Europe</strong>, IMDb and<br />

the Movie database. Minority co-producti<strong>on</strong>s which might have been <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU origin through agreements are not<br />

taken into account.<br />

EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> – Dominance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a few <str<strong>on</strong>g>export</str<strong>on</strong>g> countries but medium film producing countries manage to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>export</str<strong>on</strong>g> several film titles<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> majority <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> found <strong>on</strong> <strong>SVOD</strong> services around the world are produced in EU-5. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

United Kingdom is, <strong>by</strong> far, the biggest supplier <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> with 38% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all unique EU titles,<br />

followed <strong>by</strong> France with 18%, Germany with 12%, Italy with 11% and Spain with 6%. Together,<br />

these 5 countries account for 85% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all unique EU film titles.<br />

However, medium size film producing countries, with diversified filmographies (Belgium, the<br />

Netherlands, Austria), special genres (e.g. Nordic noir), or English-speaking (Ireland), manage also<br />

to <str<strong>on</strong>g>export</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>outside</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Europe</strong>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se 7 countries account for 11% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all unique film titles<br />

found in the <strong>SVOD</strong> catalogues analysed.<br />

For the rest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU countries, <str<strong>on</strong>g>export</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing their film producti<strong>on</strong> to other world regi<strong>on</strong>s remains<br />

difficult and <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten is dependent <strong>on</strong> being picked up <strong>by</strong> a global <strong>SVOD</strong> service, operating in <strong>Europe</strong><br />

such as Netflix and Amaz<strong>on</strong>.


Key findings <strong>on</strong> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>export</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>SVOD</strong> services<br />

EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> – Diverse regi<strong>on</strong>s and <strong>SVOD</strong> services are the biggest buyers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU film titles<br />

North America (16 services) and China (3 services) have the largest number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> unique EU film<br />

titles with respectively 4 095 and 2 585 unique EU titles.<br />

Russia (3 services) and Australia & New Zealand (8 services) are other regi<strong>on</strong>s with an above<br />

average number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> unique EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> titles with respectively 1 813 and 1 644 unique titles.<br />

On the other hand, Southeast Asia (17 services) has the lowest amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> unique EU film<br />

titles with 761 titles<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> biggest buyer for EU film titles was Amaz<strong>on</strong> with 3 281 unique titles in its 14 country<br />

catalogues, followed <strong>by</strong> Netflix with 1 816 unique titles for its 20 catalogues<br />

Russian service Ivi and the 3 Chinese services Youku, iQiyi, Tencent Video were the biggest<br />

single country services acquiring EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Indian service Eros Now, Canadian service Sundance Now, Viu (6 countries) and CBS All Access<br />

<strong>on</strong> the other hand had between 31 and 3 unique EU film titles in their catalogues.


Key findings <strong>on</strong> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>export</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>SVOD</strong> services<br />

EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> – Export depends <strong>on</strong> language, cultural and geographical proximity<br />

On a regi<strong>on</strong>al/country basis, the regi<strong>on</strong>s in which the highest share <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> were found<br />

(between 15,4% and 22,4% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> available) are these with a cultural/language proximity to<br />

the EU (Latin America, North America, South Africa, Australia & New Zealand) or also a geographical<br />

proximity (Russian Federati<strong>on</strong>, Turkey).<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> Asian and Indian markets remain difficult for EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> and were the regi<strong>on</strong>s with the lowest<br />

shares <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten boosted <strong>by</strong> global players rather than nati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>SVOD</strong> services which rely<br />

<strong>on</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> for their subscribers.<br />

Netflix and Amaz<strong>on</strong>, operating in <strong>Europe</strong> and <strong>outside</strong>, are the multi-country services with the<br />

highest share <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> in their catalogues, with an average <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 18%. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>y tend to circulate <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

acquired in <strong>Europe</strong> also to the countries in which they operate <strong>outside</strong> <strong>Europe</strong>.<br />

British <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> represent the highest share <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> in North America, South Africa, India, Southeast<br />

Asia, Australia and New Zealand – language/cultural proximity.<br />

French <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> score their highest share <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> in the Middle East, Turkey and China and Japan –<br />

appeal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> French cinema high in these regi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Spanish <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g>, without surprise, claim their highest share in Latin America but also Southeast Asia.<br />

German <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> make up a stable percentage <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g> throughout the regi<strong>on</strong>s analysed, accounting<br />

between 8% and 14%<br />

Italian <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g>, mostly classic <str<strong>on</strong>g>films</str<strong>on</strong>g>, have their highest share in North America with 12%.

50% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all unique film titles came from regi<strong>on</strong>s other than the US, the <str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>Europe</strong>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong> and<br />

Observatory member states.<br />

With 7 450 unique film titles, EU film titles represent 14% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> film titles <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fer.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> top 5 EU film producing countries represent the li<strong>on</strong> share <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all EU titles with 85%, with British<br />

titles almost accounting for 40% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU film titles available.<br />
