If you are thinking of extending, converting, or in any way

structurally altering your home, Thames Design & Build

can assist you with any or every stage of your project. As

specialists in both architectural services and construction,

we can help you to ensure that you achieve your dream home.

Our approach is to offer both elements – architectural and

building services – thereby using our experience of each

discipline to inform the other.

We pride ourselves on our approachability and our flexibility,

so please don’t hesitate to contact us for an initial discussion,

whether your requirement is design, or build, or both.

“Thames Design and Build were great to work with and they were ahead of schedule throughout the project. Their

team was sympathetic to the impact of the works whilst we remained living in the house, and we were pleased with

the quality of their workmanship. The team is well structured, and communication was good. We were always able to

discuss issues either with Fred, the site manager, or Paul Merifield, and agree solutions quickly. The final results are

fantastic and have delivered exactly the space that we were looking for.” Robin, Kingston

Had enough

of being

overweight?

No matter how hard you have tried in the

past, The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme

could just be the answer to losing your

weight and keeping it off once and for all.

It

can be extremely soul destroying when you just can’t seem

to lose excess weight, no matter what you do. If you have

reached the stage where putting on any more weight is simply

not an option for you, then read on!

Improving your health

Being overweight is no laughing matter

when the physical strain on your body is

starting to take its toll on your health.

Your GP or your family may have

expressed their concern and urged

you to slim down – all very well if

only you knew how to!

Help is at hand to resolve your

weight problem. Rachel and her

team have helped over 6,000

clients of all ages and from all walks

of life to slim down successfully.

Many come to see her as a last resort

and are delighted to have achieved,

and successfully maintained, the weight

they want to be.

A workable programme

that’s easy to follow

The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme is a straight forward and

workable four-stage eating plan: the first two stages deal with weight

loss, while the last two stages deal with weight maintenance. This

highly successful tried and tested programme is easy to stick to and

more importantly, it works.

The expected average weight loss of clients is 7-14lb a month. As you

can imagine, clients are more than happy with this motivating weight

loss, especially for those who have struggled with their weight for so

long.

With an average

weight loss of 7-14lb

a month for clients

and hundreds of hand

written testimonials,

Rachel’s results speak

for themselves.

Rachel Ricketts, Weight Loss Consultant

Feeling and looking better

As the weight falls off, time after time clients remark how well they

feel, how much fitter they are and how their energy levels

have increased. Typical health improvements include

blood pressure, cholesterol, mental alertness, skin

conditions and even fertility.

Clients often comment on just how

impressed their doctors or consultants

are with their weight loss and health

improvements. “My doctor is very

happy - I’ve been able to come off

blood pressure and cholesterol

medication.” Another client’s doctor

said, ‘All my lady patients on thyroid

medication are struggling to lose

weight, but you’ve lost 2 ½ stone

despite being on thyroxin –well

done!’

One-to-one support

Consultations are available every 7-10

days with email support as needed. Clients

welcome the very personalised support

provided. Time and again, clients comment

that they couldn’t have lost the weight without the

support and encouragement of Rachel and her team.

For those who are not able to visit, a very successful remote support

service is provided throughout the UK and overseas. Distance is no

object!

Call now for a free consultation –

absolutely no obligation.

Martin Luther King once said that “Injustice

anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

This is particularly prophetic to the areas of family and criminal law

and in which my practice and I personally have always specialised.

Being accused of something, you haven’t done or being deprived

of a relationship, for example with your child, are prime examples

when the might of the law is required in the pursuit of justice.

At Venters Solicitors, we only specialise in Family and Criminal

Law, two areas of the law, which involve individuals against

one another and often the state against individuals.

Over the years, the law has evolved to meet the demands of

society. By way of example, we have a greater awareness of

the impact on children their parent’s relationship breakdown

has upon them and the need for their voices to be heard; we

have greater sensitivity in the courts for witnesses when giving

evidence and we have greater safeguards for members of the

public who find themselves the subject of a police investigation.

However, whilst all this amounts to an improvement to

where the legal system was some 30 years ago, without

specialist knowledge and support, those accessing the

justice system are at risk of not achieving justice. It is one

thing for the laws and rules to exist but it is another thing

to know where to source them and how to apply them.

For this reason, it is ever more important

to source specialist legal help.

Letter

We’re so excited to be unveiling a brand new event this

month at Sandown Park in Surrey. Open House,

running from 10-12 October, will encompass fashion,

lifestyle, food and drink, combined with inspirational talks

from guest speakers to form a destination shopping event that

we hope you’ll love just as much as our Wealden Times readers

enjoy our Midsummer and Midwinter Fairs. You can find out

more, and book tickets, online at surrey-homes.co.uk/events. Plus,

if you book before the event, you’ll receive a free jute shopping

bag! Turn to page 78 for a little preview of what’ll be on offer.

In this month’s magazine you’ll find our usual mix of

beautiful interiors alongside a Kitchen & Bathroom Supplement

that has been specially compiled to offer all the latest design

inspiration and help you complete your project wish list.

Elsewhere, fruit fan Laura Paton gets us into the autumn

spirit with her take on warming desserts featuring locally-picked

apples, blackberries and seasonal favourite, the clementine.

Find out how to prep your garden for winter without

compromising on colour with Jo Arnell’s expert advice and hear

how Sue Whigham’s garden plays host to a wealth of moths.

Previous pages & above: The almost black walls of the sitting

room provide the perfect backdrop for Jaz’s collection of artworks

Houses on a residential street can blend into one.

Especially if there is a row of them built as a

set at the same time – but things can be very

different within. As I discovered on a quiet road, where

a fairly modest-looking Victorian artisan’s cottage on

the outside turns out to be a wonderland within – and

you’re right in it the moment the front door opens.

As Jaz Rosten-Edwards welcomed us into her hallway, I was

so jaw-dropped I could hardly stutter ‘hello’. The walls, ceiling

and woodwork painted the rich, deep grey of Farrow & Ball’s

iconic Downpipe and the fabulous 1950s Italian chandelier

would be an impressive introduction on their own – but

then there are the artworks. They cover the walls, ceiling to

floor, both sides and all of them invite further investigation.

A mixture of original paintings, black and white

photographs, prints and mixed media pieces, all

interestingly framed, you could spend a happy hour

examining each one – and asking Jaz who they are by

and where she found them. All of which she is happy

to recount. She can remember all the details for all of

them. This is a woman with a true passion for art.

Which is why, she explains, taking me through to the

dining room – equally dramatic with Hague Blue on all

surfaces, walls covered with art works, plus sculptures

and neon – and inviting me to sit at the (genuine)

Saarinen tulip table, after a busy career in the

49 surrey-homes.co.uk

This page: In the kitchen, Jaz has painted every surface – including cupboard doors, drawer fronts and tiles – a striking ultra-dark

grey and changed the handles on the units. A lovely painting of a hare dressed in a velvet frock coat and ruff (above right) turns

out to be a water and heat resistant Ibride tray which she attached to the ugly white front of the boiler with Command strips

corporate world she came to open her own art gallery.

The trading party of the gallery is online (and

called oneoffto25.com because it sells a mixture of

original art works and prints, up to editions of just 25

pieces), but her house acts as a showcase for the works

on sale, via her Instagram account @jazzierere.

“I’ve always been creative and I decided to fulfil my dream

to have a gallery, without the overheads of a bricks and

mortar space. I post shots of works by the artists

I represent in the house on Instagram, because is shows

the art in its natural habitat and people can see them

to scale. Then they can go to the site to buy them.”

Prices are kept at the very affordable end of the art

market, ranging from £35 to £120 for a limited-edition

print and from £200 to £1,200 for a painting. This is

deliberate because Jaz is passionate about inspiring as

many people as possible to discover the joy of owning

original artworks, which is so important to her.

“I started collecting original works, because I didn’t

want to buy disposable art. Original art evokes emotions

and I want people to experience this when they choose

it. I also want to help emerging artists by giving them

exposure as well as helping them to sell their art.”

And via her online service between artists and collectors,

it is the joyful emotional aspect of choosing and owning

original artworks that Jaz wants people to experience.

“People ask, ‘what should I invest in?’ and I always say, ‘buy

it because you love it’. It has to be a gut reaction. A sacrifice

might be needed to buy it, but it’s worth it. I don’t think

it’s necessarily good practice to buy everything you want.”

This philosophy of buying thoughtfully and buying well

holds true for Jaz for every aspect of furnishing a home.

Her wonderfully rich environment – I wanted to get out a

clipboard and ask her where she had found every single

and consideration. Something she feels strongly about.

“It’s important to think about sustainability and the

impact upon the environment. I think we are moving

towards fast interiors, and fast art type purchases. There

are obvious parallels that can be drawn with fast fashion

which has tainted aspects of the industry. I believe in

buying well and buying once. Not in a snobbish way,

but if you want a unique home, accept it will take time.

Consider purchases, don’t go for instant gratification.”

This is why, while the majority of the furniture and

lighting in this home are very special vintage finds – like

that chandelier in the living room, which is from The

Old Cinema ‘antique and vintage department store’ in

Chiswick – the items they source are of very good quality.

Jaz, whilst citing another example of good quality,

indicates a bright blue velvet-covered sofa on the

opposite side of the dining room as being from

Designers Guild who produce good furniture that lasts

the test of time. “As my mum used to say, ‘the cheapest

becomes the dearest’. I think about the supply chain of

everything I buy – I try to be a mindful shopper.”

Jaz takes the same quality-matters approach to paint – a

smart move, considering the impact the strong colours

throughout the house make. Taking me further on through

what Jaz describes as ‘a long, thin house’, it’s a bit like

gloriously strolling through a Farrow & Ball paint chart. With

all surfaces Off Black in the kitchen, Studio Green (a rich

deep green) in the bathroom and the utility room. A very

bold change in a house which was all magnolia and peach

when they bought it nine years ago. “It was very safe,” says

Jaz. “But there’s no right or wrong, it’s just a matter of taste.”

But while that kind of neutral scheme was very much

not to Jaz’s taste, they haven’t done any structural work

whatsoever on the house. Very unusual in these times of

knocking through, opening out, going up and adding

on. “We had architect plans drawn up to expand

This page: Hands appear quite often throughout the house, the pair on the dining table, cast in

a young artist who Jaz represents, whilst on the opposite wall is another large painting of a girl,

more close up, by Juby Page, an artist Jaz stumbled upon by chance at an art fair in Chelsea

into the loft, like other houses on our street have done,

and have another bedroom and bathroom, but we

decided with just the two of us, we didn’t need to.”

Leaving Jaz to pour all her love and energy into the

furnishings… Which start right at the back of the house, in

the lowliest corner, the utility room, which is not only painted

that lovely colour, it has a chandelier and artworks of its

own too. As does the bathroom. Why would you leave a

wall blank, when you can hang a beloved painting on it to

admire and enjoy?

“If you are going to include artwork in your bathroom

it needs to be an oil painting, for example, so that it will

not be too adversely affected by the environment where

moisture and condensation may be an issue. I always

This page: Although painted in deep, rich tones, the bedrooms

are surprisingly airy, with light flooding in from large windows,

especially if they have not bought original art before”.

Another detail I spot here yields a fiendishly handy

tip – Jaz mixes real pot plants with faux ones. It’s a very

clever way to fill your house with greenery, without

creating an enormous plant-care workload requiring the

time and commitment needed to rear a litter of puppies.

Travelling from Studio Green to the Off Black of the

kitchen there is another genre of Jaz’s art collection to

enjoy, in very striking black and white ceramic pieces by

Jude Jelfs, who she discovered at a ceramics show – part of

the round of visits to galleries, art fairs and open studios

which are now a crucial part of her business life.

The kitchen also shows off Jaz’s inventive ingenuity.

A print of a hare dressed in a velvet frock coat and ruff

turns out to be a laminate tray attached to the ugly

This page: Prints, paintings and sculptures of assorted sizes cover the walls on either side of the staircase

white front of the boiler with Command strips.

“It surprised a plumber. He’d never seen anything

like it before, but had to admit it worked.”

She’s taken no prisoners with the rest of the kitchen

space – changing nothing physical, but painting every

surface, including cupboard doors, drawer fronts and

tiles, a striking ultra-dark grey, and changing handles.

The ceramic stool in black and white, like the Jude

Jelfs pieces, which looks like Fornasetti is one of Jaz’s

considered new pieces, from Rockett St George.

This page: Jaz mixes real pot plants with faux ones. A very

clever way to fill your house with greenery, without creating a

plant-care overload. Textures throughout this bedroom, and the

chandelier above the bed, add to its luxurious and inviting feel

slight sensory overload (of a very thrilling kind) – I notice

themes. Hands appear quite often, in two wonderful polyresin

ones on the table from Abigail Ahern, some of which are

Fornasetti and others found in a Brighton antique shop.

But the thing that really jumps out from Jaz’s wonderful

walls are faces. A large-scale painting of a girl over the

fireplace, which has a dreamy, fairy-tale quality, is by

Janet Stocker, a young artist who Jaz represents.

On the opposite wall is another large painting of a

girl, more close up, by Juby Page, an artist Jaz stumbled

upon by chance at an art fair in Chelsea. Walking

round by herself, she had seen and fallen in love with

the painting – that gut reaction she talks about. “When

I met up with my husband Mark later on, he insisted

on taking me to see a picture he loved at the fair…

and it was the same one. We had to have it.”

These are just two of the faces in this room, with several

more on the wall behind the Designers Guild sofa – including

a pen and ink portrait of a woman which I particularly

fall in love with, by celebrated artist Gill Button. “I like

faces,” says Jaz, “because I’m interested in people.”

The theme continues when we venture back

into the hall, where that floor-to-ceiling hang

This page & next pages: Pinks, greens and blues picked out in the

artworks are matched by soft furnishings. Wallpaper printed with

ornate panelling on one wall by Rockett St George breaks up the deep

grey used to paint the walls, ceiling, wardrobe and door giving an

illusion of ‘relief’

demands some serious consideration – not least the

practicalities of it. How does she hang them all?

“Hanging artworks depends on their weight. For lighter

but I tend to use nails, screws and wall plugs. I do it all

But while Jaz makes it sound as though she casually

throws her artworks up, there are other picture-hanging

skills involved to make them look as good as they do.

As we turn into the sitting room, I’m struck by two

pieces on the facing wall, which look so right together

I assume they are by the same artist. One is an old

painting, which has been painted over with the word

FAKE in large pink letters. Below it is a round painting,

on a pink background, also featuring overpainting.

But it turns out they are by two different artists (Heath

Kane and Marcie Kobernus, respectively) – and it’s

“I post shots of works by the

artists I represent in the house

on Instagram, because it shows

the art in its natural habitat and

people can see them to scale”

Jaz’s very considered placement that makes them work so

well together, especially with an oval painting on a black

background to one side and another smaller work with a

black background completing the arrangement. “There is

always a colour link when I hang pictures,” she explains.

“I colour block to create a link between each room.”

She has had plenty of practise, with the arrangements

changing and evolving as new pieces – to sell, or to add to her

own collection – come in and out of the house. You can see it

on her Instagram feed, where there are several pieces hanging

in different spots from where they were when I visited.

No wonder she’s got nearly 25,000 followers on the app.

Like her home, it’s full of interest and inspiration,

designed to offer you the absolute best

protection against burglars and intruders.

Your home represents a lifelong investment that

you will want to keep safe from potential threats.

Safety in the home, especially after a burglary for

example, can prove a worry, especially when you

are working or on holiday. Our premium security

shutters provide the ideal solution. These discreet

products will always offer you confidence, whilst

never affecting the aesthetics of your house.

Why use our services?

• Robust and durable aluminium

The security shutters can work on a ‘detect,

activate, secure’ basis. Our electronic window

shutters can be sensor-activated, so as soon as

they detect an intruder outside your house, they

activate to secure the property by closing the

shutters, which are lowered with motors, which

are seamlessly incorporated into the design.

They work both automatically or you can choose

a remote-controlled option, which you can use

when you are both inside and outside the home.

Our shutters:

• Are exceptionally strong

• Feature Eurodrive tubular motors

• Are excellent insulators against heat and sound

• Are resistant against wind and water

• Are quiet, with a reliable low-noise operation

• Feature robust security specifications

Security Shutters for your home – how do I get them

installed?

Having your internal security shutters and external

security shutters is easy. Simply follow this seamless

process.

• Once you have contacted our team, we

will ask a handful of questions about the

window, doors or areas you wish to install

shutters and the rough sizes. If you can

supply us with photos of the spaces, this is

particularly helpful because it allows us to

provide a more accurate quotation. Shutters

can be fitted on both the inside and outside

of any domestic or commercial property.

• When we have the information we

need, we can provide you with a swift,

no-obligation quotation. We pride

ourselves on our competitively-priced

domestic window shutters.

• Once you have agreed to the quotation, we will

conduct a thorough survey of your home. We

will need to know what colour shutters you

would like, as well as whether you wish for them

to be remote-controlled. They are available in

all standard RAL colours and bespoke colours

are also available at an additional cost.

• Once a final quotation has been finalised and

accepted and a deposit paid, we can organise a

date to fit your shutters. We work completely

flexibly around your schedule and can install

your new roller shutters in as little as one day.

• We install your shutters, normally around

two to three weeks after your order has

been placed. Once completed, we inspect

your shutters carefully and they are signed

off, to ensure 100 percent satisfaction.

• All of our security shutters have a 2 year

manufacturers guarantee, which protects you

against any issues. If you have any questions

regarding aftercare, we will always be happy to

answer them.

Contact us now to arrange your no obligation, free

survey and itemised quotation and have peace of

mind that your home is protected.

5TIPS

to improve your

Home Security

Lee Wells, CEO of The Security Shutter Group

Limited, explains the steps you can take to protect

your property and posessions against intruders

1Fit Security Roller Shutters. The immediate visual

effect that roller shutters have on potential intruders

can be a huge deterrent. If they are faced with a strong

physical barrier, such as Roller Shutters, they will have

to decide whether they try to smash their way through,

making a lot of noise and spending a great deal of

time, or whether to move on to easier pickings.

2Ensure that all your windows and doors are secured

with security approved locks. Burglars know how to

defeat cheap locks and are usually equipped and capable

of dealing with them. An insurance rated and approved

lock can be both a deterrent and a barrier to entry. A

qualified locksmith can help with your selection.

3Fit or update an alarm system. There is no doubt that

a good alarm system is both a deterrent and a means

of alerting you, your neighbours or the police that your

home has intruders. Alarms and detection have improved

significantly in the past few years and it is well worth

investing in a good system installed by a reputable company.

4Fit or upgrade a CCTv system. Another method

to both deter entry and alert you to the fact that

there is an intruder in your house, modern systems are

far superior to earlier versions. Now with very high

resolution cameras and direct alerts to your mobile

phone, you will be able to see who it is wherever you

are in the world and raise the alarm accordingly.

5Be vigilant! Just remember to always expect the

unexpected. Always lock all windows and doors when

you leave your home, be on the lookout for any suspicious

behaviour, ensure your fences and boundaries are secure,

particularly at the rear of your property. Hide all your

valuables, including your car keys! And i f you are going away,

don’t broadcast it for all to see on social media – be discreet!

Like the salt from a crashing wave or the soft white

sands of the Perth coastline, it’s the sense of laidback

Antipodean style that first hits you as you

walk through the door of Anna Marie Smith’s sunny

family home in leafy Horsell Common. From the subdued

yet elegant colour palette, the use of natural materials

and indoor planting, the blending of the exterior and

interior, Anna Marie has created a home that instantly

reminds one of the family’s former life in Australia.

Adventurers at heart, Anna Marie and her husband

Andy left the UK 11 years ago, along with their two small

children. They followed their dream to move to Perth, a city

they had fallen in love with when they were both travelling

the world; Anna Marie as a back-packer and Andy as a

professional cricketer. The couple built a life ‘down under’

clawing their way onto the competitive property market

through some savvy house refurbishments. The kids were in

school and Andy had made a name for himself within the

world of International Hockey becoming High Performance

Director of Hockey Australia’s National teams for men

and women. Life was sweet. However, when Andy’s dad

became ill, and following the sad passing of Anna Marie’s

parents a few years earlier, the family made the difficult

decision to return home to be closer to their families.

Landing at Heathrow, Anna Marie was staying with her

sister for a few days. Andy had stayed behind in Perth

to see through the end of his contract. “The kids and

I had just arrived in the UK, but I decided to pop into

an estate agent,” says Anna Marie, “just to see what the

market near my sister was like.” She laughs. “It was a bit

crazy as within the week we’d had an offer accepted on

this house. Andy was on his way to the Rio Olympics

with the Australian hockey teams, so he just had to trust

me. I knew good family homes in the Horsell Common

area were a bit like hen’s teeth, especially ones backing

onto the woods, so I went ahead and bought the place!”

Sitting together in the family’s elegant sitting room on

two elegant sofas from Sofa Sofa, enveloped by Anna

This page: Contrasting soft greys and deep blues continue upstairs,

unifying the landing and the four bedrooms that lead off it

Marie’s innate sense of interior style, there would seem

to be no reason why she wouldn’t have moved the family

straight in. “Oh! What you see now was very different

to when I first came to look at the place. There was no

back extension, no sliding doors, a very small kitchen and

dining area. All the doors seemed to open onto each other.

It was very dark. But I knew immediately what to do,

and luckily Andy and I had refurbished enough houses in

Perth to trust each other’s judgment.” And so, the family

moved in and Anna Marie began her next big project.

“It’s funny,” she says, as we walk from the family

sitting room at the front of the house into the sundrenched

open plan kitchen and living space that she

has created to the rear of the building. “I began this

project in order to create a family home. But as soon as

I decided to start posting my journey and the renovation

of the house on Instagram, the house became an integral

part of my new journey. I have since made so many

new friends through the renovation and posting it on

social media, it’s almost like it was all meant to be.”

Anna Marie has taken a core Farrow & Ball palette;

them back and forward throughout the house. Rooms,

hallways and landings all converse with one another,

allowing the house to open up and flow from one zone to

the next. The sitting room, the entrance hall, the open plan

kitchen, the downstairs loo, the utility and office space all

make the most of the available space. Anna Marie has also

used clever techniques she learnt developing properties back

in Perth: stripping back the floorboards, using light coloured

linens and airy fabrics, keeping pattern to a minimum and

instead opting for texture across jute and cotton rugs and

accessories. Throughout the house Anna Marie has featured

both clear glass and woven light fittings, allowing light

where possible. One of the most impressive features within

the new extension is, of course, the large sliding glass doors

by Maxlight that throw the south facing light of the garden

straight back into the house, drenching the kitchen, dining

and living area with a huge dose of sunshine and air.

We are standing in Anna Marie’s kitchen, of which she

is rightly very proud. As I am quickly discovering, she is

the queen of secondhand! “I found this kitchen on eBay.

It’s Mark Wilkinson, worth £100k. We had to drive to

Maidenhead and take it apart to move it, I then had to

reconfigure it to fit our house,” she says proudly. And

she has every right to be as the effect is magnificent: a

used to maximum effect. Tongue-and-groove panelling

that begins in the splash-back in the kitchen moves

throughout the dining area, creating a wonderful sense

of continuity between the two areas. Anna Marie has

also created a wall of reclaimed Victorian brick slips. “I

wanted it to give warmth to the room but also to echo the

rear wall of the house, as you look in from the garden.”

Through the sliding doors, the patio offers up another

shot of the family’s former Aussie life. The outdoor table

This page: Anna Marie has mixed vintage and new pieces in the guest bedroom to create an inviting and cosy space. She

found the Oriental screen behind the bed and bedside tables on Gumtree. The upholstered bed was from Arista Living

upholstery, sits beside a wood lined outdoor kitchen with a

Space Grill, a nifty barbecue gadget. You can easily imagine

many a lively Smith family barbecue. The garden itself

has been cleverly designed to make maximum use of the

space. Anna Marie has screened off a side return, behind

which sits her compact veggie patch, which she has packed

with all the essentials: herbs, courgettes, strawberries and

brassicas. A shed hides away all the garden practicalities

97 surrey-homes.co.uk

This page: Dark blue and brass have been combined

in the master bedroom with an upholstered velvet

headboard and orb-like bedside lamps

and as a sporty family, the garden also manages to play

host to a large football goal and a full-size badminton net.

Anna Marie has used a soft dark grey colour across the

woodwork and fencing by mixing a couple of different

Cuprinol paints – less harsh than black and more impactful

than grey, the colour gives the garden a smart urban edge.

Plants have been set into borders and also into metal

and wicker containers. A hidden seating nook has been

created to give Anna Marie (and her two companions,

King Charles Spaniels Bella and Ruby) a small corner to

while away what brief time her busy life might allow.

Back in the house, we discover more of Anna Marie’s

amazing secondhand finds: a dresser in the dining area

that doubles up as a bar and serving area. The utility

room cupboard has been entirely up-cycled, various

bedside tables, the wonderful palm paintings on her

upper landing, a Chinese screen that sits as a bed-head.

Wherever you turn, Anna Marie’s skill in sourcing and

re-purposing amazing finds is apparent. It is no doubt why

her Instagram account has accrued over 18,000 followers.

Upstairs Anna Marie’s interior design skills once again

come to fore. The four bedrooms all have distinct looks

and yet, once again, they have been subtly designed to

Anna Marie should be very proud. Bringing her

family back to the UK after many years spent on the

Australian coast must have been hard. But with her

inherent sense of style and space, she has created a

wonderful home for her family. A place both cosy and

chic that has most certainly looked after them all as

they returned and adjusted to a new life in Surrey.

“The main trends continue

to be marble look worktops

with either darkly painted

cabinetry or warm neutrals

(with not much inbetween).”

We’re seeing a lot of texture in the

John adds “We’ve invested in the latest

Computer Aided Design programmes to

provide our clients with an insight in to

what their finished kitchen will look like.

Our designers focus on layout, interiors

and practical considerations, as well

as materials and finishes. Our bespoke

approach means that even awkward

spaces can usually be worked around

and we can also draw upon our years

of experience to offer guidance on

everything from worktops to appliances

and storage solutions.”

The children are back at school, the nights

are drawing in and our thoughts are

turning to the changing seasons and a

new year ahead.

Karen Cowell, Marketing Manager for

kitchen designers and manufacturers, Rencraft,

reveals the design trends worth

watching in 2020...

The team are delighted to have had their

efforts recognised by others within the

industry, with one of John’s designs being

announced as a finalist in the prestigious

2018 KBB Retail & Design Awards.

“Design trends tend to be slowly evolving, they

don’t suddenly appear overnight but gently gather

pace. Some will fall by the wayside, while others

will be warmly welcomed into the mainstream.”

“Those trends that tend to have the most staying

power are the ones that tap into the mood of the

moment. As we end 2019 we find ourselves in an

era of instability, both in terms of the economic

climate and also an increasing awareness of the

fragility of the environment we inhabit. How will

this be reflected in our choices within the home?”

“To have one of our designs recognised

in this way is a great achievement,”

says John “but nothing compares to the

great feedback we get from our clients. I

know people who have had our kitchens

for upwards of 20 years, and they are

still happy with them. That’s the real

compliment, that’s the buzz, and that’s

why we’ll never 81 Calverley compromise Road, on the quality

Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN1 2UY

of what we do.” Tel: 01892 520730

“Rencraft believes homeowners will embrace the

use of natural materials, in part out of a desire

to reconnect with the natural world. We will

see more exposed wood in our homes, more

greenery, and more earthy toned colours such

as sage green, dusky pinks, burnt orange and

midnight blues paired with oak, birch, olive

wood or even bamboo.”

2020 Kitchen Design Trends

“We believe that people will strive for simplicity

too. As we become increasingly aware of our

impact on the environment there will be a move

towards minimalism rather than consumerism

and this will be reflected in the way we style our

homes. In the kitchen, storage will continue to

be important, keeping clutter at bay, so that the

surface of our lives appears clean and ordered

(even if there are still a million and one items

hidden behind closed doors!)”

“This sense of getting back to nature and of

returning to the source will express itself in a

yearning towards retro or vintage inspired

designs. Upcycling will continue to be on trend,

allowing people to welcome lovingly restored

vintage or antique furniture into their home. In the

kitchen, retro fusion will see flat-fronted cabinetry,

exposed edges and pieces of free standing

furniture sat neatly alongside the latest appliances

and smart home hubs (many of which themselves

appear somewhat retro in design).”

“After all, 2020 is also the dawn of a new

decade. The future is upon us and these nostalgic

and comforting reflections on the past will

simultaneously be tempered by our desire to

embrace certain technological advancements.

Connectivity, modern appliances and our need

for convenience to aid our increasingly flexible

lifestyles will also be important factors.”

Luscious Lips (Lip FiLLer)

With age, the lips naturally become thinner

and lose their definition, and the v-shaped

area of the upper lip, known as Cupid’s

bow, is where you’re most likely to see this

happen.

Many people try to disguise the effects

of ageing in this area with make-up, but

it can bleed down the vertical wrinkles

and highlight the problem. If you’ve been

wondering how to look younger, lip fillers

are an easy answer because they’re quick,

affordable and non-invasive.

They can be the centrepiece of a makeover

that gives you youthful looking, plump lips

and a more defined smile. Because the lips

are sensitive, we apply local anaesthetic

cream about an hour before the procedure

to numb them. Dermal filler is injected,

usually into the upper rim of the lip to

define the Cupid’s bow, and immediately

afterwards you may experience small

pinpricks for a few hours.

There is often some mild redness of the

skin, but this settles by the next day and

Health & Beauty

Long lasting

lipstick

Jo Fairley compiles her list of the juiciest, lip

plumping colours with staying power

The No.1 make-up question that I get asked,

wearing my beauty editor’s hat, is quite

simply: ‘How can I find a long-lasting

lipstick that really works?’ Most recently, this

question was posed by an elegant Seventy-something

who shares my Pilates teacher – proving not only

that you need never give up on glamour, but that

you can spend several decades trying to find a lippie

that lasts. It’s lipstick’s equivalent of the Holy Grail.

The good news is that there have been many

advances in long-lasting lipstick technology over

recent years. Used to be that the only solution

was painting on a layer of a product

called LipCote, £3.69 – a lipstick

‘sealant’ which one of my close friends

still swears by (and nary so much

as a scarlet lip-print smudges her

teacups). To me, though, this feels

quite unbearably tight on my lips –

like they’ve suddenly shrunk in the

wash and are two sizes too small.

But let me start by saying that

whatever lipstick you use, there are

tips for making it stay put for longer. It’s down to

prep – and understanding that there’s a trade-off

between gloss and endurance. You can have shine

OR staying power, but not both. (I know some lip

glosses promote themselves as ‘long-lasting’, but

I’ve never found one that delivers on its promises.)

Bobbi Brown recommends: “Apply a good lip

balm and let it absorb thoroughly before applying

lipstick. If your lips are coated with waxy lip

balm, your lipstick won’t perform well. Build

up a depth of colour by applying lipstick, then

blotting it with a tissue to leave a stain on your

lips. Repeating these steps before applying a final

coat should give you a deeper, longer-lasting

result.” (You could try applying with a lipbrush,

too, although be aware that this creates quite a

defined line and not every woman wants that

1940s Hollywood movie-star perfection in 2019.)

Another alternative is not just to outline the lips

with a pencil that matches your lips, but actually

to ‘fill in’ (a little like painting

by numbers!) the lips, with your

pencil. This creates a matte base to

which lipstick clings more happily.

Going somewhat to extremes, some

make-up artists create a ‘canvas’ for

lipstick by applying foundation all

over the lips. The next step is to take

whatever translucent powder you

ordinarily use to set your foundation;

using a small brush, pick up a small

amount of the powder and brush it onto your lips.

(Although, frankly, I find that all just too much

of a faff for the average day at the coalface.)

Product-wise though, as I say, huge advances

have been made in long-lasting lipstick technology.

The following have all hugely impressed me – more

than that, they’ve made their way into my own

kit, since I can’t really be bothered to touch

up my lipstick more than once a day, frankly.

Any of these should put a smile on the lips of

someone seeking a ‘Duracell bunny’ of a lipstick.

(And beyond that, the smile should stay put.)

Burberry Full Kisses, £24. Slightly mixed

metaphors here, but to my mind Burberry can’t

put a foot wrong with their lip offering. There’s

something about the bevelled tip of this Burberry

Full Kisses design that makes wonderfully precise

application of the full-coverage-yet-comfy

formulation, which comes in a slimline and

longer-than-usual stick. Initially, I didn’t quite buy

Burberry’s promise that you don’t need a mirror

to apply it – but funnily enough, even with a deep

grape shade like Dewberry No.549, it’s absolutely

true. (Something to do with that slant-y design.)

It doesn’t suck the life out of your lips – in fact, it’s

pleasantly moisturising, while offering a very longlasting

tint. (The satin coverage does fade, but lips

still have colour several hours after application.)

Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Crayon, £9.99.

This lives up to its name but (again) doesn’t feel

hideously tight, as so many matte products do. It’s

in a Crayola-type format, which swivels up. (If you

want to keep the nib sharp, there’s a little sharpener

in the end.) There’s also a Superstay Matte Ink Liquid

Lipstick, £9.99, in the same range – a liquid, which

you apply with the wand applicator, as opposed to a

crayon texture, if that’s more your (make-up) bag.

3INA The Longwear Lipstick, £10.94. Like the

Chanel option, this has a doe-foot applicator

and all the convenience of a gloss, but with the

intensity of a really super-charged, pigmented

lipstick. It becomes opaque on lips – but if

it’s too intense when applied ‘neat’, add a

dab and blend it for a long-lasting stain.

Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint, £19. When

Rihanna launched her make-up line, there were

queues round the block for weeks at Harvey Nichols

in Knightsbridge – and really, I’m not surprised,

surrey-homes.co.uk

118

with products like this. In packaging that looks

like The Shard, it’s featherlight, and said to offer

12-hour hold. This high impact lipstick comes in

a relatively small range of shades, right now – the

most wearable are probably Uncuffed (a rosy-toned

nude) and the fabulous scarlet Uncensored.

Chanel Rouge Allure Ink, £31. I think this is my

favourite of the bunch – but treat-priced. Almost

weightless, it glides on via the doe-foot applicator

to deliver really, really strong colour. (It’s not called

‘Ink’ for nothing.) The mix of waxes, polymers and

vegetable oils is surprisingly comfy tho’ – unlike

so many long-last formulations I’ve tried. There

are lighter shades in the range – fresh pink 168

Serenity or rose-beige 140 Amoreux – but I love

the brazenly dark options, such as 154 Experimenté

and 152 Choquant, a deep red. I apply to my

bottom lip, smoosh my lips together – et voilà.

And sometimes I pat the colour into lips for soft,

blurred edges that look really natural and ‘bitten’.

You can then use this as a base for another lipstick

over the top – and when that’s worn off, you’ll

still have great colour underneath, but on its own,

the colour stays for hours and hours. Through a

morning smoothie. Through a mid-morning coffee.

To be honest, I only feel compelled to ‘top it up’

after a vinaigrette-drenched salad lunch. (There’s

nothing short of an actual tattoo – which you won’t

catch me recommending – that’ll survive that!)

Mwah, mwah… And you’re welcome!

October is Breast Cancer

Awareness Month.

Your questions answered by the Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital.

Breast cancer is a malignant tumour that is made up of a group of cancer cells found in the

milk ducts that can grow into surrounding tissue and may spread to other areas of the body.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer, affecting over 55,000 UK women each year.

But not everything you hear about breast cancer is true, here we answer some common breast

cancer myths.

Most breast lumps are cancerous.

A lump isn’t necessarily a sign of breast cancer.

Roughly 80% of lumps in women’s breasts are

caused by non-cancerous changes, cysts or other

conditions. If you do find a lump, don’t panic but

do get it checked just to be sure.

If you’re at risk for breast cancer, there’s

little you can do but watch for the signs.

There’s a lot that women can do to lower their risk.

Including losing weight if they’re obese, exercising

regularly, lowering alcohol consumption, examining

their breasts regularly and quitting smoking.

Breast cancer always comes in the form

of a lump.

Many women examining their breasts wrongly

believe they should just be looking for lumps. Other

changes to look out for include breast skin (swelling,

skin irritation or dimpling), shape and size changes,

breast or nipple pain, nipple inversion, redness,

scaliness, thickening of nipple or breast skin and

a discharge other than breast milk. These signs

could indicate cancer but are more likely to be

non-cancerous conditions.

Mammograms expose you to so much

radiation they increase your risk.

Radiation is used in mammography, however the

amount is so small any associated risks are tiny

in comparison to the huge preventative benefits

gained from the test. Mammograms can detect

lumps well before they can be felt or noticed.

The earlier the lumps are caught, the better the

chance of a positive outcome.

Cancer Care at the Nuffield Health

Guildford Hospital.

We have an experienced team of consultants,

surgeons, oncologists and nurses providing high

quality and personalised care. If you need further

investigation e.g. mammograms, to minimise

your anxiety we aim to get results back to you

as quickly as possible. We know cancer can be a

frightening illness, so our team is here to support

you through your diagnosis and treatment. We

offer a wide variety of care and procedures for

many types of cancer if you need surgery. Our

separate oncology suite also provides a safe space

for those having chemotherapy. We work closely

with MacMillan Cancer Support and have been

awarded the Macmillan Quality Environment

Mark (MQEM). MQEM recognises we provide

a welcoming, comfortable

environment for those with

cancer. It also acknowledges

we respect visitors’ privacy,

Boost Your Immunity

Henrietta Norton explains how changing attitudes to

fermentation are having a beneficial effect on gut bacteria

F

ermenting is firmly back in

fashion these days. Not during

my 15 years as a Nutritional

Therapist has the advice of fermenting

a cabbage been so positively received.

The tradition of fermenting vegetables

was born out of a necessity to ‘preserve’

vegetables long before fridges and freezers

were invented. The most recognised of these

is the European cabbage based sauerkraut

or the Asian version, kimchi,

where cabbage is shredded and

pickled using a process called

lactic acid fermentation.

This process yields a number

of benefits, including lactic

acid bacteria Lactobacillus

Brevis or Lactobacillus Plantarum that

have a functional role in digestion as well

as the production of B vitamins, vitamin

K and the ‘breakdown’ of protein.

Indeed, Europeans have been traditionally

using these foods for anything from

maintaining a healthy digestion to

promoting immunity and treatment for

ulcers. The cabbage or vegetable itself

provides a host of nutrients that are

“ The trick is to

use it in small

amounts on a

regular basis”

preserved by the fermentation process and

prebiotic fibre to feed the good bacteria.

There are simply ways to incorporate

fermented foods into your life; add a spoonful

of saukerkraut to a winter hot-pot, baked fish,

or as an alternative to commercial pickles in

sandwiches or baked potatoes. The trick is

to use it in small amounts (a dessertspoon

would be fine) on a regular basis – too

much can make you gassy and bloated!

The homemade, traditional

version does not use heat and

is naturally unpasteurised. As a

result it produces a wonderful

diversity of beneficial bacteria.

Commercial varieties in cans

or jars are produced differently

to extend shelf life and may offer a lower

yield of bacterial diversity and strength.

So my advice is to ‘make hay while the

sun shines’ and make your own. Get creative

with various vegetables and spices (carrots,

beetroot, ginger and caraway are delicious).

Once combined they can be stored for up

to three months in the fridge, so you can

make larger batches and stockpile, adding

them into your diet as often as you fancy.

Sauerkraut

• 1 medium cabbage, finely

shredded (any type of

cabbage and even better if

mixed, but still the equivalent

amount to one cabbage)

• 1 tbsp caraway seeds

• 1 tbsp sea salt

• 1 sterilized 500ml Mason

jar (or other jar with a lid)

Mix all the ingredients

together in a bowl.

Transfer to the sterilised

container, adding some

pressure so that the cabbage

is tightly packed. This should

leave at least 1 inch between

the top of the cabbage and

the lid of the jar as the

mixture can ‘grow’ during

the fermentation process.

Put the lid on tightly and

store in a dark cupboard

at room temperature for

three days. After that

transfer to the fridge.

Saukerkraut improves with

age so you can leave it in your

fridge for at least one month.

Add a dessertspoon to salads

or use as a snack with cheese

and oat and flax cakes.

Being healthy isn’t just focusing on exercise

or diet, it’s about lifestyle and mindset,

too, as Sarah Maxwell explains

minute fitness

Prior to a summer break, many

of us think about sprucing

up in readiness for the beach,

family fun, great food and rosé tinged

evenings. Aside from removing the

winter fuzz many of us want to feel

more toned, slimmer and confident

in the warmer months. But now,

with the summer behind us and the

long dark nights arriving, lightweight

linen dresses and glittery flip-flops

are just a distant memory!

In June this year I launched a sevenday

fitness course on a Facebook closed

group showing people how exercising

for 10 minutes a day can be really

effective. Most of us struggle with the

demands of life and more often than

not our own wellbeing is at the bottom

of the list of things to consider.

For me consistency is important. By

just doing a bit of exercise

every day you can work

up to more. Try just 10

minutes and see how you

feel. If that feels good,

then by all means do

more. If 20 minutes feels

good and you can do it

regularly that’s great. If

you think you should

go out for a run but are feeling both

physically and emotionally exhausted,

then don’t push yourself – go for a walk

instead, breathe deeply and take in your

surroundings. By keeping on the move,

even if it’s just for 10 minutes, your

physical and emotional state can change.

Believe me, this is so much better for

you than punishing yourself. Feeling the

pain is not necessarily a gain! The idea

that you don’t deserve a fit body unless

you punish yourself is completely wrong.

I don’t always feel like working out,

sometimes I’m overwhelmed by juggling

family, friends and all of the things that

we feel we have to do before we even

“Finding time to

fit in things that

support my health

and wellbeing

is difficult for

me, too”

start to think about our own needs.

Finding time to fit in things that

support my health and wellbeing is

difficult for me, too. I’ve been a fitness

trainer for 30 years, I have nothing

to prove to myself or anyone else. I

don’t want to have a six-pack at 50,

I just want to make sure that I am

mentally and physically fit so I can

enjoy my life to its full capacity.

My philosophy is, be kind to yourself

mentally and physically. Do what

you can, when you can and always do

something that makes you smile. Dance

in your kitchen in your underwear to

your favourite music if that’s your thing.

Think about your whole self. If you can

change your mindset so that you view

exercise and wellbeing as an essential

part of your life and not a punishment,

you will find it becomes a pleasure.

If you have children,

then just think of the

positive body image

you are giving them by

loving your own self

and showing them that

health and fitness is

about your mind and

body for your whole

life not just for two

paranoid weeks while wearing a bikini.

I believe that ‘healthy’ is an entire

lifestyle, not just exercise or diet. It

all has to work together and it has to

work with your schedule and ability.

Success looks different for everyone

and I know we all find it hard to

remember this when we have social

media, TV or celebrities telling us

what to do and how we should live.

We are all shapes and sizes. We owe

it to ourselves and our young ones

not to conform to idealised images

of health and fitness because, more

often than not, they are either fake or

totally untrue and unobtainable.

Almond Dutch Baby with Blackberry Compote

Preparation time: 10 mins

Cooking time: 25-30 mins Serves 4

You’ll need a 25cm

ovenproof skillet pan

For the Dutch baby:

• 100g plain flour,

sifted

• 1 tbsp caster sugar

• 3 large eggs

• 150ml full-fat milk

• ½ tsp almond

extract

• 3 tbsp vegetable oil

For the compote:

• 200g blackberries

• 25g sugar

• ¾ tsp cornflour

• 1 tbsp Chambord

or crème de cassis

(optional)

• 1 tbsp water

To serve:

• Icing sugar

• Toasted almond

flakes

• Vanilla ice cream

1Remove the top shelf and preheat the oven to 220°C, fan 200°C, gas 7.

Tip the flour and sugar into a large bowl. Make a well in the centre.

Crack in the eggs and add the milk and almond extract.

2Whisk together the eggs, milk and extract then gradually incorporate the flour.

Keep whisking until you have a smooth batter. Pour into a jug and set aside.

3Add the oil to the skillet pan and place in the oven to heat up. Meanwhile,

make the compote: add the blackberries, sugar, cornflour, liqueur (if using)

and water to a saucepan.

4Place the pan over a medium heat and cook for 4-5 mins until the released

juices begin to thicken. Set aside.

5Once the skillet is hot, pull out the oven shelf and pour the batter into the

pan. (It should sizzle once it hits the hot oil.)

6Quickly close the oven door and leave to bake for 20-25 mins until puffed up

and golden brown. (Don’t be tempted to open the door too early otherwise it

will sink very quickly.)

7Dust with icing sugar, scatter with almond flakes and take straight to the

table. Serve with the compote and scoops of vanilla ice cream.

Apple Cinnamon Custard Tart

Preparation time: 40 mins

Cooking time: 30-35 mins Serves 6-8

You’ll need a 25cm fluted, loose-bottomed tart tin

For the base:

• 85g butter

• 250g Lotus Biscoff biscuits, crushed

For the filling:

• 2 red apples

• 200ml double cream

• 4 medium egg yolks

• 50g caster sugar, plus ½ tbsp for sprinkling

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas 6. Melt the butter

1 in a saucepan over a medium heat.

2Reserve 2 tbsp of the melted butter. Add the crushed biscuits

to the rest and mix until evenly coated.

Tip the biscuit mixture into the tart tin, firmly pushing down

3 into the base and sides with the back of a spoon to create an

even layer. Place the tin on a baking tray and set aside.

Core, quarter and thinly slice the apples. Arrange the slices

4 over the biscuit base, starting from the outside and overlapping

them slightly. Brush with the reserved butter.

In a large bowl, whisk together the cream, egg yolks, sugar and

5 vanilla extract. Transfer the mixture to a jug and carefully pour

over the apples. Sprinkle with the remaining sugar.

Transfer to the oven and bake for 30-35 mins.

Garden

Time for

Change

Jo Arnell explains how you can keep your

garden looking gorgeous throughout autumn

and winter despite fluctuating light levels

Light levels are changing dramatically this

month as the earth tilts relentlessly away

from the sun. There is nothing we can do

about it and we do seem to make it harder on

ourselves by changing the hour at the end of the

month. Suddenly it is dark and getting darker.

Nature doesn’t ‘rail against the dying of the light’

in the way we do. The plants and animals have just

been getting on with it; ripening wood and fruit,

making winter stores, preparing for the inevitable.

Somewhere there is a comfort in this, a regularity

and a rhythm. Without winter there is no spring.

Seasonally Affected

Autumn is a beautifully poetic season and when

the sun does shine it is at a lower angle in the

sky, so the light is softer and more golden,

enhancing tawny colours and causing backlit

translucent leaves and petals to glow. Sunlight

slants through grasses and the less dense plants,

gilding the edges and creating silhouettes.

We can make the most of these effects with

autumnal planting schemes, choosing plants that

are at their best this season, or those that die

gracefully to leave attractive seed heads and skeletal

surrey-homes.co.uk

Garden

stems – looking like the ghosts of their former selves.

Grasses come into their own in the autumn and winter.

Gilded by low light, most will continue to look lovely, easily

surviving the worst of the weather, bending and bowing in

the wind, but seldom wrecked or uprooted as other plants

might be. Calamagrostis ‘Carl Foerster’ stands tall like a golden

sentinel all through the winter, Miscanthus keep their feathery

plumes intact for many weeks, while low-growing Stipa

tenuissima will waft gently about at the front of the border.

Lower light levels can also mean that some areas of

the garden are in shade for more, or even all, of the day.

Shadows are longer, the days are shorter and gloomy

corners can feel like they are pressing in on us. There

are some cheery plants that thrive in shade, that will

lift a dull, dark area and bring interest to the darkest

of spaces. Variegated leaves or pale flowers will work

best, providing they can cope with the lack of light.

Light and colour

Playing with light effects is an interesting, rewarding and

ultimately uplifting process. Manipulation of light can

also be used effectively in planting choices to enhance the

natural effects, or even to counteract them. Colours change

dramatically in the light. Pastels and shades

of blue sing out in low light. These colours

also increase the feeling of space and light,

because pale shades recede, so that objects

seem further away. Conversely, stronger,

brighter colours advance and seem closer and

more intimate. Deep colours stand out well

in sunny conditions where lighter colours

would appear washed-out and insipid.

The changing quality of light through the day also affects

how colours look to us. Paler hues – white, pale cream,

mauve and blue – shine out at dawn and dusk, whereas

brighter colours and those at the red end of the spectrum

“Nature doesn’t

‘rail against the

dying of the

light’ in the

way we do”

– pinks, red and oranges – almost disappear in low light

and are at their clearest and strongest in the midday sun.

How plants respond to light

Plants are able to make food and grow using sunlight,

water and carbon dioxide through the process of

photosynthesis, but they have also developed

sophisticated responses to changes in both

light levels and the direction of the light.

Phototropism – or a plant’s ability to move

towards the light – is governed by the triggering

of hormones within the stems and leaves.

These lengthen the cells within the plant

that are furthest away from the sunlight, so if

light hits just on one side of the stem, it will

bend towards it and start loading the cells with chloroplasts

(where photosynthesis occurs). This is why tiny seedlings

that don’t get enough light become etiolated, growing

pale, thin and tall in their search for light. Heliotropism

is a form of phototropism shown by young sunflowers that

causes them to turn their (unopened) buds towards the sun,

tracking it as it appears to move across the sky through the day.

Photoperiodism – is the reaction that plants have to changing

day length, triggering them to grow, flower and set seed. It

is closely linked to the changing seasons and vital for plants’

survival. Some plants are more sensitive than others; those

not affected by day length are governed more by changes in

temperature, often they react to both, but the further from

the equator they grow, the more likely it is that growth and

flowering is directly related to changing amounts of light – or

rather the amount of darkness. Some plants are labelled ‘long

day’ or ‘short day’, depending on how long their nights are.

Plant breeders use this to their advantage, triggering flowers to

bloom at the wrong time of year – this is why your Christmas

red Poinsettia stays green forever after, as it needs a period

of darkness to trigger the red bracts to form for next year.

Adaptations to light and shade

You can tell a lot about a plant and where it will be happy

growing from the shape, size and texture of its leaves. Plants that

thrive in hot, sunny situations often have silver leaves to reflect

the sunlight, whereas those that prefer shadier conditions

tend to have dark green leaves, as they need to pack them with

chlorophyll in order to make the most of any available light. Along

with light, or the lack of it, comes the availability of water. Plants

from arid situations have evolved methods of conserving water. Leaves

reduce into needles in order to reduce the transpiration rate, or as in

the case of succulents, they plump up to become water storage units.

In damp shade, the quest is to get rid of water, so leaves tend to be

bigger to encourage water to evaporate from a larger surface area.

Woodland plants have evolved to fit in with the seasons, seizing

literal ‘windows’ of opportunity before leaves appear on the trees.

They flower in a rush in spring and then most disappear, or become

dormant once the dense, light-blocking canopy of leaves closes in.

Opportunists, such as snowdrops and winter aconites, even start

flowering in the winter to get ahead of the game.

Autumn planting

Early autumn is the time to be tidying up, preparing and planting

up new borders. The soil is still warm, it’s likely to rain (and save you

from endless watering) and new plants will get a chance to settle in

before too many demands are made on them. Working outside helps

us to make the most of the available daylight too. It is mood lifting –

not due just to the benefits of outdoor exercise, but to being close to

the soil, the plants, creatures and the ever changing face of nature.

Plants for shade

Skimmia japonica ‘Kew Green’ – glossy,

leathery leaves and long-lasting pale

green buds that form in the winter

and open in spring. It is scented.

Euonymous fortunii ‘Silver Queen’,

‘Emerald Gaiety’ – slow growing evergreen

shrubs with pretty variegated leaves that will

light up a gloomy corner in the garden.

Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’ – leaves are etched with

white veining and it has dainty, forget-menot-style

flowers in spring. A pretty plant.

Tiarella ‘Spring symphony’ – another dainty

plant with leaves that look a little like a

heuchera and tiny flower spires in shades of

white and pink.

Hellebores – tough evergreen leaves, adapted

for dry, shady conditions. They flower

early to make the most of available light.

Epimediums – great ground cover

plants for shady situations, especially

spreading out under trees, where

nothing much else will grow.

Plants for sun

Sedum spectabile ‘Autumn Joy’ –

succulent-type leaves. Its flowers are packed

full of nectar to attract butterflies and bees.

Phlomis russelliana – grey sage type

leaves with whorls of pale yellow flowers

that fade into stiff silhouettes in autumn

and winter. It clumps up quite quickly,

so will need space to romp…

Iris (bearded) – good strappy leaves, likes

to bake in the sun in order to flower well.

Stachys – soft felty leaves like ‘lamb’s ears’

and spires of woolly, pale pink/mauve flowers.

Cistus (Rock Rose) – evergreen flowering

in June/July with saucer shaped flowers

in shades of red, pink and white.

Sweet Dreams

Sue Whigham goes in search of the lesser-seen members of the Lepidoptera order of moths

I

know that many of us, no, all of us, when we think

of moths, have dark thoughts about clothes moths,

or at least their larvae, munching through our

favourite clothes. I know. I had to replace my bedroom

carpet in its entirety a few years ago, as well as a couple

of pretty sweaters. Mind you, we do create the perfect

environment for them in our warm, centrally heated

houses. I bet there were fewer around when we didn’t have

radiators and the ice was on the inside of the windows.

But the moths I’m thinking of are gorgeous creatures,

such as the Jersey Tiger moth my granddaughter spotted

sunning itself on a bit of Brixton graffiti a couple of summers

ago. Wow, what a beautiful creature this daytime flier is.

It’s interesting to hear that it used to be found just on the

south coast, and more specifically in Devon and Hampshire.

Now it is happy in London as we discovered. It seems that

last year was a bumper year for them – well, in Hackney at

least. It’s quite a large, very distinctive creature (52-65mm)

with creamy white stripes on its forewings and red/orange

or yellow underwings with black spots. You can’t miss it.

And so what would you grow in your garden to

encourage this moth. Their hairy caterpillars feed off nettles,

dandelions, plantain, ground ivy and bramble. All plants that

the ‘tidy’ gardener might be strimming off as we speak. The

adult moth can be seen feeding off buddleias and borage in

the late summer months, as well as plants like Eupatorium

cannabinum, or hemp agrimony, an excellent late season

border plant with its clusters of pink flowers. There are

lovely, particularly decorative forms of this eupatorium,

including statuesque Eupatorium maculatum Atropurpureum

which has the darkest of flowers and purplish stems.

Moths are in the same insect order (Lepidoptera) as

butterflies and in fact make up 96 per cent of the

group. There are approximately 2,500 species of moth in

the UK and many of them have very specific caterpillar food

plants. European native plants species like hawthorn are great

attractants for moths and it’s always with a sinking feeling that

I see new builds being planted up with fast growing species,

such as laurel, rather than a good old native hedge. And like

other pollinators, moths do a valuable job of pollinating both

wild flowers, garden flowers and crops, as well as providing a

vital food source for bats. Many moth pollinated plants have

blooms which have evolved specifically to provide nectar

in return for which the moths cross pollinate the flowers.

Most ‘moth flowers’ tend to be either white or at least pale

in colour so that the moths can spot them as dusk approaches.

These would include highly scented flowers such as evening

primrose (Oenothera) and tobacco plants (Nicotiana). Some

of them have flowers with long tubes which exclude insects

with shorter tongues! Wild honeysuckle, for instance, has

a particularly long tube which excludes smaller insects and

is tailor made for larger moths. Silenes or campions are

particularly attractive to moths. Night scented catchfly, Silene

noctiflora, has pale pink flowers and is worth looking out for

if you want to encourage moths to your garden or meadow.

They are a late summer flowerer and look good in a border

but would be growing more naturally with knapweeds,

field scabious, meadow cranesbill and musk mallow.

us with, and helped sow, some yellow rattle, otherwise

known as the ‘meadow maker’ for its ability to parasitize

the grasses and weaken their growth, several native

species have miraculously appeared this year, amongst

them scabious, betony and musk mallow. The latter’s

musky scent is particularly attractive to night flying

insects and its open pink flowers are very recognisable

flowering as they do on wasteland and field edges.

We had a local moth expert along in July, the best month

for moths by the way, and he set up a moth trap in the middle

of the lawn. We went out at about 10.30pm just to see that

it was still there! However, the connection to the electricity

must have come loose as there was no sign of light and so the

next half an hour was spent out in the dark trying out old

leads dug out from the garage. Note to self: clear garage out.

But it was worth it as when Bernard came back at 6.30am the

following morning, he opened up the trap and we studiously

inspected his night time tally despite being a little bleary

eyed. We had 51 species in there, apparently not that high a

count but it was our first go. It was so exciting to learn a little

about these fascinating and usually pretty invisible creatures

and to be able to inspect them so closely. And their names:

Thistle Ermine, Beautiful Plume, Drinker, Red Twin Spot

Carpet, Pebble Prominent, Nut-tree Tussock and so on.

Three stand out moths for their drama as well as

their delicacy were the Buff-tip, which looks exactly

like a short piece of birch twig, a perfectly developed

defence mechanism to deflect predators; the Elephant

Hawkmoth, a large and lovely pink and olive moth

whose caterpillar resembles an elephant’s trunk, and

the Poplar Hawkmoth. We had two of these.

The Poplar Hawkmoth is apparently the most common

of the hawkmoths in the UK and its appearance is

certainly arresting as it has wingspan of up to 10cm

and when it is resting it holds its hindwings above

its forewings making for an interesting shape.

Education

Forward Thinking

Simon Wong, Chartered Financial Planner at JM Finn, explains

how to plan for your child’s private school education

Are there any ways to cut the cost of a private school

education? Any aspiring parent wishing to send their

children to private school will be fully aware of the huge

cost to do so, with the average annual cost of a private day

school at around £14,000 rising to £34,000 for boarding

(Independent Schools Council). There are limited ways to

actually reduce the cost but it is always worth exploring with

the school if there are any relevant bursaries or scholarships

available, which can range from 5-50% discounts depending

on the school, so it can be worth nurturing that musical or

sporting talent. Secondly, many schools offer a discount for

paying all the fees up front. This only works if you have the

capital available but sometimes the discount is not attractive

enough to make it worthwhile and you may be better off

investing the money elsewhere. Alternatively, retrain as a

teacher and seek employment at a private school. The only

way to really reduce the cost of educating your children is

to plan for it and to ensure you

are as tax efficient as possible.

How far in advance should you be

planning financially for your child’s educational needs?

As ever, the sooner you start planning the better. I would

always recommend a young couple to start saving for

school fees if they are planning to have children, as the

sooner you start saving the more benefit you achieve from

compounding your returns. I also regularly have conversations

with grandparents regarding their estate planning and

more often than not, there is a desire to help with private

school fee funding. This can be an extremely tax efficient

way to cover the costs either by making a gift or setting

up a trust, most likely a Bare Trust. These options can, if

correctly structured, reduce the inheritance tax burden, but

all require forward planning and above all, expert advice.

“Setting up a bare trust is the most tax efficient method for grandparents to pay

the fees. The pros for this are that it is potentially inheritance tax free, can be

relatively straightforward to set up and makes use of the child’s tax allowances”

Are there any risks of school fee planning? Depending

on the route chosen, whether it’s to invest your capital in

a growth strategy or to focus on reducing a tax burden to

increase a future inheritance, there are always risks. Investing

puts your assets at the risk of stock market movements and

it must always be remembered that past performance is

no guide to future performance and as such it is possible

you could end up with less than you started off with. Tax

efficient strategies are at the mercy of HMRC as tax rules

can – and do – change, often without notice. In the current

political environment prudence in this regard is essential.

Another risk is that school fee payments are interrupted

due to the death of the primary provider. This can be

mitigated by insuring the appropriate person(s). The key is

ensuring you take appropriate advice from a wealth planner

or tax expert who can help put your school fee funding

plans into the context of your wider financial situation.

What are the pros/cons of parents/grandparents paying the

school fees? Setting up a bare trust is the most tax efficient

method for grandparents to pay the fees. The pros for this

are that it is potentially inheritance tax free, can be relatively

straightforward to set up and makes use of the child’s tax

allowances with any growth held outside of the grandparent’s

estate. The cons are the exposure to investment risk and the

fact that the child has access to the trust aged 18 which means

the assets cannot be preserved in trust for future generations.

Gifting is advantageous as it contributes to fees immediately and

can be tax efficient by using annual gift exemptions. However,

these gifts are limited to £3,000 a year per grandparent and

any gifts above this level may be taxable upon death, unless

the gift is using gifts out of normal income exemption.

Winter

Sports

Education

What’s on offer to keep pupils active during chillier months? SH speaks to Dulwich Prep

Cranbrook and The King’s School, Canterbury about the range of sports available

Mrs Jo Wilson, Head of PE and Games

at Dulwich Prep Cranbrook

What range of sporting activities do you offer through

the winter months? At Dulwich Prep Cranbrook the aim is

always to offer as many different options as possible, whilst

ensuring all children have a grounding in the mainstream

sports. Football, rugby, hockey, lacrosse and netball are the

main winter sports, alongside cross-country running. There

is also a swimming squad and an equestrian team. Children

can then choose to further their skills with after-school

and lunch-time clubs. We are very proud of the number of

elite players the school produces across all sports from table

tennis to triathlon at county, regional and national level.

Which are proving to be most popular? Sports Clubs in

Little Stream (Years 1-4) are open to all, and it is interesting

to see how many girls are joining in with football and

rugby. There is now a separate girls’ football team for Upper

School. This term we are working with two top professional

football coaches to further stretch our teams, and often

have visiting coaches in school to lead sessions. Already this

term we were joined by a hockey coach who has trained

England player Maddie Hinch, for a goal-keeping seminar.

Do participants have the opportunity to travel

outside the school for matches? Every child will play

in competitive matches, and have the opportunity to

represent their school. It is a lovely opportunity for family

to come and watch and cheer on their team and most

importantly enjoy a match tea afterwards! Most matches

are during the school day and occasionally on a Saturday.

How do you engage those pupils who may be reluctant

to take part in traditional winter sports? Are there

alternative options to keep active? Not every child will

enjoy traditional team sports, which is why the Dulwich

Inspires Wednesday afternoon programme is so important.

Children can choose from a range of exciting options – this

term includes Drawing, Walking and Talking, involving

a countryside ramble and chat; or abseiling and climbing

at a local outdoor centre. Ballet and Karate are also on

offer. Every week we hold the Dulwich Run at break time.

Open to children and staff it is a great opportunity to get

outside and blow away the cobwebs. Other alternatives

include Parkour Club, yoga and relaxation and badminton.

We also run a very popular ski trip every winter.

Education

Richard Singfield,

Director of Sport, The

King’s School, Canterbury

What range of sporting

activities do you offer

through the winter months?

Name the sport and the chances are that The King’s School,

Canterbury can offer it, or at the very least aid with training

that can augment a pupil’s talent or passion. Sports on offer

throughout winter vary from the traditional team sports of

football, hockey, lacrosse, netball and rugby to more individual

endeavours such as badminton, fencing, horse riding, cross

country, golf (making use of the indoor simulator), sailing,

shooting, squash and swimming.

Which are proving to be most popular? Hockey, rugby,

football and netball are played by all pupils throughout the

school during the Autumn and Lent terms with multiple teams

of varied abilities catered for. Beyond the school playing fields,

sports such as swimming, fencing and rowing are very popular,

helped by the great coaching and facilities on offer. A new

indoor sports facility at the school’s Malthouse site features 18

underfloor fencing pistes making it the third biggest in England.

The strong history of rowing at King’s no doubt plays a part in

its popularity with former pupils including Olympic medallists

Tom Ransley, Frances Houghton and Fred Scarlett.

Do participants have the opportunity to travel outside the

school for matches? A full schedule of fixtures against other

schools ensures all pupils have an opportunity to compete

should they wish. The school is also always prepared to

help those with special talents that go beyond what King’s

can feasibly offer. Former pupil and Winter Paralympic

skier Millie Knight (pictured) is a perfect example. Her

busy schedule required arranging time for her important

training regime and travel alongside her studies. Her hard

work certainly paid off when she returned from the 2019

PyeongChang Winter Paralympics with three medals.

How do you engage those pupils who may be reluctant to

take part in traditional winter sports? Are there alternative

options to keep active? ‘Enjoyable Sport for All’ sums up the

King’s approach. A balanced approach to winning and losing

is seen as an integral part of a rounded, holistic education.

Alongside the general sports on offer, King’s has a very

wide-ranging and popular activities programme that makes

good use of the school’s Recreation Centre. Various indoor

sports and activities such as aerobics, pilates, basketball,

badminton, and squash are available alongside a wellequipped

gym, fitness studio and strength and conditioning

room meaning there really is something for everyone.

Jane Howard’s

Fables from

the Farm

Jane explains the practice of ‘pannage’

I

love these chilly autumn mornings. With the mist in the

hollows and the grass twinkling with dew it’s magical

– especially if you’re up early. Rather quaintly, since

leaving London some 20 years ago, the time at which we

get up fascinates our non-farming city friends. When we

point out that it’s really only the dairy boys who have to get

up at an unspeakably early hour, whatever the weather and

whatever the time of year, they appear a little crestfallen.

Along with the lack of a smock and pitchfork, an

8am start doesn’t fit the bucolic image. Besides, our

Sussex beef cows would be quite genuinely surprised

to see us with the larks, although the pigs are always

ready and standing by whatever time we arrive.

But any day soon they won’t be waiting and then I’ll likely

not see them for a couple of weeks. But

I won’t be one bit concerned because the

acorns will have dropped. And nothing is

more delicious to a porker than a ripe acorn.

With about 20 acres of woodland to roam,

they could be anywhere and a session of hide

and seek is not on the agenda. Besides which

they always turn up again – fat and happy.

But fat for the right reason. All the

pigs in question are boys – an important

precaution for anyone keeping woodland

pigs in these parts. Apart from The Forest

of Dean, the Kent/Sussex borders have

more wild boar than anywhere else in the

UK. They are very shy, nocturnal creatures

so rarely seen, but having learnt the hard way I can assure

you they are about. And at this time of year solitary

males are wandering the Weald looking for romance.

A few years ago my two sows – Gloria and Sybil – were

“For hundreds

of years peasant

farmers released

their pigs into

the woods at

this time of year

to fatten up for

Christmas”

down in the woods and unbeknown to me up to no good.

By the time I saw the fleeting and fleeing back end of a

wild boar – tusks, stripes, spots, the lot – it

was too late. Some three months, three weeks

and three days later (pigs are very particular

in that department) Gloria delivered a whole

host of stripy, spotty hoglets. Fab apart from

the fact that they were wild and never came

near me. Not even for food. Catching and

keeping them proved impossible so now it’s

a strictly Boys Only policy for participation

in the autumn acorn extravaganza.

But what’s going on here is nothing new.

For hundreds of years peasant farmers released

their pigs into the woods at this time of year

to fatten up for Christmas in a practice known

as pannage. The Weald was the stronghold

of pannage in Britain. In 1086, Domesday Book records

indicate that around 150,000 pigs were being driven every

season from the Low Weald to the woods of the High Weald.

Farmers from a particular village returned with their pigs to

the same woodland pig pasture called a den year after year.

With the exception of The New Forest – and Coopers

Farm! – pannage isn’t really practiced any more but it has

certainly left its mark on this part of the world. The frequent

passage of pigs being driven to and from the dens formed

sunken tracks known as droves, connecting the dens – often

as much as 20 miles away – to their parent villages. Over

time the dens became settlements in their own right –

hence Horsmonden, Witherenden, Biddenden – and the

roughly north-south driving routes remain as a pattern of

lanes, bridleways and footpaths radiating away from the

High Weald. Quite handy for those roving wild boars!
