Each year, North State Parent celebrates the meaningful work of entrepreneurial women who have integrated their own business or side hustle into their most challenging and rewarding job: motherhood. Recognizing and supporting entrepreneurial women each October is a delight for Pamela Newman, North State Parent’s Publisher and mother of four. She is intimately familiar with the challenges and joys of being a mamapreneur and salutes the North State women “who love family and do great things to enrich our communities.” These stories of active mamapreneurs show how women can be the leaders in their own lives, expressing their unique interests and passions and using their talents to deliver valuable resources, services and products locally and with online businesses. They’re demonstrating how motherhood and business ownership can be successfully woven together with innovative business practices and nurturing environments at work and at home. While caring for their children and their business, they’re modeling responsibility, integrity, resilience and a can-do spirit that encourages the next generation to express their interests and do what they love. Mamapreneur Finding a balance between motherhood and business ownership has proven, like most things, to have its seasons and cycles. There are times when the kids need more of me, and I am happy to create that space for them knowing they won’t be little for much longer. When demands at the office increase, I try to keep those demands in perspective. It is essential to reach out for help when needed and to be honest with myself, my family and my team about what tasks I can take on. I imagine that the demands in my life are balls that I’m juggling, and only one of those balls is my glass ball—my family. In 2011 Mary brought her daughter, Hannah, to dance with Susanna Curry at Dance for Joy. After Mamapreneur elah dance academy dancing most of her life, Mary couldn’t keep her own feet still, and she soon joined Susanna as an instructor! Mary is now the owner and director of the renamed Selah Dance Academy. Hannah continued dancing and currently teaches pre-dance while still studying in the Ballet 3 class. The dance academy has grown from three or four dancers to 150 students. Selah is anticipating their usual springtime influx of students, bringing enrollment up to 170 dancers. My goal is to be the best role model I can be for my children. After two decades homeschooling, it has been gratifying to work with my daughter Chloe starting this business from scratch and to have my son Jaxon see me engaging with our community providing a service that everyone loves! I enjoy giving the random “free clean” to mothers whenever I see the need. It feels good to help those who can’t always help themselves.
