FROM THE ORLAND PARK PRAIRIE
Village’s first Brewfest an
overflowing success
From lagers to ales, craft
brewing has opened up the
industry’s wife range of
styles to beer-lovers everywhere.
Luckily for Orland
Park’s enthusiasts, the
Village of Orland Park
hosted its first beer festival
the evening of Sept. 21 at
Crescent Park.
The inaugural Orland
Park Brewfest sold out just
weeks after tickets went on
sale and brought together
the community’s beerlovers
to sample beers,
ciders and liquors from
craft brewers and distillers
throughout the Chicago
area.
The 21-and-over event
included tastings of dozens
of beer varieties from
16 breweries and two distilleries.
Guests also were
able to cast their votes
for the Drinkers’ Choice,
which included Best Logo
and Favorite Beer, among
others honors. They also
enjoyed an all-you-careto-eat
meal from City Barbeque.
Live entertainment was
provided to go along with
the food and drink. CK
and the Gray, and Fletcher
Rockwell, played a variety
of hits.
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
LWSRA smashes State
Reps in ‘visibility’ game
For a group of athletes
and Illinois State Representatives,
a friendly game
of wheelchair basketball
aimed to raise awareness
for the disabilities and
abilities of those involved
with the Lincolnway Special
Recreation Association.
On Sept. 12, State Rep.
Anthony DeLuca of the
80th District — which
covers parts of Mokena,
Frankfort and New Lenox
— held a scrimmage “visibility”
game between a
group of athletes from
the Lincolnway Special
Recreation Association
Hawks, State Reps and local
officials.
Playing for the Representatives
were State
Reps. DeLuca and Andre
Thapedi, of the 32nd District,
as well as Mokena
Community Park District
Commissioner Mike Gandy.
Keith Wallace, the executive
director for the LWS-
RA, said the purpose of the
evening was to get representatives
“into the chair”
and experience what it is
like to play a highly competitive
game, and to take
some of that experience
back to their districts.
“We want them to get
to know the people here at
Lincolnway and see what
we do on a daily basis, and
get them into the chair and
see how it feels to play a
sport with a disability,”
Wallace explained.
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Conquer College Safely
Fair to give insight to
parents and students
In the period of time between
the first day of class
and Thanksgiving break,
incoming college freshmen
are more likely to be
assaulted than at any other
point in their careers, according
to Laura Welch,
president of Will County
NOW, the organization
hosting a Conquer College
Safely Fair. To counter
and bring awareness to instances
of assault, the fair
is being presented to inform
parents and students
alike of the ways to stay
protected while away at
school.
The fair is to be held
from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday,
Oct. 5, at the Lockport
