HP wins conference title
Highland Park ended its
strong conference season
with a fitting ending: a
conference championship.
The Giants finished second
at the Central Suburban
League North conference
tournament on Oct. 2
at the Wilmette Golf Club,
but with a 5-0 conference
record during the season,
the Giants took home the
conference championship.
“I’m proud of how the
girls have hunkered down
and made it through knowing
that today was going
to be difficult conditions,”
HP head coach Jessica Berens
said.
Highland Park won the
conference championship
after finishing second at
the tournament with a team
score of 364. Deerfield finished
first with a 363 team
score while Vernon Hills
finished third with a 403
and Maine West finished
fourth with a 455.
Emilia Schwenk led the
way for the Giants with
an 12-over-82 followed
by Ally Kovitz’s 88. The
Giants finished third and
fourth, respectively, overall
in the conference tournament.
The Giants not only
battled other members of
the CSL North but also
the tough conditions. The
course was wet after rain
stormed the course over
night and it continued to
drizzle during the tournament,
creating chilly and
uncomfortable conditions.
While the scores didn’t
look the best, Berens
liked the experience her
Giants learned given that
the weather will only get
worse from here.
“We learn as we go,”
Berens said. “I’m glad it
was yucky conditions and
moving forward, we are
going to know how to handle
ourselves.”
The Giants hope to bring
over that conference success
into the postseason.
They’ll take part in the
Buffalo Grove IHSA Regional
on Oct. 10 at the
Buffalo Grove Golf Club,
where they plan on continuing
their recent lessons
and success.
“I’m so proud of them.
I know that they’ve been
working hard to come in
strong to conference and
work toward regionals,
sectionals,” Berens said.
“A lot of their goals have
been to move in and out of
regionals and to see they’re
hard work to come to fruition
is so satisfying.”
Giants impress in CSL
tournament without top golfer
Highland Park came
into the Central Suburban
League conference meet
looking to make a statement
as it prepares to make
a playoff run.
But the Giants would
have to do so without top
golfer Jared Grossman,
who was out sick for the
Oct. 2 meet at the Glencoe
Golf Club.
The Giants felt his loss
but were still able to finish
second in the CSL North
division, shooting a 337,
10 strokes behind champion
Deerfield.
“It was a tough day for
everybody,” Highland
Park coach Paul Harris
said. “Battling the conditions,
Mother Nature
didn’t hold back and made
the course very difficult. I
was happy we were able
to post really strong scores
and finish second. It would
have been great to finish
first, but at the same time,
I’m really proud of how
our guys competed today.”
With Grossman out,
Adam Meitus took over
No. 1 golfer duties for
the Giants, finishing
third overall after shooting
a nine-over-81. Ben
Shamberg led the Giants
by shooting a 79, good
for second in the overall
standings and two strokes
behind the individual
champion from Deerfield.
Alex Finger was the
third Highland Park golfer
to finish in the top 10 in
the overall standings after
he put together an 84, good
enough for sixth place. Interestingly
enough, the trio
of Finger, Shamberg and
Adam Meitus lines up his putt during the Central Suburban
League conference meet on Oct. 2 in Glencoe.
Michael Wojtychiw/22nd Century Media
Meitus all had better back
nines than front nines.
“You want to be playing
your best golf at this time
of the year, so it’s great to
see that we had three guys
finish in the top six,” Harris
said. “At the same time,
high school golf is a team
game and they count the
four lowest scores, so I
think that’s going to motivate
everyone going into
regionals, to just assume
that your score might
count and do their best.
And we did today. Guys
really competed hard, we
just didn’t get that fourth
score.”
The Giants now prepare
for the state playoffs, hoping
to make a nice run,
possibly qualifying their
entire team.
Highland Park came one
spot away from qualifying
its team for the sectional
7
meet last year, but qualified
multiple individuals,
including Grossman.
The Giants have now
seen how they can compete
without Grossman
and showcase their depth.
“We just have to try to
get better.” Harris said. “I
think at this time of the
year, people care so much
about the results but we
need to focus on getting
better every day, so that
we can play our best golf
at the end of the year. For
us, the biggest thing is not
worrying so much about
advancing to sectionals or
state and instead, focusing
on continuing to get better.
“It was great to see
Adam, Ben and Alex step
up today. When Jared
Grossman comes back
next week, if we can put
together four solid scores,
we can do really well.”
