ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
With Katie Fleming
Katie Fleming is a senior
at Sandburg, She’s on
the girls golf team and
recently helped the Eagles
to claim the SouthWest
Suburban Conference
Blue Division title.
You shot an 87 and
helped the team to
win the SWSC Blue
title on Oct. 1 at Silver
Lake. How do you
think the season went
as a whole?
I think we’ve done very
well. We are always connected
as a team and that
allows us to play very well.
How long have you
been playing golf?
I first started playing my
sophomore year of high
school. My older brother,
Dan [a 2013 Sandburg
grad] plays and he’s the
one that got me into it.
When I first started playing,
the girls were really
supportive. I practiced a
lot indoors during the winter
to get better.
Do you play any other
sports?
No. I did volleyball my
freshman year. But then I
switched to golf full time
as a sophomore because
they are in the same season.
I love golf.
What is it about the
sport of golf that
makes it the game for
you?
It’s a lifelong skill. I can
play it when I’m older.
Also, it’s based on integrity
and that’s a lifelong
virtue too. Plus, the girls
on the team are really cool
too.
What have you
learned from Sandburg
girls golf coach, Todd
Allen?
I’ve learned to stay mentally
focused and to focus
on each shot. Also, to just
push through.
Do you do anything
to pump yourself up
before you go play?
Yes. I have a warmup
song, a dance song. It’s
called “Everyday” by
A$AP Rocky. It helps get
my mind off of bad shots
and gets something else in
my head.
What is your spirit
animal and why?
A golden retriever. Because
they are playful, like
me. I always want to have
a good time.
If you could meet any
living person, who
would it be and why?
Tiger Woods. Yes, because
he’s a golfer. But
he’s also a trailblazer for
men’s and women’s golf.
Do you plan on playing
golf in college?
Wherever I go, I plan to
Randy Whalen/22ND
CENTURY MEDIA
play at least club golf. I’d
like to play on an actual
school team but it’s difficult.
That would be an
awesome experience. But
no matter what I’d be excited
to continue to play.
What’s the best thing
about being an athlete
at Sandburg?
Everyone is always
there to help academically
and athletically. So, Sandburg
really understands
and is there when you need
them. Plus, the team has a
great group of girls.
of Notre Dame,
Sandburg running star
Dylan Jacobs never figured
he was going to be
as huge as Fighting Irish
football players.
But on Saturday, Oct.
5, for a few minutes, Jacobs
was larger than life
at Notre Dame Stadium
during the Irish’s 52-0 win
over Bowling Green. He
and some of his teammates
were honored and received
some big-time adulation
on the big screen.
In March, Jacobs, Edward
Cheatham, Samuel
Voelz and Yared Nuguse
won the distance medley
relay indoor national championship.
It was the Irish’s
second DMR national title
and the track program’s
fourth national title.
Eagles 10th at ASICS
Sandburg’s girls volleyball
team received the third
seed at the ASICS Tournament
at Mother McAuley
but a tough pool draw hurt
the Eagles early.
Traditional power
McAuley, which lost to
Sandburg earlier in the
season, picked up some revenge
with a 25-18, 17-25,
25-22 pool win on Friday,
Oct. 4. That knocked the
Eagles into the silver division
of the powerhouse
tournament, which features
some of the top programs
in the nation and state.
The Eagles beat Burnt
Hill (New York) and Downers
Grove North in Silver
play before dropping a decision
to Nazareth, another
strong team that picked up
revenge on Sandburg for an
earlier loss.
Sandburg (22-4) was led
by Shelby Stefanon’s 20
kills in bracket play while
Keegan Carey added 18.
Two-time Class 4A defending
champion won the
ASICS title with a 25-22,
28-26 thriller over Skutt
(Nebraska).
Golfers continue to shine
Sandburg’s girls golf
