DISASTER RECOVERY REPAIR PROGRAM IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County’s Disaster Recovery Repair Program is assisting homeowners in the Northwest Harris County area who
have experienced damage from a disaster since August of 2017.
“As we continue to work in our community, we have realized there are still so many who have unmet needs. We are continuing to serve families across
the county who have been effected by the devastating disasters since August 2017.” Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris
County, Soleil Watt, said. “After an outpouring of emails and phone calls from homeowners who have shared their positive experience with us, we are
so excited for this program’s continuation.”

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD College Night 2019 will be held Tuesday, October
8 th and Wednesday, October 9 th at the Berry Center from 6-8 PM (please
note the later start time this year).
All 9 th -12 th grade students and their parents are invited to attend this

universities, technical and specialty schools as well as all branches of the
military and the US service academies.
NEARLY 400 VOLUNTEERS PARTICIPATE IN 2019
BUS BUDDIES PROGRAM
A total of 390 community volunteers assisted new CFISD bus riders in
safely reaching their proper drop-off points as part of the 13 th annual
CFISD Bus Buddies program, August 26 th -27 th . Bus Buddies rode CFISD
school buses from 2:45 PM to 5 PM during the first two days of school,
assisting bus drivers with the transition back to school.
“The Bus Buddies program motivates hundreds of volunteers from the
CFISD community, Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce and Adopta-School
partnerships to keep our students safe as they adjust to their
school year routine,” Bevin Gordon, director of marketing and business
relations, said. “We are always grateful for this incredible community
collaboration.” In addition to community volunteers, 83 businesses and
organizations participated in the program.
CFISD’S CAMP SUMMIT EARNS
DISTRICT OF DISTINCTION AWARD
Camp Summit, a primary literacy program for kindergarten through
second-grade students, was recently named a District of Distinction
award winner by District Administration magazine.
Camp Summit was established in 2014 and prioritizes prevention over
remediation to address an observed decline in reading achievement.
The camp helps any CFISD kindergarten, first- and second- grade student
who lack reading readiness or struggle to keep pace. Students receive 23
full days of instruction and all students get books to take home daily to
practice their reading skills.
“We are honored to be one of the 34 districts from across the country
to receive the 2019 Districts of Distinction award for Camp Summit,”
said LaTisha Bard, coordinator for primary curriculum. “This award

pays tribute to the hard work and dedication of our staff, administrators
and Board of Trustees who have supported Camp Summit for the past
six years. We look forward to continuing our work with our youngest
learners to help them become more proficient and confident readers.”
Based on 2018 enrollment data, 96 percent of students experienced
no “summer slide” in reading levels and 84 percent of students
demonstrated growth of one or more reading levels.
“These districts have developed innovative programs to support
students in their education and well beyond the classroom,” said JD
Solomon, editorial director of District Administration magazine. “We
hope our readers are inspired by the efforts of these honorees to create
successful initiatives in their own districts.”
Districts of Distinction was established by District Administration
magazine to honor school districts that are leading the way with new
ideas that solve challenges. Honorees are selected based on quantifiable
results and the replicability of their initiatives. The July 2019 Districts
of Distinction honorees were selected by the magazine’s editors from

WALKS/RUNS
BRIDGELAND FUN RUN/WALK FOR HEROES
This Bridgeland Fun Run/Walk for Heroes will be held October 19, 2018,
at 8 AM at the Lakeland Village Festival Park in Bridgeland in Cypress, TX.
Please register for the event at bit.ly/heroesfunrun2019.eventbrite.com.
The event will include an 8 AM 5K walk/run and a 9 AM children’s 1K
run thru the Bridgeland’s beautiful parks & lakes along with booth &
food vendors, a bouncy house, a rock climbing wall, entertainment
and activities for the children. The children’s walk is open to strollers
and wagons. Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 male and female 5K
runners. Medals will be awarded to all children under 10. 1 st , 2 nd & 3 rd
place prizes will be awarded to the winners of the Children’s Super Hero
Costume Contest.
Make Sure You Honor your Military Hero by giving us the name of the
veteran or active service member you would like to honor and we will
create signs along the race course to honor their service.
The Race is sponsored by The Bridgeland Community Supports Veterans,
Inc., which is raising funds to support veterans, educate our children and
build a Veterans Memorial in Bridgeland.
9 TH ANNUAL FAIRFIELD TRIATHLON
Sunday October 27, 2019, 7 AM start
The triathlon features both a triathlon and a duathlon for participants.
Triathletes will swim 300 meters in North Bradford Lake. Then ride a ten
mile bike course followed by a three mile run along the trails of Fairfield.
Duathletes will start with a one mile run around both Bradford Lakes,
then a ten mile bike followed by the same three mile run course as the
triathletes.
All participants will receive dry fit shirts, finisher medals, age group
awards, post-race party with refreshments and a finish line photo.
Individuals will compete for awards in five-year age groups.
The race site is located in Cypress, Texas in the Fairfield Community.
Headquarters is the Fairfield Athletic Center on Mason Road with the race
site just up the street at the lake.
The event accepts both individual entries and relays. Relays consist
of three athletes with each doing one segment of the race. There is
a minimum age of twelve years of age to compete in the event. The
event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and will follow their rules and
guidelines.

WINGS OVER HOUSTON SET FOR OCTOBER 19 TH -20 TH
One of the most popular events for kiddos is at Ellington Airport: CAF Wings
Over Houston. One of the top air shows in the United States, this event is
dedicated to showcasing vintage World War II aircraft, along with the thrills
of modern aviation. The event has supported a variety of local and national
charities during its 35-year history. General admission tickets at the gate are
$45, but can be purchased online for $32.50. There is also an insider-only price

provides admission for one adult and six children (under age 14). The airshow

The Cy-Woods Crimson Cadettes Drill Team will host their 14 th Annual

Come sit with a cadette in the stands during the October 19 th game at 7
PM at The Berry Center. You will sit next to a cadette, you will learn game
chants and a stand routine. You will be able to see the cadettes perform
pregame and their halftime dance.
Parents will bring their daughter/son to the game at 6:15 PM and go to
the cadette stands (you will have to buy ticket into game). You will then
be assigned to a cadette. They will stay with the cadette during 1 st , 2 nd
and 3 rd quarter. Parent will then pick their child up at beginning of 4 th
quarter from the cadette and may spend the rest of the game with family

Caramel Pecan Delight

NATIONAL DESSERT OCTOBER 14TH!
Ingredients
1 (16 ounce) package pecan cookies, crushed
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 (12 ounce) jar caramel ice cream topping, divided
1 1/2 cups cold milk
1 (5.1 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
3/4 cup chopped pecans
Festive Foods for Halloween
Here are some simple ways to spice up everyday foods:
1. Put a licorice straw into the breakfast orange juice and pack an orangedyed
hard-boiled egg in the lunch box.
2. Make American cheese the sandwich of the day and cut a pumpkin
shape onto the top slice of bread.
3. Poke cloves into an orange to make a smiling pumpkin face - or just
draw one on with a marking pen.
DIrections
In a bowl, combine cookie crumbs and butter. Press into a greased 13-in.
x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish. Bake at 375 degrees F for 10 minutes. Cool on
a wire rack.
In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and 1/2 cup caramel topping
until smooth. In a bowl, whisk milk and pudding mix for 2 minutes; fold
into cream cheese mixture. Spread over the cooled crust. Sprinkle with
pecans. Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours. Cut into squares;
drizzle with remaining caramel topping.

Chocolate Fudge Cupcakes

Ingredients
4 (1 ounce) squares semisweet chocolate, chopped
1 cup butter
1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
1 3/4 cups white sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups chopped pecans
DIrections
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Line 24 muffin cups with
paper liners. In the top of a double boiler, combine chocolate and butter.
Heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture is melted and smooth. Remove
from heat and allow to cool to lukewarm.
Sift flour and sugar together into a large bowl. With mixer on low speed,
beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in chocolate mixture, vanilla and pecans.
Fill muffin cups 2/3 full.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Do not overbake. Tops should
be shiny but give slightly when touched. Add your favorite frosting!

Gardening Tips For October
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry
in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control
fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose.
• Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going
to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants
concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart
they can get before summer, the better.
• October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies.
• Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown
patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather.
Control with Daconil.
• If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth
stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of
Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead,
weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size
and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60
degrees.
• Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and
transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better.
• Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations.
• Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with
the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two
applications are usually needed, even if done this early.
• For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.
