48 Life as a governor For James Pearson, joining the board of governors at Winstanley College was a way to give back to the college that launched him onto a career path in commercial law. James, now the Chair of Governors, discusses the inspiration behind his decision, and what it takes to strive for academic excellence at Winstanley. ‘I had a really good time at college,’ James admits. ‘Winstanley prides itself on providing a well-rounded education, with a focus on personal development that goes beyond grades. It was important for me to begin giving back to that community.’ As a player at Orrell RUFC, James isn’t short on community spirit. ‘Keeping it local, at the college I used to attend, was also really important to me in my decision to apply for a post as governor. I admit the interview process at the time was rather daunting, but has changed now, and was worth it when I was offered the position.’ pride in their work, and it’s amazing to see the result of their time at Winstanley pay off in their final pieces.’ ‘I’ve been fortunate to meet many talented people who have really ingrained themselves in the world of education, and who have a passion for seeing young people achieve their goals,’ he tells me. ‘There are three core skills I think you need to become a governor,’ James adds. ‘You can’t be afraid to ask questions; you need a willingness to learn and challenge yourself; and you need to care about creating a supportive and inspiring community for academic excellence.’ If you are interested in applying to become a Governor at Winstanley College please contact Rachael Weir on 01695 628640 or email Rachael. weir@winstanley.ac.uk. Being a governor means setting Winstanley’s strategic direction, ensuring financial sustainability and to uphold the college’s core values. James’ background as a lawyer has also helped him in his role. It’s a big job – but well worth the effort. ‘One of the best parts of my position has been engaging with passionate staff and amazing students. I’m not an arty person myself, but the annual student art show is always excellent to pay a visit to. The students take such
