TREE TRIMMING 

The trees around the entrances, lake and park areas have been trimmed. 

The progress can be seen in the pictures. Pictures of the completed 

trimming will be included in the next newsletter.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN REVIEW 

As promised, we will now be including parts of the Architectural Design 

Review in the Monthly Newsletter to keep our residents more aware of 

them. Following are the rules for Submission of an Application. 

The Committee shall consider the following factors upon the review of 

each application for an exterior change, addition or improvement:

1. The quality of construction and materials, colors, exterior design 

(elevations) size (dimensions) and location, all of which must be 

harmonious with existing and other proposed structures. 

2. The location must not violate the building set back lines, utility or 

drainage easements as shown on the official recorded plat or any other 

provisions of the Declatration. 

Note: The Committee may not grant permission to place an improvement 

upon or across any utility easement; consent to encroach upon any utility 

easement must be obtained in writing from the owner of the easement 

(i.e., utility companies). 

3. Improvements other than the main residence and garage may not 

exceed eight (8) feet in height (except as otherwise provided by the 

Declaration of Guidelines). 

4. Improvements which exceed two (2) feet in height may not be located 

closer to the front lot boundary line that the front of the main residence or 

garage (except as otherwise provided by the Declaration or Guidelines). 

5. Improvements which are intended for other than single-family 

residential purposes or which may become any annoyance or nuisance 

to the neighborhood are not permitted. 

6. Improvements must be located so that their use will not infringe upon 

the enjoyment of neighboring amenities nor place neighboring property 

at increased risk of damage.

The Committee may also consider the provisions of the Declaration and of 

applicable statues, ordinances and building codes. However, approval of 

an application shall not be construed as a warranty or representation by 

the Committee that the change, addition or improvement, as proposed 

or as built, complies with any or all applicable statues ordinances or 

building codes or as a warranty or representation by the Committee of 

the fitness, design or adequacy of the proposed construction.

HOWDY NEIGHBOR! IMPORTANT NOTE: 

Thank you to those who have cleaned your bronze street number plate 

on your home exterior. PLEASE make sure your house number is visible 

from the street. You might need to lower the shrubs that are blocking the 

visibility of your house numbers. Or polish/clean the plate. This is very 

important because in the event an emergency vehicle needs to find you 

and can’t, it might be critical in time lost. 

RESIDENTS: 

It has come to our attention that many residents are leaving their 

grass clippings and shrub clippings out on the curb for days before the 

assigned trash pickup. Our trash days are on Monday and Thursday. 

Either change your scheduled yard mowing to coordinate with the trash 

days OR remove the grass and tree trimmings to the back of your fence 

or in your garage until the evening before trash pick-ups. It is a deed 

violation to leave your grass clippings or tree branches out days early. 

DON’T SWEEP OR BLOW GRASS CLIPPINGS INTO THE STREET GUTTERS. 

It clogs our drainage system.

1. Maintenance of fences: Pickets, rails or bars that are broken or peeling 

paint, warped, bent, sagging or which have otherwise deteriorated must 

be promptly repaired or replaced.

the Committee’s approval so long as the lighting is located within flower 

beds, shrubs and/or trees and all of the wiring is buried. All landscape 

lights must be white in color. The Board reserves the right to require the 

removal or modification of lights which it reasonably determines to be 

annoying to neighbors. (i.e. shining in neighbors windows; lights on all 

night; too bright of wattage) 

3. Birdhouses: Birdhouses shall be permitted without the approval of the 

committee subject to: it must be installed in the rear of the lot only; no 

birdhouse shall be larger than two feet in width, two feet in length and 

ten feet in height; the birdhouse can’t be visible from the street in front of 

the lot; the materials and colors must be harmonious with the home and 

other improvements on the lot. 

4. Garage Conversions: No conversions of any kind will be allowed. 

Detached multi-story garages shall not be acceptable. No carports shall 

be acceptable. 

5. Window Coverings: All window coverings (i.e. drapes, blinds, shades, 

etc.) which are visible from the exterior of the residence must be a 

neutral, earth-tone color which must also blend with the exterior color 

of the home. “Temporary” coverings (i.e. sheets, blankets, towels, etc.) 

must be removed within 30 days of closing on the sale of the lot. Paper, 

foil, cardboard or other “non-standard” window covering materials are 

prohibited for temporary OR permanent installations.

you need to know. If the sidewalk is sinking around SANITARY sewer

Fall Product Program. By participating in this program, troops get a head

through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which

Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout 

Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old)

Boy Scout Troop 609 is a specialized for Boys with high functioning 

Autism Spectrum Disorders. They meet at the Westview School on the 1 st 

and 3 rd Saturday of the month from 9:30-11:30 AM. 


Troop 838 is a small pack located near Hwy 6 and West Road at the 

Crossbridges Church. We are between the Copperfield and Aberdeen 

neighborhoods. Being a smaller troop allows us to be flexible and address 

the needs of our scouts more nimbly. We currently have boys from ages 11 

to 17 within our group working to make Eagle. We try to camp monthly, 

with a wide variety of locations on our agenda. The different locations are

TROOP 1865 

Troop 1865 runs a diverse program of outdoor and service activities, 

with events selected by the scouts themselves. We meet Mondays at 6:30 

PM, at the Copperfield HOA building on Willow River and Hwy 6, behind 

Labay. We’ve gone backpacking through the National Forest, rappelling 

off Enchanted Rock, Survival camping, boating, canoeing and anything 

else the scouts can dream up. We do high-adventure camping at 

Philmont and Seabase. Our advancement program has enabled scout to 

achieve the coveted rank of Eagle Scout at 10 times the national average 

rate. We see scouting as a practice run on adult life. Scouts learn about 

leadership and teamwork through having to work together in the field. 

We learn about responsibility through fund-raising activities that have 

allowed the entire troop to pay for their own summer camp each year. 

CUB SCOUT PACK 2 

We are an active year round pack for Kindergarten-5 th grade that focuses on life 

skills, teamwork, leadership and FUN! Cub Scout activities include camping, 

fishing, pinewood derby, hiking and much more! During the school year we meet 

on the 3 rd Monday of each month at 7 PM at Birkes Elementary in the cafeteria.

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 

61 at 7 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks 

Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience 

of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the 

Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has 

done during meetings and activities. Scouting activities include camping, 

fishing, archery, rifle/shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, 

community service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting 

and much more. Troop 61 camps each month and has a group that goes to 

High Adventure Camp and to Merit Badge Camps each summer. Meet 7 to

EXECUTIVE ANNOUNCE THE BIRD OF HOUSTON 

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner alongside Houston Audubon’s Executive 

Director, Helen Drummond, proclaimed the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron 

as the official Bird of Houston. In an effort to increase awareness of the 

birds around us, Houston Audubon coordinated the Bird of Houston 

contest, where Houstonians voted on their favorite local bird through a 

series of bracket rounds. Over 60 bird species were originally nominated, 

leading to the final round, which pitted the Attwater’s Prairie-Chicken 

against the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. 

Houston’s location on the central flyway is a vital stopover for migratory 

birds and a welcoming, year-round, home to our resident bird. Not 

only do birds need our city to thrive, but Houston needs a healthy bird 

population. Birds are essential to human welfare thanks to the many 

ecosystem services they provide, from pollination and pest-control, to 

clean-up and seed dispersal. A representative Bird of Houston is just the 

thing to connect our residents to their avian neighbors. 

The Bird of Houston announcement coincides with Houston Bird 

Week celebration from September 21 st until September 28 th , in honor 

of Houston Audubon’s 50 th anniversary. Houston Audubon’s Young 

Professionals Advisory Council in collaboration with local conservation 

partners have created educational, fun and celebratory events across the

Creamy Spicy Guacamole 

You could make this on National Spicy Guacamole Day November 14th! 

INGREDIENTS: 

3 large avocados - peeled, pitted and diced 

1 tomato, seeded and chopped 

2 green onions, finely chopped 

1/2 lime, juiced 

1 tablespoon salsa or more to taste 

1 clove garlic, minced 

1 teaspoon sour cream 

1 teaspoon white vinegar 

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 

1/4 teaspoon cumin 

Salt and ground black pepper to taste 

DIRECTIONS: 

Mash avocado in a large bowl. Stir tomato, green onions, lime juice, salsa, 

garlic, sour cream, vinegar, cayenne pepper and cumin with the mashed 

avocado until evenly mixed; season with salt and black pepper. Cover bowl 

with plastic wrap and refrigerate until the flavors blend, about 30 minutes.

Three Cranberry Relish 

You could make this on National Cranberry Relish Day November 22nd! 

Ingredients: 

1 pound cranberries 

1 (12 fluid ounce) can frozen cranberry juice concentrate 

1 1/2 cups sweetened-dried cranberries 

1/4 cup orange juice 

2/3 cup white sugar 

1 tablespoon orange zest 

Directions: 

Combine all ingredients in a 3-quart saucepan and cook over medium 

heat until cranberries pop. Serve warm or cold. As it the relish sits it 

thickens up.

Gardening Tips For November 

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low 

areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. 

It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to 

eliminate those low spots. 

• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow 

on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. 

• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. 

• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. 

• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now 

will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and 

allow to mellow. 

• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. 

• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; 

they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. 

• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. 

• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
