Mission Statement 

Varsity Monthly Thumb Area (“VMTA”) is dedicated to the recognition and advancement of high 

school athletics in Michigan’s Thumb region. VMTA, created in 2014, is a monthly sports magazine, 

which displays achievements of local high school athletes, primarily through high quality photography. 

At the heart of the Varsity Monthly mission is the support of local students, and our high school athletic 

departments, in an effort to preserve physical health, competition through sport, and the development of 

strong, well-rounded future leaders. Our various professional photographers attend games and/or events 

in each of the 17 communities that we cover, each month. We then display these photographs of as many 

athletes as possible, through our monthly publication, website and facebook page. VTMA highlights a 

male and female standout athlete each month on our “Players of the Month” page. We are joined in this 

awesome mission by a wealth of local businesses who support our youth by advertising in our publication, 

on the page/s of their selected locality. The magazine would not be possible without these great 

supporters and ask that you keep our advertising customers in mind for your local business needs. We 

display the advertisements in the magazine, on our website and on our facebook page to provide them 

with maximum exposure. We also award a customer each month with our “Advertiser of the Month,” 

providing local business owners with an opportunity to reflect on the impact of high school athletics in

Players Of The Month 

Varsity Monthly Thumb is proud to announce our new sponsor for the Players 

of the Month, VG’s Grocery of Caro. Now, not only will the players of 

the month be featured in the magazine and recieve a stunning Player of the 

Month T-Shirt, VG’s will also provide each athlete with a $25 gift Card!! 

Sean Quade has long been counted on to distribute the basketball to Marlette’s 

big men. But this year the senior point guard is being asked to handle more of the 

scoring load. 

The Red Raiders have seen their share of big, high-scoring post players in recent 

years – guys like 2017 graduates Barrett George (6-foot-5), Isaac Dale (6-foot- 

5) and Ethan McKenney (6-foot-4) and recent transfer Bryce George (6-foot-6). 

Quade has responded by leading the Red Raiders in scoring, averaging over 18 

points per game after Marlette’s first five contests. He scored a career-high 31 

points Nov. 30 in an overtime win at Caro. 

Quade, who also plays baseball and soccer for the Red Raiders, was an all- 

Thumb basketball selection as a junior. Way to go Sean! 

Sean Quade 

It seems like Taylor Findlay has been bringing the ball up the court for the Reese girls’ basketball team 

forever. But in reality, it’s only been four years. Findlay burst onto the scene as a freshman, taking over the 

ever-important point guard duties for a Reese team that battles each season for regional and conference 

titles. During her four-year tenor, expectations might be highest this year. 

Although state rankings won’t be published until after the new year, the Rockets are sure to be listed 

among the state’s elite teams as they have started the season with four consecutive 

wins – and have the talent and pedigree to earn a spot. Reese has captured 

a Greater Thumb West championship in each of Findlay’s first three seasons, 

and the last 10 titles overall. Findlay has done her part, and has the postseason 

accolades to show for it. 

As a freshman, she was named honorable mention all-Thumb. As a sophomore 

she made the all-Thumb second team and was honored as an honorable 

mention selection to the Class C AP All-State team. And last year, Findlay 

earned first-team all-Thumb honors while capturing a second honorable mention 

all-state award. Findlay, who also plays volleyball, has narrowed her list of 

college choices to Alma College and Adrian College. She said she looks forward 

to playing basketball at the next level and attributes her success to her coaches, 

parents, teammates and trainer. We wish Taylor the best of luck!
