Mission Statement<br />
<strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> <strong>Thumb</strong> Area (“VMTA”) is dedicated to the recognition and advancement <strong>of</strong> high<br />
school athletics in Michigan’s <strong>Thumb</strong> region. VMTA, created in 2014, is a monthly sports magazine,<br />
which displays achievements <strong>of</strong> local high school athletes, primarily through high quality photography.<br />
At the heart <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> mission is the support <strong>of</strong> local students, and our high school athletic<br />
departments, in an effort to preserve physical health, competition through sport, and the development <strong>of</strong><br />
strong, well-rounded future leaders. Our various pr<strong>of</strong>essional photographers attend games and/or events<br />
in each <strong>of</strong> the 17 communities that we cover, each month. We then display these photographs <strong>of</strong> as many<br />
athletes as possible, through our monthly publication, website and facebook page. VTMA highlights a<br />
male and female standout athlete each month on our “Players <strong>of</strong> the Month” page. We are joined in this<br />
awesome mission by a wealth <strong>of</strong> local businesses who support our youth by advertising in our publication,<br />
on the page/s <strong>of</strong> their selected locality. The magazine would not be possible without these great<br />
supporters and ask that you keep our advertising customers in mind for your local business needs. We<br />
display the advertisements in the magazine, on our website and on our facebook page to provide them<br />
with maximum exposure. We also award a customer each month with our “Advertiser <strong>of</strong> the Month,”<br />
providing local business owners with an opportunity to reflect on the impact <strong>of</strong> high school athletics in<br />
their lives and businesses, and the reason they support youth athletics in the <strong>Thumb</strong>. Thanks for visiting<br />

Players Of The Month<br />
<strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> <strong>Thumb</strong> is proud to announce our new sponsor for the Players<br />

Since the 2017 football season ended, which for Millington was in the Division 6 quarterfinals, there<br />
was no doubt that Jack Shreve would be the go-to running back for the Cardinals in <strong>2018</strong>.<br />
The Millington coaching staff knew it, Shreve knew it, and Millington’s opponents knew it.<br />
But even as the prime focus <strong>of</strong> opposing defenses, the senior has still put up eyepopping<br />
numbers.<br />
Through the first eight games <strong>of</strong> the season, Shreve has been the workhorse for<br />
the Cardinals’ <strong>of</strong>fense, rushing for 1,114 yards on 183 carries. He’s rushed for 15<br />
touchdowns and scored another TD in a win over Bridgeport when he blocked a<br />
punt, picked it up, and ran it 60 yards to the endzone. Last season, Shreve shared<br />
carries in a loaded Cardinals’ backfield with talented backs Briar Bearss and Kohlton<br />
Sherman, but still earned second-team all-<strong>Thumb</strong> Sportswriters Association<br />
honors. He was also a first-team all-Tri Valley Conference East selection.<br />
Jack also stars as a defensive end for Millington, which was 5-3 after Week 8<br />
and needing a victory over undefeated Warren Michigan Collegiate in the regular<br />
season finale to clinch its 15th consecutive play<strong>of</strong>f appearance.<br />
Shreve looks forward to playing football in college although he is undecided on Jack Shreve<br />
a college choice right now. His other hobbies include video games and spending<br />
time with friends and family. He credits his parents, coaches and teammates for his success.<br />
When you look at Haili Gusa’s pr<strong>of</strong>ile on her athletic.net (the premier site for high school cross country and track<br />
and field) homepage, you will notice a lot <strong>of</strong> 1’s next to the races she’s competed in. There are, in fact, 24 <strong>of</strong> them, with<br />
each one representing a race that Gusa has won. With her senior season winding down, the Ubly cross country phenom<br />
is hoping to add a few more 1’s to her pr<strong>of</strong>ile. Already in <strong>2018</strong>, Gusa has galloped<br />
to first place in the USA Invite, Bad Axe Hatchet Invite, Reese Invitational and Huron<br />
County Meet. And the best part <strong>of</strong> the season is yet to come, with the <strong>Thumb</strong> Area<br />
Cross Country Meet, Regionals and state meet right around the corner. At those meets,<br />
on cross country’s biggest stage, Gusa has shined the brightest. At the <strong>Thumb</strong> meet,<br />
Gusa placed second in her freshman and sophomore years and first last season. She<br />
improved by one spot in each <strong>of</strong> her Division 4 regional meets, taking third as a freshman,<br />
second as a sophomore and winning a regional championship as a junior. Gusa<br />
will complete her high school cross country career at the Division 4 state meet Nov. 3 at<br />
Michigan International Speedway, where she already has three all-state performances<br />
to her credit.<br />
Haili plans on running at Western Michigan University and will major in communications<br />
, and minor in psychology. She also enjoys playing volleyball, basketball, and<br />

reading. She thanks her parents and Busia for supporting her along the way. She also<br />
credits her cross county coach, Garrett jurges, and track coach, Pat Bolda, and Rob Hayes for her success in running.<br />
