East Point,
Nahant’s Gem
By Deborah Vanderslice, on behalf of Keep Nahant Wild
East Point is a very special place, and
its beginnings can be found in the
earth’s evolution. The oldest rocks
at East Point are located at Lodge Park,
formed by sedimentary layering originating
on the sea floor approximately 550 million
years ago, during the Cambrian Period. The
Cambrian Period produced the most intense
burst of evolution ever known, leading to the
emergence of an incredible diversity of life,
including many major animal groups alive
today. East Point’s rock formations consist
of limestone and mudstone layers; unique
fossils can be found in these rock formations,
including some of the oldest shelled
specimens in the world.
Steeped in history, archeological records
indicate East Point was first home to Native
Americans, long before English settlers
arrived in the 1600s. By the 1800s, East
Point began to earn a reputation as a resort
area, boosted by the building of the stately
Nahant Hotel which opened in 1823
During World War II, the Army built
three gun batteries at East Point, as part
of the Boston Harbor Military Defense
installation. The Army base closed in 1961,
and the land was ceded to Northeastern
University and Nahant. In 1967, Northeastern
University built its Marine Science
Center at East Point, and in 1986, the Town
of Nahant established The Henry Cabot
Lodge, Jr. Memorial Park. In 1994, Nahant
residents demonstrated their reverence for
natural beauty by raising funds to restore
Lodge Park.
Nahant’s beloved East Point is the last
undeveloped headland between Boston
and Gloucester. It juts out into the bustling
Atlantic surf, with rocky cliffs and
spectacular views in every direction.
The ecosystem at East Point is a diverse
one, from shoreline to meadows, fields,
shrubs, trees, hills and a valley. Many
species of plants and animals can be found
along East Point’s rugged terrain. As such,
it is no wonder that Louis Agassiz, the
famed Swiss-born, American naturalist, geologist
and teacher, who made contributions
to the study of natural science with landmark
works on glacier activity and extinct
fishes, opened a marine lab out of a cottage
he built on the island in 1851, in order to
study East Point specimens. This lab was
one of the earliest known marine labs in the
United States, and contributed to Agassiz’s
important work demonstrating scientific
proof of the Ice Age.
Today, the diverse flora and fauna of East
Point are instrumental in attracting birds,
bees, and butterflies. Monarch butterflies
find an important habitat at East Point,
where milkweed and wildflowers grow. In
September, the fields are full of fluttering
black and orange wings as the majestic
Monarchs feed in preparation for their long
flight to Mexico where they winter. There
are also 50 species of bees that thrive because
of East Point’s foliage and wildflowers.
Sadly, both the number of Monarchs and
bees are on the decline, due to loss of natural
habitat and over-development worldwide.
While Monarch butterflies help pollinate
plants, flowers and trees to help maintain a
healthy ecosystem, bees are responsible
for pollinating one-sixth of flowering
plants worldwide and approximately 400
different types of agricultural plants,
representing nearly three quarters of the
plants that produce 90 percent of the
world’s food.
East Point is also a migratory path for
many species of birds, where they live,
eat, nest and migrate. It is a stopping
point along the Eastern Seaboard, for the
spring and fall migrations. More than
170 birds have been documented at “East
Point Sanctuary,” including State-listed
birds that are endangered, threatened or
of special concern. These include the endangered
Short-eared Owl and American
Bittern, as well as the threatened Northern
Harrier, Northern Parula, Mourning
Warbler, and Blackpoll Warbler.
The Blackpoll Warbler is a fine
example of why the very existence of a
bird depends on the East Point habitat.
An adult weighs in at around 12 grams,
which is lighter than an empty soda can.
Before beginning its three day, non-stop
migration from Nahant, over the Atlantic,
to Columbia or Venezuela, it has to double
its weight. The food found in East
Point’s diverse habitat powers this little
bird to make its long, quick, amazing
journey.
Geology, Archaeology, Ecology, Melittology,
Ornithology, Botany and Culturology
all contribute to East Point’s interesting
evolutionary history. Be it rooted in
science or just the pure, heart-felt beauty
of the land and surrounding ocean, what
is indisputable is that East Point, Nahant
is a very special place.
The Keep Nahant Wild movement is a part
of The Nahant Preservation Trust, Inc.,
an all-volunteer, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3)
qualified-charitable organization, whose
mission, like that of the Keep Nahant Wild,
is to preserve our scenic landscapes, open
conservation lands.
Fall 2019 | xx
Twelve years ago Dave Morin probably thought he
would be spending the rest of his days working
as a computer engineer. Little did he know the
tiny island he had just moved to with his wife and two
children would ignite a passion that would inspire him to
pick up a camera and become the established photographer
he is today.
He recalls his first toe in the water with photography
came after he purchased his first 35mm camera from
a work colleague. “It was one of those old school film
cameras so you would have to wait until the pictures were
developed to see how good they came out”
Dave goes on to tell me “It was a shame as I was
becoming fairly proficient at using the camera when I
finally sold it”
A then burdening workload with further education
and the general day to day schedule of being a loving
husband and father found him struggling to find the
quality time he needed with his new found interest.
A few years passed but that new found passion that
had put on hold was to be reignited again with the dawn
of the digital camera. “I went out and purchased a brand
new Canon camera and was truly blown away by the quality
and the instant and editable images that it took”
Dave now owns multiple high quality digital cameras
that are far more advanced, along with several specialist
aerial cameras that he attaches to radio controlled ‘drone’
quad copters (Daves other passion) which gives him a
unique birds eye view of Nahant in all it’s majestic beauty.
“Nahant offers so many enigmatic areas
to photograph and with the changing
seasons, the landscape makes for some
very unique shots.”
Dave’s main focus lies very much in landscape photography,
his favorite muse by far is the rugged, wild and beautiful island
he calls home.
“Nahant offers so many enigmatic areas to photograph and
with the changing seasons, the landscape makes for some very
unique shots.”
Close to his heart are the picturesque beaches and wharf area
as well as the craggy wildness of ‘40 steps’. I ask Dave if he has
any advice for someone that might be thinking of picking up a
camera like he did all those years ago.
“My advice would be that you don’t need to pay out for expensive
or fancy equipment to take great pictures. In fact I know
several photographers that only use their cell phones and they’re
out there winning awards for their photos.
There are a wealth free courses available online for those
that want to learn and of course Youtube is an amazing resource
for both newbies and professional photographers alike. Enjoy
your surroundings, take as many pictures as possible and educate
yourself by your mistakes”
Dave’s amazing and unique photography both old and new
can be found on his Facebook social media page as well as davemorin.smugmug.com
Many of Dave’s photos have been published in books or used
for local historical purposes and community projects and he is
aiming to exhibit his work locally in the not to distant future. Be
sure to check out his work, Nahant magazine is a huge fan and
know you will be too.
The Nahant Historical Society was
formed in 1975 by a dedicated group
of Nahanters who keep Nahant in
their heart. The original mission was to ‘investigate,
record, and perpetuate the history
of the Town of Nahant, and to collect, hold
and preserve documents, books, memoirs, folios
and all other matters illustrating its history
for that of individuals identified with it.”
Our mission has been updated but still holds
to these values.
Our most important task is to ‘acquire,
preserve and interpret artifacts….for the enjoyment,
education and enrichment of the
public.’ We do this through outreach to our
local students and seniors, as well as through
enlightening lectures and events throughout
the year. Most recently we opened a new gallery
space on the second floor of the Community
Center to share a part of our incredible
collection of art.
For the 17 th year, we took part in the Essex
Heritage Trails & Sails event, which brings
folks out to see what’s new and exciting across
Essex County. We focused on what defines
a Townie, presenting a lecture and mounting
an exhibit of Townies new and old
along with their assessments of ‘what
defines a Townie’.
Our welcome mat is out here
at the Nahant Community Center
located at 41 Valley Road. Come
enjoy our new gallery space, our
current ‘Townie’ exhibit, and the
award-winning major exhibition in
the Lowell Room Gallery, Nahant on
the Rocks, which tells the legendary,
seldom-told history of Nahant and its
people. Also, mark your calendars
for our November 3 rd event on Women
in Service, here at the Community
Center.
Learn more about this unique
town by the sea by visiting the Hodges
Room Library and Archives, where
we feature short-term exhibits, files and publications
all pertaining to Nahant. Come savor
the richness that is Nahant.
Visit our museum shop, online at nahanthistory.org
or in person, and search for that
unusual Nahant-related gift. We carry the
perfect items for all occasions.
The Society also presents educational and
enriching programs and lectures throughout
the year. Check our website for postings of
upcoming events.
Everything’s Coming
Up Roses
By Deborah Vanderslice
Well, maybe not roses, judging from the
planters which adorn Nahant’s business
district across from Short Beach.
More like Petunias, Bacopa, Verbena, Dracena,
Succulents, Sweet Potato Vine and Geraniums.
The planters are part of the Club’s commitment to
beautification in Nahant, evidenced around town
in areas which include the traffic island in front of
the Nahant Life Saving Station, the lilac grove in
the Greenlawn Cemetary, and the round-about at
Nahant Road and Cliff Street.
The Nahant Garden Club, which boasts
106 members as it starts the 2019-2020 season,
was organized in 1927 and federated in
1957. This year marks its 93rd year of operation
and its commitment to education, beautification
and scholarship. There have been
39 presidents over the years, many serving
multiple terms.
Margaret Blank, who served as president
from 2016 – 2019 and for the new season
commencing in September, shares leadership
with Joanne Bryanos, says, “It is a privilege to
serve in a leadership role for this historic club,
which has evolved to be part of the fabric of
our little town. Membership has grown dramatically
over the past several years, which I
attribute to the club being visible in the community
through our activities such as holiday
house tours, garden tours, the annual plant
sale, beautification efforts, and the granting
of the annual Marie Ford Scholarship Award
to a Nahant senior who demonstrates an interest
in Ecology, Conservation and the Environment.
As we move forward in the 21st
century, I should add that having a presence
on Facebook – something not foreseen back in
1927 – helps spread the word.”
Members are drawn to the informative topics
addressed at monthly meetings. For example,
the 2019-2020 season kicks off in September
with guest speaker and Master Gardener
Rosemary Conway discussing how to prepare
one’s home perennial garden for winter.
October’s meeting will enlighten members on
how to create edible centerpieces, and November’s
meeting will focus on creating Thanksgiving
arrangements. Members also join in
on field trips to local gardens, the Boston
Flower Show, and the Museum of Fine Arts’
“Art in Bloom” show. Some meetings include
hands-on workshops in floral design, how to
build a decorative holiday Boxwood tree, and
wreath-making.
Wreath-making skills will come in handy
when the Club puts on its December 7 Holiday
House Tour, “Songs of the Season,”
open to the public, always a popular event in
town, and the Club’s biggest fundraiser whose
proceeds will be used to help fund its beautification,
scholarship and community programs,
including the Club-sponsored Junior
Gardener Program at the Johnson School.
Wreath-making skills also come in handy
when members make Memorial Day wreaths
that are placed at the five war memorials
a veteran tosses the wreath into the ocean.”
Whether for love of gardening, camaraderie with those who share
a common interest, or dedication to community, the Nahant Garden
Club is a thriving and welcoming organization. For membership information,
Molly Conlin, President of the Nahant American Legion Auxiliary
and Chairwoman of the Memorial Day Committee, shares, “I
saw my first Memorial Day parade in Nahant when we were new residents
in 1973. As a former Navy nurse, one of the most touching moments
for me was at the Town Wharf during the salute to those who
had perished at sea in service to their country. Part of the ceremony
then was a wreath being dropped from a private plane into the water
near the Wharf…to this day, the Garden Club provides a beautiful
Finding Dory
Celebrating Over a Century of Sailing
Founded in 1894, the Nahant Dory
Club includes members who span
from beginners in sailing to world-class
yachtsmen and local cruisers to trans-Atlantic
crossers.
Members of the Nahant Dory Club enjoy
the most collegial sailing on the north shore
- from recreational racing to cruising and
weekend events, families
enjoy the sport from both
land and sea. Nahant has
been the scene of some of
the earliest organized yacht
racing in North America.
The Town Class boat,
commonly called the “Townie” was the most
popular racing boat in the Club’s history,
and was raced here for over 70 years.
On July 19, 1845, the first formal yacht
race in the Boston area was held off the Nahant
shores and was an event open to yachts
between 10- and 50-tons. A 22-mile course
around the Graves and Egg Rock drew 11
contestants, with Benjamin Clark of Nahant
winning the race in his 12 -ton Schooner
“Raven”, beating several larger boats, on
Fall 2019 | 16
handicap, at roughly 45 ft. The “Annals of
Nahant” show that less successful contestants
questioned the handicapping, thus initiating
a lively tradition that continues to our day!
Nahant is noted in yachting annals
throughout the 19th century with exploits
such as the voyage in 1866 of the yacht
“Alice”, from Nahant to Cowes, England.
One of the first yachts to cross the Atlantic,
the 27-ton “Alice” was a seaworthy craft
modeled after the Boston pilot boats and
was owned by Nahant summer resident
Thomas Appleton, and sailed by Benjamin
Clark’s son, Arthur. Another member of
the summer colony, General Charles Paine,
owned three America’s Cup defenders, the
“Puritan” (1885), “Mayflower” (1886) and
“Volunteer” (1887).
As the focus of large-yacht racing moved
to Marblehead and Manchester in the latter
part of the century, small-boat racing in fishing
dories became more popular with both
year-round and summer residents of Nahant
which then led to the founding of the Dory
Club in 1894.
The Nahant racing dory had its own
unique evolution, different from the fleets
of dory
racers in
Swampscott
and
Marblehead.
The
Nahant
boats were longer (up to 23 feet in length),
heavier and more extreme in their hull
shape. Their racing crews could total 4
people and they could ship a second mast
making them schooner rigged rather than
sloops. They became far removed from
their simple wholesome fishing boat roots.
They were flat-bottomed center-boarders,
internally ballasted in heavy weather with
50-pound “pigs” of lead or iron. They were
generally sloop rigged with a large leg-of-
“What hasn’t changed at the NDC are the goals of promoting a love
of boats and the sea through congenial competition, and also the
desire to introduce this great pastime to the next generation who
will challenge the winds and waves off Nahant’s rocky shores.”
mutton main and a small jib, both unfurled
from an un-stayed, removable mast.
Racing at the NDC was curtailed during
the Spanish-American war of 1898, and was
not resumed until 1903. But attention had
returned to sailing by 1906, when the simple
clubhouse was built for $1500 on the town
wharf to provide storage for gear, and a
place to have tea. Regular races were held
on Saturday afternoons, July 4th, and Labor
Day, with special races on Wednesdays for
juniors under 16 and “females of any age”.
Town Class boat, commonly called the Townie, was the most
popular racing boat in the Club’s history. They were raced for
over 70 years.
Membership became progressively more
restricted to Nahant’s wealthy summer
residents during those years.
Year-round residents were only allowed
to participate in occasional “open” races
held by this exclusive, albeit spartan, club.
Nevertheless, the results record the successes
of “Townies” such as Joseph Gosselin, the
town barber, who was the able skipper of a
fast boat called “Close Shave”.
In 1911, a class of 22-foot gaff sloops, ini-
Sailing at the beginning of the new century/ circa 1905. In Nahant, a woman’s place did not have to be in the kitchen as this remarkable image of a Nahant
dory shows us. With imagination this sailor becomes an icon for the sweeping social flux of our modern world.
tially called Bug boats, was introduced in Nahant.
By 1922, these boats had evolved into
one of the larger U.S. fleets of the International
Star class, which remained the main
racing class at the NDC until World War II.
The Nahant Stars were the only fleet of this
class to carry spinnakers. Smaller cat-rigged
boats called Monty Cats, which were built by
Montgomery’s Boat Yard in Gloucester, were
introduced for junior racing in 1929. Monty
Cats are still sailed in Annisquam, where
they are called “Fish Boats”.
Nahant Dory Club members were active on
the national and international racing scenes
in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Frank Paine, son of
the General Paine mentioned earlier, was a
talented yacht designer and racer who drew
the lines of many successful boats, including
the famous racing-fishing schooner
“Gertrude L. Thebaud”. Paine also won
the Manhasset Bay Challenge Cup for the
Club in his R-class boat “Gypsy” in 1928 and
designed the J-boat “Yankee” that introduced
several innovations such as the parachute
spinnaker into the America’s Cup trails of
1930, 1934 and 1937.
Women were active in the club’s sailing
and social functions, and “mixed doubles”
races were held in the Star Class, in the
1920’s. Husband-wife teams such as the
Curtis’s and the Kings took things seriously
enough to ship their Stars to Havana for the
mid-winter Bacardi Cup races, a famous
event of that time. The families most active
in NDC racing throughout those years, and
who are still residents of Nahant, include the
Motleys, the Sigourneys, the Hodges, and
the Warrens.
These halcyon days of the Dory Club’s history
were brought to an end by the combined
effects of social change, the devastating 1938
hurricane, and mainly, WWII. The remains
of the once 20-boat Star fleet were sold in
1941 to Lake Sunapee (where some are still
racing today), since recreational boating was
forbidden in the Boston area waters during
the war.
The Town class was first introduced at the
NDC in 1939, as a less expensive alternative
for those reluctant to replace Stars destroyed
in the 1938 storm. This 16-ft dory-type
sloop has remained the mainstay of NDC
one-design racing from the early part of our
current century to the present day. The 15-ft
Mercury-class sloops were also popular in
the late 1960’s, and the 13-ft Laser class offered
spirited competition in the late 1970’s
and early 1980’s, for those inclined to the
thrills and spills of planing hulls.
The club has always worked to foster
junior sailing and racing in Nahant. The
Turnabouts, 10 ft. sloops of plywood construction,
were popular junior boats in the
1960’s. The program was revived and formalized
in the early 1980’s, and six “Super
Skunk” boats were purchased by the Town of
Nahant. An associated week-night adult instruction
program, and particularly, a ladies
solo racing program, also continue to prove
popular. Over the century since its founding,
the NDC has moved full circle from an informal
club, through a period as one of the
most exclusive sailing clubs in America, and
then after WWII back to its original intent
simply as a meeting place of amateur sailors
of all stripes. What hasn’t changed are the
goals of promoting a love of boats and the
sea through congenial competition, and also
the desire to introduce this great pastime to
the next generation who will challenge the
winds and waves off Nahant’s rocky shores.
This brief summary owes much to previous
discussions of NDC history written by Arthur
Fay, Dan Perepelitza, and Herb Motley, Jr. Those
interested in looking further into the subject will
find much original material of interest in the
archives of the Nahant Historical Society. FMI on
For the past twenty-two years Nahant fire fighters have been
carrying on the long tradition of providing ocean rescue service in
the waters surrounding Nahant. In the prior three years we have
responded to over thirty ocean rescue calls and have assisted in
the successful rescue of twenty-six individuals.
In late July 2019 the Nahant Fire Department’s only rescue boat
had a critical structural failure and the department’s ocean rescue
response is left without a suitable vessel that can be launched from
a beach year-round.
The Nahant Fire Fighters Association Local 2718 has decided to
fundraise for a new Ocean Rescue boat for the department. The
cost of a new suitable boat, properly equipped, is $40,000. Please
be on the lookout for our fundraising efforts on our Facebook page
and elsewhere and consider a donation to keep this critical service
to Nahant for years to come.
