Entering this season, the Unionville-Sebewaing Area boys’ basketball team had all
the ingredients for a successful season. Perhaps its most important piece is the man in the
middle -- 6-foot-6 senior center Isaiah Williamson.
Over halfway through the season, the Patriots are on a tear,
with a perfect 13-0 record and No. 6 ranking in Class C, as of
February 13th. Williamson is leading the way. A second-team All
Thumb selection a year ago, after averaging 9.3 points and 5.5
rebounds per game for a team that won a district championship,
Isaiah has upped his game as a senior and is leading USA in scoring
and rebounding, averaging 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
In early February, the Patriots notched big non-league wins over
talented teams Sanford Meridian and Saginaw Valley Lutheran.
USA has also downed its top rival, Reese, twice.
Williamson is also a pitcher for the Patriots’ baseball team,
and helped them to a Division 4 state semifinal berth in 2017. Isaiah
enjoys hanging out with friends. He is undecided on his aca-
Isaiah Williamson
demic future. He would like to play basketball in college while studying pharmacy.
While Emily Schaub’s college career will consist of leaping over hurdles, she is
making sure local folks also remember her work on the hardwood. The 5-foot-9 senior is
helping the Marlette girls’ basketball team to an outstanding season by averaging teambests
of 19 points and nine rebounds per game.
As of Feb. 13, the Red Raiders, fueled by the inside-outside game
of Schaub, have a 13-3 record, which includes their first win over
Greater Thumb East rival, Sandusky, in nearly four years.
Of course, Emily is no stranger to athletic success. A secondteam
All Thumb basketball selection as a sophomore and junior,
it’s spring time when she really shines. Schaub exploded onto the
scene as a freshman by placing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles at
the Division 3 Michigan Track and Field State Championship. She
has placed third in the event at the last two state championships,
attracting interest from Division 1 Oakland University, which
is where Schaub will continue her track and field career. In her
free time, Emily enjoys hunting and spending time with family.
