Mission Statement<br />
<strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> <strong>Thumb</strong> Area (“VMTA”) is dedicated to the recognition and advancement <strong>of</strong> high<br />
school athletics in Michigan’s <strong>Thumb</strong> region. VMTA, created in 2014, is a monthly sports magazine,<br />
which displays achievements <strong>of</strong> local high school athletes, primarily through high quality photography.<br />
At the heart <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> mission is the support <strong>of</strong> local students, and our high school athletic<br />
departments, in an effort to preserve physical health, competition through sport, and the development <strong>of</strong><br />
strong, well-rounded future leaders. Our various pr<strong>of</strong>essional photographers attend games and/or events<br />
in each <strong>of</strong> the 17 communities that we cover, each month. We then display these photographs <strong>of</strong> as many<br />
athletes as possible, through our monthly publication, website and facebook page. VTMA highlights a<br />
male and female standout athlete each month on our “Players <strong>of</strong> the Month” page. We are joined in this<br />
awesome mission by a wealth <strong>of</strong> local businesses who support our youth by advertising in our publication,<br />
on the page/s <strong>of</strong> their selected locality. The magazine would not be possible without these great<br />
supporters and ask that you keep our advertising customers in mind for your local business needs. We<br />
display the advertisements in the magazine, on our website and on our facebook page to provide them<br />
with maximum exposure. We also award a customer each month with our “Advertiser <strong>of</strong> the Month,”<br />
providing local business owners with an opportunity to reflect on the impact <strong>of</strong> high school athletics in<br />

Players Of The Month<br />
<strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> <strong>Thumb</strong> is proud to announce our new sponsor for the Players<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Month, VG’s Grocery <strong>of</strong> Caro. Now, not only will the players <strong>of</strong><br />
the month be featured in the magazine and recieve a stunning Player <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Entering this season, the Unionville-Sebewaing Area boys’ basketball team had all<br />
the ingredients for a successful season. Perhaps its most important piece is the man in the<br />
middle -- 6-foot-6 senior center Isaiah Williamson.<br />
Over halfway through the season, the Patriots are on a tear,<br />
with a perfect 13-0 record and No. 6 ranking in Class C, as <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>February</strong> 13th. Williamson is leading the way. A second-team All<br />
<strong>Thumb</strong> selection a year ago, after averaging 9.3 points and 5.5<br />
rebounds per game for a team that won a district championship,<br />
Isaiah has upped his game as a senior and is leading USA in scoring<br />
and rebounding, averaging 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.<br />
In early <strong>February</strong>, the Patriots notched big non-league wins over<br />
talented teams Sanford Meridian and Saginaw Valley Lutheran.<br />
USA has also downed its top rival, Reese, twice.<br />
Williamson is also a pitcher for the Patriots’ baseball team,<br />
and helped them to a Division 4 state semifinal berth in 2017. Isaiah<br />
enjoys hanging out with friends. He is undecided on his aca-<br />

demic future. He would like to play basketball in college while studying pharmacy.<br />
While Emily Schaub’s college career will consist <strong>of</strong> leaping over hurdles, she is<br />
making sure local folks also remember her work on the hardwood. The 5-foot-9 senior is<br />
helping the Marlette girls’ basketball team to an outstanding season by averaging teambests<br />
<strong>of</strong> 19 points and nine rebounds per game.<br />
As <strong>of</strong> Feb. 13, the Red Raiders, fueled by the inside-outside game<br />
<strong>of</strong> Schaub, have a 13-3 record, which includes their first win over<br />
Greater <strong>Thumb</strong> East rival, Sandusky, in nearly four years.<br />
Of course, Emily is no stranger to athletic success. A secondteam<br />
All <strong>Thumb</strong> basketball selection as a sophomore and junior,<br />
it’s spring time when she really shines. Schaub exploded onto the<br />
scene as a freshman by placing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles at<br />
the Division 3 Michigan Track and Field State Championship. She<br />
has placed third in the event at the last two state championships,<br />
attracting interest from Division 1 Oakland University, which<br />
is where Schaub will continue her track and field career. In her<br />
free time, Emily enjoys hunting and spending time with family.<br />
