Mission Statement<br />
<strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> <strong>Thumb</strong> Area (“VMTA”) is dedicated to the recognition and advancement <strong>of</strong> high<br />
school athletics in Michigan’s <strong>Thumb</strong> region. VMTA, created in 2014, is a monthly sports magazine,<br />
which displays achievements <strong>of</strong> local high school athletes, primarily through high quality photography.<br />
At the heart <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> mission is the support <strong>of</strong> local students, and our high school athletic<br />
departments, in an effort to preserve physical health, competition through sport, and the development <strong>of</strong><br />
strong, well-rounded future leaders. Our various pr<strong>of</strong>essional photographers attend games and/or events<br />
in each <strong>of</strong> the 17 communities that we cover, each month. We then display these photographs <strong>of</strong> as many<br />
athletes as possible, through our monthly publication, website and facebook page. VTMA highlights a<br />
male and female standout athlete each month on our “Players <strong>of</strong> the Month” page. We are joined in this<br />
awesome mission by a wealth <strong>of</strong> local businesses who support our youth by advertising in our publication,<br />
on the page/s <strong>of</strong> their selected locality. The magazine would not be possible without these great<br />
supporters and ask that you keep our advertising customers in mind for your local business needs. We<br />
display the advertisements in the magazine, on our website and on our facebook page to provide them<br />
with maximum exposure. We also award a customer each month with our “Advertiser <strong>of</strong> the Month,”<br />
providing local business owners with an opportunity to reflect on the impact <strong>of</strong> high school athletics in<br />

Players Of The Month<br />
There are a lot <strong>of</strong> familiar names on scorecards for the Caro girls’ bowling<br />
team this year. But perhaps none stand out like that <strong>of</strong> senior Corinne<br />
Schmaltz.<br />
The reason for the familiarity is that almost everyone is back from last year’s<br />
team, which was one <strong>of</strong> the best in the state. In 2017, Caro girls’<br />
bowling advanced all the way to the Division 3 state semifinals.<br />
Schmaltz not only enjoyed team success during her junior year,<br />
but in the separate individual state tournament, she made it to<br />
the quarterfinals before bowing out.<br />
In her most recent effort before this issue went to print,<br />
Schmaltz was high-scorer for the Tigers in a 29-1 over TVC East<br />
rival North Branch with games <strong>of</strong> 211 and 210.<br />
With an all-stater like Schmaltz leading the way, and plenty<br />
<strong>of</strong> experience back, look for the Tigers to contend again for a<br />
state championship in <strong>2018</strong>.<br />
Corinne Schmaltz<br />
Jackson Schenk entered the 2017-18 high school wrestling season with sky-high<br />
expectations. And so far, the dominating Mayville heavyweight has done nothing<br />
to diminish those hopes. The senior is <strong>of</strong>f to a 17-2 start this season, and is ranked<br />
No. 1 in the state in Division 4 at 285 pounds. In order to improve on last season<br />
though, Schenk will have to win districts, win regionals,<br />
then make it to the championship round <strong>of</strong> the state tournament.<br />
He placed third in the state (at 285 pounds) last year,<br />
so only a state championship or runner-up finish will better<br />
Schenk’s 2017 showing.<br />
Schenk puts his heart and soul on the wrestling mat, just<br />
like he does on the football field in the fall, and on the<br />
baseball diamond in the spring. Never one to shy away from<br />
showing his emotion on the field <strong>of</strong> play, Shenk has been a<br />
dominate two-way lineman for the Wildcats football team<br />
the past four years, as well as a top-notch baseball player.<br />
But it’s on the wrestling mat that the senior has stood tall.<br />
Jackson Schenk Led by Schenk, Mayville wrestling has won district championships<br />
the past two years. And Schenk has made it to the<br />
individual state finals as a junior and sophomore, culminating with last year’s<br />
third-place effort.<br />
