44 | November 7, 2019 | the orland Park Prairie sports <strong>OP</strong>Prairiedaily.com AREA SPORTS ROUNDUP 4 Sandburg’s volleyball team claims 16th straight regional title JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor Sandburg’s state power girls volleyball team took care of business, winning its 16th straight regional title with a 25-14, 25-19 victory over Lincoln-Way Central in the championship match in the Class 4A Thornwood Regional on Thursday, Oct. 31. The 32-5 Eagles, seeded first in their own sectional, were aiming for their first sectional title since 2004. They were scheduled to face Lockport on Monday, Nov. 4 and if they advanced, they would have been battling either Andrew or Homewood- Flossmoor for the title on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The Illinois High School Association supersectionals are slated for Friday, Nov. 8, and if Sandburg is still alive, the Eagles would play either Marist, Mother McAuley, Oak Park or Argo at 7 p.m. at Blue Island Eisenhower. The Eagles opened postseason play with a 25-18, 25-12 win over Thornwood on Oct. 29. Hailey Farrell had 14 assists, Rachel Krasowski had 11 digs and Sidona Rao had eight kills. The DePaul-bound Krasowski was also named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All- Region 6 Team. Krasowski and Shelby Stefanon were named to the SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue all-conference team. Maddie Giglio, shown diving in a meet earlier this year, is a SouthWest Suburban Conference champion and committed to the University of Toledo. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA Providence wins regional Orland Hills’ Juliana Warfield had nine kills and five aces as Providence Catholic won its fifth straight Class 3A volleyball regional with a 25- 9, 25-11 win over Tinley Park on Thursday, Oct. 31 in New Lenox. The Celtics (22-16) were scheduled to play Marian Catholic (25-10) at the Joliet Catholic Sectional on Monday, Nov. 4. Orland Park’s Tori Quinlan and Katianne Soltys are also on the Celtics’ roster. Sandburg swimmers fourth Maddie Giglio set a personal record in diving, racking up 429.6 points to take first in the SouthWest Suburban Conference girls swimming and diving meet, which concluded on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Lincoln-Way Central. Giglio earlier in the week announced her intention of attending the University of Toledo for diving and academics. Sandburg finished fourth in the conference meet with 179 points behind champion Lincoln-Way East (289), Lincoln-Way Central (212) and Lincoln- Way West (209). Jenna Falsey took third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 33.36 seconds and was fifth in the 200 IM. She also joined Julia Barry, Maureen Flannery and Colleen Donnell to take fifth in the 200-yard medley relay and joined Erin Barry, Therese Jaeger and Maggie Caliendo to take fourth in the 400 free relay. The 200 free relay team Flannery, Erin Barry, Julia Barry and Donnell took third. Julia Barry claimed fourth in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 100 back and Flannery took fifth in the 50 free. Thanksgiving For Stevie will take place from 3 p.m.-to-7 p.m. Nov. 29 at Cork & Kerry, 10614 Western Ave. in Chicago. The cost is $40 for adults which includes food and alcohol and $10 for children which includes food and soft drinks. There will be a designated driver shuttle from Mokena. The foundation is named for Steven Bajenski, a former Illinois Sparks player who died in 2009 after living life with a series of serious health ailments, including having open-heart surgery performed on him when he was just 10 weeks old. The foundation provides scholarships for high school baseball players and donates money to many other causes.

Hungry to have a big game, Porto and quarterback Kevin Conway have been putting in some extra time together at practice to make sure they are on the same page. “Me and Kevin worked hard all week to get that connection going,” Porto said. “And we had a game.” Porto had five catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns to lead the visiting Celtics to a 19- 14 win over Normal in a Class 6A first-round playoff game Saturday, Nov. 2. Providence (7-3) moved on to host 2018 state runner-up Crete-Monee (10- 0) in the second round at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9. “Lucas was due for a breakout game,” Providence coach Mark Coglianese said. “I know the talent that he has. It’s just a matter of getting the quarterback some time and taking some shots with him. We don’t throw deep very often, but when we do, I have all the confidence in the world in Lucas.” Conway finished 9-of- 15 passing for 160 yards and the two touchdowns to Porto. He also ran 13 times for 54 yards, including the go-ahead 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Conway hit Porto for a 32-yard score with 1:07 left in the first half to tie the game 7-7. “[Porto] did great,” Conway said. “We’ve been running sluggo [routes] and double moves in practice and we’ve just been timing up everything. “We started slow and we have to fix that in the second round, come out fast right away. But once we got going, things worked out. At the end of the day, we scored more points than they did and that’s all that matters.” The duo hooked up again on the first play of the fourth quarter, Conway finding Porto for a 34- yard touchdown to put the Celtics up 13-7. Anthony Prucha, Providence, senior linebacker --- Two sacks “I’ve been waiting a while for this,” Porto said. “It was a long time coming.” West (7-3) took advantage of a short field after a Providence fumble on a punt return as Carson Camp hit LaTre Billups for a 37-yard TD pass. The extra point gave West a 14- 13 lead with 10:47 to go. Conway, though, provided some of the biggest plays of the game with his feet. First, he ran for an 11-yard touchdown to put Providence back in front 19-14 with 7:27 to go. After forcing a punt, the Celtics got the ball back with 4:20 left and were able to run out the clock as Conway picked up two huge first downs, running for 19 yards on thirdand-17 and seven yards on third-and-7. “[On the third-and-17], we were ideally trying to throw it,” Conway said. “We were trying to set up the wheel route, but I saw a huge opening and I was like, I’ve just got to use my feet here. I did and got the first down.” Aaron Vaughn ran for 148 yards on 19 carries for the Celtics. Meanwhile, the Providence defense stepped up in a big way. With a secondary decimated by injuries, the Celtics kept Camp relatively in check.
