Taking a look at business news for Homer Glen
Thomas Czaja
tom@homerhorizon.com
It is safe to say that, for
the most part, any new
business is good for
the community.
Typically, the new business
will attract people to
town and have a positive
economic impact. That
said, it is good to get a
variety to businesses,
wanting to have a number
of services, restaurants and
what have you nearby to
partake in.
Obviously, some businesses
are bigger than
others, and some are
capable of offering more
or establishing a firmer
footprint in the community.
It can definitely be hard, at
times, to know what will
make it and what will not,
and those who run these
businesses do their best in
trying to figure that out.
In this issue of the newspaper,
we highlight some
significant business happenings
in the community.
The first is in regard to the
Megaplex on Bell Road,
which I am sure many of
you have been to before,
whether for exercise, a
child’s practice or what
have you.
The changes and renovations
being undertaken
at the Megaplex under
Branko Boricich and Sam
Zagorac will include Cork
& Kerry bar and grill, as
well as a smoothie bar,
being added inside, not
to mention new courts,
adult leagues, office space,
an apparel shop, batting
cages, flooring, lighting
and more.
You can read the full details
of what is being done
on Page 3 of this issue.
Again, when some new
businesses come in, it is
typically one or two things
or services they have. With
the Megaplex — fitting
with its name — it is
larger, and the impact will
be larger, too. It is more
space for athletics and
amenities in Homer Glen
being funded by these
partners looking to make it
a community space.
The other new business
story in this issue is about
Tavern in the Glen, which
is featured as this week’s
Dish spot on Page 19 of
this issue. I know there has
been a lot of buzz about
this and other bars/restaurants
like Cork & Kerry
coming to town, because
people naturally like having
more dining options
and the like.
The trio of owners for
that business — Jeff Wood,
Kevin Connolly and Greg
Stefanon — are all in their
first bar/restaurant venture
together, making their
dream happen. They took
a space that had previously
housed a couple other
businesses, put their stamp
on it, redid the interior
extensively (including
adding a church pew!) and
hope for it to be another
community gathering spot
for years to come.
As with any new establishment,
it is now up to
the community to check
each of these places out
and see what they think as
the business landscape in
town continues to evolve.
Letters to the Editor
To all residents of Homer
Glen
Here comes another
road project that is completely
useless. After the
159th Street renovation is
done and the 143rd Street
renovation begins (another
2-3 year project) Homer
Glen Mayor George Yukich
wants to widen 151st
street from Cedar Road to
Bell road.
This coming with commercial
and residential
growth that is stagnant at
best. As of this writing,
there are zero projects
in the works that border
159th Street to the south,
151st Street to the north,
Cedar Road to the west
and Bell Road to the east.
There is “talk” of a sports
complex to go in on this
surrounding area, but as of
now, not one set plan.
Also, this project will
cost taxpayers, but more
on that at a later date. The
Village Board says they
have to widen 151st Street
because of increased traffic
due to the widening of
159th Street and the relocation
of the Village Hall.
I have a couple of questions.
1.) Has a traffic
study been done? 2.) Why
widen 159th Street if motorists
will not go back to
said roadway? 3.) Does the
Village Hall attract more
people than the golf course
did? My home borders
151st Street and the new
Heritage Park. Since the
new lane configurations
went in on 159th, I have
noticed a decrease in traffic
along 151st Street.
This is a reminder to
the residents along 151st
Street that the road is going
to come closer to your
homes. That means increased
safety risks, noise
and the elimination of
privacy. It is time for the
residents of 151st Street
to show up at the Village
Board meetings and speak
out on a waste of federal
and local taxes being
spent.
Keep the four-lane roadways
to the commercial areas
and 151st to residential
traffic and not a thruway
for non-residents.
