Interswitch moves into e-health with eChat acquisition
By Prince Osuagwu, Hi-Tech Editor
Digital payment company,
Interswitch Limited, has acquired
a health-based technology
company, eClat Healthcare
Limited to improve healthcare
delivery in Africa. The deal which
was sealed last weekend saw
Interswitch acquiring a 60 percent
stake in the Nigerian health tech
company, through the purchase of
shares from current shareholders
and subscription to new shares
issued by the company.
Founded in 2012, eClat
Healthcare Limited specializes in
assisting healthcare service
providers in planning, designing
and operating their unique
practices through the deployment
of its bespoke healthcare
technology platform, designed
specifically for the healthcare
environment in Africa.
eClat’s healthcare technology
platform, consists of a core e-Clinic
software, including electronic
billing, immunization, ante-natal
and care pathway functions, as well
as a variety of additional specialist
modules. Prior to the acquisition,
eClat’s platform had become a
leading Electronic Health Record,
EHR platform used in over 250
public and private healthcare
facilities in Nigeria.
Group Managing Director/Chief
Executive Officer of Interswitch, Mr
Mitchell Elegbe, said that Nigeria’s
healthcare system currently lacks
adequate funding and a national
framework, leading to operational
inefficiencies.
He promised that Interswitch’s
strategic investment in healthcare
technology aims to address these
challenges by modernising the
healthcare sector in Nigeria and
eventually in Africa through its
innovative products and services.
The combined product offerings
of Interswitch and eClat are
expected to, amongst other things,
enable operators in the healthcare
sector develop new capabilities,
improve the efficiency of their core
operations and facilitate seamless
payments.
According to him, “due to the
growing adoption of Interswitch’s
healthcare product offerings by the
operators, Interswitch’s healthcare
technology platform aims to be one
of the top industry platforms in
Nigeria, which can be utilised as a
major data source by healthcare
policy makers for planning and
efficiency improvements in the
sector. As a result of this
acquisition, the combined
healthcare technology solutions
are expected to position the
Interswitch group as a health-tech
solution and payments provider of
choice to the healthcare industry
going forward”
In recent years, Africa’s mobile
network infrastructure has been
rapidly improved, and
smartphones have been further
popularised. The number of mobile
Internet users in Africa is growing
rapidly, The General System for Mobile
communications Association, GSMA in
July, said that in the next few years,
sub-Saharan Africa will be the region
with fastest growing number of mobile
users in the world.
It predicted that by 2025, the total
number of mobile users in the region
will increase to more than 600 million,
which is about half of the total
population on the African Continent.
By then, the number of users accessing
the Internet via smartphones will be
doubled. Under the stimulation of the
demographic dividend, Africa has
ushered in a crucial time for digital
transformation and digital economy
development. The substantial increase
of users has a profound impact on the
development model of mobile Internet
technology in Africa. Nowadays, from
mobile payment to instant messaging,
from music streaming media to short
video social networking, from online
games to online reading, Africa is
experiencing an upsurge in the
development of the mobile Internet.
However, despite the huge potential
for progress, experts say the
continent's mobile internet
connectivity needs boosting, and, that
requires enormous investment and
significant regulatory reforms
Today, more than 1.2 million
Why Africa’s Mobile Internet should
seek new opportunities
•GSMA says region may have world’s highest mobile users
•How Tecno thinks smartphone makers can help
kilometers of Internet cables run
across the oceans' floors, yet, not more
than 22 percent of the continent has
access.
Experts have suggested that in the
new world order, the practical solution
is to look for new opportunities. In
Africa's case, the China-African
collaboration appears the solution.
The China-African innovation team is
constantly bringing forth new ideas in
the localisation of mobile Internet
products, operations, and strategies in
Africa, with the aim of deepening
Interconnection and cooperation to
jointly build an informationist, Africa.
To key on this and become a part of
the history, mobile phone makers,
Tecno said it decided to invest in
sponsorship of the First China-Africa
Mobile Internet Economy Summit
which held in Nairobi Kenya, last
week. The summit was co-sponsored
by China-Africa Fund for Industrial
Cooperation, CAFIC, GSMA Mobile
360 Series, and Tecno, global. It
brought together more than 200
representatives from top organizations
and enterprises in the fields of
technology, mobile communications,
Internet, venture capital, and
entrepreneurship incubation, including
Netease, Tencent, Jumia, Google,
Facebook, Safaricom, MTN, Goldman
Sachs, United Bank for Africa, among
others. At the summit, Tecno said it
shared its experiences and substantial
achievements in the African mobile
Internet ecosystem. With its in-depth
involvement in the African market for
many years, General Manager of
Tecno, Stephen Ha said: “With the
digitalisation and modernisation of
Africa, we will keep providing users
with smart, smooth, simple smartphone
devices and mobile internet services.
As a forerunner of mobile Internet in
Africa, with our own successful
experiences and vast smart phone
For him, the company developed a
customized intelligent terminal
