Half a dozen thrilling reads for September
‘It was a good day to be free of prison.’ So begins David Baldacci’s One Good Deed
... his latest release which, as always, keeps readers’ adrenalin running high. When
Aloysius Archer gets out of prison, he heads for Poca City, with just the clothes he’s
wearing and an appointment with his parole officer. A chance meeting sees him
offered a job as a debt collector - but all’s not above board, and if Aloysius wants to
avoid heading back behind bars, he’s got his work cut out for him. Macmillan, R299.
• A new home in the suburbs offers a fresh start to a family of four. It’s in a quiet,
leafy road, with good schools, and is close to the sea and a comfortable commute
to London. Perfect. All bar the fact that it appears to be the hunting ground for
a serial killer. Fiona Cummins’ The Neighbour is as thrilling as it gets. Macmillan,
R290 • Blood in the Water by Jack Flynn is set in Boston’s underworld, where the
harbour chief, his 19-year-old daughter and a homeland security agent are caught
up in a deadly game of cat and mouse with international terrorists. Macmillan, R299
Tom Kennedy and his young son, Jake,
have just moved to a quiet village,
hoping to heal the hurt after the loss
of their wife and mum. The place they
choose to live, Featherbank, has a dark
past ... 15 years before, a serial killer,
known as The Whisper Man, abducted
and murdered five young boys.
The killer was caught, and this history
doesn’t worry Tom and Jake. Until another
boy goes missing. And Jake says
he hears whispering at his window.
Described as gripping, moving and
brilliantly creepy ... an outstanding new
psychological thriller. Penguin, R290
In a large house in London’s fashionable
Chelsea, a baby is awake in her cot.
Well-fed and cared for, she’s happily
waiting for someone to pick her up.
In the kitchen lie three decomposing
corpses, with a hastily scrawled note.
The three have been dead for several
days. So who’s looking after the baby?
There’s little better than finding a new
Lisa Jewell book on the shelves ... The
Family Upstairs is just FABULOUS.
Penguin, R290
Also look out for ...
Daisy and Simon’s marriage is great,
particularly after the arrival of longedfor
daughter Millie. A happy little family
of three. So what if Simon drinks a bit
too much every now and then ... as
Daisy says, he’s just letting off steam.
Then one night at a party, things spiral
horribly out of control ... Adele Parks’
Lies Lies Lies is all about relationships,
marriage and secrets. A great read.
After being diagnosed with lymphoma, Lizanne Joubert,
came out standing strong and moving forward at a fast
pace. This superwoman shares her story.
Lizanne in short:
I unwind by … just relaxing at home,
inviting friends over for a braai or
catching the latest series on television.
I enjoy … a good cup of coffee, biltong
and food (just as long as I don’t
have to cook it)
I love animals … especially my Boston
Terrier, Katy.
er energy is palpable
as she describes her
journey with cancer. “A
few years ago, at the
age of 23, I quickly
started losing weight.
I also seemed to be out of breath doing
simple things such as walking a
few stairs. Thinking I was merely unfit,
I ignored it at first. After googling my
symptoms I decided to go to my doctor.
He sent me for a sonar and picked
up lymphoma and wanted to book me
into hospital. Talk about bad timing
to discover something like this. It was
the day before a long weekend and I
had plans. Long story short that night
we were involved in a car accident
and I was admitted to hospital. I went
for another scan when the radiologist
confirmed I had a tumour in my heart.
I wasn’t too shocked but wanted to
get the process rolling as it was
an inconvenience.
“A few weeks after my diagnosis I
started with chemotherapy. My life
did not stop because of cancer, I still
got married to my soul mate, Werner.
He was my first ‘real’ love, and
together we journeyed down the road
of recovery.
“A few months later I was readmitted
to hospital and had to start with
in-hospital chemotherapy. After
chemo, a stemcell transplant followed
and then another month of radiation.
Once the medical procedures were
completed, I continued with my life,
but the cancer returned after a year
and a half. It was challenging to accept
I had to drink from the same cup
again. I had to start with chemo and
radiation again. Apart from this, I had
outstanding medical bills needing to
be paid. Employees at my workplace
at the time each contributed a portion
of their salary to help me. I also had
great help from our wonderful community.
I am celebrating my third year
in remission. What a blessing!”
Despite these challenges, Lizanne is
moving forward with her head held
high. Life after breast cancer has
brought some changes. “After qualifying
to be a nail technician, I decided
to leave my job and pursue a career in
beauty. I opened my own nail studio,
LJPND Boutique Nails. To date, she has
inspired many others with her fantastic
work and by looking at her Instagram
she certainly has many followers.
Cancer in some ways has allowed me
to review my goals and follow my
dreams. I am positive and look forward
to the future.
These days I spend my time wisely, doing
what I do best, staying humbly on
my knees and fighting back.
Did you know:
September is Lymphoma
Awareness Month. Lymphoma is
one of the most prevalent forms
of blood cancer, which itself
represents the fifth most common
cause of cancer death worldwide.
Each year, it is estimated that
more than 400,000 people are
diagnosed with lymphoma, yet
this complex group of diseases has
a relatively limited understanding
among the general public.
Yahto, which means blue in Native
American, is a music theatre singer, who
completed his degree in music theatre
last year at the young age of 18, from
Stageworx School of Performing Arts. He
sings, dances and creates and makes his
own outfits for his performances. He has
an incredible voice and as he says, has
been singing before he could talk.
On The Voice SA Yahto got three “turns”,
one from Lira, Francois and Ricky and
from there decided to go with Team
Leera. “It was the most incredible
experience, I would not have given it
up for anything, and I learned so much
about myself. The show really showed
me how hard working one needs to
be in this industry. You have to keep
your mind on the goal.” Yahto adds. He
also learned to cut out the haters and
the naysayers, as he is flamboyant and
knows what he does, doesn’t always
cater to everyone’s taste. Not just in the
choices of his songs,
but also in his outfits.
He performed most of
his songs in high heel
shoes and glitzy outfits
that he put together
himself, sometimes
wearing a skirt over a
suit. The garments were
sponsored by Truworths
and YDE and Yatho put
his own spin on every
outfit. “They were very
open-minded about my
look,” Yahto adds. There
were many negative
YouTube and Facebook
comments, but Yahto has learned from
an early age to focus on the positive.
“You have to keep your eye on the prize
and you have to keep going, no matter
what,” Yahto says.
The Voice made it possible for Yahto to
explore and grow himself as an artist.
He chose a wide range of songs to sing,
from movie themes, rock ballads, dirty
grunge, Broadway ballads and more.
“The Voice made it possible to bring out
the true artist inside myself,” Yahto adds.
Yahto teaches music theatre at
Stageworx, and in his free time he writes
his own songs, rehearses with his band
and runs his own dance group. He
also has his own clothing brand called
House of Kraft. Music is Yahto’s passion,
Life will always
be difficult, the
world can be a
dark place, but
be a light in
the darkness
through and through, “I sing to heal my
own wounds, but I also sing for the little
girls and boys out there who haven’t
yet decided if this is what they would
like to do. When I go through difficult
times I write songs to remind myself
that I will be okay again.” He believes
in embracing the person who you are,
even when others do not and he is
comfortable and proud of the person
he is today. His energy and enthusiasm
for life and music shines from out of his
eyes. In 2007 Yahto sadly lost his father
and he recalls what his father told him at
the age of four, “He told me that life will
always be difficult, the world can be a
dark place, but be a light in the darkness.
Shine your light brazenly for others
to see.”
Yahto is an open book, and has endured
much bullying over his weight and
about being openly gay at school
from the stage of primary school.
Today he believes you
should be yourself
unapologetically and
a person should never
wear a mask, and
Yahto certainly does
not. “We often think
people care more
than they do, and we
think people will not
accept us for who we
are, and it is true there
are some, but at the
end of the day the
people that do accept
you are the ones who
matter.” He wants
to make a difference in the lives of
others, and he wants to do this by
being who he truly is, unashamedly. “I
want to take on every challenge that
comes my way and grab onto every
opportunity, not only in the music
industry, but in life, to further my
career and be true to what
I represent.”
Yahto will be performing his own
personally written and produced
songs at Born To Perform and will also
be part of several other performances.
Born To Perform was founded in 2015
as a platform to give young performers
opportunities and experiences in the
arts, whilst allowing self-development
and personal growth through the love
and passion for music.
Pot
Plants
Direct,
R70.50
Bulbs: Feed bulbs a high potash fertilizer for maximum flowers and continue to water
until the leaves turn yellow.
Roses: Feed roses with 3:1:5 or 8:1:5, water regularly and replenish mulch (ever wondered
what all those fertiliser numbers mean? Visit us at Pot Plants Direct for a better understanding
of the different fertiliser applications).
Phalaenopsis orchids: Keep in very bright light, but keep them out of direct sun. The
ideal temperature is between 15 and 22°C. Water the orchid’s roots infrequently. Fertilize
every 1-2 weeks, but not during the flowering phase.
Pot Plants: Re-pot container plants into a larger pot if necessary and feed a high nitrogen
fertilizer solution.
Look out for leaf gull on Azaleas, rust on Geraniums, blight on Tomatoes, aphids on rose
buds, slugs and snails around new planted seedlings, thrips on Ficus and Gladioli and
Citrus psylla on lemons
Two tree options are:
1. Sclerocarya birrea (Marula Tree), which is an iconic African symbol and is found in the
warmer parts of southern Africa. Marula is a medium-sized to large deciduous tree with
an erect trunk and rounded crown.
2. Philenoptera violacea (Apple-leaf), which is a medium- to large-sized, deciduous to
semi-deciduous tree up to 15 m tall with a wide-spreading, dense and rounded crown.
Reshaping
the future
Geraldine Naidoo put St Martins on the map through
her involvement in piloting a science programme for
Honeywell in conjunction with NASA and the US Space
and Rocket Centre.
Geraldine is the head of the Science Department at St Martin’s Preparatory
School and has been a science teacher at the prep school for the past
seven years. Prior to St Martin’s she had been exposed to a wide spectrum
of learning styles and techniques in both mainstream and special
needs teaching.
Because of her love for science she worked for a company called “The Nutty
Scientist” at the Rand Easter Show during her Easter Holiday in 2017. The
company partnered with St Martin’s and along with ten St Martin’s High
School students who for a ten day period were able to showcase their
adoration for science. “The time I spent presenting scientific principles at the
show brought me acclaim and I even had a mention in the local edition of
Child Magazine,” Geraldine said.
Later in 2017 Geraldine was selected to attend the Honeywell Educators at
the Space Academy Conference, which was held at the US Space and Rocket
Centre in Huntsville, Alabama. “During my time there I attended lectures
at the University of Alabama, as well as participating in engineering and
design challenges which included rocket construction and launch, payload
operations and many others. I met and interacted with teachers from around
the world and forged valuable relationships,” she added.
In 2018 Geraldine spearheaded the programme which saw St Martin’s as one
of the eight schools from around the world piloting a science programme for
Honeywell in conjunction with NASA and the US Space and Rocket Centre.
Through various challenges and experiments they were able to complete the
tasks that were outlined in meritorious fashion. This pilot programme proved
to be a great success.
Geraldine takes much pride in her teaching and her position at St Martin’s.
“As a Math and Science Major in University, being able to impart knowledge
with my pupils in a manner that develops curiosity and encourages critical
thinking is very important to me. St Martin’s has been the perfect platform
for me to develop as an educator. The school has a great ethos and is value
driven. Focus on quality instead of quantity and the ability to identify
each child’s strength is what sets St Martin’s apart from other schools.”
Geraldine said.
GIVE IT,
don’t bin it
Make a difference in your community this National Book Week and International
Literacy Day by donating unwanted children’s books.
Literacy is a human right and the
foundation of all learning.
Did you know that 58 percent of
households do not have access to
a single leisure book? A staggering
78 percent of Grade fours are not
able to read with meaning. Only
47 percent of the South African
population read printed books.
South Africa has a reading crisis
and these are just a few of the
shocking statistics.
Caxton Joburg South, with the
help of the public, wants to make
a difference in ensuring all the
above-mentioned statistics are
pushed to 100 percent in an
attempt to eradicate illiteracy in
our communities. We are asking the
public to donate children’s books to
our office at 1 Eaton Terrace, New
Redruth, which we will distribute
as part of our reading campaign for
National Book Week, which is from
September 2 to 8 and International
Literacy Day on September 8.
Together we can make a difference
in our community.
SMART
saving
Saving money is one of the most important aspects to securing your financial future.
When taught early, it becomes easy to develop good financial habits
that will yield long-term benefits.
Ester Ochse, from FNB, said encouraging
children to save from an early age
plays an important role and will help
when they get older.
“Exposing your children to saving and
managing their own finances early will
allow them to make mistakes, learn
from their mistakes and identify habits
that will help them be more responsible
with their finances.”
Ochse shared tips on how parents
can encourage children to save:
Help them set a goal:
Firstly, you need to help them set
a goal and demonstrate what they
stand to achieve if they reach their
goal. For example, if your child wants
to purchase a new TV game, encourage
them to save from the pocket
money they receive and set a timeline
to achieving the goal. When they
reach the goal, they will see the benefits of saving and working towards
what you need.
Wants vs. needs:
Understanding the difference between needs and wants is crucial
in helping children avoid spending money on unnecessary expenses. Once they
understand the difference, they will be more cautious about where and how their
money is spent.
Match their savings:
Consider matching your child’s contribution. For example, if their monthly target is to
save R300 a month, match it with R300 to make it R600. This will encourage them to
continue saving because they will see progress and value of their savings.
Lead by example:
When you receive your salary every month, sit down with your children and show
them how much you are saving towards their school fees. At the end of the year,
show them how much you have saved as well as the interest received on savings. Furthermore,
show them the discounts that applies when paying school fees in advance
and demonstrate how much you will save because of paying school fees in advance.
“One of the best ways of assuring your children they are capable of saving, is to let
them take control of their savings journey. Guide them through the money management
journey and help them track their progress monthly. This is one of the best
ways to get them started on their savings journey,” said Ochse.
Mhondoro
We love a bush getaway...and one where ellies drink from the pool, the rooms
are OTT comfy and five star food is a special treat.
When you’re sitting having lunch on the verandah and an ellie
strolls past, stopping to drink from the pool in front of you, you
know you’re at a special spot.
More so when an hour later on a game drive you see a leopard
cubs chasing after her as if to cheer her on.
We’ve just spent a couple of days at Mhondoro Safari Lodge &
The Welgevonden area is fairly
rocky and hilly, but the lodge is
built overlooking a flat plain, with a
waterhole in front to which animals
drift all day ... families of warthog
and a dazzle of zebras ... the ellies
appear to ignore it completely and
head straight for the pool, much to
the delight of the guests – most of
whom are international, so imagine
the thrill!
Besides what turned out to include
some sensational animal sightings,
a highlight of our stay was also the
food ... this five-star lodge prides itself
on the fine dining options offered,
and deservedly so. While the boma
dinner was been-there-eaten-that,
other meals were exceptional ...
think eggs Benedict with truffle oil
hollandaise or French toast with
thyme-infused honey and nuts for
breakfast, or later in the day a dish of
beetroot elements (pickled beetroot
and beetroot sorbet, goat’s cheese
and rocket, topped with pumpkin
seed ... bliss), a wonderful wild
mushroom risotto with truffle oil and
Parmesan, and quite possibly the
best rack of lamb we’ve ever eaten.
As much of this as possible comes
from the lodge’s large, flourishing
veggie and herb garden – and it’s
leaning towards being totally selfsufficient
and off-the-grid within the
next year or so.
Accommodating just 26 guests in
total, there are a few chic-African and
edgy European-decorated suites to
choose from, as well as a romantic
Honeymoon Suite, which has a
Honestly. Is there anything
more dramatically wonderful
than an African sunrise or
sunset? We think not!
Fine dining with a view.
heated plunge pool and outside
deck with day bed that overlooks
the waterhole. The suites – think
mosquito-net-draped beds and
roaring fireplaces – sleep either
two or four guests ... but there’s a
magnificent three-bedroom villa.
A marvellous choice for a family or
group of friends, the villa comes with
a private butler, chef and ranger,
and is exceptionally equipped with
a pool, lounge, dining and outdoor
entertainment areas, (it even has its
own gym for heaven’s sake).
Other standout features at the
lodge, where children of all ages are
welcome, include the underground
waterhole hide, which is connected
to the main lodge by a tunnel,
allowing you to safely race off and
see the animals close up, a lovely
spa for those who need even
more spoiling than being out in
the bush provides, a heated pool
and sauna and two great areas
for youngsters – one indoors, one
out. There’s a shooting range, and
rock art excursions, bush walks and
rhino tracking, and really brilliant
yoga retreats can be arranged – get
together six or more yoga friends
and experience yoga in the bush at
dawn or sunset ... how amazing!
Rates range from R5675 a person a
night, sharing, with children under
two free; three to nine paying 50 per
cent of the adult fee, 10 upwards
paying full rate. The Villa exclusive-use
rate is R45455 for four guests, R9091
per extra adult and R5051 per extra
child between three and 11. There are,
however, often specials, so keep an eye
on the website. All rates are inclusive
of meals, selected house drinks, two
game drives a day and reserved
entrance, as well as scheduled transfers
from the Welgevonden main gate.
Children can’t go on regular game
drives, but Bumble Drives can be
arranged and there are babysitters,
as well as fun activities. The area is
malaria free, and the drive is a little less
than three hours from Joburg and OR
Tambo airport – unless you happily
drive along in a daze and miss the N3
turn-off, when you could, as we did,
take the road (much) less travelled, in
which case add, oh, say two hours or
so to your drive time!
