Vanguard, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2019—15 Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State (middle); President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo (left) and leader of the delegation of returnee African-American Igbo, Ada Brown, when the governor hosted the African-Americans of Igbo origin at the Government House, Enugu, yesterday. 2023 presidency: Northerners're not God, Ukuta replies Ango Abdullahi By Chinedu Adonu E NUGU—RENOWN politician and former commissioner in Old Anambra State, Chief Maxi Ukuta, has attacked prominent Arewa leader, Professor Ango Abdullahi, over his position that the presidency would still remain in the North after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure. Ukuta said Abdullahi’s position is capable of creating disunity and injustice, even as he expressed surprise that a person of Professor Abdullahi’s status would be supporting something that could divide the country. His word: “I am surprised at some of the statements ascribed to Ango Abdullahi. Since he retired as Vice Chancellor, I wouldn’t regard him as talking at anytime for the interest of the nation. One would expect that with his age and level of experience, he would be a jolly patriot. “However, if he feels in his conscience that after all these years of presidency rotating between the North and South-West, that it is right to say it will not come to South-East, I wish him good luck. “Ango Abdullahi and some other northerners are not God to decide the next Presidency.” Ukuta said he had nothing against Igbo presidency, but more concerned about development and provision of infrastructure, irrespective of who provides them. According to him, “not too long ago, we had many eminent sons and daughters from the South- East in very sensitive positions of government. “As we speak, we cannot feel the impact of infrastructure or human development of our people. “What I am passionate about is the development of our people, especially infrastructure and human development. That is my concern. “I can’t tell you that by 2023, the presidency will come to South- East, but we must put our house in order. There must be unity among our people. They have shown very bad aspect of our people to other Nigerians. “When a presidential candidate picked an Igbo son to be his running mate, I expected that we would come together and work with him, not to castigate him. With this type of attitude, we are going nowhere.” ...on Biafra, Civil War On the agitation for Biafra, Ukuta said: “If I By Chinenyeh Ozor HEAD of Department, HoD, Political Science and Director, Centre for American Studies University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, Professor Jona Onuoha, has said the closure of Nigerian border was a temporal measure and has reduced insecurity in the country due to Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, free movement of persons, goods and services. He said: “ECOWAS protocol of free movement of persons permits all have to be honest with you, what the South-East requires is justice. “I remember a lecture by the Great Zik of Africa in 1972 at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, with the title “Unity with Diversity,” where he told us that there are greater advantages when we remain as one. “What is disturbing us is definitely the injustice. I prefer all of us being in a united Nigeria, but justice must be the key word. The advantages of being united are enormous.” Reminded that Asaba people recently held a ceremony to remember the massacre of Biafrans and if he believed that the world has fully been informed on what happened during Civil War, he said it was necessary that people who advised Yakubu Gowon to declare war to speak out and say why they waged the war. His words: “I tell you something; this is a mere member-states, goods and services within the ECOWAS sub-region to enhance economic development. “Since ECOWAS protocol of free movement came into place, all roads lead to Nigeria: robbery, terrorism, banditry and all manner of criminalities. Instead of enhancing development, it affects economic development of Nigeria.” Professor Onuoha disclosed these in an interview with journalists at UNN, saying there was need for Nigeria to review its economic policy towards ECOWAS. academic exercise. Nobody has gone back to look into the causes of the civil war. There is need for that. It was only General Gowon that went to Asaba to say sorry for what happened to them. “But to me, it should be a national approach where we as Nigerians will say to the Biafrans ‘a lot of injustice has been meted out to you, we are very sorry’ and promise that we will all work hand in hand to make sure that such a thing will never happen again: not only in Asaba, but other parts of the country that injustice has been meted out. “It is true that some of us participated in the war but never knew what was the cause of the war. “It would be interesting if those alive now that participated in influencing Gowon will tell us what was their motive, to allow us build a better nation and stop all these agitations here and there.” Border closure reduces insecurity—Don He added: “President Muhammadu Buhari has to be commended for reviewing economic policy of ECOWAS protocol of free movement of persons, since it has led to increase in crimes.” He said the economic sabotage that follows in terms of importation of goods and services, including rice which the country can produce, makes it good for the border to be closed for a while “to rethink the cost benefit of ECOWAS protocol of free movement of persons, goods and services.” Octogenarian murdered, buried head down in Enugu community By Ikechukwu Odu NSUKKA—AN 85- year-old man, Daniel Attah, has been murdered in his farm at Umuida, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State. Attah, who was last seen on Saturday was discovered in a shallow grave yesterday, at his country home, Umuoyiga, in Umuida community with some parts of his body already severed. According to an eyewitness, the community organised a search party for him after waiting for his return for two days, adding that youths of the community discovered his remains in a shallow grave where he was buried head-down. When Vanguard visited the family, one of his daughters, Amaka Daniel, said: “Hoodlums have taken our pride. He left for his farm on Saturday, but did not return home as usual. By Vincent Ujumadu A WKA—NIGERIAN businessmen have allegedly been diverting fake imported polish to Cameroon, following the brick wall they have met in selling the product in Nigerian markets. Chairman of Asco Investment, sole distributor of Kiwi products in Nigeria, Chief Sam Anyanwutaku, who spoke in Awka during the destruction of 21,600 tins of fake Kiwi polish worth N42 million, said his battle against those who import fake polish into the country had made the few daring ones to divert the sale to Cameroon and other neighbouring countries. The burnt tins polish were confiscated in some markets in Onitsha, following an order of the Federal High Court presided over by Justice I B Gafai. While commending the judiciary, security operatives and the foreign partners for supporting the efforts of his company to wipe out fake kiwi products in Nigeria, Anyanwutaku said he would not relent until all markets in Nigeria were free of fake polish. His words: “It is only few “We searched for him everywhere for two days, only to discover his decomposing body, yesterday, in a shallow grave where the hoodlums also tried to cover the body with palm fronds. “Some parts of his body were no longer intact when we found him. Evil doers will never go unpunished.” Residents, who spoke to Vanguard said the deceased was the head of his clan, Umuoyiga, the same as the chairman of the local government area, Uwakwe Ezeja. They wondered what could make someone kill an easy-going old man. They equally confirmed that when the council boss, Ezeja, was informed of the development, he rallied round and informed the police, Ogrute Division, who deposited his body at an undisclosed morgue, awaiting investigation. ‘Bizmen diverting fake products to Cameroon’ people that still engage in it and we hope to completely wipe them out soon. In the past, majority of kiwi polish in Nigeria were fake, but through our efforts, the issue has reduced considerably.” According to him, there were no more fake kiwi products in Lagos as his organisation had fought those faking the product to a standstill, adding that it was only in Onitsha that one could still find them. He said even those selling the fake product did so under cover, as most of the people involved had resorted to exporting the fake product to Cameroon. “The ones we just burnt were already made to be exported before we intercepted them,” Anyanwutaku added. Counsel to Asco Investment, Mr. Tagbo Anaeto, described the faking of genuine products as a great economic sabotage, as according to him, it was an infringement on the trademark of registered owners of Kiwi products. He expressed gratitude to the judiciary for the order.
