WE GOT COMMENDED?
When we were handed the society
at the beginning of our
second year of university,
we were all filled with a huge amount
of enthusiasm to do as much as we
possibly could so that everyone on
campus always had something to look
out for from us. We were constantly
reaching out to the community to ask
them how we could help them so that
we could accomplish that goal. However,
when we were doing all that we
never anticipated anything from it. We
simply did it to try to make some kind
of difference and to keep ourselves
busy! Therefore, when we heard that
we were being nominated for an award
at a huge charity event like the North
West awards was… well to say we were
surprised is an understatement.
We were more used to dirty boots and
raincoats, so the idea of dressing up in
fancy suits and dresses was a very exciting
prospect to us. Walking down a
red carpet to be greeted with prosecco
was truly a welcomed new experience
and certainly made a change from the
student dives we were all used too.
Upon entering the ballroom where
the event was held, I know I felt like
I was in Hogwarts with the beautiful
table layouts and candles. As was to be
expected the food was also an outstanding
three course meal after which the
awards were delivered.
The lead up to our event category
was slightly nerve wracking as we sat
fingers crossed, hoping to win. Some of
us were managing expectations, as it
was a very competitive category. Then
when the time came for our results,
we were all shocked and delighted to
be announced the winner of the highly
commended award. The walk up to
the stage felt instant, all the hard work
we poured our efforts into all seemed
to pay off at once and filled us all with
pride of a job well done.
The only thing I would give as advice is
to just get out there and apply yourself.
It’s easy to get caught up in the
day to day of your life, but I bet there
are many people out there who could
be doing a lot more if they just took
that extra step and started saying yes
to a few more opportunities. It always
seems like everything is so much more
difficult than it is before you start doing
it, whether that be anything from cooking,
to assignments. However, when
you look back after all the work you’ve
done it sometimes it can feel like
you’ve hardly done anything difficult
at all.
