Hi, I’m Lequane, since my last update before the new academic year, a lot has changed. I would like to share with you the campaigning I have done and planning to do. ‘Know The Rules’ is a big one this year. I am in the planning process of creating video content all based on various ‘University rules and regulations’. I am wanting to provide quick short clips explaining basic procedures when it comes to things such as academic appeals, malpractice hearings, extenuating circumstances and many more. The UCSU support team and I have received many cases where students need support on this and being aware of the processes and how to avoid breaking the ‘student code of conduct’ is crucially beneficial for everyone undergoing their studies. An online quiz with prizes to win is another resource I want to apply. There is a learning aspect to it but it is also worth taking part in. I will keep you all updated on the progress of this throughout the year. This one is for you academic reps. Now recently we have gone through some rep training, I just want to say thank you to those that came and gave their feedback on the sessions. This year I really want to help represent you all more efficiently. There are many big changes coming up and I need your help in achieving them so they best benefit the student body. With that being said let me just start by saying I am here for you if you need help campaigning, representing your class and genuinely improving the student experience. Your voice matters to us and we need you to speak up about this so we can best represent you when we approach the University for change. Hit me up on social media or send me an email. I am mostly in the Fusehill Street Learning Gateway but I travel to other campuses throughout the week so if you see me around, stop me as I am always happy to sit and chat. Big shout out to all the liberation society groups we have at UCSU. You have spoken and your voice has been heard. I have been working under the radar to really improve race and cultural diversity here at the university. So far, ACS (African Caribbean Society) has flourished over the past few months. Members are rising and we have developed strong relationships, a family if you like. I believe it is time for more groups to speak out. Keep up the good work and never give up. It is time to prove to everyone who we are and why we are here. 6 | SQUEALER

If you want to be involved / support the idea - contact Katie, your community and partnership officer at Katie.brookes@cumbria.ac.uk STUDENTS’ UNION Hi, I’m Katie, your community and partnership officer for UCSU. My job role includes anything from running events on campus to increase student engagement and vibrancy, to dealing with any issues that arise about our university facilities. I also love being active in supporting student groups, volunteering and making activities on campus more accessible for all. I am also the student director on the board of directors, which entails sitting on meetings with the vice chancellors executive team to get involved in discussions on various areas about the University of Cumbria and to get your student voice across. Since I started in July, the officers have been very busy with lots of training, planning, visiting each campus and we even spoke at graduations in July. As a union, throughout Welcome Week we ran and supported over 150 different events across all campuses. We had a wide range of events that took place, all from showing new students what the nightlife is like near their campus, to morning markets, family fun days and much more. Many of our new students may have seen the officers in their check-in talks, where we introduced ourselves and talked about what UCSU offers and what we can do for you! My main campaign for the year is B.E.S.T, which stands for Bringing Everybody Socially Together. This campaign aims to create a 24-hour student social space on each campus, which will be a space for students to call their own, to go to have some down time, socialise with friends and meet new people, especially during long lecture breaks and lunchtime. If you want to get involved or have your say of what should be in this space, please do not hesitate to contact me via the email address above. Another campaign you might see around is I AM WHO I AM. This was created to raise awareness and build individuals knowledge up about the challenges and issues both LGBTQ+ and disabilities individuals often experience on a daily basis. Therefore, through accessible activities and inclusive environments, it is time for these individuals to feel supported. SQUEALER | 7
