A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR ALEXANDRINA DIAC DIRECTOR GENERAL THE PERSEVERANCE THAT KEEPS US STANDING Academic work can be compared to working the land, whereby one must adapt to the needs that each new season brings. Sowing seeds during the spring is hardly the same as gathering the harvest in autumn. And yet, there is a certain continuity among the different types of work that a gardener must do. The consequences of their work can only be generous and abundant when they remain constant and persistent throughout the seasons. Likewise for a life of study. This is why we can say that the end of the 2018-2019 academic year can only be followed by the beginning of the 2019-2020 year. In keeping with this path of perseverance, we had the convocation ceremony in the spring, and the opening of the new academic year in the fall. Perseverance is an “intellectual habit.” You can see it in the “work site” that is the garden of academic programs. Thanks to this, students can reap the richness of their professors’ “fruit baskets.” Academic success is the fruit of perseverance, which inspires and changes the way in which one lives and thinks. Perseverance is the “morning and evening sequence of events.” On the path of holiness, conversion is only the beginning, while perseverance is the rest. For “indoor gardening” requires a great deal of perseverance and a good attitude. Here I draw on some of my reflections from this issue of Essentials, which, I hope, can give you a taste of what is being proposed here. Thanks to you, the Foundation has also been able to persevere in its mission to support the Dominican University College, through its grants and bursaries that amounted to $902,880 for the 2018- 2019 year. Your perseverance and generosity have also provided support for the College and its ongoing projects. Along with many others, I would like to name: Chair Benoît-Lacroix on culture and faith, Chair Jean-Marie Roger Tillard, dedicated to consecrated life, Chair Noël-Mailloux in ethics, care and spirituality, as well as the Head Start program, which provides children and adolescents an introduction to philosophy.
