@XAVIERCOLLEGE
XAVIER COLLEGE
Xavier College is a Catholic school founded by the Society of Jesus
(the Jesuits). Its guiding principles are based on the vision and
teachings of St Ignatius of Loyola.
The College fi rst opened on Barkers Road in 1878 and to this day
enlightens generations of fi ne young men and women. Home to the
iconic Xavier Memorial Chapel, the Senior Campus is a culmination
of modern innovation and rich historical preservation.
Two further locations, Burke Hall Campus in Kew and Kostka Hall
Campus in Brighton, accommodate Xavier’s Early and Middle
Years students.
Xavier College enrols both girls and boys up until Year 4 and offers a
boys-only environment from Year 5 through to Year 12.
Boarding has been a part of the College since it fi rst opened its
doors over 140 years ago. The boarding house is located at the
very heart of the Senior Campus, meaning that students are fully
engaged with College life.
Embedded within the philosophy of a Jesuit education is a
commitment to service. The Ignatian Service program encourages
students to be ‘Men and Women for Others’. Students at Xavier
are continuously encouraged to utilise their God-given gifts to be of
service to the community.
Xavier College is a high performing academic school and has been
consistently ranked within the top secondary schools in the state.
Students are supported in an environment where they can fl ourish
and passionately pursue excellence in all things.
Alongside traditional curriculum offerings, broad opportunities exist
for the education of the whole person, which is central to a Jesuit
education. Students are afforded opportunities to travel overseas on
a range of language, music, leadership, faith and service tours.
As a Jesuit school, Xavier College strives to embrace innovative ways
of teaching and learning. Principal Mr William Doherty says that in
order to prepare for the future, we must continually discern and refl ect
on our reality.
“While Xavier has been educating children in Melbourne for 140
years, it is our capacity to continue to ask the questions pertinent to
our modern world, to pursue excellence in the present, and to discern
both truth and innovation to serve the needs of others into the future,”
he said.
“The College actively seeks to collaborate with world-credentialed
programs, tertiary institutions and other learning systems to positively
inform our practice, inspire our learning and learners, nurture
their wellbeing and fi re their imagination to create, connect and
communicate, and to make a difference in their world”.
Xavier College offers Digital Technologies classes from the Early Years
through to VCE. An established STEM program, including a tour to
NASA in the US last year, provides students with the opportunity to
learn practical skills and knowledge through coding and robotics.
To help students plan for the future, a comprehensive careers program
provides guidance, counselling and tertiary information. In Year 10, all
students undergo career aptitude testing to help them make more
informed subject choices moving into VCE.
Inherent to Xavier is the importance of serving and contributing to
the wider community. Students care for others in aged care facilities,
specialist schools and charity organisations through the Ignatian
Service program, working towards creating a better future for those
living on the margins. After students leave the College, they are
encouraged to continue their volunteer work through the Xavier Social
Justice Network.
QUESTION
@PN8X0Ovn
@iF0O9lVe
PRESHIL
Preshil is the oldest progressive school in Australia, focusing on the
education of each individual child and the social relationships, which
support their development as critical and creative thinkers. It remains
a deliberately small school, welcoming children into the Kindergarten
at three years of age, and following them through to the completion of
their Secondary Schooling in Year 12.
Preshil is an International Baccalaureate World School, with
authorisation to teach the IB Middle Years and Diploma Programmes
(IBMYP and IBDP) and candidacy for the Primary Years Programme
(IBPYP). Scholarships are available for these IB programmes, which
align perfectly with Preshil’s focus on intellectual challenge, inquiry
and research-based learning.
Collaborative, independent and directed learning underpin the
curriculum at Preshil’s Arlington Primary campus, where individuality
and creativity are valued. In the Secondary School, the IB continues
to support an outstanding Arts, Drama, Film and Music program, with
multi-age Electives focusing on extending students’ interests, building
understanding of careers opportunities and expanding on the STEAM
elements of the curriculum.
The Preshil approach to schooling uses neither the fear of failure
nor the threat of punishment to motivate children. Preshil does not
demand conformity or unthinking obedience to arbitrary rules. The
relationship between teachers and students is respectful and focused
on achieving outstanding learning outcomes, trust and a genuine
regard for each individual.
PENOLA CATHOLIC COLLEGE
Being real is about being the very best version of yourself, shaped
by the image of God and the example of Saint Mary MacKillop. It is
evident in the amazing learning experiences available to students,
whether they be in any of the College’s 21st century learning areas,
in outdoor classrooms or immersed in the cultures of France, Italy or
Japan as part of Penola’s extensive extra-curricular opportunities.
At Penola through the provision of extensive subject offerings,
outstanding music, sporting and artistic programs and the use of
emergent technologies students are able to find and develop their
real self and to celebrate being the very best person they can be!
This development is facilitated by skilled, passionate and caring
teachers who embrace the concept of real life learning. Teachers
understand that they are working with individuals, all of whom
have different learning needs, challenges and styles. Teaching
and learning is targeted to cater for the specific learning styles of
boys and girls, within a co-educational learning environment which
respects and affirms the strengths of all students whilst providing
skills to thrive within the real world where males and females will
live and work together.
Penola is a two campus College comprised of a junior, middle
and senior school. Students at the Junior campus at Glenroy are
provided with a comprehensive transition to secondary school
that will equip them with the skills, knowledge and confidence
to succeed in their chosen pathway through middle and senior
education. Just a short bus or train trip away is the College’s Senior
campus which features an innovative, engaging and rewarding Year
9 program that nurtures students through the challenging middle
teenage years. Students are engaged, extended and supported
through an action packed, fun-filled learning journey that provides
the ideal entry into the rigours of senior studies.
Penola’s senior school has a broad range of subject choices
that caters for the learning pathways of boys and girls, offering
VCE, VCAL and an extensive range of VET subjects. Students are
supported in preparing for the real world, whether that be attending
University or TAFE, entering traineeships or apprenticeships or
moving directly into the workforce. Students are provided with
extensive career counselling, pastoral care, work experience and
vocational preparation throughout senior studies. Penola has an
excellent record of helping students achieve personal excellence,
thus enabling them to fulfil their dreams and ambitions in the real
world areas that matter to them.
The College’s Religious Education program focuses on providing
students with a contemporary understanding of the Jesus story,
Penola’s Catholic traditions and the story of Saint Mary MacKillop.
These rich, thought provoking experiences help students develop
strong values which will help them navigate the many challenges
that await them in the real world, beyond the school gates.
School years should be happy and fun-filled years. At Penola
the wellbeing of students is the College’s first priority. Pastoral
care structures, dedicated staff and specialist programs ensure
that all students are able to thrive within a safe, caring and
nurturing learning community. Extra-curricular programs such as
sport, music, drama and outdoor education deepen the learning
opportunities for students, whilst adding fun, adventure, fulfilment
and a greater understanding of the true ‘Penola Experience’.
Exciting opportunities are available to join Penola’s vibrant coeducational
learning community. Enrolments are now being
taken for Year 7 entry in 2020 - all information is available at
www.penola.vic.edu.au or by contacting the Marketing and
Development Officer to organise a tour with the Principal.
NURTURING A LOVE OF LEARNING
NURTURING A LOVE OF LEARNING
Loyola College is a Catholic co-educational College which operates in the
Ignatian tradition. Since its foundation in 1980, the College has cultivated
a strong Ignatian charism which fosters the development of the whole
person encouraging each student to discover his or her God-given talents
and to place these at the service of others.
The College aspires to develop articulate, adaptive, discerning and
confident young men and women of conscience committed to living the
values of Jesus Christ in a global community.
Loyola College is committed to providing its students with a broad range
of opportunities to develop life-long connections with their learning. The
College offers a supportive transition program through its base learning
groups, which is further enhanced through a comprehensive Personal
Development Program and House-based vertical pastoral care system. In
offering an Ignatian education, Loyola College provides its students with
a full range of activities and learning experiences which take place
beyond the classroom. These include an extensive co-curricular program,
a variety of overseas experiences, opportunities for student leadership,
active involvement in Christian service activities and a comprehensive
sporting program. These activities foster the full potential of each student
and encourage personal growth, recognise and promote leadership, and
develop positive relationships between students and staff members.
Loyola College now has a contemporary cutting edge Performing Arts
complex featuring 500-seat theatre, recording studio, and dance studio.
As a community school, Loyola families are strongly encouraged to be
engaged in their child’s learning.
ELTHAM COLLEGE
ELTHAM College grows the heart and mind of each child. They
believe school is a daring adventure where children learn to think
for themselves in preparation for a future of exciting possibilities.
ELTHAM College offers students opportunities beyond the traditional
academic domain, with exceptional visual and performing arts, sport,
technology, hospitality, outdoor education, international exchange
and intercultural connections programs that challenge and inspire.
Schools are constantly juggling the needs of a conventional
classroom and the demands of an ever changing, connected world.
At ELTHAM College they are committed to providing experiences that
respond to the intellectual and personal diversity of students while
creating spaces and opportunities for collaborative learning. The
young people at ELTHAM are encouraged to see life as a chance for
unlimited learning, while educators have the privilege of helping to
grow the hearts and minds of the next generation.
The College is constantly adapting to the changing needs of young
people and their world. They support students on their learning
journey to unlock talents through one of Victoria’s broadest
curriculums. More importantly, teachers guide each young person to
become empowered with the self-confidence and independence to
manage all aspects of their future lives. They aim for their graduates
to step into life after school as proactive young people, equipped with
the skills and desire to continue successful learning.
At ELTHAM the aim is to ensure that young people can relate to
the world, understand their effect on it and use their creativity to
help shape it in positive ways. Staff ensure that young people are
nurtured, can aim high in life, continue learning, form successful
relationships, juggle the demands of life, achieve independence and
greet opportunities with confidence. They aim to promote harmonious
student-teacher partnerships and value each parent’s participation as
true education partners. In addition, the co-educational environment
creates equal opportunities for girls and boys to be successful
individually and together.
ELTHAM College ultimately provides a supportive and challenging
environment where every person has the opportunity to discover
their talents and believe in their own potential. They offer a truly
independent education that recognises each young person’s
individuality and provides challenging and diverse subject
combinations that inspire, motivate and captivate the creative,
intellectual and dynamic learner in everyone. With a belief that all
students should strive to achieve their personal best, they foster
creativity and risk to allow young people to learn without fear of
failure. The College encourages students to develop problemsolving
skills to build confidence and encourage positive actions
and a ‘can do’ attitude. All of this combines to ensure that each
ELTHAM graduate leaves the College with the skills, knowledge and
determination to succeed in the changing world.
The College prides itself on not having a one-size fits all policy,
but instead fosters a culture and program that works with each
individual, empowering them to own their behaviour, be accountable
and develop as resilient young men and women. Not only do they
make learning exciting and relevant to life, they also create a
liberating environment where teachers and students share trust
and friendship and work together in mutual respect.
That’s why schooling at ELTHAM is built on a culture that champions
not only getting the right answers, but also asking the right
questions – prizing individual expression, innovative thinking and
the development of dispositions that promote lifelong learning. The
future requires people who know how to learn, who can grow and
change with the world around them. ELTHAM students are ready
for the future.
Located in an extraordinary environment students experience an
I enjoyed my time at
“ Salesian. I made a lot of
friends, and I learnt a lot
about the value of
discipline. With great
discipline, you can take
advantage of great
opportunities.
JOHN PAUL COLLEGE
John Paul College aims to be a centre of excellence and inspiration
within the community. Students are encouraged to be motivated and
passionate about both their learning and their community involvement.
The College aims to challenge students; to inspire them to achieve, to
be all that they can be and to take advantage of the many opportunities
available. Students can be involved in a whole array of sports as well
as taking part in debating, public speaking, community service, youth
ministry, social justice, theatre sports, chess club and performing arts
activities.
JPC’s first class facilities include a modern and well-appointed
Resource Centre and its Food Technology Centre and Science
laboratories are state of the art. The Ngargee Centre for Performing
and Visual Arts is a beautiful space; comprising modern facilities for
music, drama, dance, media and fine arts.
Social justice initiatives are flourishing through fundraising efforts
and immersion programs to the Philippines and East Timor. Students
willingly volunteer on a number of initiatives and the College is very
proud of its young people who, in their service to others, enrich both
their own lives and those around them.
John Paul College aims to build minds that will thrive in our increasingly
interconnected world. Flexible technology and a diverse curriculum
allow each individual student to gain the tools necessary for them
to succeed. Mirroring the functional interdependence of the world
today, JPC is working towards cross-curricular projects. For example,
a drone might be built in Product Design, programmed as part of
Digital Technologies and flown as part of Media/Art assignments.
JPC aims to give students the knowledge, skills and attributes they
will need to flourish in life, learning and work. JPC educates students
to be independent, creative and active citizens with the concern for
other people and society as a whole.
RED
ROCK
CHRIS T IAN
C OLLE G E
Red Rock Christian College has a long and strong history of educating,
supporting and empowering primary students, and as of 2018, young
people in their secondary years.
At RRCC our belief that all young people are fearfully and wonderfully
made is at the heart of what we do. It motivates us to seek ways to see all
young people flourish. Our strengths-based wellbeing approach enables
us to focus on what is ‘right’ with people, to empower young people to
embrace their strengths, build a strong positive identity and establish
healthy relationships.
We have partnered with Peter Hutton, former principal of Templestowe
College, to create a flexible learning model which enables students to
progress according to learning readiness and not age. What we do is
empower students to own their learning, pursue their passions and
influence their world with integrity.
It is in the primary years that foundations are laid; foundations for building
a life of learning, for forming healthy mindsets, and for developing
character. A child’s experiences and environment in the early years are
highly influential in the way they see themselves and others. In the primary
years, we focus on developing a healthy identity, resilience of character
and the ability to value others and to interact positively with peers and
teachers. We know with a good foundation our children will be better
placed to thrive in and not just survive their years of school.
The Secondary years at RRCC is a place to build on this foundation – to
coach and walk alongside our teens as they become more independent in
their thinking, as they explore and form opinions about the world and their
place in the world. As a Christian school, we help our students understand
God’s loving view of the world and its people and to recognise the unique
ways in which they can bring life, justice and hope to the world.
The Secondary years are about honouring and supporting the capacity
within our young people to increasingly manage and choose their
education. It is about equipping them with character, skills and
understandings that will prepare them to influence their world with
integrity. From Prep right through their secondary years, education at Red
Rock Christian College is about empowering young people to know their
strengths, pursue their passions and to make a difference in the world.
REGIONAL VICTORIA
The journey
begins at
St Paul’s
Recognised as one of Australia’s
leading regional schools, St Paul’s is an
independent, co-educational school with
campuses in Warragul and Traralgon.
St Paul’s is set in a safe and supportive rural
environment and has a proven track record
for VCE excellence and offers an extensive
co-curricular program.
From the early years right through to Year
12, St Paul’s encourages a Growth Mindset
and our teachers focus on bringing out the
best in every student.
The School has a culture of which students
are proud to be part and a community
where respect and support for one another
is central to the way people interact.
one of
Australia’s
leading
regional schools
We invite you to discover what sets
St Paul’s apart from other schools by
contacting our Head of Admissions
on 03 5623 5833 or
ST PAULʼS ANGLICAN GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Why St Paul’s is the school of choice for Gippsland families
At St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School, learning is about more than
just what takes place in the classroom.
Students at St Paul’s are known and highly regarded for their genuine
care and compassion for others and their enthusiasm for all that they
do. Their love for the School is evident in the way they treat each
other, respect their teachers and wholeheartedly contribute to their
wider community.
Having graduates who are such fabulous young people does not
happen by accident. St Paul’s is blessed to have a strong and
supportive parent body, high-quality and committed teachers as well
as students who are fresh and eager to learn. Teachers who are new
to the School often comment that they can “get on with teaching”
rather than having to focus on behaviour management and addressing
students who are disengaged.
When your child joins St Paul’s you can be confi dent that the positive
learning culture at St Paul’s translates to an environment where
teachers can focus on bringing out the best in every child and where
children understand that they are at school to learn. Classrooms
at every level are notable for the focus shown by the students and
enthusiasm for learning that exists.
From the early years right through to Year 12, St Paul’s encourages
a Growth Mindset and an understanding that with the right attitude
anything is possible. Time and time again the School’s most successful
graduates say that while they may not always have been the ‘most
naturally gifted,’ their hard work and determination progressed them
to where they wanted to go.
As a school that seeks to bring out the best in every child, St Paul’s
also offers a wide range of opportunities both inside and outside the
classroom. Students are offered the opportunity and encouragement
to succeed as they engage in an extensive co-curricular program of
sporting, music, performing arts, personal development, outdoor
education, visual arts and cultural activities along with many
opportunities for academic enrichment and support as necessary.
In addition, secondary students have numerous opportunities to
experience the world. Current programs include service tours to
Rwanda, East Timor and South East Asia, and cultural study tours to
Japan, France and China.
The Elite Sports Performers Program offered at St Paul’s from Years
7 to 12 currently assists over 60 student athletes to achieve their
sporting dreams while supporting them to achieve at school. The
program provides students with opportunities to develop their sporting
abilities through the involvement of Elite Athlete guest speakers,
sessions with staff from
the Victorian Institute of
Sport, biannual ‘behind
the scenes’ AIS Camp
and online monitoring of
student athlete wellness
and stress levels.
Teachers at St Paul’s
understand what it
takes to have a student
achieve all of which he
or she is capable. As a
consequence, St Paul’s
has a proven track record
for VCE excellence and an outstanding record of Tertiary placement
for all VCE students regardless of their ATAR score or area of interest.
St Paul’s was started by local families as a community initiative, was
nurtured by local families and is now very proud to be one of the
leading schools in Regional Australia.
If you are interested in seeing the School in action please phone the
School’s Head of Admissions on 03 5623 5833 to arrange a tour.
Boarders at Melbourne Girls Grammar live in
the epicentre of all things Melbourne – sports
and relaxation, culture, shopping and wonderful
on campus facilities. The girls have access to
the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Tan running
track just across the road from campus, along
with the many internationally recognised
cultural, sporting and entertainment facilities of
Melbourne. They join a rich, vibrant and diverse
community of girls from all over Australia and
overseas. One of the great strengths of boarding
at MGGS is the quality and depth of the
relationships and special bonds built between
the girls, the School and its families.
