Glencoe 150: Looking back
on a year of celebration
In looking back on 2019 and the Village
of Glencoe’s Sesquicentennial year,
it’s hard to imagine how any more excitement
and community pride could have
been packed into 12 short months. Festivities
orchestrated by the Sesquicentennial
Planning Committee, in partnership with
Glencoe’s many community organizations,
invited community members of all
ages and interests to partake in the Sesquicentennial
through education, celebration,
participation and appreciation.
From the celebration kick-off at Light
the Lights last November, to honoring
community members past and present at
the Glencoe 150 Hall of Fame Recognition
Dinner, to a musical all about Glencoe
written and produced by the creative
minds at Writers Theatre, to a bigger and
better Fourth of July, to a once-in-a-lifetime
chance to play nine-holes at each of
Glencoe’s three golf courses in one outing,
to the Glencoe 150 Gala at the worldclass
Chicago Botanic Garden — it has
been a momentous year.
Beyond these events, the community
was inspired to give back through District
35’s We Care for Our World Service
Day and the Glencoe Park District’s
Big-Hearted Bowls Project, while also
learning more about our history through
the Glencoe Historical Society’s panel
discussions, historical article series, Sesquicentennial
Exhibit and Open Doors
Glencoe. The Village is truly grateful for
the many volunteers and community organizations
that made such an inclusive,
creative celebration possible; thank you to
all those involved.
To round out a landmark year, the Sesquicentennial
Planning Committee and
Glencoe Chamber of Commerce invite
you to join us for one last hurrah: Light
the Lights from 4-7 p.m. Nov. 29.
Spend your evening in downtown Glencoe
welcoming the holiday season with
the Village’s annual tree lighting ceremony,
shopping specials, a Wine and Beer
Stroll, a visit from Santa and his reindeer,
trackless train rides and more.
The Village would like to thank BMO
Harris Bank and @properties for helping
to make these enhanced festivities possible
again this year! Pre-order your Wine and
Beer Stroll cups and learn more about the
event at www.glencoe150.org.
As the Sesquicentennial draws to a
close, the Sesquicentennial Planning
Committee hopes that you look back on
2019 with nothing but fond memories and
that you enter 2020 with a renewed sense
of pride in Our Town Glencoe!
Torino Ramen
introduces experimental
dishes to popular fare
The No. 1 ramen place
in the North Shore is lively
open and Torino just completed
its new expansion.
Torino Ramen is a Japanese
spot known for its variety
of savory hearty ramen
noodle bowls and other
classic Japanese gourmet
dishes. Torino Ramen is
proud to announce our expansion
of Bar Torino now
being open. The expansion
next door includes a much
larger seating area along
with a new full-service bar
including beer, wine, cocktails,
spirits and of course
sake! Come by after work
for a quick bowl of Ramen
and a fresh sip of beer.
We are also excited to
announce our Kaiseki Torino
Experiential Dinner
that several couples have
already enjoyed claiming,
“One of the best dining
experiences I have had in
over a year.” The goal with
our Kaiseki Torino dinner
is to allow our customers
to have full authentic Japanese
experience with a variety
of platters that would
take the traditional hallmarks
of Kaiseki for the
master Japanese progressive
dinner experience.
It’s truly a one of a kind
food experience. We hope
to have you join us for a
night of Kaiseki Torino,
the Japanese progressive
dining experience, featuring
a seasonally-inspired
menu prepared by Kaiseki
Master Chef Yuji Hayashi
and served in an intimate
candlelit setting.
Torino Ramen is genuinely
the best bowl of ramen
outside of Tokyo,
Japan. We hope to see as
many of you guys in the
near future! Come stay
warm with us during Ramen
Season! We are delighted
for you to check
out Torino Ramen, our
new Bar Torino, and our
Kaiseki Torino Events.
Torino Ramen opened in
early 2017 with three Japanese
natives who shared
the common goal. It was
created with one mission in
mind to create authentic and
hearty ramen for the Windy
City’s North Shore. At Torino,
we have always taken
pride in what we make as
it represents our childhood
and where we came from in
Japan. Ultimately bringing
the taste and feel of Japenese
culture over to the suburbs
of Chicago.
Torino is the brainchild
of Chikako and her partners,
Tomoko and Chika,
who fell in love with Japan
and its vibrant ramen
scene. Torino’s iconic flavorful
taste started with
recipes created in their
family kitchens and they
perfected the perfect noodle
bowl through a dozen
customizations of personal
tastes and preferences
keeping the traditions of
authentic food made with
love and integrity.
Guide to the gifts that keep on giving
in Wilmette, Kenilworth with Wilmette-onomics
Did you know that over $5
million dollars from local sales
are reinvested back into the
village every year? It goes to
That’s 5 million reasons to skip
online ordering and shop, eat
and explore locally this holiday
season. Wilmette business owners
have pride in our town and
provide expertise, personalized
Winnetka Music Festival returns in June
Mark your calendar for the 4th
annual Winnetka Music Festival
— June 19-20, 2020, Father’s
Day Weekend! Early-bird discounted
tickets are on sale for
Winnetka residents.
In just three years, The Winnetka
Music Festival, part of
the Valslist Live Event Series,
has established itself as one of
the country’s premier boutique
festivals on the summer music
circuit. Booking some of the
world’s top emerging artists
(many who have graced the stages
of Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo,
late night TV, and radio/film)
music curator Val Haller brings
a diverse lineup of genres across
two main stages, a family stage,
and an intimate chapel stage.
The Festival boasts an elevated
VIP experience, some of Chicago’s
top food trucks and popular
offerings from local restaurants.
For Winnetka residents only:
An exclusive earlybird ticket
sale price is being offered
through Jan. 15. Because Winnetka
hosts the fest in its streets
and parks, a 40 percent discount
for general admission tickets is
being offered to residents for
a limited time. (Fest ticket required
for entry. Under 21 free.
Limited quantity. Fest runs 5-11
p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday.
No Sunday. To buy your
tickets, now visit www.winnetkamusicfestival
— a great holiday/hostess
gift.
After Jan. 15, tickets will be
available to the public at standard
early bird rates.
Being able to say, “I saw them
when…” is the best takeaway
from the Winnetka Music Festival.
In recent years, attendees
have had front row access to
quickly rising artists like Spencer
Ludwig, currently featured
in national commercials for Target
& Royal Caribbean; Low
Cut Connie, top pick at Bonnaroo;
John Splithoff & The New
Respects, who rocked the stage
at Lollapalooza; Billy Strings,
named by Rolling Stone magazine
as one of the top bluegrass
artists not to miss; Alex Guthrie,
a Top 20 contender on Team John
Legend in the current season of
The Voice; and jazz savant Emmet
Cohen, awarded elite recognition
with the American Pianist
Award and Cole Porter Fellow.
The Winnetka Music Festival
is a great way to kick off
the summer and support the fest
which is primarily funded by private
donations and sponsors, in
addition to support from the Village
and Park District.
Your ticket purchase will also
allow the fest to continue its
philanthropic support of The All
Stars Project, a developmental
performance-based program for
inner city youth. Last year in
addition to making a contribution,
the festival showcased the
youngest All Stars performers,
hip-hop act Brothers on a Mission
on the Fields Family Stage.
And a bonus: The Winnetka
Music Festival is bridging the
fall/winter months with live concerts
in the Winnetka Chapel to
keep the music coming and expand
awareness of the festival.
North Shore Pizza Company opens
for business in Northfield Square
Everyone is really excited
to have pizza back
in Northfield.
So said North Shore
Pizza Company’s coowner
Doug Denenberg,
who operates the new
Northfield Eatery with
his brother, Todd, both of
Northbrook.
The new business occupies
the former Viccino’s
Pizza location at
300 Happ Road in Northfield
Square. The space is
familiar since the Denenberg
family is the founder
of Viccino’s: however,
they did not operate this
Northfield location.
“Everyone who has
been coming in has been
really excited to have
pizza back in Northfield,”
Doug previously
told 22nd Century Media.
“We are the only place
that is specifically pizza
(in Northfield).”
“The restaurant used to
concentrate on pizza and
sandwiches,” he added.
“Since then we’ve expanded
the kitchen and
we make all sorts of pastas;
all our sauces are
homemade.”
Todd personally said
there are so many options
now that his go-to-dish
depends on his mood.
Some of his favorites
include the thin crust
Windy City pizza, which
has Italian beef and your
choice of sweet peppers
or hot giardiniera peppers.
He also likes the
deep dish Venetian style
with spinach, sausage onion
and artichoke hearts.
Rose Hall continues mission to educate the whole child
Rose Hall Montessori School
has been educating young children
for over 30 years ago.
Based on the philosophy and
educational methods of Maria
Montessori, Rose Hall’s mission
is to educate the whole child
by providing a stimulating and
nurturing environment that allows
children to grow socially,
emotionally and intellectually.
The ultimate goal is to help children
reach their highest potential
and gain a lifelong enthusiasm
for learning. This holistic focus
is still at the heart of Rose Hall
Montessori School today.
At Rose Hall the priority is
to help each child become the
person that he/she is meant to
become; to develop a strong
sense of self and confidence.
The teachers and staff work hard
to provide a supportive, caring,
peaceful environment in which
young children feel safe to explore,
grow, learn and become
independent.
Academically, the classroom
is separated into 5 key curricular
areas – Practical Life, Sensorial,
Math, Language and Cultural.
The core Montessori principals
of order, coordination, concentration
and independence are priorities
throughout the classroom.
At Rose Hall they believe that
the development of these core
executive functioning skills will
assist in building lifelong learning
skills.
In addition to the 5 core areas
the curriculum is enhanced with
a variety of additional units including
botany, art, music, the
5 senses and more. Each unit is
taught with a hands-on approach
– even down to creating a large
art studio in the gym for Jackson
Pollack Day.
In addition to all of these rich
learning opportunities, French is
taught weekly, and yoga is offered
once a month. Every day
begins with student and teachers
greeting each other, followed
by work time and typically ends
with a fun line time with songs,
dancing and peace curriculum.
Gross motor play is an important
component of every day
as well.
While the school takes academic
rigor seriously, it recognizes
that there are other equally
important life skills that are
formed and cultivated in very
early childhood years such as
patience, humility, empathy and
compassion. A strong emphasis
is placed on Maria Montessori’s
passion for peace and community.
The teachers invest a lot of
group class time, called “Line
Time” or “Peace Circle”, in helping
the children address issues
of compassion, conflict, respect
and problem solving. Rose Hall
teachers believe that fostering
an environment of peace in the
classroom not only aids the children’s
academic success but also
enables them to begin the long
work of becoming responsible,
respectful and loving members
of our communities.
Rose Hall recognizes that
every child brings his/her own
unique personality and talents
and therefore, the teachers don’t
try to enact a one-size-fits-all
approach to their learning. The
teachers observe the children
intently so that they understand
how the children react, what motivates
them, what areas need to
focus on.
Rose Hall’s classrooms are a
place where your child can feel
at home, feel loved, and feel the
freedom to explore and grow.
Give the gift of camp with Harand Camp of the Theatre Arts
One, Three, and Six-
Week Overnight Camp
Options for Ages 7-18
The renowned Harand
Camp of the Theatre Arts,
located on the campus
of Carthage College in
Kenosha, presents another
summer of theater, fun
and friendship in 2020.
To register, or for more
information, contact 847-
864-1500, harandcamp@
gmail.com or visit www.
harandcamp.com.
Established in 1955, Harand
Camp was one of the
first residential camps to
combine musical theater
with the fun of traditional
camp life. Located on the
beautiful campus of Carthage
College in Kenosha,
Harand offers performing
arts training for campers
ages 7 to 18, plus sports,
activities, and camp fun
in a supportive, family environment.
Sessions run
one, three, or six weeks
and culminate with largescale
performances in a
400-seat, state-of-the-art
theater.
In preparation for
shows, campers take daily
classes in singing, dancing,
and acting with occasional
evening rehearsals.
Harand Camp adheres to
a non-competitive philosophy
where “no man is an
island” and EVERYONE
is a STAR. It is the goal
for everyone to develop
performance skills while
also building self-confidence.
Harand is a second
home to thousands of alums
worldwide who have
built lifelong friendships
and cherished memories.
During the first threeweek
session (June 21 –
July 12) campers perform
in a major musical revue
featuring the entire camp.
Each group stars in two
sections of non-stop singing
and dancing wearing
amazing costumes. During
the second three-week session
(July 13 – August 2)
each age group prepares
a full-length musical with
every camper performing a
lead role and in the ensemble
– ensuring everyone
has the chance to shine.
Campers may also attend
for six weeks (June
21 – August 2) or a unique
one-week session (June
21 – 27) exclusive to new
campers, ages 7-12. This
option is perfect for children
who have never been
away from home. Space in
the one-week program is
very limited.
In addition to the theatre
program, campers take
three electives per day.
Options include a variety
of sports, fitness, fine arts
and activity classes as well
as additional performing
arts and production electives.
Every evening features
an exciting schedule
of cabin nights, events,
all-camp games, concerts
and trips bowling, skating,
or to a local entertainment
park.
Campers also enjoy the
comfort of modern facilities,
residing in dorms
overlooking Lake Michigan.
Delicious meals are
served in a renovated dining
hall with an extensive
menu by Sodexo. Accommodations
can be made
for special dietary needs.
Other amenities include:
Olympic-size pool,
dance & fitness center,
on-campus security, nurse,
low camper/staff ratio, and
ACA Accreditation (Program
Excellence Award).
Harand Camp strives to
make the camp experience
affordable for all families
and offers a variety of discounts,
payment plans and
scholarships. Need-based
scholarships are awarded
through the Harand Camp
Scholarship Fund, a 501c3
YogaSix is coming to Plaza del Lago in December 2019
YogaSix is changing the way
people think and experience
yoga. We believe that everyone
deserves the mind-body experience
of yoga and YogaSix delivers
that experience by connecting
students to a practice that
is energizing, empowering and
fun! Our studio isn’t exclusive
or elitist but rather is a concept
truly meant for everyone. You
don’t have to be a yoga expert to
experience and enjoy YogaSix.
YogaSix delivers life-enhancing
benefits through six core
classes. Each class is exactly
what you make of it – from a
beginner to someone seeking a
recovery experience to more advanced
students.
Y6 101: EVERYONE STARTS
SOMEWHERE
Maybe you’re brand new to
yoga or looking for a way to
ease back into your practice.
These classes will develop your
strength, flexibility, comfort level
and stamina as you challenge
your body and mind.
Y6 Restore: CALLING ALL
ATHLETES, TOO MUCH TIME
AT THE DESK-ERS AND NEVER
QUITTERS
Whether you’re training for a
half-marathon, pushing weights,
or stuck behind a desk all day,
Y6 Restore is for you. These
classes emphasize floor postures
to stretch, open and release the
major muscle groups of the entire
body. Students who take this
class regularly report fewer injuries,
improved sleep and reduced
aches and pains.
Y6 Slow Flow: DIVE INTO
DEEPER FOCUS
These classes flow at a slowed
down pace so there’s time to
explore individual postures and
transitions. Students can build
confidence and familiarity, and
refine the fundamentals of alignment.
You will gently engage,
open and strengthen the body.
Y6 Hot: COME HYDRATED AND
READY TO SWEAT
Our heated practice room
will leave you feeling detoxed
and invigorated. The YogaSix
signature set sequence, Y6 Hot,
combines yoga postures synched
with your breath, a fun and challenging
balancing series, and dynamic
core work designed to add
energizing fire to your life. Y6
Hot will leave you feeling perfectly
balanced inside and out,
from bottom to top.
Y6 Power: FULL BODY BLAST
These classes are heated,
strength building, full-body
blasts designed to build focus,
endurance and flexibility. These
vinyasa classes move at a steady
pace to keep your practice fluid,
creative and energizing. Y6
Power facilitates breakthroughs
in body and mind, so count on
leaving with a sense of energy
and empowerment.
Y6 Sculpt & Flow: PERFECT
BLEND OF YOGA AND WEIGHT
TRAINING
A dynamic yoga warm-up
will get your heart-rate up and
muscles warm, before you dive
into an intense, cross training
workout that uses dumbbells,
bands and body weight exercises
to challenge muscular strength,
endurance and cardiovascular
thresholds. Then cool down with
some yoga stretches. The best of
both worlds – a total body workout
plus a killer yoga vibe. Expect
a fun playlist and high energy
music throughout.
We’re thrilled to be opening
in Plaza del Lago! Your mat is
waiting.
Schaefer’s Wines, Foods & Spirits has
been ‘setting the bar’ since 1936
A North Shore institution
as long as anybody
remembers, Schaefer’s
Wines & Spirits ages like
a treasure bottled of wine.
Located on its iconic Old
Orchard and Gross Point
Roads corner, Schaefer’s
is the first stop when it’s
time to party, celebrate or
commemorate.
Schaefer’s beverage
history dates back to the
John Schaefer tavern on
High Ridge in Wilmette
during to the late 1890s.
After prohibition, George
Schaefer operated the
Boundary Tavern at its
current location. Since
then, the store has garnered
a national reputation
for wines, foods &,
most importantly, unparalleled
service.
The store’s third generation
president, Anje
Schaefer Cluxton, comments:
“In an age of big
boxes, we stay true to
customer service excellence
combined with a
deep selection of wine,
beers and spirits. Our
celebrated food department,
with specialty delicacies,
artisan cheeses
and amazing homemade
soups, dips and spreads,
rounds out the offerings.”
For generations, holiday
parties officially begin
when the Schaefer’s
truck arrives in the driveway
with libations and
those stacked boxes of
glassware. Enjoy free delivery,
fully credited returns
and, yes, even free
loaner glassware! Every
budget, and palette, is accommodated.
It’s a stress
free holiday. “I’m here
for you, we will take care
of everything,” says Dan
Madden, Schaefer’s goto
party guy for over 30
years.
A holiday gift from
Schaefer’s, packed in
their signature boxes,
says it all. It brings a
smile to every recipient.
By phone, web or in
person, Schaefer’s veteran
team of experts is
peerless. Whether it’s a
professional gift list, or
a thirsty parent, they’re
ready for you. Need
something special? Select
a cellar wine and ask
about bottle engraving.
Relax with the experts!
They’re part of our local
history and “setting the
bar” in all respects since
1936.
Razny Jewelers creates beautiful pieces
with brilliant diamonds, precious metals
Forever is a long time
— until you’re in love.
Thereafter, hours pass like
seconds. A quick glance.
A knowing smile. Each
moment together is an opportunity
for an expression
of warm affection. Like
one single tile of a mosaic,
love turns eternity into
quick flashes forming the
beautiful whole of a new
forever.
For almost 70 years,
Razny Jewelers has listened
to the stories of
couples from all over Chicago
and beyond. Each is
unique and worth celebrating.
With these beautiful
bonds in mind, we were inspired
to create a selection
of engagement rings and
wedding bands reflecting
the everlasting brilliance
of true love.
It was essential to us
that, aside from being distinctive,
this exclusive collection
encompasses the
many styles and tastes of
today’s brides. We took
great care to guarantee
modern silhouettes shine
just as brilliantly as their
classic counterparts. The
most popular diamond
shapes and settings, with a
few outlier designs added
for variety, were all skillfully
formed by our inhouse
design team.
It is a collection we are
proud to call Forever by
Razny.
Forever by Razny is currently
on display at our
Highland Park boutique
in Chicagoland’s North
Shore neighborhood.
Ingrid Razny shines a
light on the inspiration behind
each design. “Beginning
their lives together, it
is important for a couple
to have a jeweler they can
trust. A new home, anniversaries,
and babies are
only a few of the many
milestones they’ll be celebrating
for generations to
come. Look to Forever by
Razny as a collection from
which to begin a beautiful
and happy friendship —
between our family and
yours. Here you’ll find
your forever-ring, from
your forever jeweler.”
No two love stories are
the same, and the most important
jewelry you own
should reflect your unique
story. Forever by Razny is
made with only the most
brilliant diamonds and
precious metals, honoring
love’s individuality.
What ‘5b2f ’ stands for
5b2f was inspired by
a bible story about a boy
with five loaves of bread
and two fish. A young boy
brought a lunch which has
five loaves of bread and
two fresh fish. The young
boy gave Jesus his lunch
with which Jesus transforms
the boy’s humble
offering of lunch into fantastic
feast enough to feed
5,000 people with 12 full
baskets of food leftover.
We are inspired to be
God’s tool. When we give
Jesus what we have (even
though it is so tiny), Jesus
feeds many people who
need help.
Romancing the hair at La Relance Salon
Just like our skin, our hair ages
as well. Product lines are booming
with sales for anti aging
beauty products. But what does
aging hair really mean?
Teens to Twenty’s
Hair is usually as healthy and
attractive in its natural state as it
will ever be. Even with coursetextured
hair its natural state,
after being tamed, will be shiny
and full. Some people may have
oily hair due to hormone changes
or a poor diet. Washing daily
with a balancing shampoo and
rinse for the ends will help keep
the skin calm. Dry it thoroughly
to the scalp after washing to
avoid skin rashes or itchiness at
the nape of the neck. A balanced
diet rich in Omega oils, calcium,
and protein play an important
role in healthy hair.
Thirty’s to Forty’s
Gray hairs that are thick and
wiry often first appear now.
Color is used to help smooth
and bring back a youthful shine
to the newly textured hair. Hair
may start to feel thinner due to
fewer active follicles and a decrease
in the diameter of the hair
shaft. Men may see this more at
this age. Men should use a deep
cleansing and stimulating natural
based shampoo to increase blood
flow to the scalp and follicle.
Women that know thinning hair
is genetically passed, should also
properly cleans and stimulate
there scalp to at least decrease
the chances of losing more hair
as they age. Many people choose
to start using Rogaine to help
stimulate new hair growth. This
works but once the product is not
used any new hair grown will be
lost due to the active ingredient
not being applied. To help support
your hair continue a balance
diet and take quality supplements
to provide vitamins and
antioxidants such as vitamins A,
C and E, zinc and biotin.
Fifty’s and Up
Hair will become more fragile
now. It is likely to break or suffer
from exposure to UV rays and
other stresses. Be cautious with
old styling tools. Blow dryers
and brushes need to be replaced
at least every couple of years. If
you are using a five-year-old hair
dryer, it may be over heating and
burning your hair as you dry it.
Brushes can have bent bristles
from being stuffed into cabinets
or drawers, this will shred your
hair as you are drying it and cannot
be repaired only cut off.
Overly highlighted hair will
break and permanent all over
hair color will fade from all of
the new gray hairs. Your colorist
will need to rebalance the
ends of your hair at least every
third color root touch up service
with a completely different color
formula to best treat the faded
hair needs. This is an additional
charge to your service but it is a
must for any aging hair to look
its best. Always use an integrity
shampoo and mask, a rinse
will usually not provide enough
moisture to the original lack luster
hair. Remember, just because
you have colored your hair does
not mean you have changed
what your natural hair is. It will
always be aging hair that needs
the most attention to become full
and shiny. Using triple threat
products will leave your hair in
a beautiful place creating thicker,
fuller, and shinier hair both
in look and feel. This is why
working with a hair stylist that
knows your hair is vital to finding
the proper products and tools
to get your best hair! It is not always
a sales pitch when stylists
are working with you to create
your best hair. I have years of
experience and knowledge readily
available to help you. At La
Relance I stand behind our products.
It’s not easy when there is an
over abundance of hair and skin
care products retailed everywhere.
Reviews will not work
because no one has the same hair
needs. So shopping on line is not
your best option. I suggest that
you schedule a blow dry with
your stylist. Have a consultation
about your hair needs and discuss
what you have in your cabinets
already. You may need to change
just one thing or maybe get rid
of it all, but talking through it is
the best option. Bring the products
and tools you have and use
to that scheduled appointment,
this will help you in so that you
are not guessing the names of the
many products you have stored
so carefully in your cabinets
throughout the consultation. You
will be surprised how learning
what to do with your products
can change everything!
Willow Creek North Shore seeks to make
global impact during holiday season
This holiday season,
Willow Creek North Shore
in Glenview invites you
to be part of a faith community
with a vision that
extends beyond Sunday
morning. Throughout December,
the church will
host gatherings designed
to serve the local community,
provide space for
families to connect, support
fair trade retailers in
developing countries, and
share the peace and hope
they find in their faith.
“We are a church that
believes that our faith
calls us to be merciful,
kind, and compassionate,
and to serve and love the
people around us,” Pastor
Amy Mikal said. “The
holiday season is the perfect
time of year for us to
serve our neighbors here
on the North Shore and to
make an impact across the
globe.”
The first holiday event,
a Family Christmas Party,
will be held 9 a.m.-noon
Saturday, Dec. 7. Families
are invited to enjoy
hot chocolate, treats, music,
games, and more during
the open-house style
event. Families will also
have an opportunity to
give back to the community,
assembling gift packages
for residents at Glen
Oaks Nursing Home in
Northbrook.
All are invited to pack
Christmas gifts for prisoners
at 9 and 11:15 a.m.
Sunday, Dec. 8, during
services. Everyone in attendance
will pack a gift
for inmates who otherwise
might not receive a gift or
even a word of encouragement
during the holiday
season. Kaleb Wilcox, Associate
Pastor at Willow
Creek North Shore, said
he hopes the simple gift
brings prisoners joy this
Christmas.
“Jesus taught us to remember
the prisoners and
to serve those often forgotten
by society,” Wilcox
said. “We want to let
prisoners know that there’s
a church in Glenview that
remembers them and that
there is a God who loves
them.”
The church is also hosting
a fair trade market on
the morning of Sunday,
12/15 with Ten Thousand
Villages – a fair trade retailer
of artisan-crafted
items including, jewelry,
more. Attendees can purchase
gifts while also
supporting artisans and
entrepreneurs who are developing
a sustainable income
their families.
To complete their December
lineup, Willow
as a community.
“In the middle of a full
feeling about faith today,
there is a place here for
you.”
How to stick to your workout schedule during the holidays
StatePoint media
There are plenty of temptations
to skip a workout during
the holiday season. Ironically,
this is the time of year you may
need the movement most.
Here’s how you can stay focused
on fitness throughout the
holly jolly season.
• Rise and Shine: Consider creating
the habit of working out
first thing in the morning. Not
only will doing so clear your
mind and set the tone for the
day, but for many, it’s the best
way to avoid excuses and ensure
the workout happens at
all.
• Every Bit Counts: Don’t forget
that every bit of movement
counts -- even holiday shopping.
This is an especially important
lesson if you’re not a
gym lover. In fact, one of the
best ways to stay healthy is
with walking. You can even
do it during your lunch break.
With just 30 minutes of brisk
walking added to your daily
routine, you could burn about
150 more calories a day, according
to the Mayo Clinic.
• Track It: Wearable tech can
help you stay accountable to
your goals as well as motivate
you to set new ones. Check out
the latest additions to the new
POWER TRAINER sports
lineup of watches from G-
SHOCK, which go beyond an
athletic aesthetic to offer advanced
functionality.
Features include a Training Log
200 LAP Memory, Training
Timer, Target Alarm and Double
Super Illuminator LED
light to guide you through
late-night and early morning
pre-dawn workouts. Both the
men and women’s series come
equipped with Bluetooth technology
compatible through the
G-SHOCK Connected app.
Employing new technology
developed by Casio, the app
displays a graph which breaks
down daily steps taken in each
of five metabolic equivalent
(MET) levels from data based
on the step count and walking
pace, as well as displays the
exact time of day the wearer’s
calories were burned, making
it useful for interval training.
• Friends and Family: Tis the season
to spend time with friends
and family, and there’s no
reason why you can’t extend
that mentality when it comes
to your fitness routine. Maximize
workouts by combining
it with quality time -- ask your
spouse, sibling, best friend or
anyone near and dear to your
heart to join you at the gym or
on a walk.
There’s a lot to juggle during
the busy holiday season, but with
the right tools and mindset, it’s
easier to prioritize fitness.

Holiday gatherings in your empty nest home
The North Shore is home to
a large number of long-time
resident couples approaching
the “empty nest” phase of their
lives. For them, downsizing to
one level living often means
resorting to an elevator condominium
building, which initially
seems like a great idea.
These buildings provide ease
of access, one level living and
virtually no maintenance involvement
outside of the unit
itself.
However, at holiday time,
even large condominiums are
rarely perfect for couples who
enjoy hosting family gatherings.
Rarely do these units offer
dedicated dining rooms large
enough for most families with
grandchildren; they are too
small to accommodate visiting
family members comfortably;
and, often lack quiet get-away
spaces for younger family
members to romp around in.
This means for many couples
one level living, especially
when downsizing, becomes a
big sacrifice when family entertaining
traditions are simply
too important to give up.
If you are in this group, the
good news is building is a great
option!
Building an affordable new
empty nest single-family low
maintenance home gives you
the ability to live in a wonderful
single-family house without
sacrificing one level living, or
a yard.
In a well-designed empty
nester house, you could easily
obtain very large dining rooms,
great outdoor dining/living
spaces, ample indoor entertainment
areas and, most importantly,
places for the visiting
families to have their own private
separate bedroom and living
areas—on the second floor,
of course.
Just as important, your new
empty nest house will be built
to suit your tastes and sensibilities,
not those of a high-rise
developer.
Done right, your new custom
designed home will comfortably
accommodate the lovely
antique, art and other fine decorative
objects that took you a
lifetime to acquire.
If family gatherings during
the holidays are an important
part of your family traditions,
consider building your own
empty nest home. You will love
it.
Ambiance Blinds and Shades showcases
holiday sale for a limited time in Wilmette
Rebates on select products
from Hunter Douglas available
and complimentary installation.
Greg and I are so excited to
work with the homeowners in
the North Shore. We began
our careers working in window
treatments over 20 years ago.
We have learned so much working
with various companies,
but always felt something was
missing. Greg and I decided that
we wanted the freedom to offer
more options to meet our client
needs and we remain passionate
about making a connection
and finding what works best for
your home. When we opened our
Chicago showroom in 2011, the
vendors were surprised that we
wanted to expand when other
companies were pulling back economically,
we saw a need that
we could fulfill. The products
that you put in your home are an
expression of you and we love
to get to know our clients with
a consultative process that brings
together ideas to find the blind,
shade, or custom drapery that
will be functional and beautiful.
We grew a successful business
which we expanded in March by
assuming ownership of a beautiful
showroom in downtown Wilmette.
We enhanced the brands
we offer to cover every option
based on your desired look and
budget. Window treatments protect
your privacy and can boost
energy efficiency. Our designers
help you understand all the options
available, prioritize quality
over quantity, precisely measure
and achieve correct proportions.
Footwear, outerwear and clothing
featured at Forest Bootery in Lake Forest
One of today’s oldest footwear
dynasties in the nation began at
the Forest Bootery in Lake Forest
Market Square and is celebrating
its 70th year. Second generation
owners, “the Girls,” Cristina
and Cara Garrison grew up in the
fashion footwear industry learning
at an early age from their parents.
After graduating college the
pair came home and found their
father was planning on selling
the store. Not wanting to let their
heritage go in 1996 they became
the fourth owners of the Forest
Bootery that was established in
1949.
“I remember going to New
York with our father when I was
around 13,” Cara Garrison said,
“and meeting some of the great
designers like Ralph Lauren,
Joan & David Helpern and I remember
Sam & Libby Edelman
when they were first launching
their line in the 1980s. We would
help pick out styles that we liked
and my dad would listen to us for
teen direction.” That was what it
was like for the girls growing
up in a family business. Cristina
remembers “when the store
had parties we had to be there to
serve refreshments.” Historically
every downtown across America
had a store that sold family
shoes and leather goods called a
“Bootery.” Fast forward, today,
the Forest Bootery’s assortment
is much more than just shoes for
the family. When the legendary
outerwear store, the Outdoorsman,
closed its doors they
acquired the brand The North
Face, in the past few years they
started carrying women’s ready
to wear. “It’s about having what
our customers need so they don’t
have to shop somewhere other
than their home downtown” says
Cristina “we are a local landmark
and a leader. We put in
clothing because the tenant mix
in the Square was missing this,
well, and it’s super fun to buy.”
What’s going to happen with
the Forest Bootery? Cara says
“We are just not sure with closed
store fronts on Market Square
and online footwear sales climbing,
it’s true, our Lake Forest location
has been struggling. Consumers
have evolved and don’t
always shop local before clicking
online, it’s just too easy. Its
hurting retail and I worry gone
will be the days of going out
shopping. Shop less in stores and
then stores will have to carry less
and so goes the cycle. We plan
on continuing our search of finding
that special niche online to
help preserve our brick and mortar
footprint.” The “Bootery” is
rich in heritage and its flagship
location is located in Historic
Market Square Lake Forest Illinois.
They have been serving the
communities of Lake Forest and
Lake Bluff for 70 years.
Local mom celebrates one year
as spa owner with amazing holiday gifts
After years of working
long hours while raising
young kids, Northbrook
resident Leslie Lee decided
she was ready for
a change. It was time for
more work life balance
and less stress. Well, what
could be less stressful than
a spa! She loved the idea of
providing a relaxing experience
as well as an affordable
way for people to take
better care of themselves.
So, she dove head first into
entrepreneurship, opening
Hand & Stone Massage
and Facial Spa in Northbrook
last December. It
hasn’t always been stress
free but the support of the
community and friends in
the area has made all the
difference. And to celebrate
the first year in business,
Hand & Stone is offering
a huge Buy One Get
One sale on gift cards this
Black Friday weekend!
After all, a growing trend
in holiday gift giving is
to create an “experience”
as a gift instead of giving
“stuff.” As we all strive to
reduce our physical footprint,
the well-intentioned
“stuff” we give others over
the holidays quickly adds
to the post-holiday clutter.
According to studies collected
by Joshua Becker,
THE expert on minimalism
and author of several
books on the topic:
The AVERAGE family
gives or throws away over
200 pounds of clothes per
year.
54 percent of adults in
the US report being overwhelmed
with clutter and
78 percent have no idea
how to overcome it!
But “stuff” makes our
gift recipients happy,
right? Wrong.
Beyond reducing clutter,
giving experiences is
also good for the recipient.
According to research
reported in the Journal of
Psychological Science by
Thomas Gilovich of Cornell
University, experiences
provide more lasting
happiness than material
possessions. He speculates
that, “This is because we
adapt to physical things, so
even the nicest car or newest
phone becomes commonplace
after enough
time, while memories tend
to get fonder over time.”
So, this holiday season,
consider an experience gift
for everyone on your list
like a gift card from Hand
& Stone Massage and Facial
Spa in Northbrook.
Let your loved ones enjoy
a day of pampering. It’s
healthy and feels great.
This Black Friday weekend,
6 chef-approved suggestions for a merry holiday season
StatePoint media
Heading into the holidays can
be both exciting and terrifying.
Part of the stress factor comes
from food and drink -- specifically,
what to serve guests,
bring to parties and how to stay
healthy and centered through the
thick of it.
To help take the worry out of
the season, Mark Estee, a nationally
recognized chef, is offering
helpful suggestions.
1. Heat. Chips and salsa, a staple
at many gatherings, don’t
have to be boring. Swap out
run-of-the-mill salsa with
something fresher and more
delicious. Estee’s brand of
choice is Killer Salsa, a delicious,
small-batch salsa made
in Nevada for over 20 years.
Flavors include Original, Salsa
Verde, Hot and Garlic, all
of which are made with simple,
clean ingredients that will
add some kick in your crunch.
To add wintertime flair, pour
the salsa over goat cheese or
cream cheese and warm it in
the oven.
2. Simple Bites. Whether you’re
party-hopping and need something
to contribute or you just
want to rock the appetizer
spread, keep things simple.
Grab a local baguette and pick
up Liberty Artisan Meats’ new
‘Nduja salami, a particularly
spicy, Calabrian chili salami
that goes great on crusty,
fresh bread or as a pizza topping.
Unlike typical salami,
it’s high-fat content and finer
grind make it spreadable.
3. Drink. The best way to roll
into a party is with a premade
cocktail in tow. This is because
barrel-aged cocktails can taste
@OSTEOSTRONGCHICAGO
A revolutionary wellness
system that works to build
stronger bone density and
ignite the entire musculoskeletal
chain naturally has
arrived in Chicago.
OsteoStrong of Greater
Chicago, with locations in
Wilmette and Schaumburg,
is part of OsteoStrong, a
rapidly growing national
franchise that helps people
of all ages and fitness levels
enhance their bone health,
balance, strength, and posture.
Created based on Dr.
John Jaquish’s osteogenic
loading research and other
studies, the OsteoStrong
system triggers the growth
of new bone and muscle
density in sessions that
only take a few minutes.
Since the first location
opening in 2012, Osteo-
Strong has grown into
more than 100 locations on
4 continents and benefited
more than 30,000 people.
Part of its fast success can
be attributed to the fact that
its system of four machines
(for lower body, upper
body, core and spine) emulates
high impact forces
without the risk of injury. A
session coach monitors the
entire process, and the integrated
computer software
provides instant biofeedback,
as well as tracks long
term progress.
About 54 million Americans,
half of all adults age
50 and older, are at risk of
breaking a bone and should
be concerned about bone
health, according to the National
Osteoporosis Foundation,
and more than 10
million Americans already
suffer from Osteoporosis.
Many people concerned
about their bone health
have found an effective
treatment in OsteoStrong.
“I’ve been going to OsteoStrong
for three months,
and I can feel my bones getting
stronger,” Peggy Jones
said. “I highly recommend
this place for people who
want to be proactive or who
have a need to strengthen
their bones.”
Studies show that a year
of treatment with Osteo-
Strong improves bone density
between the hip and
spine by 7.34 percent, and
in as little as six months, has
demonstrated an average
overall bone density gain
of 14 percent. In a study
of 500 clients, strength improved
by an average of 73
percent after the first year,
and 290 percent by the end
of four years.
OsteoStrong also
has positive benefits on
strength, stability, and joint
pain. Gus Gates writes “After
just a few sessions, I noticed
lifting a heavy shingle
suddenly became easy to
accomplish. But now, after
little more than four
months, my strength in the
four key areas is up over
40 percent, and my joint
pain is gone! This renewed
stability is absolutely wonderful.”
Gus is currently
exhibiting strength gains of
over 168 percent.
Improving your bone
density, balance, strength,
and overall health is possible
in only a few minutes
a week at OsteoStrong of
Greater Chicago. To learn
6 tips to celebrate within your means this holiday season
StatePoint media
For many families, the
holiday season is the most
expensive time of year.
Americans spent over
$707 billion dollars during
the 2018 holidays, according
to the National Retail
Federation, and it would
be no surprise for spending
to increase in 2019.
“It is important to ensure
you are spending
wisely and not turning the
new year into a time of
new debt,” says Michael
McAuliffe, president of
Family Credit Management,
a non-profit creditcounseling
agency.
To spend sensibly and
with good cheer this season,
consider these tips
from McAuliffe and the
experts at Family Credit
Management.
• Set a budget: While you
should be following a
budget throughout the
year, it’s important to
have a holiday-specific
budget too. Figure out
how much you are able
to spend on each person’s
gift and stick to
it. This will help you
consider those big-ticket
items more seriously
and make it possible for
you to stay on track.
• Decorate wisely: With a
tight budget, consider
using last year’s decorations
or making homemade
decorations, as a
fun, money-saving project
to do with the whole
family. While there’s no
real need to buy new,
expensive decorations
every year, if you are so
inclined, don’t forget to
include that in your holiday
budget.
• Think about shipping:
Online deals might look
great, and many times
they are. Other times,
they’re not really deals
at all because of shipping
costs. If you are going
to shop online, make
sure to keep an eye out
for free shipping days
offered by many retailers
and to factor in shipping,
when necessary,
into your overall spending
plan.
• Don’t shop because
you’re “supposed” to:
Just because it’s Black
Friday or Cyber Monday,
doesn’t mean you
have to shop. While
there are some good
deals offered during
these events, just as frequently,
the deals are not
super special once you
look at the normal price
and product reviews.
Unfortunately, marketing
teams are great at
knowing how to access
wallets through product
placement and signage,
and shopping during
these times will increase
impulse spending and
make it much harder to
stick to a holiday budget.
• Use apps to price check:
Technology is great!
There are many apps
out there to price-check
items while you’re shopping,
so you can make
sure you are getting the
best deal. Some retail
stores will even adjust
the price in-store when
you have found a better
deal online.
• Leave the credit cards at
home: Put your holiday
budget on a pre-paid
debit card or gift card
that you can use anywhere.
Going shopping
with only that card will
help ensure that you
don’t spend more than
your budgeted amount.
Not only will it help you
stay within budget, but it
will also help your purchase
stay interest-free.
