becauseitseemedsounrealthatIwasspeakingtohim.I<br />
hewas,thedrummerIhadlookeduptoformanyyears.He<br />
apologizedwhilelaughingthathedidn’thavehiscameraon<br />
straightawaybecausehehadjustwokenupanddidn’thave Berklee,soyoubeterbesure”.Johnknowingthatthiswas<br />
ashirton.Webegantalkingstraightawayasifwewereold<br />
schoolmatesthatweremerelycatchingup.<br />
HearingJohn’scareerstoriesfromthemanhimselfwastruly Johnbegantotelmeaboutthenextstepinhiscareer,which<br />
inspirational.Johnwasaseriousdrummerandmusicianand<br />
tualycaledme.Atfirst,hiscamerawasn’tonsoIwaswon-<br />
studyingatBerkleehereceivedacalfromLaryBlackmon<br />
deringtomyselfifthiswasactualytherealJohnBlackwel<br />
recognizedhisvoicebecauseIhadwatchedsomanyinterviewsandlesonsofhis.Heturnedhiscameraonandthere<br />

himtolevelup.Johnarguedwithhimandtoldhimhecould<br />
notleaveCameo.Laryeventualyaskedhimifhewould<br />
havetakenthegigwithPatifhedidn’thaveacommitment<br />
toCameo.Johntoldhimthathewoulddefinitelyhavetaken<br />
thegigwithoutadoubt.LaryfiredJohnonthespotandtold<br />
himthathecouldnowtakethegigwith<br />
himthathecouldnowtakethegigwithPatibecauseheno<br />
longerplaysforCameo.Nothavingagiganymore,Johnwas<br />
“forced”totakethegigwithPatiandfromthismoment<br />
John’scareerexploded.<br />
HewastelingmeaboutagiginNewYorkhewasplaying<br />
withPati.Whilehewasplayinghesaidthathecouldfeel<br />
eyesonhimthewholetime.Feelingveryuncomfortablehe<br />
turnedhisheadtothesideofthestageandhesawPrince<br />
staringathim.Johnlaughedwhiletelingmethathealmost<br />
freakedoutandhadtokeeptelinghimselftorelaxandnot<br />
overplay.ThiswasPrinceattheendofthedayandI<br />
don’tthinkanythingcouldprepareyouforthosetypeof<br />
eyesstaringyoudown.Themomenttheperformance<br />
endedPrincecamestraightuptoJohnandsaidthathe<br />
wouldlikehimtocomehaveajamathisstudiobutonly<br />
oncehistourwasoverbecausehewasn’toferinghima<br />
gig,butonlywantedtohaveacasualjam.Princeexplainedthatheo<br />
plainedthatheofereddrummersthesameopportunity<br />
inthepastandthesedrummerscanceledtheirtoursbecausetheythoughthewasoferingthemagigandwere<br />
highlydisappointedwhentheyfoundoutitwasjustajam<br />
sesionandthatwasit.TheyneversawPrinceagain.<br />
Johnobviouslytookadvantageofthisoncehistourwas<br />
overandflewovertoPrince'sstudio.HemetPrinceinthe<br />
studioandtheybegantojamfreely.Acouplehourswent<br />
byandPrinceputhisbasdownandsaid“Okthanksfor<br />
coming,that’sit”.Johnsaidthathewasshockedand<br />
thoughttohimselfthattherewasnowaythatitwasgoing<br />
toendlikethis.Johnplayedmethegroovefromhislaptop<br />
thatactual<br />
thatactualygothimthegigwithPrince.Thisgroovewas<br />
programmedandinPrince'smind,nohumandrummer<br />
couldplaythisgroovebutJohnhadpracticeditandhadit<br />
down.AsPrincewaswalkingoutthestudio,Johnbegan<br />
playingthisgrooveandhesaidPrinceimmediately
stoppedinhistracks,turnedaroundlookingatJohn<br />
amazed,wentbacktohisbasandtheycariedonjamming<br />
forafewmorehoursandthenextthingJohnsaidheknew<br />
wasthathewasonaplanetouringtheworldwithPrince.<br />
Johnhadanamazingcareerandwassucharespected<br />
drummerinthedrummingcommunity.Itwasrealysadwhen<br />
IheardJohngotcancerandwespokealitleoveremail<br />
aroundthattimebutthingsdidn’tseemtooseriousandJohn<br />
asuredmethathewasalgood.Johnputupastrongfight,<br />
butsadlypasedawayonJuly4,<strong>2017</strong>,exactlyoneyearlater<br />
afterthediscoveryofhisbraintumors.Thiswasamajor<br />
shocktotheworldwidedrumcommunityandyoucould<br />
clearlyseehowrespectedandlovedJohnwasaloverthe<br />

friendin2007.Iwastoldthatit'sagreat<br />
waytogetyourfaceoutthereandIran<br />
withitbecauseIwasalreadyactivelygiggingandwantedtogrowmyfolowingsoI<br />
startedafanpage&surprisinglyalotof<br />
peoplefoundmeandstartedfolowingme<br />
asFBgotmorepopular.LaterIchosethe<br />
nameJstaranditstuck.
