SilverTape – Transparent

SilverTape® 5304, 5305, 5308, 5310, 5315, 5320, 5321 and 5325

Are double sided high performance acrylic based adhesive tapes, which are especially designed for the bonding of

high and medium energy surfaces as well as glass and various transparent plastics where a highly transparent bond

is required and no stress corrosion may occur. Due to their conformability they are capable of bonding a variety of

different thin and structured materials full surface and tension free. The tapes are capable of absorbing the differing

thermal expansions of the two different materials. Important is to avoid stress and tension on the bond during

application. This 53-series maintain high impact resistance even at temperatures below 0 °Celsius. More advantages:

vibration dampening, very good sealing properties, very good resistance to weathering, aging, yellowing (UV

influence), chemicals, plasticizers, resulting in excellent long term stability.

SilverTape – Plastics

SilverTape® 5332 and 5352

These products are double sided acrylic based adhesive tapes, which are especially designed to bond a wide variety

of plastic substrates. The surface tension of these materials may require further developed products than our

general purpose series. Where our coating 40 can be used in some cases of plastic applications, the coating 50 has

been developed for applications where a better bond to plastics is needed and the use of primer is not desirable.

These tapes are capable of absorbing the differing thermal expansions of the two different materials which in

plastics can be extremely high. These types maintain high impact resistance even at temperatures below 0˚Celsius.

SilverTape – Transfer Tapes

SilverTape® 8302, 8304, 8402, 8404, 8502 and 8504

These thin tapes are designed to adhere to various surfaces. The thin adhesive film allows a good adhesive

performance on a variety of molded parts. These AFT Types have excellent UV, aging, solvent and high temperature

resistance. These series are in many situations virtually invisible and allow the usage of light weight, thin and small

materials in many shapes and sizes. For difficult to bond surfaces, as being used in today’s modern electronic

assembly industry, we refer to SilverTape® AFT 8402 or AFT 8404. In situations where the bond needs to be invisible

we recommend to use SilverTape® AFT 8502 and AFT 8504.

SilverTape – Pre-Powdercoating

SilverTape® Industrial 6004, 6008 and 6011

The 60-series are high performance double sided adhesive tapes with the highest inner strength, good shear and

good peel properties. The tapes are capable of absorbing the differing thermal expansions of the two different

materials. One should avoid shear stress on both substrates during bonding. Due to their conformability they are

capable of bonding a variety of different thin and structured materials full surface and tension free. Furthermore

these AFT tapes find wide use in applications like reinforcement of profiles on aluminum facades and road signs. In

combination with a primer this AFT tape family guarantees excellent adhesion performance. However, when using a

primer, the tape is no longer suitable to the powdercoating process. Where the tapes have an excellent temperature

resistance, the primer don’t have this quality with a result of a burned primer and a low adhesion. For low surface

energy applications we recommend our Low Surface Energy (LSE) tapes, the AFT 6404, AFT 6406, AFT 6408, AFT

6411 and the 6415.

SilverTape – Low Temperature

SilverTape® 5343, 5351 and 5353

These double sided acrylic based adhesive tapes are especially designed for the bonding of high and medium energy

substrates in low temperature ranges. The adhesive coating 41 ensures an excellent initial tack and end strength at

temperatures as low as 0° Celsius (32° Fahrenheit). These products are capable of absorbing the differing thermal

expansions of the two different materials and maintains high impact resistance even at temperatures below 0°

Celsius. This SilverTape series has a very high initial tack due to AFTC’s coating 41 and has a very good plasticizer

resistance. In many cases, the minimum bonding temperature of 15°C cannot be reached. In these, mainly exterior,

applications, this SilverTape Series offer an excellent solution.

SilverTape – Removable

SilverTape® 5106, 5108 and 5115

These SiverTapes are removable double sided acrylic based adhesive tapes, designed for a wide variety of materials

with high and medium surface. They are capable of absorbing the differing thermal expansions of the two different

materials but are, due to their high density, removable from their substrates without leaving a trace. This ability to be

removed of course means the peel adhesion of these products is relatively low compared to our other products. However,

these products ensure a high sheer and T-block strength. Besides their adhesive values, these tape offer aesthetic

advantages due to their transparency. These SilverTapes are widely used in the building and construction of, mostly

temporary, fair pavilions and stands where clean removability and re-using the materials is paramount.

SilverTape – Heat Activated 73-Series

SilverTape® HA7304, HA7308, and HA7312

These SilverTape products are constructed of two different adhesive systems. One side consists of a hotmelt

adhesive that is inactive at ambient temperatures. In application to extruded EPDM or TP seals, this adhesive is

activated by a heat source. This activated adhesive than melts together with the extruded rubber seal forming a very

strong and permanent bond.

The other side of the heat activated tape consists of a pressure sensitive adhesive. Here you will typically find the

same adhesive system as the ones used in our Automotive SilverTape range. Depending on the substrate AFTC offers

the following heat activated SilverTapes;

Cleaner and Primers

AFTC Cleaner and Primers

To achieve the perfect bond, surface preparation is

a must. The AFTC SilverClean and Primers 33 and

101 will help you to reach this by offering excellent

cleaning and priming characteristics.

AFTC Primers 33 & 101

AFTC Primers are designed to work in conjunction

with acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive systems.

When used correctly, adhesion promoters become

a thin film on the surface of the material on which it

is applied. The film anchors itself onto the material

surface. The surface energy of this film is typically

higher than the material to which the adhesion

promoter is applied. The higher the surface energy

level, the better the bond of the pressure sensitive

adhesive. The adhesion promoters are compatible

with AFTC Group SilverTape acrylic foam tapes.

AFTC SilverClean

The AFTC SilverClean is an isopropanol/alcohol

mixture (IPA). This cleaner has excellent degreasing

capabilities and is, due to its volatile nature,

extremely suitable for time critical applications

which many of our, and our customers’, applications

are. The AFTC SilverClean is suitable for light to

medium contaminated materials. Grease, dust, oils

etc. are easily removed by this cleaner.

In case of high contamination levels, AFTC advises

a more aggressive cleaner like MEK, Heptan or

Aceton.

AFTC offers two different primers; the 33 and the

101. Although both primers cover a lot of the same

materials, we see slightly better performance of

the 33 in combination with powder coated metals,

whereas the 101 shows a better performance on

a wide variety of polymers (plastics). To determine

which primer is suitable for your application, please

contact your AFTC Technical Sales Engineer.

27

Equipment

To offer our customers complete system solutions, AFTC has partnered with several manufacturers of application

equipment. Depending on their needs, wishes and price range, AFTC is able to offer suitable custom made solutions for

any inquiry. These solutions differ from simple cutters and pressers,

to extensive, fully automated, in-line applicators that apply thousands of meters of tape everyday with hardly any human

interaction. Please contact your AFTC Technical Sales Representative for any inquiry.

Our partners are able to manufacture any kind of tape applicator, laminator and presser. An example is shown on the

drawing/picture above. This hand laminator can also be fitted onto a fixture for in-line tape application and can be adjusted

for the use of slit or spool rolls. Besides these applicators any kind of custom made equipment is available at our customers’

request.

Applications - Automotive

Automotive

The AFTC SilverTapes are widely used in the modern day automotive industry. In applications that, ten years ago,

were dominantly bonded by traditional bonding methods like rivets, screws, clips or welding, nowadays 90% of these

applications have been substituted by adhesives and in particular acrylic foam tapes due to their specific characteristics.

30

Heat activated Silvertapes

Besides the applications where AFTC pressure

sensitive SilverTapes are used, AFTC’s heat activated

SilverTapes are used for the bonding of soft EPDM

weather seals all around the car. The heat activated

tapes consist of a pressure sensitive SilverTape on

one side and a hot melt on the other. This hot melt is

laminated onto the freshly extruded rubber seal and

therefore offers a very strong bond to this, otherwise

sheer impossible to bond, material.

Materials

Typically in automotive the bond is plastic to painted

metal. The type of plastic used for the manufacturing

of the parts, in combination with the clearcoat finish

of the car, require a certain type of adhesive system.

The thickness of the chosen adhesive depends,

besides on the materials, on the length of the bond,

the design and the stress levels endured by the parts.

Surface preparation

The surface tension of the materials sometimes

requires a surface preparation in the form of plasma,

corona or liquid primer. More information on

available primers can be found on pages 27 and 45.

31

Applications

All this results in the general capability of the AFTC

SilverTapes to bond all applications on the car; door

trims, body side mouldings, roof trims, roof ditch

mouldings, emblems, shark fin antennas, spoilers,

treat plates, weather seals etc.

Dimensions

AFTC offers its automotive SilverTapes in any shape

or form. For low volume trim applications we offer

slit rolls in the desired width with lengths of 33 or 66

meters. For high volume (automated) trimapplications

we offer spool rolls with lengths up to 1500 meters,

depending on the type of adhesive, width and

thickness of the required SilverTape. Besides available

roll dimensions, we offer a wide variety of custom

designed die-cuts. In close cooperation with our

converters, any required form or shape can be offered

to answer our customers’ needs. More information

about our converting capabilities can be found on

page 47.

Applications - Building & Construction

Structural Glazing

Since the mid 90’s adhesive systems have been used

in structural glazing. Applications that, to that point,

were dominated by mechanical fixtures, were now

more and more bonded. Besides the obvious aesthetic

advantage, the use of adhesives offers many more

advantages over traditional bonding methods in structural

glazing. In traditional glazing facades, the fixtures

were put through the glass. This meant holes had to

be drilled through the glass with several disadvantages

as a result. Besides the obvious risk of breaking

the glass, the integrity of the glass façade was compromised

due to the ‘damaging’ of the glass and the

glass panels possibly lost their water resistance due to

dried out rubbers around the fixture area.

At that point there basically were two adhesive

systems to choose from; silicones and acrylic foam

tapes. Both these systems had and have the same

advantages over mechanical fixtures, however, differ

from one another in many ways.

33

Silicones or acrylic foam tapes?

Both adhesive systems offer flexibility and therefor

strength of the bond in situations where wind load or

even earthquakes tend to put a certain stress on the

bond.

Compared to silicones however, acrylic foam tapes

offer several advantages. Besides aesthetic advantages

of the narrow and straight bond line of an acrylic foam

tape, these products offer significant cost reductions.

These reductions are the result of an increase in

productivity when utilising an acrylic foam tape for

your structural glazing applications. Especially the

AFTC Structural Glazing SilverTapes show excellent

results; the production speed increases, there are no

drying times, less debris, no necessary spacers and an

overall improvement in productivity.

Products: SGG, SGW, SGB

34

Warranty applications

Structural Glazing applications are typically high

profile buildings and structures. Because of this, and

the obvious risks involved, AFTC’s customers can apply

for warranties on their applications. If a warranty is

issued highly depends on the project, the location and

the approval of the AFTC Head office. To obtain these

warranties, the customer will need to follow the steps

as shown in the Warranty Business Map;

When all steps are fulfilled and the required

paperwork has been arranged, AFTC will grant

a written warranty on the application. For more

information concerning warranties in structural

glazing, please contact your AFTC Representative.

Facade building

The difference between structural glazing and façade

panels is the material the panel is made of. Where

in structural glazing the panel obviously is made of

glass, in facades, the panel can be made of different

materials. In most cases an aluminium composite or

sandwich panel is used but wood or plastic can also

be used in the manufacturing of these panels. The

requirements concerning warranty are the same as

for Structural Glazing applications

Partitioning & doors

In modern day architecture and project development,

office buildings are completed without an actual floor

plan. Except for units like kitchens and toilets, hardly

any interior walls are built to offer the eventual buyer

or tenant maximum flexibility when it comes down to

the final design of the office floor.

Elevators

The AFTC SilverTapes are used by some of the world’s

leading elevator manufacturers for the bonding of the

interior of the elevator carts. The constant moving of

the elevator puts stresses on the bond lines. These

bonds were typically done by rivets or screws. The

constant stresses resulted in loosened rivet and screw

holes which led to rattling noises in the elevators.

Offices, conference rooms and other designated

areas are separated using partitioning walls. These

walls typically consist of a glass panel bonded to an

(painted) aluminium or steel frame. The application is

very similar to the Structural Glazing applications as

mentioned above but because of the interior use, the

risks and stresses on these bonds are significantly less.

The principles of door production are basically the

same; a panel (composite, wood, plastic etc,) is

bonded to a steel or aluminium frame.

With the use of AFTC SilverTape, these noises are

minimised or eliminated altogether. Besides this,

you can imagine the aesthetics are very important

to these manufacturers as well. Applications in this

industry are floor, wall and ceiling panels as well as

the lighting and instrument panels.

36

Applications - Transportation

AFTC SilverTapes are widely used in several areas

of transportation. Trains, trams, busses, airplanes,

mobile homes, caravans, subway carts, trailers

are many of the applications we gather under the

umbrella “transportation”. Because of the diversity

of material and applications within transportation,

AFTC offers their full range of industrial tapes to their

customers.

Trailer building

In the applications of trailers, AFTC SilverTapes are

used for the bonding of roof-, wall- and floor panels as

well as corner profiles, lighting and reflective plating

for the exterior of the trailer. In many cases AFTC

customers have decided to switch from rivets and

screws to AFTC SilverTape. This switch has significantly

improved the speed of their production process and

with that their production costs. Besides this obvious

aesthetic and cost advantage, AFTC SilverTape has

reduced the sound of the vibrating trailer by 40-50%.

37

Different models of caravans and mobile homes, in

many cases, have the same pre-fab interior or exterior

parts. These parts such as full shower or bathroom

units, in the past were mainly riveted or glued into

the interior. Due to the friction of these vehicles, the

rivets would loosen, resulting in vibrating sounds. The

application using liquid glues obviously required long

drying times. Both these bonding methods can be

replaced using our AFTC SilverTape. Other applications

in this area of the market are exterior trims, lighting

and windows.

In the manufacturing of busses liquid adhesives

have always had a prominent role. Due to uneven

surfaces, welds and high torque this is still the

preferred bonding method. However, the quest for

improvement of productivity and cost reduction

has opened the door for AFTC SilverTape as well.

Together with the engineering teams of several

leading bus manufacturers AFTC has found some very

interesting applications. The hatches for the luggage

compartment being an interesting example AFTC

SilverTape is now used to bond the aluminium sheet

to the steel frame of the hatch. Besides the obvious

holding power and increase in production speed, this

brings another advantage; the AFTC SilverTape forms

a barrier between the two metals preventing bi-metal

corrosion.

Other SilverTape applications in the manufacturing of

busses are logo, emblem, exterior trim, floor- & roof

panels and lighting.

38

Applications - Home appliances

Housing

The housing of washing machines etc. nowadays

is typically powder coated. This very strong finish

exposes some challenges concerning the bonding.

Powder coatings have a low surface tension and

are therefore challenging to bond to. The challenge

that has two solutions; bonding before the powder

coating process using the AFTC SilverTape 60-Series or

bonding after the process using the AFTC SilverTape

64-Series. These SilverTapes have been especially

formulated for these purposes and offer great

adhesive values for all applications.

The applications in the white goods industry can

divided into two general areas; assembly of the

housing and attachment of exterior parts.

Instrument panels

Exterior parts for ovens, microwaves, refrigerators,

dishwashers, washing machines and dryers typically

require AFTC SilverTape die-cuts. All AFTC products

are offered as die-cuts in any shape or size. For more

information about converting solution please see

page 47 or contact your AFTC Representative.

39

Applications - Signing

Road- & commercial signs

The two major areas for AFTC SilverTape in this market

are without a doubt road signs and commercial signs.

Road signs are in most cases made of an aluminium

sheet or sandwich panel bonded to a steel frame.

In the past, rivets were used to attach the panels

to the frames. Because of the two different metals

being used and the rivets being pressed through

the materials, bi-metal corrosion was very common.

Using AFTC SilverTape offers an excellent solution for

this by forming a barrier between the frame and the

sheet. Besides this, other advantages are an increase

in productivity and obvious aesthetic improvements

compared to the many visible rivets in the past.

Commercial

Commercial signs on the other hand have more

aesthetic value and are in many cases made of

translucent materials such as polycarbonate, PMMA

or polyester. The combination of bonding to these

materials and the demands of the customers

concerning the (in)visibility of the tape has been

a challenge. AFTC’s transparent SilverTapes have

proven to be an excellent solution. These optically

clear tapes are relatively soft and therefore extremely

conformable to ensure a good adhesion to the above

mentioned polymers.

40

Applications - Electronics

Tablets, smartphones, desktops, televisions and

laptops are getting smaller and thinner with every

new release. The screens of these devices however

need a strong bond but because of restrictions

in dimensions this bonding power needs to be

achieved by a relatively small adhesive surface.

AFTC SilverTapes used in electronics are the thinnest

products in the spectrum. Thickness as thin as

0,15mm are very common in this industry and ensure

excellent adhesive values.

LED lighting has skyrocketed the past years. LED strips

or singles LED lights are being manufactured by the

millions. The LED strips, used for example in aircraft

to show the direction to the nearest exit, are bonded

with the AFTC transparent SilverTapes that is applied

at the LED manufacturer. Because of the high volume

AFTC supplies their transparent tapes on spool rolls as

well as slit- and logrolls.

For the adhesion of single LED’s our converters can

offer die-cuts in any shape or size required by the

customer.

Besides the screen several other, smaller applications

can be found in many of these devices. The mounting

of charging sockets, cameras, motherboards etc. are

some of the applications to think of.

41

Applications - Solar panels

Solar panels

AFTC SilverTapes are highly suitable for the

construction and placement of solar panels. The panel

itself offers many applications as well as the mounting

of the panels to frames, walls or rooftops.

Electric parts

Electrical parts like junction boxes are bonded to the

back of the panel in most cases using a die-cut of AFTC

SilverTape.

A solar panel in most cases is constructed of two glass

plates in between which the actual solar cells are

placed. Using AFTC SilverTape in the same thickness as

the cells, protects the cells and the water resistance

of the AFTC SilverTape ensures a 100% waterproof

construction. For aesthetic reasons these glass to glass

bonds are done with AFTC’s transparent SilverTapes.

The panels are then bonded to an aluminium frame

using the AFTC general purpose SilverTapes.

To keep from corroding, the glass/aluminium panels is

then bonded to the steel frames in a field, on a wall or

rooftop using the AFTC SilverTape.

42

APPLICATION

INSTRUCTIONS

43

Application instructions

Cleaning

To clean your light and medium contaminated

substrates, AFTC offers the AFTC SilverClean. Any

isopropanol/alcohol solution (IPA) is also acceptable.

When cleaning your substrate, a tear free, light

colored paper towel is required. Wipe the substrate

in one direction using the one cloth method (one

cloth with cleaner) or a two cloth method (one cloth

with cleaner and one dry cloth to follow) is acceptable

if you are short on time. Repeat these steps until

your cloth is clean and free of any contaminants. For

heavily contaminated substrates, use a cleaning agent

such as MEK, Heptan or Acetone. These cleaning

agents may leave a residue. which would have to be

removed using the IPA cleaner.

Or, if you are short on time, use the two cloth

method; one light colored paper towel drenched in

cleaner, followed by one dry light coloured paper

towel.

You can clean your substrates using the one cloth

method; one light colored paper towel drenched in

cleaner.

Abrading

When bonding to raw aluminum, abrading of the

surface is a must. The oils used in the waltzing of the

aluminum are pressed into the pores of the material.

To remove these oils, that will influence the bond, we

recommend using the AFTC SilverPads. These abrasive

pads ensure the proper level of abrasion without

damaging your substrates. Besides raw aluminum,

abrading is a method utilized to help improve your

bond. After the abrasion process is completed,

remove any residue using an IPA cleaner following the

methods mentioned above.

44

Primer

The use of a primer is recommended when bonding

to some low surface energy substrates. Examples

include, different types of polymers, powder coated

metals, or porous materials such as wood, cork, stone

or concrete.

Tape application

After the Primer is completely dry, the AFTC Silvertape

can be applied on the substrate. Position the AFTC

SilverTape on the material and apply light pressure by

pushing the thumb over the liner. Make sure that the

air between the tape and material is removed.

Primers are also used to help speed up your

production process. The AFTC SilverTape line can take

up to 72 hours to reach its end-strength. The use of

a primer ensures the end-strength will be achieved

within 20 minutes.

AFTC offers two primers; the primer 33 and the

primer 101. Determining which one of these primers

is suitable for your application ultimately depends on

the substrates and environmental influences. Your

AFTC technical support will gladly advise you which

primer to use.

45

Pressure

AFTC SilverTapes are pressure sensitive adhesives.

Therefore, a minimum amount of pressure is required

on the bond line to ensure the maximum adhesion to

your substrates. This pressure should be applied in a

rolling fashion. A hand roller or mechanical presser

are the preferred methods. The pressure on the bond

line must be a minimum of at least 10N/cm².

Liner removal

To remove the liners from the AFTC SilverTapes we

recommend the use of either a knife, scissors or a file

brush.

46

SHAPES AND SIZES

47

Shapes and sizes

Because AFTC continues to expand, customers from

around the world are requesting AFTC’s SilverTapes

by name to fulfil their acrylic foam tape requirements.

There are so many diverse applications that require

special shapes and unusual sizes, that AFTC sales

departments have become inundated with RFQ’s

(Request For Quote). AFTC’s solution is to utilize our

strong and reliable converter network in order to offer

our customers the speed and flexibility they have

become accustomed to from AFTC.

Log roll

A jumbo roll normally will provide up to 10 log

rolls. The log roll format is the most widely used

configuration by our converters and distributors.

Because our converters have extensive converting

capabilities, they are able to process AFTC SilverTape

to virtually any size required. The standard widths

range from 500mm or 900mm, however, some widths

will vary depending on the type of product and the

total thickness. The standard lengths are normally

16,5mtr or 33mtr. The general rule of thumb is,

any tape that has a thickness 1.6mm or greater, the

standard length is 16,5 mtr. Any product that is under

1,6mm, the standard length is 33 meters. 66 mtr’s or

longer is available upon request.

Jumbo roll

Products are produced as jumbo rolls. A Jumbo roll

is a large roll where the overall size can vary from

500mm x 165mtr to 900mm x 330mtr. The ultimate

width and length will depend on the type of product

and most importantly, the total thickness of the

product. Jumbo rolls are mostly used in high volume

die-cut applications.

48

Slit roll

AFTC Distributors and Converters, cut the logrolls

into the desired width of slit roll before sending it to

the end-user. Slit rolls can be produced in virtually

any width, ranging from 4mm up to 300 mm in

width. Some applications require very precise width,

whereas other applications will need wider tapes

whereby the tolerances are not as stringent. Choosing

proper width is based on a variety of factors, like

the bonding strength required, the size of the part

but also on other factors like the width of the profile

which must be bonded and the type of substrates.

either similar or dissimilar materials for a specific

application. AFTC works in collaboration with several

converters who are specialized in mass production

of die cuts. These die-cuts from the AFTC SilverTapes

are used in applications in white goods, automotive

sensors, automotive spoilers, tablets, mobile phones

and many other applications.

Liner

Liners play a very important role for the processing

of acrylic foam tape. Many customers will require a

Spool roll

AFTC is also able to offer our customers yet another

processing option for our SilverTapes, spool rolls.

Mainly used in the automotive industry, a spool roll

is constructed using a traverse winding system to

produce one large reel or roll. AFTC can provide spool

rolls from 4mm to 25mm with a continuous operating

length of 700 mtr to 1200 mtr with limited splices.

The maximum length of a spool roll is dependent

on the total thickness and width of the tape used.

Because of the long and continuous lengths compared

to a “pancake roll” there is less variability due to less

change over. The net result is that you can run longer

and faster improving your profitability.

Die-cut

AFTC’s end users typically use die cuts. A die-cut is a

specific shape or size of our tape and is used to bond

paper liner instead of the standard non – siliconized

130 µm red PE Liner. AFTC does offer the option of

a paper liner for all of our products. The 130 µm red

PE liner is the standard. A siliconized version of our

130 µm red PE film is available, however, it is used

primarily on our LSE series (64 and 96 series) due

to the very aggressive nature of the LSE adhesive

system.

Pull tab

AFTC can also offer our customers the option of a

pull tab. A pull tab is a small piece affixed to the edge

of the die cut piece in order to aid in the removal of

the liner. Several automotive customers utilize AFTC

pull tabs to help improve speed and efficiency during

production. AFTC offers three different kind of pull

tabs. The selection of the proper pull tab is dependent

from the type of product and liner being used as well

as the required adhesive and release values. AFTC

recommends using the ET9394 with our AM93 and

AM94 series tapes and ET9698 for our AM96 and

AM98 series tape.

Besides these two plastic pulltabs, AFTC offers a

variety of heat bond pulltabs. These aluminum

pulltabs are bonded to the liner by a heat source and

ensure an extremely high adhesion to the liner.
