INTRODUCTION

BOOKS AND STORYTELLING have always been an essential

part of childhood and reading has never been considered to be

outdated or old-fashioned, not even in the hectic digital world

of the 21st century. How is this possible?

STORIES PLAY MANY ROLES throughout our lives: they remind

us of the past, transmit values and cultural heritage, teach

lessons, entertain or simply ease our minds. Therefore, they

strongly influence our personalities as well enabling personal

improvement such as psychological, affective, cognitive and

social development.

Concerning LANGUAGE LEARNING, storytelling and reading

have always provided authentic contexts for the acquisition

and study of linguistic features in our mother tongue just as

much as in the case of foreign languages. Besides vocabulary,

grammar and stylistic features, stories and literature enhance

the development of comprehension as well as reading skills.

In the frame of English as a Second or Foreign Language

(ESL), EXTENSIVE READING has been proven to be beneficial

to learners not only for the purposes of language learning

but also to foster intrinsic motivation. On the other hand,

CONTENT AND LANGUAGE INTEGRATED LEARNING (CLIL)

might appeal to learners interested in certain topics, as factual

knowledge can be acquired while applying linguistic skills.

2

THIS IS WHAT BOOKR CLASS IS TRYING TO COMBINE

IN THEIR INTERACTIVE E-BOOKS.

For us, “e” not only stands for “electronic” but also for

educational, efficient and engaging. Our books provide pieces

of literature in the form of nurseries, songs, poems, in addition

to a wide variety of tales, myths and fables on top of classical

literature. In terms of the presentation of the everyday use of

English, we have included conversations, dialogues as well as

situations, what is more, to teach about culture and the world

in general, we have added books concerning different subject

matters, e.g. science, the world of work and history.

BOOKR Class is, therefore, an application of edutainment which

offers a wide range of books that suit every taste and might

please language learners with different preferences and needs.

The texts and activities are designed to support different learning

styles, moreover, the illustrations and games help to highlight the

main linguistic elements and features for more focused, intentional

learning. Thus, the app is suitable for schools as complementary

material but it is great fun beyond the classic learning

environment, whilst travelling or on cozy Sunday afternoons.

THE FOLLOWING UNIQUE COMBINATION OF FEATURES CAN

BE FOUND IN OUR INTERACTIVE E-BOOKS:

• ANIMATED ELEMENTS

• TEXT-HIGHLIGHTING

• EDUCATIONAL GAMES

• NARRATION

• AWARDS

3

BOOKR CLASS FACILITATES LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

AND THE IMPROVEMENT OF:

• vocabulary due to the wide variety of topics in authentic texts

• grammar with the help of nursery rhymes, narratives, conversations,

etc.

• written language production skills through incidental learning and

focused activities

• oral language production skills with the help of songs, nursery

rhymes, motivating examples and encouraging games

• written language comprehension skills with follow-up activities

• oral language comprehension skills thanks to native narrators and

listening activities

• communication skills through comics, situations and motivational

content

To monitor students, an in-built tracking system is included which

enables the teacher to see what their learners have been or are up to.

It provides information on the amount of time learners spend reading

a book and doing activities and how they cope with games that are in

progress, correct or not. Moreover, the teacher is able to recommend

books to learners which appear on their “recommended books” shelf

in the application.

4

LEVELS OF THE LIBRARY

The online library is divided into

six proficiency levels which are

adapted to specific age groups.

Therefore, each category is

based on the interests and

preferences of the given

age group as well as their

needs as language learners.

The linguistic needs were

established based on the

linguistic proficiency levels

of the Common European

Framework of Reference

(CEFR), but other aspects

and experiences were also

taken into account.

With regard to the selection and composition of texts, besides

considering the proficiency level of each target group, special

attention was paid to create a wide variety of books covering

many aspects for each level. Different topics and different

genres are included to present the diversity of the English

language. This enables us to provide the relevant context of

vocabulary topics, chunks, different registers and various

grammar structures to develop skills in authentic settings as

well as teach about culture, civilisation and subject matters.

5

THE LEVELS AND THE AGE RANGE

OF THE TARGET GROUP:

• LEVEL 1 - AGES 3-5

• LEVEL 2 - AGES 6-9

• LEVEL 3 - AGES 10-12

• LEVEL 4 - AGES 13-14

• LEVEL 5 - AGES 15-16

• LEVEL 6 - AGES 17-18

The books for Levels 1, 2 and 3 are for children who are

BEGINNER language learners and whose basic vocabulary,

grammar and skills need to be established and developed. Books

for Level 1 consist of very basic items and structures in chunks as

well as short and simple sentences while Level 3 presents short

coherent texts with logical links and reading comprehension

development.

Level 4 is the ELEMENTARY level where a wide variety of books

can be found with more language-focused games which require

more conscious use of competences and skills from the language

user.

Level 5 is for INDEPENDENT LANGUAGE USERS who already

possess a basic knowledge of English and are eager to improve

their vocabulary, grammar and skills. On this level a great

emphasis is put on the everyday use of English and on topics

which are related to culture, travel and mobility.

Level 6 is for INTERMEDIATE users of English who are capable of

understanding original texts and their message, implicit content,

humour or even sarcasm. This level focuses mainly on the

civilisation and culture of English-speaking countries, especially

the UK and USA.

6

GAMES

Each book includes games at the end of the story which are

suitable for the relevant age range and fun with a playful

layout that encourages feedback to motivate learners. The

games include new vocabulary, grammar practice, reading

comprehension, spelling as well as listening tasks, and

brainteasers, e.g. memory games, labelling, sudoku and

even colouring activities for young children.

FLASHCARDS

For further practice, flashcard sets serve the purpose of more

focused vocabulary development. Many of the words and

expressions from the sets are used in the books of the given

level in meaningful contexts which enables incidental learning.

However, the thematic collection of the most useful and frequent

words and expressions of each level offers a chance for learners

to memorise and revise language items.

The cards consist of the words themselves, explanatory illustrations,

the pronounced words and on higher levels, definitions as well.

The variety of inputs facilitates the memorisation of vocabulary

for learners with different learning styles.

The flashcard sets might be used as warm-up or wrap-up

activities to challenge learners or to simply revise from or

memorise vocabulary. As all the sets of flashcards have the

same structure, even young learners can use them on their own.

ILLUSTRATION

BOOKR is aware that vision is our most important sense,

particularly in one’s childhood, and that the skill of “reading”

pictures develops from the very beginning of our lives.

Understanding images and connecting them to words that we

hear helps the development of oral-comprehension as well as

language-production skills.

7

Therefore, to facilitate the development of our readers, the

provision of high-quality inputs is one of our major concerns.

A good illustration not only establishes the atmosphere of a

story and depicts the topic but also makes the characters come

alive, thus laying the foundations for contextual, organic learning.

The movement of some of the images in our interactive books

catches the attention of the reader and develops comprehension

skills without drawing too much attention away from the

linguistic features of the story.

The aim of illustrations at more basic levels is to facilitate

comprehension, e.g. the reader can grasp the context of the story

more easily. At these levels, illustrations are designed according to

a concept-based approach. The characters have distinctive features

which are often symbolic and composed of larger, contrasting

elements. As the skills of the learners develop, the graphics

become richer, more detailed, more complex and sometimes

even metaphoric. On the one hand these features are in line with

the descriptive features of the literature illustrated, but on the

other hand they offer authentic cultural and historical depictions.

Our young and talented illustrators were raised on traditional

illustrations, with their modern approach they are part of

the contemporary graphic world. They are able to attract

the young generation while respecting the well-established

principles of illustrating.

8

LEVEL 1

GETTING FAMILIAR WITH ENGLISH

Books on Level 1 aim to familiarize young children with

the basics of the English language and some of its

characteristic cultural elements.

They were selected based on their topics to engage learners,

on their linguistic content to transmit basic vocabulary and

grammar chunks, and on their length as well as usefulness as

supplementary materials.

GAMES

The games of Level 1 were designed for young learners between

the ages of 3 and 5, thus, the concept of these activities is to

encourage them to play in English and provide a context where

they can acquire basic elements of the language.

Many of the books include “picture book-like” pages to help the

identification of words, labelling and matching, simple listening

activities to develop word recognition, and brain teasers for

cognitive development such as the recognition and creation of

patterns, puzzles and picture comparison tasks. These games

inevitably develop fine motor skills as children need to use their

fingers to tap on or draw items on the screen.

As the content of Level 1 was designed for those aged 3 to 5, not

only the books but the related games (instruction, feedback) are

also read out loud by native speakers of English. Furthermore,

jingles and sounds contribute to a better understanding and a

more enjoyable experience.

9

AGES: 3-5

LEVEL 1: Beginner

Research has shown that young learners can absorb words and

sentences more effectively if they get to sing them. That is why

songs are available in the karaoke version as well, in order to

engage learners with further practice.

grammar: the presentation of useful chunks

vocabulary: words related to the everyday life of young readers

28

LEVEL 2

LET’S GET THE JOURNEY STARTED!

The target group of Level 2 is learners between the ages of 6

and 9 who are already familiar with the English language, have

a basic vocabulary and are able to use very simple sentences.

Therefore, the aim of Level 2 is to widen their knowledge

and improve their skills in a variety of ways while songs and

rhymes are still the core of the material.

Level 2 focuses on the vocabulary of the immediate

environment of children (clothes, weather, body parts) and

simple grammatical structures to describe the characteristics

and actions of everyday life. The classic tales, situational minidialogues

and poems have been edited and adjusted to suit

the needs of young learners to ensure comprehension and

language development.

GAMES

Games on Level 2 aim to enlarge the vocabulary of learners

while chunks and useful expressions are still of priority. Many of

these tasks are picture book-like collections of words as well as

expressions and phrases based on everyday situations.

However, besides the memorization of vocabulary, the

activities also encourage learners to produce and create simple

sentences or phrases on their own. This is why several games

were designed to familiarise learners with word sequences,

e.g. adjective-noun expressions, pronoun-verb structures and

preposition-noun phrases.

LEVEL 3

JOIN THE LITERATURE-ADVENTURE!

Level 3 provides the well-known quality of BOOKR Class books

for learners between the ages of 10 and 12: a variety of genres,

accurate illustrations and fun activities but a transition also

occurs. There is a shift from simpler, shorter storylines to more

complicated and extended texts using the unique linguistic

features of storytelling.

The topics and style of the texts were produced in a way that

is suitable for the age group who is entering adolescence.

This more complex and greater input enables the learners to

further develop their comprehension skills but also demands

a greater level of concentration and more consciousness in the

activities at the end of the books.

GAMES

Level 3 focuses on the gradual transition from acquisition and

memorization to conscious learning as well as the combination

of language items and structures.

Therefore, besides the familiar types of games, explicit grammarbased

activities are included and the manipulation of words is

practised, e.g. in multiple-choice or gap-filling activities.

As the texts are longer than on previous levels, there is a greater

emphasis on global comprehension and the understanding of

situations, which, for instance, can be checked with the help of

ordering. The situations of the books also play a significant role

in the development of communicative skills, especially in the

practice of sentences and the choice of reactions to a given input.

LET’S PRACTISE!

AGES: 10-12

The Fox and the Crow

This grouping activity

aims primarily to check

reading comprehension

skills, but also necessitates

the recollection of new

vocabulary items. Besides

understanding the story

as well as its vocabulary

and basic grammatical

structures, logical thinking

also plays a role in

completing the game.

Postcards from Summer

This ordering activity

develops writing skills at

a very basic level with a

focus on text coherence

the mysterious Loch Ness

Monster.

63

LEVEL 3: Beginner

Jacob, the Naughty Koala

This gap-fill activity relies on reading comprehension skills but

also shows how adverbs of frequency are used in sentences in

the present tense. For this focus on grammar, the sentences

include the present simple tense, the verb “to be” and the

modal auxiliary “can” while a scale with the adverbs is also

presented to help recall their meaning.

64

LEVEL 4

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE LANGUAGE!

On Level 4, besides world-famous classical literature, learners

between the ages of 13 and 14 can find fact-based educational

content which is related to the target culture. Some of these

books resemble encyclopaedia entries while others are

dialogues between teenagers, some rhyme while others are

descriptions. The use of different types of texts helps learners

to differentiate between the objectives and styles of various

texts, thus developing indirectly their writing skills.

Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) is emphasised

more on this level because it offers a pleasant combination of

authenticity, information and language input. The topics were

selected to engage teenagers, transmit cultural knowledge and

provide useful information for future international experiences.

The books are great ways to raise consciousness, stimulate

discussion and encourage learners to think critically.

GAMES

Level 4 is designed for basic users of English. The aim of games

on this level is to develop skills, especially comprehension,

encourage production and present different genres

and stylistic variations of the language. Therefore,

besides global comprehension checks, many activities

are included to practise reading for specific information

and games to make sure students understand

stylistically different linguistic items and structures.

65

AGES: 13-14

LEVEL 4: Pre-intermediate

There is also a greater focus on explicit grammar and vocabulary

practice than before to help learners identify and practise

certain structures from the books. Drawing attention to such

elements aims to make their learning process more conscious

and efficient while they can still enjoy the playful layout and

encouraging feedback.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

that the books and games directly or indirectly develop:

grammar: chunks and simple word sequencing

vocabulary: high-frequency words related to the everyday life

of young learners

reading: recognition of word patterns

pronunciation: recognition and production of chunks as well as

simple short sentences

speaking: repetition and use of chunks and basic expressions as

The Tale of Peter Rabbit

This true-or-false activity aims to check reading

comprehension skills by the provision of constant

encouraging feedback on the answers and in the case of

false sentences, the correct information. This justification

develops understanding and the analysis of sentences,

include the vocabulary of the original story.

82

LEVEL 5

GET CONFIDENT IN ENGLISH!

In accordance with the diversity of Level 4, for learners between

the ages of 15 and 16, Level 5 also offers a great variety of topics,

genres and writing styles which provide an excellent context

for the presentation of miscellaneous linguistic elements and

structures.

Besides its challenging linguistic features, which are beyond

the actual environment of learners, the books were designed

to develop linguistic and language-learning skills further,

e.g. one of the main characteristics of books on this level is

their extended length. This not only requires comprehension,

concentration and memory skills but also enables readers to

hypothesize while reading, deduce content or guess the meaning

of new expressions from the linguistic context. Even though

the opportunity for these cognitive processes is not exclusively

typical of Level 5, on this level, learners need to rely more on the

text and less on illustrations, thus stimulating their development.

GAMES

The game sections in the books of Level 5 provide

exercises that help learners engage with the thematic

and linguistic content of the books. Besides the classic

comprehension check exercises, there is a great focus

on vocabulary-building activities often in the form of

matching, gap-filling and grouping including separate

vocabulary items as well as expressions, collocations

and useful phrases. Certain grammatical structures,

e.g. verb tenses and modal verbs, are also highlighted

and extracted as games for focused practice.

83

AGES: 15-16

LEVEL 5: Low Intermediate

Suggestions of writing and speaking activities also appear to

encourage learners to express themselves, their experiences and

opinions, thus activating the structures and vocabulary they are

already able to recognize and understand. Therefore, besides

extensive input, extended output gains importance.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

that the books and games directly or indirectly develop:

grammar: understanding and producing sentences with various

structures using different verb tenses

vocabulary: related to specific fields of interest as well as

nuanced and idiomatic expressions

reading: texts with complex sentences about everyday life and culture

writing: the presentation of different types of texts and writing styles

speaking: production of texts, the expression of personal

opinion and participation in conversation

listening: understanding texts globally as well as in detail

tricksters but also by his own ministers and

people for fear of being simple-minded. The

story teaches about fashion, conceit, a lack of

critical thinking, honesty and values in general.

FOCUS OF THE GAMES

• reading comprehension with true

or false questions

• vocabulary building with definitions

• gap-filling exercise of the summary

IN THE CLASSROOM:

IInitiate a discussion in your class about

honesty and white lies. Let your students

collect the advantages and disadvantages of

being honest using the relevant vocabulary.

Elicit personal accounts

and experiences.

How Rabbit Killed the Giant

This matching vocabulary

building activity includes the

new vocabulary items and their

simple definitions. Besides

enlarging one’s vocabulary,

the usefulness of definitions

and how to create them is

demonstrated with the help of

synonyms, adjectives, collective

nouns and defining clauses.

Love Me Do

Another activity to enrich vocabulary

is this grouping activity which doesn’t

solely rely on the exact meaning of the

adjectives but also on the attributed

quality suggested by the text from

the book. This activity, therefore,

necessitates reading comprehension

skills and the understanding and

analysis of the context in which the

adjective appeared.

LEVEL 6

DISCOVER THE WONDERS

OF ENGLISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES!

Unlike previous levels in the BOOKR Kids library, Level 6 has

adopted a different concept concerning its structure and

content. While the bookshelves of levels 1-5 consist of stories

grouped into categories based on their content and genre, this

level is a comprehensive collection of various cultural aspects

of English-speaking countries. This consistency is exceptional

in the BOOKR Kids library and serves the purpose of getting

familiar with the target culture and civilization, especially

that of the UK and USA. Its dialogic presentation enables the

acquisition of specific vocabulary, but also the comparison of

cultures, parallels to be drawn and the vision of learners to be

widened in general.

Along with these cultural overviews, some classics also appear

on this level to provide authentic, original texts from the finest

of literature.

GAMES

The focus of the games of Level 6 shifts from classical ESL

activities to quizzes on the content of the books, thus

promoting the acquisition of factual knowledge while

using the language as a means to succeed. This content

and language integrated learning (CLIL) aspect helps

learners get used to the English-speaking educational

context and prepare them to learn about or in Englishspeaking

countries.

99

AGES: 17-18

LEVEL 6: Intermediate

LANGUAGE SKILLS

The aim of Level 6 is to further develop the skills previously

acquired with the help of specific vocabulary and more

complicated grammatical structures. Besides the comprehension

of educational dialogues, learners have the opportunity to gain

authentic experience of classical literature.

The books on this level are designed to improve cognitive skills such

as analysis, comparison and reasoning which play an important

role in further studies as well as everyday problem-solving.
