Speaking at a press in Lagos to announce details of the event, Chief Client Engagement Officer of Sterling Bank, Mr. Moronfolu Fasinro, said that the bank is partnering with Icreate Africa because it is committed to solving the unemployment challenge on the African continent. We will operate a mix fleet of Airbus A330, Airbus A321, Embraer E190, Gulfstream G650, and Boeing 737F freighters. As highlighted earlier, there is a serious lack of access to funding and equipment and an environment that is not so friendly to airline operators, but things seem to be improving and we are optimistic the Nigerian aviation industry will get there eventually.
2019 Lagos Women Run: Celebration of healthy living and tourism •Cheptoeck-Careen, winner of the 2019 Lagos Women Run By Jacob Ajom The 2019 Lagos Women Run held Saturday, November 9 scored many firsts and to say the least a huge success. The 10km race saw a huge leap in participants, from about 17,000 that took part the previous year to over 35,000 this year. Prominent among the participants was the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, who flagged off the race from the National Museum, Onikan; the first flag off by a First Lady. And for the very first time, in its four year history, the 2019 Lagos Women Run race opened its doors to participants from outside of Nigeria. The race was eventually won by a Kenyan athlete, Cheptoek Careen, who returned a time of 28 mins 55 secs. She was followed by Deborah Pam and Elizabeth Nuhu Power both from Plateau State, Nigeria. Careen, the champion got N750,000 for her effort while the first and second runners up got N500,000 and N300,000 respectively. There were also prizes in the veterans category. Beyond the monetary gains, the biggest benefit to all the participants was their involvement in a new movement which places importance on healthy living through sport. Initiator of the annual race, a former athlete(Martial Aets), Tayo Popoola said the motive was to engender mass participation of women in sports. “This is aimed at building a helathy society and the benefits are enormous both to the individual and the entire society.” With emphasis on healthy living, organisers arranged for free special medical checks for willing participants. Most of them underwent check ups on breast cancer and their HIV status/ Perhaps, one of the sectors that gained quiet tremendously from the 2019 Lagos Women Run was the tourism sector. The race was deliberately routed through iconic places of interest in Lagos. From the starting point, which was the National Meseum, through the Muson Centre, Race Course, Apangbo, the National Theatre, Costain, the National Stafium and terminated at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere. “The race was excellent,” said the champion, Cheptoek Careen, after the event. She told Sports Vanguard that she was impressed by the level of organisation but was quick to attribute her “easy” victory to the absence of other Kenyans or east Africans gnerally. “I actually believe the absence of my fellow east Africans made the victory more assured for me and I enjoued the course,” she said, adding jovially, “the Abeokuta race was tougher and I don’t think this(Lagos Race) was up to 10kms.” The Kenyan who finished second at the maiden JAC Motors Abeokuta Road Race told our Abeokuta Golf Club honours Alake, take to the course The 14th Coronation Anniversary Golf Tournament takes place today at the Abeokuta Golf Club, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta has reached an advanced stage. The competition which is promoted by the club and sponsored by the Oil Giants, Oando Plc, is featuring no fewer than one hundred amateur golfers from different golf clubs within the South-West zone, and other parts of the country. Captain of the club, Adewale Adeogun revealed that the tournament was organised to commemorate the fourteenth anniversary of the coronation of His Royal Majesty Oba Adedotun Gbadebo Okukenu IV CFR, Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland. Furthermore, the captain disclosed that the golf course is in good shape, adding that this edition would be better organised than the previous editions. “We have received enormous support from Oando, being the main sponsor of the tournament, and it is anticipated that to whom much is given, much is expected. “Over a hundred golfers across Nigeria are taking part,” he said, adding that the tournament was to honour and celebrate Kabiyesi, on the 14th coronation anniversary of his ascending the throne.” He stated: “It is an amateur tournament comprising of men’s and ladies categories, veteran and super veteran in both categories. •Tayo Popoola reporter that after the Abeokuta race, she went to Jos, Plateau State and trained for four days for the Lagos race. “Jos is a very good place to train for long distance races. It is a place with the right weather condition and the topography there is right for the sport. She advised any Nigerian who want to make it in long distance race to establish a camp in Jos for the special training. Careen said Lagos was beautiful, “but very hot. I also enjoyed the food but the only problem I had was too much peper.” One of the highpoints of the 2019 Lagos Women Day Run was the participation of the Oluwaseyi sisters. Bimpe(10) and Damilola(8) went the entire course and breasted the tape before most adults who ran alongside them. With their father, Abioye Oluwaseyi behind them, the two kids stunned other participamts, “They showed determination and a high level of endurance that was far beyond their ages,” one of the runners said, while appraising their performance. But their father, Abioye said he was not surprised because the girls started running as soon as they knew how to walk. “I am an athlete. It happens that each time I left home to train, they cry until I come back. They always want to train with me, so I decided they go out with me for training each time I have a session.” The elder of the two sisters, Bimpe said she was excited finishing the race. “I wanted to finish first but I failed.
