KEEP OUR LAKES CLEAN! Please help us keep our community beautiful
by NOT THROWING trash and debris into the lakes. In addition, there is
NO SWIMMING, BOATING OR FISHING in the LAKES.
PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS AND GEESE: Spring is the air and this
lovely weather has many of us visiting our community parks and ponds. It
can be tempting to feed the ducks as geese as many of us have grown up
thinking that this was an environmentally responsible and humane way to
dispose of old or stale bread. However, feeding ducks and geese is actually
unhealthy and potentially dangerous for the birds. This seemingly generous
act, in fact, can be extremely harmful. Bread and similar products such as
crackers, chips, doughnuts and popcorn have little nutritional value. Without
healthy food and proper nutrition the ducks and geese will quickly succumb
to disease and death. Feeding ducks and geese can lead to the following
problems as well:
• Duckling malnutrition - in areas where ducks are regularly fed bread
the ducklings will not receive adequate nutrition for proper growth and
development.
• Overcrowding - Where food is easy to come by, ducks and other waterfowl
will lay more eggs and the pond or lake will become overcrowded. This
makes it more difficult for the birds to seek out healthier food sources
and increases territorial aggression, especially during mating season. It
will also cause ducks to cross busy streets in search of food.
• Pollution - What happens to all that bread that is not eaten? It causes
algae growths, pollution and can eventually eradicate fish and other life
in the vicinity.
• Diseases - A diet rich in carbohydrates leads to greater fecal production
and bird feces easily harbors bacteria responsible for numerous diseases
including avian botulism.
• Attraction of pests - Rotting leftover food attracts other unwelcome
pests such as rats, mice and insects. These pests can also harbor additional
diseases that can be dangerous to humans.
If you care about ducks and geese, do not feed them. They can live
longer, healthier lives by relying on natural food sources such as aquatic
plants, seeds, grasses and insects rather than taking handouts from willmeaning
humans. Now that you know, you can help by not feeding the
ducks and geese and by educating other duck lovers.

GOLF COURSE Safety
Please be aware of the safety hazards involved in trespassing onto
the Sterling Country Club and Houston National cart paths and golf
course. The cart paths on both courses are only for golfers that have
registered through our Pro Shop. Cart paths are a means for players
to complete their round of golf as quickly, conveniently and safely as
possible. As the Stone Gate community continues to grow we feel
it is our responsibility to educate every resident as best we can to
keep pedestrians and their pets safe and away from the cart paths.
Golf balls are often hit at speeds over 150 mph and can have deadly
consequences to a human or pet if hit in the head, throat or chest. Because
the paths are for registered golfers, those playing golf are not aware of the
presence of pedestrians on the course, which can lead to very damaging
collisions with hikers/bikers and their pets. This January I fielded a report
of a pedestrian being struck by a golf ball and other reports of residents
having near miss encounters with golf carts when traveling along the
paths. Hiking, jogging, biking, dog walking, golf cart/ATV’s not being
used to play golf, skateboarding and skating on the cart paths is
strictly prohibited anywhere on the golf course because of safety
hazard and trespassing concerns. Thanks for your cooperation!

& Miramesa. There is no fee to register. You only need to register at one
location not both. You can purchase an access card for $5 each (max of 4

all the amenities on the Stone Gate side.
Gate Access: To register for gate access please bring your driver license,
vehicle registration and EZ tag information to the onsite office. Only
vehicles registered to a home in the community will be entered into the
EZ Tags system for the specific section that your home is located, access
to the other sections is permitted by card access upon request. There
is no charge to use your EZ Tag on the community gates. You can also
obtain a sticker for your vehicle at one of the onsite offices to gain quick
access at the two sections where there is a gate attendant, please use the
visitor lane and the gate attendant will notice your community sticker
and open the gate automatically. You can purchase a vehicle tag for the
EZ lane for $25 (check or money order only) at one of the onsite offices.

Boy Scout Troop 609 is a specialized for Boys with high functioning
Autism Spectrum Disorders. They meet at the Westview School on the 1 st
and 3 rd Saturday of the month from 9:30-11:30 AM.

Troop 838 is a small pack located near Hwy 6 and West Road at the Crossbridges
Church. We are between the Copperfield and Aberdeen neighborhoods. Being
a smaller troop allows us to be flexible and address the needs of our scouts more
nimbly. We currently have boys from ages 11 to 17 within our group working
to make Eagle. We try to camp monthly, with a wide variety of locations on our
agenda. The different locations are chosen by the senior boys to more directly
meet our training needs and to keep expenses low. In fact, we have some of the
lowest expenses in the area. Our adult leaders are all experienced with years
of scouting under their belt per individual. We also work closely with several
local packs of cub scouts and participate in civic duties around the area as well.

TROOP 1865
Troop 1865 runs a diverse program of outdoor and service activities,
with events selected by the scouts themselves. We meet Mondays at 6:30
PM, at the Copperfield HOA building on Willow River and Hwy 6, behind
Labay. We’ve gone backpacking through the National Forest, rappelling
off Enchanted Rock, Survival camping, boating, canoeing and anything
else the scouts can dream up. We do high-adventure camping at
Philmont and Seabase. Our advancement program has enabled scout to
achieve the coveted rank of Eagle Scout at 10 times the national average
rate. We see scouting as a practice run on adult life. Scouts learn about
leadership and teamwork through having to work together in the field.
We learn about responsibility through fund-raising activities that have
allowed the entire troop to pay for their own summer camp each year.

We are an active year round pack for Kindergarten-5 th grade that focuses on

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop

SET FOR DECEMBER 3RD
The CFISD guidance and counseling and psychological services
departments are sponsoring the Community Mental Health Resource
Fair, to be held on December 3 rd , 3:30-6 PM at the Berry Center (8877
Barker Cypress Road). District parents, staff and community members
will have the opportunity to meet the CFISD Mental Health Intervention
Team and community mental health care providers, as well as learn of
available resources and opportunities.
More than 70 mental health providers and vendors are scheduled to
attend the fair, including a massage therapist to help promote self-care.
Numerous door prizes will be available for fair patrons to win, while
vendors and events booths will have gifts and other giveaways.
“This is an awesome opportunity for our entire community to view many
of our mental health providers under one roof,” said Franklin Sampson,
director of guidance and counseling. “It’s very rare to have an event solely
focused on providing individual information from multiple therapists and
facilities. We are taking the guess work out of it. We are giving everyone
the privilege of meeting with mental health providers. The event is totally
free and we encourage all to attend. Let’s continue to tackle the stigma
associated with mental health concerns.”
CFISD RECEIVES BRONZE AWARD FROM CENTER
FOR SCHOOL BEHAVIORAL HEALTH
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, through the department of psychological services
and the guidance and counseling department, received a Bronze
recognition award at the Center for School Behavioral Health’s annual
conference on September 27 th .
The Center for School Behavioral Health is a program started by Mental
Health America of Greater Houston. The program allows school districts
across the greater Houston area to come together and collaborate on
ideas and best practices through the Center Collaborative and Learning
Community subprograms. CFISD’s department of psychological services
and the guidance and counseling department have both been members
of the Center Collaborative and Learning Community for more than
seven years.
The following requirements must be met by a school district to receive a
Bronze recognition award:
• District is a Center Collaborative member for at least one full academic
year.
• District is implementing five to 10 center recommendations.
• At least one district representative attends 60 percent of the Center
Collaborative meetings.
• At least one district representative attends 40 percent of the Learning
Community meetings.

• At least one district representative has attended an additional center
organized event or learning opportunity.
• At least one district staff member attends the annual center conference.
• More than 50 percent of the district staff has received training on signs
and symptoms of mental health challenges and suicide prevention.
CFISD EARNS SCHOOLS FIRST TOP RATING
FOR 17TH STRAIGHT YEAR
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD received a rating of Superior by the Texas Education
Agency (TEA)’s School FIRST (Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas)
program, announced in early August - marking the 17 th consecutive top
rating for CFISD.
The rating system measures the quality of a district’s financial management
and reporting system based on 15 indicators. A negative response to any
of the first few criteria could have resulted in an automatic “Substandard”
rating. CFISD received the highest rating on 14 of 15 indicators. While a
score of 60 indicates a passing mark, CFISD attained a score of 94. The
highest possible score is 100.
School FIRST was developed by the TEA in response to Senate Bill 218,
which was passed by the 77 th Legislature in 2001. The primary objective
of School FIRST is to achieve quality performance in the management of
school districts’ financial resources - a goal made more significant due to the
complexity of accounting associated with the Texas school financial system.
The School FIRST accountability rating system assigns financial ratings
to Texas school districts, with the highest being Superior, followed by
Above-Standard, Meets-Standard and Substandard Achievement.
SIXTH ANNUAL CFISD HEALTH EXPO
DRAWS 1,300-PLUS GUESTS
More than 1,300 patrons visited the sixth annual CFISD Health Expo,
benefitting the Health Organization of Physical Educators (H.O.P.E.), on
October 12 th at the Berry Center.
The event featured on-site health screenings and massages and included
health demonstrations such as the blender bike attraction provided by
CFISD’s nutrition services department. The event featured a total of seven
student performances.
Students and parents participated in a health walk on the concourse
facilitated by elementary PE teachers to encourage movement. The expo
benefits H.O.P.E., which raises scholarships to support physical education
and promote lifelong physical fitness.
“We’re so thankful to have everyone come out,” said Tania Gaubert, CFISD
health services coordinator. “It’s been overwhelming to see the amount of
sponsors that have come out and set up their booths for the community
to see. It’s been a great success.”

CYPRESS SPRINGS RUNNER FEATURED
ON FOX 26 ‘MAKING THE GRADE’
Cypress Springs High School cross country runner Pablo Martinez was
featured November 4 th during the Fox 26 “Making the Grade” segment,
which showcased the junior for his excellence both in athletics and
academically.
Fox 26 reporter Nate Griffin visited Cypress Springs on October 29 th
to interview Martinez and record the segment, which also included
appearances from Martinez’s family and coaches, the Cypress Springs
Panteras, cheerleaders, drumline and administration.
“It feels great to know that the hard work pays off,” Martinez said. “You
put so much effort and so much dedication into the sport, something
that you really love. Anything you put your heart into is going to be
successful.”
Martinez is ranked second in his class. He is a dual-sport athlete (cross
country and soccer) and has competed in cross country since seventh
grade. During the season, Martinez dropped his time more than two and
half minutes. He placed ninth at the District 14-6A meet on October 18 th ,
advancing to the Region II-6A Cross Country Championships where he
was a top-50 finisher.
Martinez credits being strong mentally for his success in athletics,
especially in cross country. “There’s a lot of mental and physical battles
with yourself,” he said. “You’re stronger than what you think you are and
I think that’s very true. Sometimes your mind just wants to give up, your
legs are tired and you just want to stop. That’s when your mental strength
comes into play and you have to really go hard.”

CYPRESS SPRINGS HS HOSTS CTE FAIR FOR
INCOMING STUDENTS
Cypress Springs High School welcomed future Panthers to the third annual
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Fair on October 26 th . Students met
Cypress Springs CTE teachers, Lone Star College representatives and local
business leaders, heard remarks from Cypress Springs principal Dr. Cheryl
Henry, Director of CTE Denise Kubecka and other CTE educators and were
divided into four groups and shown different certification classes offered
at Cypress Springs. Students were escorted to different CTE classes by
the school’s Air Force Junior ROTC cadets. Classes included Auto Tech,
Cosmetology, Fashion Design, Culinary, Engineering, Health Science
and Child Development, Animation, Video Production and Agriculture.
Lone Star College and local businesses were available to speak with
students about opportunities after high school. More than 64 industry
certification opportunities are available to students through CTE courses
across CFISD. Training and preparation for the exam are free for most the
certifications. All students need to pay for is the exam fee.

INGREDIENTS:
2 eggs
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup instant oatmeal
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 pinch salt
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease 12 muffin cups.
Whisk eggs, brown sugar, vegetable oil and milk together in a bowl until
smooth. Stir flour, oatmeal, baking powder, baking soda and salt into wet
ingredients to form a batter. Fill the prepared muffin cups with batter.
Bake in preheated oven until tops are golden brown and an inserted
toothpick comes out clean, about 20 minutes.

Eggnog Pie

INGREDIENTS:
1 (.25 ounce) package unflavored gelatin
1/4 cup cold water
1 cup milk
1/2 cup white sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/4 cup rum
1 cup whipping cream
1/4 pinch white sugar
1 (9 inch) pie shell, baked or
graham cracker pie crust
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
DIRECTIONS:
In a small bowl, combine gelatin and cold water; set aside to soften.
Combine milk and 1/2 cup sugar in a small glass bowl. Microwave for 3
minutes or until milk begins to boil.
In a steady stream, pour hot milk into beaten eggs, whisking constantly.
Cook custard in the microwave, whisking after each minute, until it
thickens slightly, about 2 minutes. Stir in softened gelatin and mix until
melted. Stir in rum. Let filling cool to room temperature. (If you refrigerate
it, stir occasionally to prevent gelatin from setting too soon.)
In a medium bowl, whip cream until soft peaks form; beat in 1/4 cup
sugar. Set aside 1/2 cup of whipped cream for garnish; keep refrigerated.
Fold remaining whipped cream into eggnog mixture. Pour filling into
pie crust and refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Garnish with reserved
whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg.
