BITS AND BOOKS...............................FOREGROUND MUSICBY GRAHAM DUFFUnlike their close cousin thenovelist, a memoirist invitesreaders to judge their lives aswell as their writing. Easy tocome a cropper. Just ask JamesFrey.Full disclosure. I’ve kind ofknown Graham Duff eversince I first started comingto Brighton in the late 80s.There were people we bothknew although I never reallygot to hang out with him. Bythe mid-90s he was touring inshows with his mucker JamesPoulter. The A-Z of Drugs and The A-Z of Taboosurfed the wave of festival-going hedonism thatembraced New Lads and Brit Pop, though tobe fair they were never really part of either.They were wilder and more left-field, had theirown thing going on, and I always found theirhumour wacky, edgy, and charming. Duff wenton to write Ideal starring Johnny Vegas and wasa Death Eater in Harry Potter.Now comes Foreground Music, A Life In FifteenGigs. He starts with going to see Cliff Richard inBlackburn in 1974, aged 10. His sister is a madCliff fan, so their Mum takes them. But this isnot showbiz Cliff – this is Christian Cliff, andCliff ain’t doing requests. From this inauspiciousand very droll beginning we move on to Duff’simmersion in gig-going fandom as he coversfirst The Jam and various Two-Tone bands live,then the full panoply of the Northern Tendencyin post-punk music. We get vivid reports of whatit was like to see Joy Division, Psychic TV, TheShamen and Primal Scream. Duff evokes thesebands up close, the energy,the passion, the sheer racket,so that you feel like you’restanding near the stage withhim, can feel the sticky carpet,are as much off your headwith joy and intoxication as hewas himself.But no one stays young foreverand this book that startsout with youth and intensitymodulates over the courseof seeing gigs by a reformedVelvet Underground, DavidBowie, and Wired into apoignant reckoning with ageing and mortality.Duff gets to meet his heroes – the passagesabout Mark E. Smith are terrific – and even playwith them.In the end, we are given a portrait of the artistnot just as fan, or obsessive, but as connoisseur,as scholar. Duff’s knowledge of the bands he’sinto is truly encyclopaedic. And his account ofMassive Attack v Adam Curtis in Manchesteris as important a document as contemporaryaccounts of Stravinky’s Rite of Spring.Music has given much to Duff. In ForegroundMusic he repays the debt. And so in the end thisis, I think, what he asks us to judge him on. Washe right? You must decide for yourselves. Butevery music fan worth their headphones willwant Foreground Music under their Christmastree. As much to disagree with as to take delightin. Me?
